Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. Ocean National Bank was his first robbery. It took over three months to plan and his financier Fredericka “Marm” Mandelbaum invested $3,000 in the planning which yielded over $750,000 in return. The heist had a three day set up that included drilling from the basement to the vault, using a gadget called a “little joker” to capture the safe's combination, and returning on Sunday night, when the safe was most full, to make the extraction. According to Wikipedia, The police captain put on the case noticed that Leslie had withdrawn money but since Leslie was known as a educated architect, he did not make the connection. Billy Saas and guest-host Ben Wilson speak with Martha McCluskey about the ins and outs of the Law & Political Economy movement. McCluskey is Professor Emerita at the University at Buffalo School of Law and a progressive institution-builder. She has made foundational contributions to feminist research and activism in and beyond the academy, focusing on interrelations between economic and legal institutions. A long-time organizer of the Class Crits project and president of the Association for the Promotion of Political Economy and the Law (APPEAL), McCluskey has recently spearheaded the new Law & Political Economy Collective, which insists that “a better understanding of law's role in upholding the present distribution of wealth and state power is crucial to a more just, sustainable future.” McCluskey's expertise with construction and maintenance of durable institutions for the development and circulation of socially- and politically-attuned critical legal scholarship gives good reasons for hope in this time of great political unease. Director Imogen McCluskey continues her exploration of suburban Australia with the comedy-drama film Nugget is Dead: A Christmas Story. This delightfully relatable Aussie Xmas tale was written by Jenna Owen and Vic Zerbst, who both act in the film alongside Aussie screen legends like Gia Carides, Damien Garvey, Ed Oxenbould, Steve Rodgers, Mandy McElhinney, Kerry Armstrong, and Tiriel Mora, and more.Steph Stool is a dermatologist in training who has her feet in two worlds. The shiny sheen of Sydney where the pull of her bougie boyf (Alec Snow) sees her drawn towards spending Christmas with his family. Early in the film we meet his mum (Tara Morice) who gives Steph the complicated and intense rundown of what's expected from their family experience. For them, Christmas will be the 'introduce the family to the girlfriend', a factor that further drives a wedge between Steph and her family who she carries a level of shame about. But, Steph's disconnection with home is short lived when she receives a call from her mum (Gia Carides) saying that the family dog, Nugget, is dead. Well, not exactly dead, he's just not feeling that well. Not wanting to miss seeing the pup she grew up with one last time, Steph rushes home to be with her family, all the while thinking she'll be able to return in time for her boyfriends Christmas. What follows is a rapturously delightful and utterly joyous celebration of Australian Xmas, full of a deep reverence for the tackiness of the tinsel strewn households, replete with a Coles bought pavlova and overburnt sausages on the barbecue. There's an emotional honesty and warmth to Nugget is Dead that is found in Imogen's first feature film, 2019's Suburban Wildlife, a narrative that explored the pressing disconnect that younger generations face when they want to seek a life out of the suburbs and in the city where they can grow. That concern is within Nugget is Dead, but it's presented in such a deeply relatable and enjoyable manner that, by the time the climax arrives, you're not completely aware that you're shedding tears of joy and sadness at once.As you'll hear in the following interview with Imogen, I loved this film a lot, and particularly enjoy experiencing the work of Imogen McCluskey and seeing how her perspective on Australia grows and changes on screen. Throughout the conversation, we chat about working alongside actors who are also the writers of the film, what her time at the AFI Directors Conservatory taught her as a filmmaker, and what she hopes audiences will get from watching Nugget is Dead together.Nugget is Dead: A Christmas Story launches on Stan. on 21 November 2024. Interview with John A. McCluskey, President & CEO of Alamos Gold Inc.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/alamos-gold-tsxagi-high-margin-growth-strategy-built-for-shareholders-4473Recording date: 17th September 2024Alamos Gold, a diversified gold producer with operations in Canada and Mexico, is positioning itself as a prime investment opportunity in the current bullish gold market. The company's strategic growth initiatives, cost control measures, and focus on operational efficiency make it an attractive option for investors seeking exposure to the gold sector.John McCluskey, President and CEO of Alamos Gold, paints an optimistic picture of the gold market: "I think it's as positive an environment as I've seen in my career. Everything is lining up for what I consider a lengthy and very bullish run for gold right now." This positive outlook is underpinned by various macroeconomic factors, including low interest rates, inflationary pressures, and global economic uncertainties.Alamos Gold has grown impressively in recent years, increasing its gold reserves from less than 2 million ounces to 13.5 million ounces. The company currently produces around 600,000 ounces annually and has set an ambitious target to reach 1 million ounces of production by the end of the 2020s. This growth trajectory is supported by strategic acquisitions and successful exploration efforts.A key strength of Alamos Gold is its ability to control costs while benefiting from rising gold prices. McCluskey notes, "We've been one of the few companies that's kept costs flat while the gold price has been rising, so we're generating a lot more free cash flow."This cost discipline has resulted in expanding margins and increased profitability, setting Alamos apart from many of its industry peers. The company's recent acquisition of Argonaut Gold's Magino mine demonstrates its growth strategy. This acquisition offers significant synergies with Alamos' existing operations and provides additional optionality for future expansion. The deal, valued at approximately $550 million, is expected to deliver substantial value to shareholders.Alamos Gold is also at the forefront of technological innovation in the mining industry. The company invests heavily in productivity improvements, implementing advanced technologies and equipment to lower costs and increase operational efficiency. This focus on innovation positions Alamos well for long-term success in a competitive industry. From an investment perspective, Alamos Gold offers several compelling attributes. The company maintains a conservative balance sheet with relatively low debt levels, providing financial flexibility. Its operational solid performance and the positive outlook for gold prices suggest the potential for further share price appreciation. Additionally, Alamos has demonstrated a commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, aligning with the growing investor focus on sustainable and responsible mining practices. However, potential investors should be aware of the risks associated with gold mining investments, including price volatility, operational challenges, and geopolitical risks in mining jurisdictions. Despite these risks, Alamos Gold's overall outlook remains positive, supported by its strong fundamentals and the favorable macroeconomic environment for gold.In conclusion, Alamos Gold presents an attractive opportunity for investors seeking exposure to the gold sector. With its robust growth profile, cost discipline, and strategic focus on productivity improvements, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on the current bullish trend in the gold market.—View Alamos Gold's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/alamos-gold-incSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Chef Dave “Smoke” McCluskey, an official member of the Mohawk nation, has spent more than 30 years in the culinary industry, in everything from fine dining kitchens to catering gigs to even organizing and hosting boucheries. Those are traditional gatherings centered around communal hog butchering that also offer a space to celebrate local foodways, and swap knowledge, stories, and seeds. It was at one such gathering that he was gifted some corn, and from that came Corn Mafia, his research, education and micromilling project to explore native foodways. He's participated in many food festivals through the years, including in 2022, when he hosted a cooking demo as part of Virginia Tech's Center for Food Systems and Community Transformation. He partners with South Carolina's Congaree Milling to produce small batch products, from hominy to masa, which he primarily sells via word of mouth. Dave currently lives in Augusta and is the Chef de Cuisine at the Augusta Mariott Hotel.

