What if you could take a long break from running and not lose any fitness? The theory is simple; train harder now so that you have mileage “banked” for later when you might be training less. We'll look more closely at whether this could be an effective strategy with topics including: Why mileage matters for building aerobic fitness How long it takes to lose fitness during a break from training What is supercompensation and whether it helps you to hold onto fitness longer Whether it matters how you spread mileage across a training cycle or if it's only the total volume that counts Whether banking mileage is an effective strategy that you should consider adopting Don't let a break eat into your fitness and find out if you can really bank fitness beforehand. Our runners have actually been using this for years to start running and stick with it so they could improve their health and feel better not only physically but mentally as well! Over the past 5 years, I have created and redefined the #1 way to stay healthy while running well into your 40's, 50's, and beyond. If you follow this system, you might be surprised at how quickly you enjoy running and how quickly you can start feeling stronger and running longer In this episode, I will break down the entire process of how to start running using this 6-Step process and I will also share with you 3 common mistakes beginner runners make when starting out. If you're thinking about New Year's resolutions or setting new running goals for 2025, this is the episode you've been waiting for! In this final edition of Run With It for 2024, we're talking about goal-setting with Christian Swann, Professor of Psychology at Southern Cross University. Christian offers so many great pointers on how we can set flexible running goals that account for life's curve balls. We discuss the importance of reflecting on your running year, how to set goals that are uplifting to pursue, even when things don't go as planned, and why focusing on enjoyment is key to staying motivated long-term. Christian also encourages us to set three different types of running goals for 2025: listen out for those at the end of the episode! Christian Swann's research focuses on the psychology of sport, exercise and physical activity. His specific expertise is on improving quality of experience (e.g., flow, enjoyment), promoting mental health, and understanding how to best use goal-setting. Wishing you all a wonderful start to 2025!
How do you fuel a marathon Need to fuel every 20-30 min 60 grams of carbs per hour 1000 mg of sodium per hour This is not something that should be new, This should be practiced How to handle upset stomach due to gels during the marathon Fueling during training How much speed work should you do in the offseason: I won't actually run a 5k until the spring Type of training during the offseason from the marathon training Lots of ways to approach this Consistency is most important: not just runs but workouts/specifics Not overdoing it Depends on your long terms goals

Let's exploring countdown framing—a powerful strategy where you start with a total goal and count down, not up. This approach, sparked by a post I saw about the remaining days of 2024, can bring new motivation to your running. Counting down the days left in the year made me feel that extra push, so today we're applying that same idea to training and races. Let's make the final stretch of any goal as rewarding as the finish line!Key TopicsCountdown Framing ExplainedHow this technique gives you a clear sense of progress, making it feel like you're always moving closer to the finish line. Why Countdown Framing WorksIncreased Perceived Progress: Seeing goals shrink as you go makes every step feel meaningful.Goal Gradient Effect: Get an energy boost by counting down to zero, creating a powerful finish.Reduced Overwhelm: Start with a bigger number and let each mile or minute feel like progress toward a smaller goal.Enhanced Satisfaction: Each step counted down adds a feeling of completion and reward to your runs. How to Implement Countdown Framing in RunningFor Training: Set your timer or distance countdown, and enjoy the sense of completion at each mile. For Races: Mentally count down each mile or minute to stay motivated, especially in the toughest sections.Garden Cup Link to save 20%

