Baltimore faces a set of deeply interconnected challenges: aging and unsafe housing, high energy costs for families with limited means, and a generation of underemployed youth struggling to access meaningful work. These overlapping issues reveal a systemic gap highlighting an opportunity to rethink how housing, workforce development, clean energy, and economic mobility can be addressed together. We invited Brendan McCluskey, President at Trident Builders, to share how his team is tackling these challenges through a bold and collaborative model. Brendan explains how Trident Builders is transforming vacant homes into energy-efficient housing using modular construction and solar technology while creating training and job pathways for underemployed youth. He also shares how partnerships across business, nonprofits, and community leaders are helping scale solutions. This discussion offers a compelling look at how one company is rethinking the role of business in solving complex social problems and how leaders across sectors can identify opportunities within their own work to build solutions that strengthen communities.Listen for insights on:Supporting small, community-based developers to keep wealth localCollaborating across sectors in addressing systemic community challengesConnecting environmental sustainability with economic mobility Watch this conversation on YouTube!Resources + Links:Brendan McCluskey's LinkedInTrident BuildersThe Bmore Co-Op (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Meet Brendan McCluskey, Trident Builders (02:45) - About Brendan (04:52) - Lessons from Parents (06:15) - Baltimore (07:21) - Revenue vs. Sustainable Systems (09:47) - 10,000 Small Businesses (11:33) - BMore Co-op (15:56) - Parts and Problems (18:26) - Equity (20:29) - Helping the Youth (22:31) - Modular Manufacturer (23:34) - Selecting the Right Partners (24:58) - Using Solar (27:50) - Example Project (29:47) - Advice for Young People (30:30) - Integrating AI (31:11) - Quick Takes (33:06) - Last Word (33:35) - Wrap Up

In this episode of The Business of Coaching, we sit down with Beverley (Bea) McCloskey, a former corporate pharmaceutical professional turned successful coach. Bea shares her powerful journey from the high-stakes world of big pharma to a catastrophic burnout that eventually became the "gift" that launched her business. If you've ever felt like you're spinning 25 plates at once—or keeping 25 browser tabs open in your brain—this conversation is for you.About the Guest:Beverley (Bea) McCloskey is a specialist coach and mentor with a deep-rooted background in the corporate pharmaceutical industry. Having spent much of her career in field-based roles for global giants like AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, and Novo Nordisk, she experienced firsthand the transition from high-performance sales to leadership and dedicated coaching roles.Bea's professional journey took a pivotal turn following a catastrophic burnout and a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome, triggered by a combination of high-pressure work and challenging personal circumstances. After a two-year recovery period, she transformed this lived experience into a successful business.Today, Bea focuses her expertise on helping women in the pharma sector—her "ideal client" who mirrors her own experiences from 15 years ago. She works with high-achievers to help them navigate the pressures of corporate life, avoid burnout, and rediscover joy in their careers by balancing soft and hard power.Key Takeaways:The "Tell-as-Coach" Trap: In many corporate environments, coaching is often mistakenly used interchangeably with "training" or simply telling people how to do their jobs. The Cost of Perfectionism: Bea reflects on how her perfectionism wasn't about excellence, but rather an "away motivation" fueled by a terror of making mistakes. The Reality of Burnout: Burnout isn't just about working too hard; it's a multifactorial collapse of resilience often triggered by a combination of personal and professional challenges. The "Niche" vs. The "Chasm": Having a broad niche like "women in danger of burning out" can feel like a chasm where no one can hear you. Success comes from a "tight focus" on people who share your specific lived experience.Employee vs. Business Owner: Transitioning from an employee mindset to a business owner mindset requires a "different manual". Simply replicating corporate structures (like expensive websites and VAT registration) doesn't equate to having a business if you don't have clients."I thought I had a niche, but it was a chasm and no wonder no one could hear me... My words were just words. They were not targeted." — Beverley McCloskeyHave you enjoyed this episode? In this week's episode of The Learning Curve, co-hosts U-Ark Prof. Albert Cheng and Center for Strong Public Schools' Alisha Searcy speak with with Neal McCluskey and James Shuls, co-editors of Fighting for the Freedom to Learn: Examining the Nation's Centuries-Old School Choice Movement, about the historical roots and modern evolution of educational freedom in America. They discuss the inspiration behind the book and highlight key chapters that trace the development of school choice from the nation's founding to today. Their conversation explores how early American leaders viewed education as essential to republican self-government and how early state constitutions supported pluralistic schooling that included religious and private institutions. McCluskey and Shuls examined the rise of the 19th-century Common School movement, its influence on public education, and the ways it departed from the Founders' more decentralized, locally controlled vision of schooling. They also addressed major historical milestones, including the Roberts v. Boston (1850) and Brown v. Board of Education (1954) legal cases and the struggle for equal educational opportunity for Black Americans. They conclude with reflections on modern school choice debates, critiques of choice programs, and the growing legal and policy momentum behind expanding educational freedom across the United States.
