In EP267, we examine the deeply unsettling case of Cary Stayner, the Yosemite Killer. On the surface, Cary seemed quiet--reserved, even overlooked. But behind that silence was a storm of inner torment, obsession, and darkness. What makes his story even more chilling is the irony: Cary Stayner, was the brother of Steven Stayner (who we discussed in EP266), a national hero who survived a childhood abduction. While the world watched one brother's trauma unfold in the headlines, the other battled invisible demons--ones that would eventually erupt in brutal violence. This is not just the story of a killer- it's the story of unresolved trauma, twisted fantasies, and the shadow legacy of a family marked by tragedy.SOURCES: 1) Sund details frantic hunt for wife, daughter: Father-husband testifies during Stayner's preliminary hearing into slayings of 3 Yosemite visitors2) CBS News: The Yosemite Murders -- in photos3)Crime Library: Cary Stayner and the Yosemite Murders4) CBS Sacramento: 25 years later: FBI agent shares how he got Cary Stayner to confess to Yosemite killings5) SF Gate: Overshadowed All His Life / Low-key Cary Stayner took back seat to kidnapped brother6) 20/20 Episode: Evil in Eden
On this episode, we're covering a tale of 2 brothers. 2 brothers who couldn't be more different. Steven and Cary Stayner. The whole saga of the Stayner family is heartbreaking, and one of the strangest cases in true crime. In the early 70s, Steven Stayner was abducted by a predator who in addition to abusing him for 7 years, attempted to make him his son..until he aged out, and the predator tried to make him recruit a new brother. He refused, but the predator found one anyway. Rather than let him put this new boy through the hell he had gone through, Steven and the new boy escaped, and both were reunited with their families. Steven had been gone for 7 years, and the media frenzy made Cary fade into the background. If you're unfamiliarwith the story, I won't spoil it for you as to what happened toCary...but its crazy, and not in a good way.Joining us once again is Jody Plauche, who had some invaluable input into Steven's story, considering he too was abducted by a predator when he was very young. This was a great episode, and thanks to Jody for coming on!You can buy his book that he wrote about his experience, as well the actions that made his father, Gary into a hero here:https://www.amazon.com/Why-Gary-Jody-Plauch%C3%A9-Story/dp/1948903210Got a beer you want Doug toreview? In last week's episode we discussed the abduction and return of Steven Stayner. This week, we discuss Steven's brother Cari and the path he went down that led to multiple murders. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Cari Stayner. While Steven Stayner went on to become a hero after being abducted as a child and later escaping and saving another boy in the process, Steven's older brother Cary went on to achieve just the opposite; he became infamous for the callous and cold blooded crimes that he committed, and by the end of this episode, most listeners will probably be asking, how can two brothers turn out so very different? Jeffrey L. Rinek - In the Name of the Children pt2Nov 7, 2024During his 30-year career with the FBI, Jeff Rinek worked hundreds of investigations involving crimes against children: from stranger abduction to serial homicide to ritualized sexual abuse. Those who do this kind of work are required to plumb the depths of human depravity, to see things no one should ever have to see - and once seen can never forget. There is no more important - or more brutal - job in law enforcement, and few have been more successful than Rinek at solving these sort of cases. Most famously, Rinek got Cary Stayner to confess to all four of the killings known as the Yosemite Park Murders, an accomplishment made more extraordinary by the fact that the FBI nearly pinned the crimes on the wrong suspects. Rinek's recounting of the confession and what he learned about Stayner provides perhaps the most revelatory look ever inside the psyche of a serial killer and a privileged glimpse into the art of interrogation. In the Name of the Children takes readers into the trenches of real-time investigations where every second counts and any wrong decision or overlooked fact can have tragic repercussions. Rinek offers an insider's perspective of the actual case agents and street detectives who are the boots on the ground in this war at home. By placing us inside the heart and mind of a rigorously honest and remarkably self-reflective investigator, we will see with our own eyes what it takes-and what it costs - to try to keep our children safe and to bring to justice those who prey on society's most vulnerable victims. With each chapter dedicated to a real case he worked, In the Name of the Children also explores the evolution of Rinek as a Special Agent - whose unorthodox, empathy-based approach to interviewing suspects made him extraordinarily successful in obtaining confessions - and the toll it took to have such intimate contact with child molesters and murderers. Beyond exploring the devastating impact of these unthinkable crimes on the victims and their families, this book offers an unprecedented look at how investigators and their loved ones cope while living in the spectre of so much suffering.BookBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

In this episode, we delve into the twisted story of Cary Stayner, a man whose name is forever tied to one of California's most infamous crime sprees. Known as the "Yosemite Killer," Stayner committed a series of brutal murders that shocked the nation. But his story takes an even darker turn when juxtaposed with the haunting legacy of his younger brother, Steven Stayner, a national hero who escaped from a notorious kidnapper years earlier.
