The average reader need not go far in a bookstore before, knowingly or not, they encounter authors who started their careers by self-publishing prior to achieving commercial success. Examples include Margaret Atwood, Andy Weir, Colleen Hoover, Anna Todd, E. L. James, Scarlett St. Clair, and many more. Such stories of self-made writers are compelling and seem more attainable to others with the accessibility of modern publishing platforms such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Kobo, Wattpad, Webtoon, Radish, Inkitt, Qidian, Tapas, and Swoon Reads. However, in Inequalities of Platform Publishing: The Promise and Peril of Self-Publishing in the Digital Book Era (U Massachusetts Press, 2025) Claire Parnell uncovers in her examination of the two most popular—Amazon and Wattpad—these services in fact perpetuate systemic racial, gender, and sexual bias against authors of color and queer authors through their technological, economic, social, and cultural structures. At a time when there is a real reckoning with the discrimination that has resulted in publishing opportunities for only relatively few privileged authors—who are often White, upper class, and male—self-publishing presents itself as an equalizer of sorts. Exploring that idea, Parnell shows that these platforms are not just intermediaries for information; they structure content and users in multiple, often inequitable, ways through their ability to set market conditions and apply algorithmic sorting. Combining original interviews, walkthrough method, metadata analysis, and more, Parnell finds that self-publishing platforms reproduce challenges for authors from marginalized communities. Far from equalizing the market, the new platforms instead frequently perpetuate the stubborn barriers to mainstream success for BIPOC and queer authors. Learn more about your ad choices. It's taken 46 years and we've still managed to stuff up the decision as to where to have a memorial for the 257 people who died in the Mt Erebus air disaster. It was 46 years ago today when the Air NZ DC-10, flight TE901, ploughed into the side of Mt Erebus. And, yes, nice job making the memorial announcement in time for the anniversary, but Cracroft Reserve in Christchurch is not where it should be. In fact, it shouldn't be in Christchurch full-stop. It should be in Auckland. I'm not the only one who thinks so. I'll get to that. But I will never forget the night of the Erebus crash – if you were around at the time, you probably won't either. I was 11-and-a-half, and I remember being allowed to stay up late and listen to the 10 o'clock news on the radio. I went off to bed afterwards knowing it wasn't good. And it seemed that everyone knew someone who was either on that plane or knew someone who lost someone close to them on that plane. A mate of dad's lost his wife. Simone Bennett was one of those people affected directly. She lost her father. He was one of the 257 people on board who died – 237 passengers and 20 crew. She is furious that the memorial is going to be built in Christchurch. She says she's furious and disgusted because she lives in Auckland and she can't believe the memorial is going to be so far away. I get that and good on her for calling out the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, because it feels to me like they have just given up on Auckland and gone for the next best location. You'll probably remember the stoush when they wanted to build the memorial at Dove Meyer Robinson Park in Parnell, in Auckland. But there was major push-back on that one. The anti-brigade claimed that it would “change the tone of the gardens”. They eventually got their way when the cyclone went through Auckland and made the site at the gardens in Parnell unsafe to build on. After that, 50 different sites in the greater Auckland area were looked at but none were considered suitable. Hence, it ending up in Christchurch. Not everyone is unhappy with the decision though. Andrew McKeen is president of the Airline Pilots' Association. He's not only thrilled it's finally going to happen, he also thinks Christchurch is a good spot for it. He's saying: “Christchurch serves as New Zealand's gateway to Antarctica and was the intended stopover point for TE901's return to Auckland." Which it was. I remember someone telling me once about all the airport staff waiting for the plane to land in Christchurch 46 years ago tonight. I get the connection to Antarctica with the Antarctic programme being based in Christchurch. But the Air New Zealand headquarters is in Auckland and that's where the memorial should be. The majority of family members live there too. And I'm conscious that there could be someone reading this right now who was affected by Erebus in the most direct way and who may very well think Christchurch is a good choice. But I don't. Simone Bennett, who I mentioned earlier, doesn't either. But what about you? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ghlac na mílte páirt inniu i mór-agóid náisiunta ar son na Gaeilge agus na Gaeltachta. The protest was called RIGHTS, and people came from all over the country to attend. CEARTA ab ainm don agóid, agus tháinig daoine ó gach cearn den tír le freastal uirthi. The crowds marched from Parnell Square to Leinster House. Mhairseáil na sluaite ó Chearnóg Parnell go dtí Teach Laighean. Irish and Gaeltacht groups participated, along with schools, third level students, co-operative teachers, musicians and families. Bhí grúpaí Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta páirteach ann, mar aon le scoileanna, mic léinn triú leibhéil, múinteoirí comharchumainn, ceoltóirí agus teaghlaigh. CEARTA was the first such national protest on behalf of the Irish language and the Gaeltacht in over a decade. Bhí CEARTA ar an