Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded conversation with Billy Wynne, author of The Empty Path: Finding Fulfillment Through the Radical Art of Lessening, published this year by New World Library. Providing an antidote to our never-ending quest for more, mindfulness teacher, successful entrepreneur, and Zen Buddhist Billy Wynne shows that embracing emptiness can declutter the mind and distill our experience of daily life to its essential beauty, clarity and joy. Billy Wynne has studied Buddhism and mindfulness for 30 years. He received lay Zen Buddhist ordination from the Zen Center of Denver, where he now teaches classes and serves on the board. He is also a certified meditation teacher in the Insight tradition under Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach. After traveling the world with an NGO that provides medical care to children, Billy launched a career as a health and well-being entrepreneur. He founded and serves as Chairman of Impact Health, a consultancy serving large health care organizations including Cleveland Clinic, Fortune 500 companies, and charitable foundations. In 2020, Billy founded one of the world's first alcohol-free bars, Awake. Frequently quoted by national news outlets, including the New York Times and Washington Post, he now helps mission-driven organizations refocus their vision and maximize their impact. In addition to the Zen Center of Denver, Billy has served on the boards of Operation Smile, Health365, and Cherish Children Adoption International. In 2023, he was appointed by Governor Jared Polis to serve on Colorado's Natural Medicine Advisory Board, which is implementing the state's new psychedelic therapy program. He received a B.A. from Dartmouth College and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. For fun, Billy plays keyboard in two improvisational rock bands. “Sound is probably one of the most prevalent things that we focus on with our children at Operation Smile. And you know, they're so thankful that they have, they work as hard on their homework for speech therapy as they do in school, right? And, you know, as both of us sort of being maybe teased and bullied in school, maybe we were actually, excited about doing our homework. And maybe we did study a little bit harder, and we did our homework. These kids are amazing pupils when they know that they're getting this free therapy to help optimize their speaking, and then you go back a year later and then you hear the kids again, and you understand every word that they say. It just puts a smile on your face.” – Mark Climie-Elliott This episode is the second half of my discussion with CEO and Chief Smile Officer of Operation Smile Canada Foundation Mark Climie-Elliott as we talk about Mark's work with Laura, a particularly memorable patient who's gone on to make a positive influence of her own, the time and effort that building language skills can take even after a successful cleft-palate surgery, and more about Operation Smile's plans to open a hundred new hospitals around the world over the next five years. This conversation is being released during Podcasthon, so thank you to Jeremie and all the wonderful staff there putting this initiative together. (0:00:00) - Operation Smile Volunteer Opportunities and ImpactThe second half of our conversation starts as Mark tells us about how people can reach out to Operation Smile and the need for volunteers on every level. “We are always looking for trained and skilled pediatric specialists,” he says, “in anesthesiology, in plastic surgery, specifically if you have cleft specialty, we're looking for educators.” We also talk about Laura, an Operation Smile patient who's continuing to make a positive impact. “There's Laura,” he recalls, “seventeen years old, telling them that they don't have to worry, ‘Look at me.' And so she shared the story of her journey and the parents, all of a sudden, like those tears that were running down their faces became tears of joy.”(0:08:20) - Stories of Resilient Cleft Lip PatientsMark and I talk about our own experiences with bullying, and how it impacts the children Operation Smile works with. He tells us more about the organization's anti-bullying efforts and the hope that working with young people has given him. “When I look at these next generations that are now coming together with better acceptance,” he says, “with better acceptance, with what I call different lenses, you know, and while bullying and teasing still exists and it still needs to be addressed, there are ways in which students can get involved.” We discuss how sound plays a pivotal role in recovery and developing underdeveloped language skills, and the reward of seeing...