Killers of the Flower Moon has brought the world's attention to one of the most vile murder cases in American history, and at the center of it all was Mollie Kyle-Burkhart. Mollie would have grown up in the traditional way of her Osage ancestors, but by the time she was an adult, her family was wealthy, and she lived in a big home with white servants and with a white husband. Mollie lost all of her family members during the reign of terror, and I can't imagine what it must have been like to go through something that horrible. On today's episode, we get into her story of resilience. Bibliography Osage Nation. “About.” Accessed February 25, 2024. https://www.osagefoundation.org/about. Regular listeners have probably noticed that I'm trying a few different things with this series. I wanted to hear more women's voices, with more varied experiences and today's guest is one of those! I first met Karyn McCluskey 12 years ago when I was editor of Red magazine and we gave her a woman of the year award for her role in reducing gang violence by 50% in Glasgow, formerly known as the murder capital of Europe. In large part, thanks to Karyn, Glasgow became one of the safest cities in the UK. Karyn has been advocating for a more enlightened and empathetic approach to violent crime for most of her career. She became a nurse at 17 before training as forensic psychologist, and then joined the police where she has worked - extremely successfully - to bring a public health approach to violence reduction. All this while being a single parent. I met Karyn at her office, off a busy road on the outskirts of Edinburgh, as you'll hear!, where she is now Chief Executive of Community Justice Scotland to talk about constantly being the only woman in the room, breastfeeding in the police car park, and how she's avoided vicarious trauma. We also discussed why she was “slightly terrified of the menopause” (no not Glasgow knife gangs, menopause…), why parenting is just an exercise guilt, high heels, HRT and why her mantra is “feel bad move on”CW there is discussion of violence, sexual abuse and domestic violence• If you enjoyed this episode, you might also like my chats with Nicola Sturgeon and Val McDermid.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Annie's new book, The Mess We're In and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Summary Ryan Zimmerman (MLB Stats; Wikipedia) and Marc Polymeropoulos (Twitter; LinkedIn) join Andrew to discuss intelligence and America's pastime. From the SpyCast Field of Dreams. What You'll Learn Intelligence Sign-stealing and codebreaking Glue guys and teamwork Ethics in baseball and espionage Clutch and pinch hitters in espionage and baseball Reflections Daring to fail Stepping up to the plate of life And much, much more… Episode Notes Buy me some peanuts and crackerjack. Few things in the world compare to sitting back, putting your feet up, and cracking open a cold one while watching the World Series. For the 2021 World Series Marc joined us for a fantastic discussion on the links between baseball and espionage. How do we top that? A baseball fanatic ex-CIA officer? Why, how about getting a first-round draft pick, World Series Champion with over 6500 at-bats? Done! Enter Ryan Zimmerman, Mr. National! Ever wondered about signs-stealing, how to run a baseball counterintelligence operation, or what some of the many, many links are between baseball and espionage? You've come to the right place for a discussion that goes to the bottom of the ninth inning over a two-episode conversation. Ryan played for the Nationals from 2005, when he was a first-round draft pick, through to 2021, when his #11 jersey was retired. He is an ex- All-Star, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove winner, and 2019 World Series Champion. Marc is a highly decorated former CIA operations officer who specialized in counterterrorism, the Middle East, and South Asia. Prior to his retirement, he served at CIA headquarters in charge of clandestine operations in Europe and Eurasia. He is the author of the 2021 book, “Clarity in Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the CIA.” And… “Big Data” is upending many fields, not least baseball and espionage. Gaining a competitive edge is central to both activities, the big argument is about how much “soul” is lost along the way. The Houston Astros have been a lighting-rod team, whose “smart and modern” or “cold and cynical” approach has been discussed at Penn's Wharton School of Business and in the pages of the Harvard Business Review. Quotes of the Week "I think “Dare to Fail” is enormous. I would want you to put me up at the bases load in the bottom of the ninth. I'll take it every single time. Even if I feel like I have zero chance, I want to be there." - Ryan Zimmerman "You know, you have to have that mentality in these professions." - Marc Polymeropoulos Resources *Andrew's Recommendation* Moneyball, M.