gcéad agóid náisiúnta dá leithéid ar son na Gaeilge agus na Gaeltachta le breis agus deich mbliana anuas. Among their demands, they are seeking fair funding, the right to live in the Gaeltacht, reform of the education system, and the fulfillment of long-promised language rights, Conradh na Gaeilge said today. I measc na n- éileamh atá acu, tá siad ag lorg maoiniú cothrom, an ceart chun cónaí sa Ghaeltacht, athchóiriú ar an gcóras oideachais, agus comhlíonadh cearta teanga a gealladh le fada, a dúirt Conradh na Gaeilge inniu. In a statement issued by the Department of Rural, Community and Gaeltacht Development today, Minister Dara Calleary said that he is currently focusing on securing more funding for the language and the Gaeltacht in Budget 2026. I ráiteas a chuir an Roinn Forbartha Tuaithe 's Pobail agus Gaeltachta ar fáil inniu, dúirt an tAire Dara Calleary go bhfuil sé ag díriú faoi láthair ar níos mó maoinithe a fháil don teanga agus don Ghaeltacht i mBuiséad 2026. He also indicated that investment in the language has increased over the past five years. Thug sé le fios freisin go bhfuil ardú tagtha ar infheistíocht sa teanga le cúig bliana anuas. "It's true that we have more funding now." "Tá sé fíor go bhfuil nios mó maoinithe againn anois. "But that is true for every sector," said Julian de Spáinn, Secretary General of Conradh na Gaeilge at the protest today. Ach tá an méid sin fíor i gcás gach earnála" a dúirt Julian de Spáinn, Ard-Rúnaí Chonradh na Gaeilge ag an agóid inniu. "It's easy to have 'more' when the starting point is so low at first." "Tá sé furasta ‘níos mó' a bheith agat nuair atá an túsphointe chomh híseal ar dtús. The government spends only 0.1% of state expenditure on Irish and Gaeltacht matters. Ní chaitheann an rialtas ach 0.1 faoin gcéad de chaiteachas an stáit ar chúrsaí Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta. "That is scandalous and there is no other option now than to radically increase funding." Tá sé sin scanallach agus agus níl aon rogha eile anois seachas ardú radacach a dhéanamh ar an maoiniú." The protest also focused on language rights in the north. Díríodh freisin le linn na hagóide ar chearta teanga ó thuaidh. An Dream Dearg is a pressure group for the language in Northern Ireland. Is brúghrúpa ar son na teanga i dTuaisceart Éireann é An Dream Dearg. A spokesman for that group, Ciarán Mac Giolla Bhéin - who is also the current President of Conradh na Gaeilge - said that despite the Identity and Language Act being in force in the north for the past few years, the rights promised therein have been slow to come, with the DUP constantly obstructing any progress in that area, he said. Dúirt urlabhraí de chuid an ghrúpa sin, Ciarán Mac Giolla Bhéin - atá ina Uachtarán ar Chonradh na Gaeilge faoi láthair f...

Listen for an immersion in Sally's creative process, developing an image and its home in a narrative. Gabriel was previously the topic of Sally's conversation with the producer in the last episode. For today's episode of Book Talk, it's a treat to welcome Kristen Hogrefe Parnell back. Kristen writes page-turning romantic suspense, and her novella in Truth started with a what-if when she was on vacation at Rosemary Beach. She kept adding layers until she had the plot for the book.Like many authors, Kristen has always wanted to write. If she could go back in time, she'd ask herself what if it could be wonderful? as a way to break out of the fear of what might happen. I love that idea! It's such a great way to reframe a business that is largely out of our control as writers.Connect with Kristen Hogrefe ParnellFacebook | Instagram

For today's episode in Politics on Trial it's two trials for the price of one, which between them changed the course of British and Irish history. In 1889 the leading Irish politician Charles Parnell was cleared of any involvement in the notorious Phoenix Park murders by Irish republican terrorists seven years earlier. In 1890 Parnell was found to be the adulterer in a divorce case involving his mistress and her husband. That scandal destroyed him, permanently split the campaign for Irish self-government and upended Liberal politics in Britain. How did Parnell come to have such a hold on British and Irish politics? Why could he survive accusations of terrorism but not of adultery? And what does his fate reveal about the high-wire politics of a highly decorous and extremely dangerous age? Planning for the FutureIt was Charles Stewart Parnell who said: “No man has the right to say to his country. Thus far shalt thou go and no further.” This was in the 19th century. He also declared; “Let no one set a boundary to the march of a nation.”Parnell was clearly setting out the right of the people of Ireland to self-determination. Interestingly he chose Cork to make this declaration. That was the 21st January 1885. One of the current Cork TDs and the current Taoiseach Micheál Martin has a contrary view. Our right to self-determination is contained in the Good Friday Agreement so that right has been won. We now need to exercise it. There is an irony that An Taoiseach has set his face against this and that he refuses to plan for the certain day when the Good Friday Agreement referendums will be held.Planning for the FutureIt was Charles Stewart Parnell who said: “No man has the right to say to his country. A price tag of more than $80 for just over 3kg of prime New Zealand lamb is a little too rich, even for a former chef who devoted decades to fine dining. According to Stats NZ in the past year food prices have gone up 4.4% percent. That's the biggest jump since December 2023. Tony Astle ran the legendary Auckland fine dining restaurant Antoines in Parnell for almost 50 years. He spoke to Lisa Owen about how to keep cooking costs down.