In this episode of Hart2Heart Dr. Mike Hart is joined by Dr. Sohail Gandhi to discuss the issue of the family physician shortage in the province. With 16,000 licensed family doctors but only 9,500 practicing comprehensive care, Dr. Gandhi sheds light on the reasons behind the shortage, including administrative burdens, compensation issues, and lack of respect from the government. Dr. Hart and Dr. Gandhi discuss potential solutions like improving working conditions and revisiting the healthcare system structure, including introducing deductibles and private healthcare to alleviate stress on the public system. They also dive into the role of other healthcare providers, the impact of policy decisions on patient care, and the pervasive issue of burnout among healthcare workers. When we left you at the end of Part 1, fourteen year old Steven Stayner had escaped from seven years of captivity and abuse at the hands of child predator Kenneth Parnell—and he'd rescued Parnell's next intended victim, a little boy named Timmy White. The story made international headlines, and Steven Stayner became his hometown's living legend. It was March 1980, both boys were back home safe and Kenneth Parnell was behind bars where he belonged, waiting to go to trial. It seemed like a happy ending. But the story doesn't end there. The second half of the Stayner saga is even darker than the first. Justice is denied. Secrets come to light. And another member of the family lets his most depraved fantasies cross over to real life.Big thanks to Mike Moran of the podcast Confessional with Mike Moran for doing much of the work/research on this one and last week's! In classic literature—and in soap operas, too—there are a lot of families who become lightning rods for misfortune. Sometimes it really strains your suspension of disbelief—like, come on, one family could never go through this much tragedy. But every now and then, a family just seems to be haunted by something sinister. From February through July of 1999, the bodies of four women turned up around Yosemite National Park in California—all brutally murdered and mutilated. The killer was a handsome, likable guy named Cary Stayner, who confessed to the four murders once they had him in custody, and is suspected of quite a few more. And during his confession, the investigators realized why his name had seemed familiar to them. Cary was the brother of Steven Stayner, kidnapped by a pedophile in 1972, forced to change his name to Dennis and held captive for years, until one night in 1980 when he walked into a police station and said, “I know my first name is Steven.” That case captured the world, with books and documentaries covering Steven's years-long ordeal and the courage of his escape. Now, nearly 20 years later, the Stayner family was once again in the throes of a nightmare. Would Cary have become a serial killer if his brother had never been kidnapped, or was that evil always lurking inside him? It's a Shakespearean tragedy of a story, and we'll be telling it in two parts. This is part one--the abduction of Steven Stayner.Big thanks to Mike Moran of the Confessional Podcast for doing much of the work/research on this one! True crime always brings tragedy, but few have suffered more than the Stayner family. This is the tale of two brothers and their polarizing experiences in the darkest places of humanity—one as a victim, and one as a perpetrator. Erratta: We went pretty hard at the judge for the 20 month sentence in this case. Apparently California had the most f'd up sentencing laws in history at the time, and the judge's hands were tied. So just imagine that rant was directed at whatever moron legislators thought a second kidnapping should receive a lower sentence than the first. Jeffrey L. Rinek - In the Name of the ChildrenJun 18, 2023Ed's guest is former FBI agent Jeff Rinek who has written a book called 'In The Name Of The Children'During his 30-year career with the FBI, Jeff Rinek worked hundreds of investigations involving crimes against children: from stranger abduction to serial homicide to