In this episode Barry-John speaks with reformed Neo Nazi Bryon Widner about his time in the extremely violent white supremacist underworld where he committed some disturbingly violent crimes including slicing off a homeless Native American mans ear in order to earn his stripes.Bryon accumulated racist & Nazi tattoos which covered his face and neck as a badge of honour to his fellow gang members and a warning to his enemies.Bryon would come to question the racist ideology that his group boasted and decided to move on with his life. Eventually Bryon helped the FBI to obtain convictions against his former gang members. In this tragic but captivating episode Barry-John speaks with Huwe Burton from the Bronx in New York.On January 3rd, 1989 when Huwe was just 16 years of age, he came home from school to find that his mother had been brutally murdered. After calling the police Huwe was catapulted from being a grieving son to being the prime suspect.He was then sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for which he served 20 years. Huwe was completely innocent of the crime.During this fascinating conversation Huwe discusses the despicable techniques used by the interrogating officers to coerce a confession out of him as well as serving time with hardened career criminals, murderers and rapists while trying to maintain his sanity in the knowledge that he was an innocent man.Huwe never gave up and always maintained his innocence but struggled to get people to believe him with the exception of his beloved father who offered unwavering support for his son throughout his battle for justice. Huwe kept campaigning and writing to organisations protesting his innocence and finally the innocence project offered him a new lease of life by believing in him. In 2009 Huwe was released on parole and alongside The Innocence Project kept campaigning to be exonerated which he eventually was in January 2019. In this weeks episode Barry-John speaks to John Krause who has spent over 12 years of his life behind bars. John was just 4 years old when his father crashed his motorcycle with him riding alongside. Unfortunately his dad passes away but John survived. This unfortunate event had a profound impact on John and was one of the contributing factors to him turning to alcohol and drugs later in his life.Due to addiction issues John has served time in some of the most notorious prisons in the United States including San Quentin where he repeat offenders are thrown in beside seasoned criminals including murderers and rapists.After realising that his life was being wasted and that this wasn't who he was as a person, John turned to god and set his life in a more positive trajectory.Upon being released from prison, John struggled to find meaningful employment due to his criminal history but eventually found his passion. What started off as a hobbey eventually led to John's entrepreneurial skills kicking in and him opening up a coffee roasting company called 'Big House Beans'.John now looks to give back to the community and Big House Beans employing former inmates and addicts in the Bay Area of San Francisco.