Send a textHeat pressed down on Newton in August 1871 like a hand over a mouth, and by midnight the town was a fuse. We open on a drought-stricken railhead where class divides sharpened nerves, the dance band was sent home, and the room held its breath. Then everything snapped. Hugh Anderson strode into Perry Tuttle's hall and dropped lawman Mike McCluskey with a shot that turned a tense crowd into a battlefield. Amid the chaos, a coughing teenager named James Riley locked the doors, drew twin Colts, and harvested the room with terrifying precision—an unassuming figure who authored one of the bloodiest gunfights on the frontier and then vanished into the Kansas night. From there, the wires caught fire. Editors rebranded Newton as “Blooton,” feeding the East's appetite for frontier horror while reformers seized the carnage to push temperance and law. We dive into how correspondent E.J. Harrington—writing as Allegro—built a legend that sold papers, including the polished lie of the “Great Duel” where McCluskey's brother and Anderson allegedly died together. We set the record straight: Anderson was smuggled South, healed, married, and lived long. The myth endured because it offered symmetry the facts refused to give. The real ending took shape in steel and soil. When rails reached Wichita, the cattle trade moved on. Newton traded saloons for schoolhouses, brothels for church steeples, and six-shooters for threshing machines. Mennonite farmers arrived with turkey red wheat, barbed wire cinched the open range, and a new civic identity took root. Through it all, Riley remained a shadow—possibly consumed by illness, possibly drifting down the line—proof that the West wasn't just won in gun smoke, but manufactured in headlines and remade by commerce and community. If this story reframed how you think about the Wild West—where legend wrestles with ledger—tap follow, share with a history lover, and leave a review telling us which version of the story you believe.Support the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included.
Send a textHeat shimmers above the Santa Fe tracks as Newton, Kansas splits in two: polished mahogany and temperance to the north, canvas alleys and all-night revelry to the south. We guide you through the second act of a borderland drama where the railroad doesn't just deliver cattle and cash—it redraws morals, loyalties, and the limits of law. Perry Tuttle's roaring dancehall, the Gold Room's careful smiles, and a fiddler-reporter named Allegro weave a soundscape where stories pay better than truth and reputation is coin.At the heart of the conflict stand two badges that should have kept the peace and instead crack it open. Mike McCluskey, the unyielding Yankee enforcer, and Billy Bailey, a Texan gambler pinned with borrowed authority, become emblems for bigger wars: North versus South, rail versus range, progress versus pride. When election day whiskey greases ballots for railroad bonds, tempers boil. A public humiliation spills into sunlight, and a gut shot renders a verdict no courtroom can soften. The town fractures along the rails and along the story each side needs to survive—self-defense for the railroad men, cold-blood for the Texans.Hovering at the edge is James Riley, a frail eighteen-year-old with consumption and no fear left to spend. His quiet loyalty to McCluskey changes the odds in ways bluster never could, turning a feud into a fuse. As McCluskey flees, hears he's cleared, and boards the return train, the badge feels like a shield, but the grass by the tracks says otherwise. We stop at the moment before the ambush, the air heavy with lead that hasn't flown yet, and a town holding its breath. If you're drawn to Old West history, railroad town politics, true crime on the frontier, and the anatomy of honor cultures colliding with new power, this chapter delivers vivid storytelling, textured context, and a cliff that promises a hard landing. In this episode we sit down with Carl McCluskey, the quietly obsessive mastermind behind Crisp, the cult London pizzeria that has gone from a backstreet Hammersmith pub to one of the most sought after tables in the city. Carl walks us through the whirlwind first three weeks of his new Marlborough site and the sheer graft behind bringing a tiny pop up operation into a polished, high pressure restaurant setting. From staff struggles and stretching stations held together with rope to finally stepping into a dream kitchen, it is a rare look at the leap from local hero to full scale powerhouse.Carl breaks down the craft behind his pizzas, including the infamous Vecna, born by accident during a chaotic Halloween party when he grabbed hot honey and burrata as a last minute experiment. He shares the Reddit conspiracies about his secret hydration levels, the ongoing myth that his dough sits in trays, and why he refuses to reveal the tiny tweaks that make Crisp different. He explains how his cousin Pedro became the best oven man in the world, how the team makes up to forty