The numbers just increase and we're about to... launch something very special as this podcast is being aired, where we're going to really build and strengthen one hundred district hospitals around the world.” – Mark Climie-Elliott This episode's guest is the CEO and Chief Smile Officer of Operation Smile Canada Foundation. Operation Smile is one of the world's largest volunteer-delivered global medical charities, serving children born with cleft conditions in low and middle-income countries. Prior to joining Operation Smile, he spent more than forty years serving in a variety of leadership roles in the non-profit sector, children's rehabilitation, and international hospital start-ups in the Middle East. His name is Mark Climie-Elliott, and you'll want to hear where this discussion will take us. (0:00:00) - Sound, Surgery, and Changing LivesOur conversation begins with Mark's early memories of sound, an experience that may have been as memorable for his neighbors. “The first time sound really got into me,” he recalls, “was when I found the pots and pans underneath the counter and I found the wooden spoons. Oh and let me say, sound resonated not just from our home but right through the neighborhood.” We discuss how Operation Smile began back in 1982, and just how serious, and even life-threatening, the need for cleft-palate treatment options in the developing world has become. “It was then that both Dr. Magee and Kathy realized that there are so many people around the world,” he explains, “that don't have the benefit when they get sick and need surgery to actually be able to access it. It's just not there.”(0:11:24) - Surgical Program and Patient CriteriaWe talk more about what causes a cleft lip and the enormous impact it can have on children's speech, health, and nutrition. “Cleft lip and palate are some of the world's highest birth anomalies,” he tells us, “they can happen, we say one in every three minutes. Did you know that your skin's health is a direct reflection of your overall well-being? In this week's episode, Dr. Mina and Dr. Cory Goldberg explore the powerful connection between skin health and lifestyle choices, emphasizing how diet, sun protection, and habits impact the way our skin looks and ages. They touch on how the beauty industry is shifting towards a more natural and preventive approach to skincare, and why achieving a balanced, healthy complexion goes beyond just external treatments. Key Takeaways: - Skin health is a reflection of overall health. - The presence of senescent cells in the skin can harm overall health. - Sun exposure increases harmful senescent cells in the skin. - Oxidative stress from the sun is a major cause of skin damage. - A plant-based diet can improve skin quality and reduce oxidative stress. - Sugar intake contributes to skin aging and health issues. - The beauty industry often focuses on fixing problems rather than prevention. - Natural beauty is about balance and not striving for perfection. - Over-treatment in aesthetics can lead to unnatural appearances. - Trends in plastic surgery are shifting towards more natural results. In This Episode: (03:01) Introduction and Perspectives on Skin Health (08:05) The Impact of Skin on Our Health (14:11) Preventive Measures That One Can Take (18:19) Sugar and Skin Aging (23:16) Setting Realistic Expectations (28:03) Trends in Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Treatments Dr. Cory Goldberg completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Toronto which included the Surgeon Scientist Program, earning him a Master of Applied Science in Biomedical Engineering with a thesis on stem cells. We were proud to welcome René Behr, Chief People Officer at IWC Schaffhausen, onto the EMEA Recruitment podcast.  “True success lies in shaping a future when people and business grow in tandem, leaving a legacy that transcends time.” René has always been fascinated by human dynamics and interactions. He believes that Human Resources is the most influential function in business, because people are critical to success. He cites figures like David Ulrich, the “Father of Modern HR”, inspirational speaker Simon Sinek, and former Google VP of People Operations, Laszlo Bock, as key influences. He also reveals the unexpected profession he's trained in.  Reflecting on his 25-year career, René is most proud of the lasting impact his efforts have had on businesses and people - an impact that goes beyond any single achievement or project. He shares a story about an IWC apprentice from a challenging background who was initially resistant to positive change. Through persistent effort, the apprentice passed his exams and went on to open his own business, where he now educates young apprentices with similar backgrounds. When asked what he would do differently if he had his time again, René highlights that failure makes you stronger. He emphasises the importance of listening to your gut - though it should inform your decisions, not lead them, he adds.  