Reáchtálfar toghchán an mhéara féin i mí na Samhna agus meastar gur rogha na coitiantachta a bheidh in iarrthóir an Pháirtí Dhaonlathaigh. Bhí tacaíocht leithéidí Bernie Sanders agus Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ag Mamdani, agus é ag gealladh polasaithe níos forásaí ná Cuomo, lena n-áirítear reo cíosanna agus busanna saor in aisce sa chathair. Anuas air sin, tá Cuomo luaite le roinnt líomhaintí faoi chiapadh gnéasach. Má éiríonn le Mamdani i mí na Samhna beidh sé ina chéad Mhéara Moslamach i gCathair Nua-Eabhrac.Tháinig fear slán as foirgneamh a bhí trí thine i lár Bhaile Átha Cliath le linn na seachtaine, buíochas le tiománaí leoraí a pháirceáil a fheithicil faoi fhuinneog an tí ar Rae Granby in aice le Cearnóg Parnell. Chonaic Tomasz Zareba fear amháin ag léim amach as fuinneog thuas staighre agus é féin a ghortú ar an tsráid ach ansin thiomáin sé a leoraí taobh leis an fhoirgneamh le go mbeadh fear eile ábalta teacht anuas go sábháilte. I ndiaidh na heachtra, chuaigh Zareba ar ais ag obair, agus é ag seachadadh earraí go siopaí sa chathair. Send us a textEpisode 014From the groundbreaking Lyricon of the 1970s to today's Roland Aerophone, Tom's distinctive electronic wind sounds have shaped countless recordings across jazz, pop, and film scores for decades. The continuation of our in-depth conversation with this legendary musician reveals fascinating insights about his approach to technology and musicianship. "What would best benefit the music?" Tom asks, explaining that wind controllers have always been just another tool in his arsenal, alongside saxophones and other woodwinds. This pragmatic philosophy has guided his five-decade career, allowing him to bring precisely the right sound to each musical situation.Tom shares colorful stories about watching Michael Brecker perform with the EWI at the Hollywood Bowl, his collaboration with Herb Alpert (who Tom credits with "reintroducing horns back into pop music" in the 1960s), and his ongoing quest to recapture the magic of his original Lyricon sound with modern technology. His description of searching for authentic expression amid endless digital possibilities will resonate with electronic musicians of all stripes. What truly distinguishes Tom's approach is his focus on musical expression rather than technological novelty. As he explains, of the hundreds of available sounds on modern wind controllers, he only cares deeply about the handful that allow him to express himself authentically. This quality-over-quantity philosophy serves as a valuable compass for musicians navigating today's overwhelming array of digital options. The conversation also delves into practical territory, with Tom and hosts Matt and Alistair exchanging tips on customizing Aerophone settings, adjusting key functions, and solving common playability challenges. These technical insights offer immediate value for wind controller players seeking to optimize their instruments.Ready to dive deeper into Tom Scott's world? The life of this week's final Scriblerian, Thomas Parnell, rounds out the picture of the entire Scriblerus club as a fraternity of wildly brilliant men all carrying some great pain or wound. Some of them clearly write out of that wound, while others seem to write in spite of it. Parnell straddles the line, and today's poem is a fine example of his blending of bright energy with a sharp edge. Happy reading.Thomas Parnell (11 September 1679 – 24 October 1718) was an Anglo-Irish poet and clergyman who was a friend of both Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. He was born in Dublin, the eldest son of Thomas Parnell (died 1685) of Maryborough, Queen's County (now Portlaoise, County Laois), a prosperous landowner who had been a loyal supporter of Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War and moved from Congleton, Cheshire to Ireland after the Restoration of Charles II. His mother was Anne Grice of Kilosty, County Tipperary: she also owned property in County Armagh, which she left to Thomas at her death in 1709. His parents married in Dublin in 1674. Thomas was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and collated as Archdeacon of Clogher in 1705. In the last years of the reign of Queen Anne of England he was a popular preacher, but her death put an end to his hope of career advancement. He married Anne (Nancy) Minchin, daughter of Thomas Minchin, who died in 1712, and had three children, two of whom died young. The third child, a girl, is said to have reached a great age. The marriage was a very happy one, and it has been said that Thomas never recovered from Nancy's early death. He spent much of his time in London, where he participated with Pope, Swift and others in the Scriblerus Club, contributing to The Spectator and aiding Pope in his translation of The Iliad. He was also one of the so-called "Graveyard poets": his 'A Night-Piece on Death,' widely considered the first "Graveyard School" poem, was published posthumously in Poems on Several Occasions, collected and edited by Alexander Pope and is thought by some scholars to have been published in December 1721. It is said of his poetry, "it was in keeping with his character, easy and pleasing, enunciating the common places with felicity and grace."-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode.
