There is a chapter in Northern Ireland history referred to as ‘The Troubles.' It was a series of violent conflicts between the Protestants who were Loyalists to the UK and the Roman Catholic nationalist Republicans, who wanted Northern Ireland to become part of Ireland. After almost three decades of conflict, it ended with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Well, the violence ended... but the pain is still there, the stories are still there, the emotions are still there. While touring around Belfast, I learned about the Conflicting Stories political history tour - half of the tour is led by a Catholic Republican and the other half is led by a Protestant Loyalist. Oh, and they both were murderers who spent time in prison for their crimes. This episode is about seeing two sides of Belfast - two different stories on two sides of a gate by two different murderers. If you've traveled around Europe, perhaps you have noticed an occasional 3 inch brass square in the ground. If you have, you've seen a piece of the world's largest decentralized memorial. There are actually over 75,000 of these squares around Europe. They are called Stolpersteines (also called stumbling stones). Stoplersteines are made to recognize those whose lives were negatively impacted because of the Nazis. On a trip through Cologne, Germany, I had the chance to attend the laying of a stone in memory of a victim.