Paul highlights the quote René shared on his LinkedIn profile: “Be the change you want to see” by Gandhi. René explains that he interprets this as championing change and leading by example, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The conversation then turns to IWC Schaffhausen's resilience programme, which has been rolled out from the senior team across the organisation over a two-to-three-year period. This holistic programme equips teams to manage stress, adapt to change, and face challenges. It includes in-person workshops and lunch and learn sessions aligned with monthly themes, exploring personal resilience and extending into leadership. The sessions aim to break the stigma around mental health, with the goal of creating a supportive environment where conversations can lead to real changes in practice. René stresses that the programme's success is measured both qualitatively and quantitatively through engagement surveys, tracking productivity, job satisfaction, and retention rates. It's not just about making people feel good; burnout can be far costlier if not addressed. It's also a long-term KPI that can't be measured during the interview process or when onboarding new hires. When asked what advice he would give to his 21-year-old self, René focuses on embracing challenges and failures as learning opportunities, taking risks while remaining authentic, and staying curious. René's next big dream is to continue shaping the future of work by creating an environment that empowers colleagues to innovate, collaborate, and grow. He looks forward to helping the company navigate changes in its business model and being part of a future where HR has a permanent seat at the table.  The episode ends with René sharing his gratitude. He is thankful for his first manager, who saw potential in him and helped him transition into HR, and for his partner, who has supported him unconditionally. René reminds listeners to work on your personal relationships just as much as your business ones - don't stop. “That's the special thing about kindness. It is so many different things. It can be generosity. It can be forgiveness. It can be trust. Compassion. It's all these things.” Patricia Makatsaria is a Civic Volunteer and Philanthropist who has dedicated herself to her community, promoting kindness and inclusion and striving to empower young leaders. After completing her MBA and Masters degree in Healthcare Administration, Patricia and her husband, Vladimir, moved abroad, embarking on an international life which spanned 23 years, living in Moscow, London, and Singapore.  Patricia's career and life journey has been an untraditional one due to the one constant in her life: change. In her early years, she worked in healthcare–managing an American Dental Clinic, and in private business–owning a distribution business for a luxury Swiss facial care line. Desiring more time to manage an expanding family and their international moves, Patricia moved to a career that gave her more flexibility: volunteering and philanthropy. In addition to a range of school and community volunteer activities, Patricia most notably worked with Operation Smile, an international charity which provides cleft lip and palate surgeries for children in third world countries.  Her experiences on missions in India inspired her to commit to spreading awareness and developing young leaders for Op Smile through fundraising events, student leadership conferences, and the creation of new Operation Smile Clubs in schools. In their family's most recent move, Patricia landed back in the United States. Challenged with the opportunity to reinvent herself, she decided to systematically build a new life around a value that had served her well throughout her life journey: kindness. Patricia's blog on her website, KindnessHabit.org, shares her research and ideas around kindness and her effort to create a kindness habit in her own life. Focused on the core values of kindness, inclusion and the empowerment of youth, Patricia is actively involved in a variety of projects including: Program Director of a positive psychology program for medical trainees at Mount Sinai, Chair of the Garden Committee for New York City's 2nd oldest public park, and Board Member for her high school in Kentucky. Patricia currently resides in New York City with her husband, Vladimir, son, Max, and bernedoodle, Mila. Today, the brand has six products and sells direct-to-consumer, though expansion into retail will come next year. On this episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, Pritika discusses balancing modeling and brand-building, introducing the U.S. consumer to Ayurvedic ingredients, and giving back via Operation Smile, for which she is a global ambassador.

In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover talks with Raj Grover about acquiring and retaining key, top talented, team members and managing a multinational team. See the video here: https://youtu.be/kSc7M1NocuA. Since starting his first company at the age of 22, Raj ( https://ca.linkedin.com/in/raj-grover-86a182185 ) has established himself as one of Canada's foremost business strategists and deal makers. He is the founder of High Tide and its subsidiary companies of Valiant Distribution and Canna Cabana, while also being the co-founder of High Tide's subsidiary, Famous Brandz. Through organic growth and strategic acquisitions, Raj has grown High Tide from one small shop of 2 employees in 2009, into one of Canada's largest cannabis retailers with over 1,000 amazing team members and business interests spanning North America and Europe. While committed to building a strong, profitable, and sustainable business, Raj also believes passionately that those who enjoy success hold a particular responsibility to give back. That is why he has spearheaded High Tide's partnership with World Vision that has seen the company sponsor a growing number of children from developing countries. This partnership has grown substantially since its inception, from the initial sponsorships of three children in 2006 to over 200 sponsorships in 2021. Under Raj's leadership, this number will continue to grow. On a personal level Raj has also been a long-time supporter of Operation Smile, an organization that works to deliver free, safe cleft surgery to children in need saving them from a lifetime of pain and isolation.