litres of hot honey a week, and why scaling too fast would destroy the magic. The conversation turns to the business side, where Carl opens up about the heartbreak of leaving the original Hammersmith pub after impossible lease demands from Stonegate. He tells the wild stories that came with success, from seven hour queues to customers offering a thousand pounds in cash for a table. He recalls the day Dave Portnoy's 8.1 review changed everything, the surreal moment an American number rang asking for margaritas, and the sudden global spike in calls from fans desperate to try his pizza. There is also the now legendary saga of the toilet graffiti that became a t-shirt, a Wi-Fi code, and a small legal dispute.Carl's life story threads through the episode, from his days as a semi pro footballer playing alongside the Wealdstone Raider to being raised in his nan's old school London pub. He reveals the New York and LA inspirations behind his food, why an all day John and Vinnie's style concept could be his next move, and the places he eats on his own perfect food weekend. Honest, funny, and completely unguarded, this is Carl McCluskey at his best. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This is a passion project, a DIY operation, and Pete would love for your help in promoting what he's convinced is a unique and spirited look at an often-ignored art form. The intro song for The Chills at Will Podcast is “Wind Down” (Instrumental Version), and the other song played on this episode was “Hoops” (Instrumental)” by Matt Weidauer, and both songs are used through ArchesAudio.com. Please tune in for Episode 291 with second time guest Ruben Reyes, Jr. His debut story collection, There is a Rio Grande in Heaven, was a finalist for The Story Prize. Archive of Unknown Universes is his first novel, an inventive and original one, and it was published in July 2025. This episode airs on August 29. In this episode of the Revenue Builders Podcast, hosts John McMahon and John Kaplan welcome Steve McCluskey to delve into the essentials of data-driven sales leadership. They discuss why a foundational "playbook" is crucial before implementing metrics, how to balance activity with accomplishment, and the importance of creating a simple, effective operating rhythm. Drawing on extensive experience, Steve shares practical examples, like the "Magnificent Seven" principle, to illustrate how leaders can use data not for micromanagement, but for targeted coaching, developing talent, and ultimately, driving predictable revenue growth.ADDITIONAL RESOURCESLearn more about Steve McCluskey:https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevemccluskey/Watch Force Management's Panel Discussion on AI in Sales Leadership: https://hubs.ly/Q03rlW4ZDownload the CRO Strategy Checklist: https://hubs.li/Q03f8LmX0Enjoying the podcast? It's just mindset.""The biggest point of leadership is the coaching aspect of it. You're not gonna read a list of metrics and be able to tell somebody what they're doing great... You have to watch the swing.""People don't leave their job. They leave their leaders.""If you can navigate that simply and, and in a, you know, through those metrics, that's so important. Michael F. Cannon and Neal McCluskey let us listen in on their ongoing 20-year debate over who has the more difficult job -- fixing health care or education. McCluskey argues that government's monopolistic control over K-12 education and compulsory schooling creates a more fundamental threat to freedom, while Cannon contends that health care is even more dysfunctional due to cascading government interventions that have created the world's most expensive and gap-ridden health system. Both scholars explore how government subsidies drive up costs in their respective sectors and outline their visions for more libertarian, market-based alternatives.Show Notes:https://www.cato.org/free-society/summer-2025/federal-failure-parental-freedom-story-movement https://www.cato.org/blog/supreme-court-right-reading-opt-outs-thats-not-enough https://www.cato.org/blog/top-5-reasons-end-us-department-education Hosted on Acast. The ordinary jobs that come to the Davis Book Menders include wear-and-tear repairs, like fixing torn pages or tattered covers, but some damage is unusual — like the books that displayed tire treads or evidence of use as a trivet. Whatever the problem, the menders can fix it, says Karen McCluskey, a member of the group … with some exceptions, such as the book they bagged and discarded because it seemed like a biohazard. The menders gather each Tuesday to work around a long table (see photo) inside the main Davis library, and on the first Tuesday of each month they host a book-repair cafe for anyone who wants to come in for help fixing their own books. Publisher's Weekly says U.S. sales of printed books totaled 782.7 million in 2024, up 4.4 million from 2023. Today on Davisville we talk with McCluskey about the work and the satisfaction of mending thousands of books each year.