If you're lining up for 100 miles, your mindset needs to be strong. And that requires you to take a deeper look inside yourself to make sure that you have the trust and confidence to take on the miles. For David Roche, he exuded this confidence, mindset, and belief in himself when he won his very first 100 mile race at the Leadville 100, shattering a course record that stood for many years. And he credits a lot of his victory to his mindset, consistency, and belief in himself that he's built over the many years. David Roche is a running coach, podcast host of the Some Work, All Play Podcast, elite runner, and thought leader in the running space who has multiple podium finishes and is now the Leadville 100 course record holder. In this episode, David shares how he was able to shift his mindset to dive fully into 100 miles with confidence, how he was able to build himself and his abilities to do great things in running, and training principles that helped him to be successful at Leadville. In this podcast episode, Coach TJ and Zoe discuss various topics related to training and recovery for athletes. They answer questions from listeners, talk about transitioning from training by heart rate to incorporating RPE-based training, and discuss the importance of setting goals and embracing periods without big goals. They also provide insights on recovery from races and how to listen to your body's signals. The episode emphasizes the importance of using a combination of tools, such as heart rate and RPE, to have a well-rounded understanding of your fitness and effort levels. In this part of the conversation, Zoe discusses the use of heart rate training as a complementary method to RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) training. She emphasizes the importance of using heart rate to understand how the body is responding to training and how it aligns with perceived effort. Zoe also talks about the significance of setting short and long-term goals and the struggle athletes face when they don't have a specific goal on the calendar. She encourages athletes to focus on their individual motivations and values, and to find joy in running without always working towards a specific goal. Finally, Zoe shares her criteria for selecting an A-race, which includes deeply wanting the goal, feeling a sense of fear or uncertainty, choosing a logical next step, being willing to change habits or beliefs, requiring help from others, and allowing the goal to align with the life the athlete wants to live. 00:00 Introduction and Overview 03:09 Transitioning from Heart Rate to RPE 09:43 Race Recovery and Listening to Your Body 11:33 Embracing a Season Without Big Goals 14:45 Missed Days of Training and Shoe Replacement 21:15 Using Heart Rate and RPE for Training 31:07 Using Heart Rate Training 33:38 Finding Joy in Running Without a Goal 36:09 Focusing on Individual Motivations 43:02 Goals Aren't the Only Way to Grow 47:51 How Goals Transform Habits and Beliefs 54:11 Requiring Help for A-Races

Most runners know that doing at least some strength training is beneficial but figuring out how to fit this into a training schedule can be difficult. On today's show, coach Andie joins us to cover the “how” and “why” of fitting strength work into your training schedule so you can get all of the performance benefits without feeling like you're compromising your runs. We get that most of you listening love to run and probably spend a lot of time getting in your easy runs and workouts. That's why we're focusing on strength work as a complement to run training and not something you need to choose between. In fact, proper strengthening can dramatically lower your risk of injury to help you run longer and healthier. Nailing the timing and frequency of these workouts will help you progress in the sport even without changes to your running. You also don't need to spend a lot of time to see these benefits. The key though, is doing the right kind of training for your running goals. During the show, we'll help you find this perfect balance between strength work and running with topics such as: The benefits incorporating regular strength training into your routine The muscle groups and exercises that are most important for long-distance running Determining the right timing and frequency of strength training for your goals Whether it's better to strength train before or after running How to adjust your strength work as you get closer to goal races It can be such a challenge to strike this perfect balance and I'm excited to share this conversation with you on how to fit strength work together with your running. In this edition of RC spotlight we hear from Frederich Hayem (Fred), a relatively new runner who has achieved rapid success since taking up the sport just over a year ago. He is the perfect example of how good training and learning from your mistakes is the best way to improve as an athlete. He joined our coaching program with the goal of running his first marathon and crushed it, running a 3:29. Despite some injury and setbacks, he has taken several minutes off of his already impressive half marathon PR and as he moves into a new age group, he is only continuing to get faster. Fred attributes much of his success to consistent strength training and sticking to a plan without stressing about hitting mileage or paces exactly. To learn more about Fred's story and growth as an athlete we'll chat about topics including: How Fred used his background in strength training to help his running performance Why consistency is king when it comes to improvement in running What it means to be a “smart runner” Why you should avoid focusing on perfection if you want to get faster Fred's future goals, including some big races in 2024 A lot of runners strive to get better quickly but Fred shows that you don't need to rush the training process in order to see great results. Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%.