ritualized sexual abuse. Rinek's recounting of the confession and what he learned about Stayner provides perhaps the most revelatory look ever inside the psyche of a serial killer and a privileged glimpse into the art of interrogation.Jeff gives valuable insight into the case and consequences for the victims, perpetrators and investigators.Part one of a two part interview.Part two is Next Sunday.Book : In the Name of the Children: An FBI Agent's Relentless Pursuit of the Nation's Worst Predators From July 2018childrencrimefbiinvestigationstrue crimeBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Ultimate Prey: The True Story Behind The Yosemite Sightseer MurdersCary Stayner was found guilty for the Yosemite Sightseer Murders, but some people closely associated with the investigation believe that Stayner did not act alone. Law enforcement had the right guys from the beginning, so what in the hell happened? The stories of the victims - Carole and Juli Sund, Silvina Pelosso, and Joie Armstrong did not end with their savage murders, February of 1999. Stephen Sanzeri, former police officer, private investigator and bounty hunter, has investigated their tragic deaths. What he found includes: drug trafficking, child porn, white supremacy, sexual molestation, rape, and bloody violence in the Central Valley of California and stretching to the Foothills. Even more disturbing is the corruption by law enforcement connected to the murders; an unwelcome burden added to Stephen's investigation. Now, for the first time, the real story is finally being told. First hand account of Stephen's initial investigation of a bail jumper that soon leads this x-cop to Alabama and the most dangerous manhunt he's ever experienced; and that's only the beginning. Stephen's investigation spanned over two years with plenty of roadblocks. Law enforcement's lack of cooperation and protection of suspects, to negligent dismissal of statements, reports and evidence by the FBI task force. After reading Ultimate Prey, you will be convinced that Cary Stayner did not act alone. Along with the tragedies of "Waco" and "Ruby Ridge," the Yosemite Sightseer Murders is considered the 3rd worst blunder in the FBI's history, according to Senator Grassley, Iowa. Kind of sums it up...Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Jeffrey L. Rinek - In the Name of the ChildrenJune 18Ed's guest is former FBI agent Jeff Rinek who has written a book called 'In The Name Of The Children'During his 30-year career with the FBI, Jeff Rinek worked hundreds of investigations involving crimes against children: from stranger abduction to serial homicide to ritualized sexual abuse. Rinek's recounting of the confession and what he learned about Stayner provides perhaps the most revelatory look ever inside the psyche of a serial killer and a privileged glimpse into the art of interrogation.Jeff gives valuable insight into the case and consequences for the victims, perpetrators and investigators.Part one of a two part interview.Part two is Next Sunday.Book : In the Name of the Children: An FBI Agent's Relentless Pursuit of the Nation's Worst Predators From July 2018buy the book https://amzn.to/3uEqY8xThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
Compared to its neighbors Barrie and Collingwood, Stayner may be small, but not too small that it is immune to homelessness. We heard about a meeting held last night to address the big issue appearing in the small community. Barefoot....outside....in the winter? This morning, our very own Jared Hillel met up with a barefooter in Muskoka, whose passion for going shoeless may just convince you to take up this lifestyle as well. For the first time in its history, the YMCA Peace Medal was presented posthumously in Owen Sound ... to a beloved restaurateur who died after a chilling assault. The CEO of the YMCA joined me to talk about the legacy of Sharif Rahman What are you doing this weekend? How about taking a dip into a frosty lake? Sue Kenney, also known as Barefoot Sue, convinced our show director Jared Hillel that he should come for a swim.

