In February 1999 a woman and two teenagers disappeared while on a sightseeing trip at the majestic Yosemite Park. A massive search ended four weeks later when their burned out car was discovered by a hiker. Police tracked down several suspects and put them behind bars on unrelated charges, assuring the public that the people responsible for the brutal murders were in jail. Then in July 1999 a fourth woman was murdered near the park. On this episode of History of the 90s we look back at the case of the Yosemite Park Killer. The long awaited not so part two of 162 is finally here- so let's get crimey... unfortunately.. Today, Taylar brings us a "two for one" type of case with the Yosemite Murders of 1999 and the 1972 Abduction of 7 year old Steven Stayner from Merced, California. No one would have thought that the abduction of a 7 year old boy would be connected in anyway with the brutal murders of: Carol Sund, Julie Sund, Silvina Pelosso, and Joie Armstrong, however- they were. Now that we all see exactly why Taylar and Morgan decided it would be best to split that episode in half, you're so welcome. In 1999, Carole Sund took her daughter Juli (15) and close family friend Silvina Pelosso (16), who was visiting from Argentina, on a trip to Yosemite National Park. When the trio disappeared, it set off a huge search and initially it was feared their car slid off the road. The cold snowy weather meant fewer tourists, but it also meant increased danger. Not from the hibernating animals… it was a much more dangerous predator.

This case has so many twists and turns and really is several stories that merge into one. There is so much to this story so I decided the best way to tell the story was to turn it into two episodes. In order to tell the story we have to start at the beginning so this is Steven's story. -- Brytn smile's at home teeth whitening kit provides you with results in as little as one treatment. In 1972, on his way home from school, 7 year old Steven Stayner was kidnapped. He was kept as a "son" to child sex offender Kenneth Parnell. Steven eventually escaped in in 1980 when Parnell had kidnapped another young boy. After Steven's kidnapping and return, the Stayner family thought that was the end to their suffering but boy were they wrong. Not only does a ton happen to Steven after his return home but in 1999, Cary, the older brother, was arrested in suspicion of the role he played in the Yosemite Murders- the murder of 4 women in 1999 in Yosemite National Park. What is the coincidence that one family can have so much happen to them with such eerie circumstances. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In episode #42, Barry-John speaks with former FBI agent and child abduction specialist Jeffrey Rinek about his illustrious career in law enforcement. Jeffrey talks about the rewarding parts of the job but also how the job takes an emotional toll on its agents, so much so that Jeffrey actually has attempted suicide twice.Jeffrey also speaks about obtaining the confession from the Yosemite Serial Killer, Cary Steynar.I would highly recommend reading Jeffrey's book 'In The Name Of The Children: An FBI Agent's Relentless Pursuit of the Nation's Worst Predators'.The book can be purchased here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Name-Children-Relentless-Pursuit-Predators/dp/1944648984Learn more about Jeffrey here: https://fbiretired.com/agent/rinek-jeffrey/Follow Barry-John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/talkofshamepod/
