On the morning of August 12, 2005, a boater on Lake Huron came across a cabin cruiser drifting alone in the water, struggling against the wind and waves. When the Coast Guard arrived, they found the boat in neutral, with the radio still playing, and no one on board. The boat belonged to attorneys Lana Stempien and Chuck Rutherford, who had set out days earlier on a planned trip to Mackinac Island. There was no sign of them anywhere. Police quickly opened a missing persons investigation, and according to many, what investigators uncovered didn't add up.Then, nearly two weeks later, Lana's body was recovered. Hungry Like The Wolf. In this episode, we read a sermon from 11th-century bishop Wulfstan. The main themes in the Sermon of the Wolf to the English (also often referred to by its Latin title, Sermo Lupi ad Anglos) are corruption and sin. These themes are apparent as Wulfstan chastises the English people for their corruption and warns of God's anger and wrath, which is sure to come: "Understand also well that the Devil has now led this nation astray for very many years." He sees that the devil has played a huge part in influencing the English to sin ("Wulfstan"). Wulfstan also strongly believes that the people need to repent, as God is extremely upset and disappointed by the people's actions on Earth. Despite obvious physical differences and confirmation from others that he wasn't her son, Captain J.J. Jones coerced her into taking him home and, when she persisted with evidence, had her involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward for about a week under "Code 12" to silence her.   The boy soon confessed to being 12-year-old runaway Arthur Hutchins Jr., securing Christine's release and sparking public outrage. Meanwhile, the case linked to the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders: serial killer Gordon Stewart Northcott, aided by his mother and nephew Sanford Clark, abducted, abused, tortured, and murdered young boys on his farm. Evidence and confessions tied Walter to the victims—he was reportedly killed with an axe—though his body was never definitively found. Northcott was hanged in 1930; his mother received life.   Christine sued successfully for false imprisonment (though payment was evaded) and helped inspire a 1931 law requiring due process for psychiatric commitments. Jennifer Gledhill, The Utah woman accused of shooting her husband National Guardsman Matthew Johnson, had a court appearance today. Greg and Holly discuss the case as the body of her husband has still not been found.  Greg shares analysis around the complexities of prosecuting a murder without a body. 

He set off expecting nothing more than a long drive. A journey from Oregon to Florida, planned, ordinary, and uneventful. Somewhere along the way, however, Timothy Braddy disappeared. His truck would later be found parked beside a high school, undamaged and unlocked, as though he had stepped away briefly and never returned. There were no signs of violence, no clear reason for him to stop, and no trace of where he went next. What followed was not clarity, but silence. And with it, a question that still has no answer: how does someone simply vanish in plain sight?