Kind of sums it up...This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

Why does the name Stayner ring a bell? Because last week Ash and new co-host Ali talked about the story of Steven Stayner, who was just 7 years old when he was kidnapped by 2 men while he was walking home from school. If you haven't listened to episode 138 yet, make sure you do that before you jump into this one! This week Ali tells Ash about Steven Stayner's older brother Cary, who grew up to be a serial killer. Yes, you read that right. How much can one family take?! Also, ooo Cary would hate this description because it mentions Steven so much, and Cary had a tiny problem with jealousy. We're releasing this 2 days early because we're so excited for Ali's first story to air and we know y'all have probably been on the edge of your seats since last week! Trigger warnings for this episode include: suicide ideation, murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, and rape. It's every parent's worst nightmare, the image of your child's face helplessly peering out the rear window of a stranger's car as it drives away from you and slips into the unknown. For Kay and Dilbert Stayner, this nightmare became a reality when their seven-year-old son, Steven, was kidnapped on his way home from school in Merced, CA, in 1972. For seven long years, Steven's family searched for him while he was living in northern California with his abductor, Kenneth Parnell. Steven's story is one of tragedy, sorrow, and unexpected heroism as he plotted his escape and saved the life of Parnell's newest victim, five-year-old Timmy White. Steven's story was captured in the very popular 1989 mini-series, I Know My First Name is Steven. But the Stayner family's story doesn't end with them reuniting with their son after seven long years. In a bizarre twist, more tragedy befalls this family as Steven's older brother sets out to make a name for himself in the most horrific way. Corrections:In the episode, we failed to mention the mini-series was written by Mike Echols who later turned the manuscript into a book. Movie first, book second. The mini-series first aired in November, 1989, not 1983.Sources for this episode include but are not limited to:https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/a-child-abductees-journey-back/https://abcnews.go.com/US/video/march-14-1980-interview-steven-stayner-60269400https://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/01/04/molester.arrest/https://abcnews.go.com/US/steven-cary-stayner-tale-brothers-horror-heroism/story?id=60529944https://www.eastbayexpress.com/oakland/inside-the-monster/Content?oid=1069138For 12+ hours on this case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SEpITqnESI&list=PL6hM2D6rSybBXr597MN3H_lEkOaeDwgBL&index=15&t=0sWant ad-free episodes PLUS 2 bonus episodes a month? On February 15th, 1999, Carole Sund, her 15-year-old daughter Juli, and 16-year-old family friend Silvina Pelosso went missing from their motel room during a trip to Yosemite National Park. An intensive search ensued as law enforcement searched for the trio. The bodies of Carole and Silvina would later be found charred in the shell of their burnt rental car, with Juli's remains to be discovered separately just days later. Horror would again strike Yosemite months later when 26-year-old Joie Armstrong was found murdered near her cabin. Two days later, law enforcement tracked down Cary Stayner, the man responsible for the string of crimes. Former FBI Agent Jeffrey Rinek was the lead investigator on the case. He shares details from the investigation, as well as how he was able to obtain a confession from Stayner himself. More about Jeff: Jeffrey Rinek retired from the FBI after 30 years of service. Throughout his career, Rinek worked on active and cold cases related to crimes against children. In 2003, Rinek received the California Sexual Assault Investigators Association Investigator of the Year Award, making him the first FBI agent to be given the title. In 2006, he was given the International Homicide Investigators Association Award for Excellence. In his book, In the Name of Children, Rinek details some of the cases that defined his career, as well as the impact they had on him. Jeff is also the author of In the Name of the Children: An FBI Agent's Relentless Pursuit of the Nation's Worst Predators. Stephen and Cary may have been brothers, but they were alike in blood only. While one embodied goodness, the brother we are covering in part 2 of this series had wires crossed from the beginning. Exacerbated and awoken from the vast familial and media attention surrounding Stephen, Cary's murderous tendencies led to a killing spree in 1999 which made him known as the Yosemite Park Slayer. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tooclosepodcast/support
In this heart-wrenching series, we are looking at the tragedies that fell upon the Stayner family, and these events are on completely different ends of the spectrum. In part one, we look into the kidnapping and sexual abuse of 7-year old Stephen Stayner at the hands of child molester Kenneth Parnell. Stephen's innocence is matched only by the goodness in his heart, and his bravery saved not only his own life, but the life of another potential victim as well. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tooclosepodcast/support

This episode we are taking a break from our regular cases to talk about the documentary on the streaming channel HULU called Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story. It's 3 episodes about the kidnapping and return of Steven Stayner, the crimes of Cary Stayner and the experiences of their family. Here our thoughts on these episodes and more on this episode of California True Crime.
Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story (Hulu) is a three-episode series following the story of the Stayner family, a family of five children from Merced, California. On December 4, 1972, seven-year-old Stayner was abducted by child molester Kenneth Parnell. At age 14 he managed to escape with another of Parnell's victims, Timothy White. Steven's older brother Cary was convicted of the murders of four women between February and July 1999near Yosemite National Park. Stayner was sentenced to death for the four murders, and is still on death row at San Quentin Penitentiary in California. Kate interviews Ashley Stayner, Steven's daughter who lost her father in a motorcycle accident when she was 4 years old. She also speaks with April Rocha who had an eerie experience with Cary Stayner with her friend in 1999, months before he was arrested.
