This week on Dear Runner Bod, I'm sharing a behind-the-scenes update on my training for my upcoming fall half marathon. Spoiler: my body has never been great at heat acclimation—and this training cycle is proving no different. I chat about what it's been like managing hot summer miles, higher heart rates, and hydration struggles, and how I'm adjusting my carb intake and fluid strategy to keep performance on track. If you've ever felt like your body just doesn't cooperate with heat training, this episode will feel very relatable. Save 15% off your MidDay Squares order with this link! Episode 208 transports us to the heart of Amish country as we dive deep into the Bird in Hand Half Marathon weekend. "It's like running through a postcard," our friend, Ryan, commented. From camel selfies to cornfield runs, our special guests Ellie, Carrie, Tracy, and Kim capture the pastoral magic that makes this event unlike any other running experience. You'll feel like you're right alongside them as they describe the horse-drawn buggy pacers, the challenge of the rolling hills, and the remarkable community spirit that draws runners from across the country. And the legendary post-race chicken dinner? Our guests can't stop raving about it—a culinary highlight that rivals the scenic course itself. Before our main feature, we introduce an exciting new collaboration with Hannah from The Start Line Co, who's created a collection of running-themed temporary tattoos specifically for the Rise and Run community. These sweat-resistant designs—including "fueled by plastic cheese" and the Rise and Run logo—add a fun dimension to race day preparation. We also check in on training schedules as Wine and Dine Weekend approaches in just five weeks, with Marathon Weekend following 16 weeks later. The hosts acknowledge this challenging middle point of training where motivation wanes but dedication becomes crucial. As Alysha beautifully expresses in her moving piece "I Am a Runner," this sport connects us through shared experiences and determination despite the challenges. This episode delivers equal parts practical insights and heartwarming community connection. Take a run with The Human Potential Running Series podcast. For Episode 71, HPRS Race Director John Lacroix and co-hosts Thomas Stott and Megan Storms reveal an exciting project spearheaded by Tommy. In this episode, we crack open a big idea: the future Human Potential documentary. Not a highlight reel. Not a brag piece. But a raw, honest exploration of what it really means to show up on trails, in all your humanness, and become something more. John shares the deeper vision behind the project and how it connects to our core belief in Human Potential. They discuss a 10-part docuseries unfolding across the 2026 season, from RegFest to finish lines and the messy middle in between, which has now morphed into a feature film. We talk about the “why” behind it: To show the human side of trail adventures, not just the triumphs To explore what people find out there when they're willing to go all in To give outsiders a real answer to “Why would anyone do this?” To help our own community reflect on what their journey means We're starting to gather footage now, and we're looking for folks in the HPRS community who are willing to be part of it. You don't need to be fast. You don't need to be flashy. We're looking for: Grit Vulnerability People who are willing to go deep And your real, natural self on camera If that sounds like you, or someone you know, reach out. This is a story we're telling together.

Hearing Pip Candrick share her love of trail running, it's hard to believe she only took up the sport in her late 40s after being diagnosed with brain cancer. To regain her health after treatment, Pip joined a gym that challenged her to set a goal. She picked running a Half Marathon which, she says, ‘…was just ridiculous. I don't know why it came out of my mouth'.Pip quickly fell in the love with the sport, and discovered a surprising side effect of her long runs.During a long run one day in preparation for her first Half Marathon, she suddenly had memories (she didn't realise she'd lost) come flooding back. She credits her long runs with ‘restoring her brain'.Since then, Pip's gone on to finish multiple races including the 100km race at Ultra Trail Australia as well as the Husky Long Course triathlon (a Half Ironman/70.3 distance race).Of course, her recovery and life haven't been without challenges.Pip experiences seizures and hasn't (until only recently) been able to head out the door for a run by herself. It's a freedom she desperately misses. And I can't help but think it's something the rest of us - myself included - take for granted.Pip's story reminds me of the importance of not taking life for granted, of trusting your gut instinct and the power of sports as a vehicle for healing (physically, mentally and emotionally).
David Gleeson spent 13 years as a competitive gymnast, reaching level 10—the highest level in the sport—and winning multiple state and regional titles. This summer, he went all in on his first ultramarathon: the Finger Lakes 50K trail race in Hector, NY. Take a run with The Human Potential Running Series podcast. For Episode 69, HPRS Race Director John Lacroix and co-hosts Thomas Stott and Megan Storms discuss the word of doom, "Injuries." Injuries are never on the training plan, but every runner eventually faces them. What matters most is how you respond in the first few minutes, the first few days, and the weeks that follow. In this episode, we walk through the full arc of dealing with an injury, from that initial “uh-oh” moment to your first cautious steps back on the trail. Topics include: Triage on the Spot: How to tell if it's a soft-tissue tweak or a hospital trip. Mindset Matters: Why your brain chemistry shifts in the first five minutes, and how to ground yourself in what to do now. Training Setback → Opportunity: Reframing your outlook, setting up support, and dropping the unnecessary stress of “racing through it.” The Real Return-to-Run Checklist: It's not just about time. We dig into pain-free walking, stairs, range of motion, strength, eccentric control, and even hopping tests before lacing up again. Protocols that Work: Run-walk reintroductions, flat terrain starts, and why consistency still trumps intensity. Plus, surprising strategies like gentle uphills (for everyone except Achilles injuries). The Nintendo Reset Button: Use downtime to build where you've been weak—slower paces, mobility, breathwork, hydration, connective tissue health. Healing on Nature's Timeline: Understanding the cellular phases of repair—inflammatory (days), proliferation (weeks), remodeling (months)—so you can respect the process instead of fighting it. Whether you're sidelined today or just want tools for the future, this episode is a guide to resilience, patience, and coming back stronger.
Carin and her sons have a genetic condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS). A rare condition related to the connective tissue in the body that results in many hospital visits and many stitchers and check-ups for her and her boys. This condition, together with the fact she didn't think she was “allowed to do sports” because she was “bigger than average” as a kid, meant it wasn't until Carin was in her 30s that she signed up for her first 5km fun run, with a secret goal to run the whole distance.Carin credits that race with changing her life and she's since gone on to complete multiple Half Marathons and triathlons.Carin has also shared her story, experience and insights around body image, self-doubt and dealing with critics and online trolls on her blog so I knew she would be perfect for Sparta Chicks Radio.

In this episode, I sit down with the amazing Tara Welling — a former professional runner who raced for Nike and Skechers — to hear her powerful story of grit, growth, and finding joy again in the sport she loves.Tara takes us back to her first miles in elementary school, through her rise to the professional circuit, and into the realities most people never see — the burnout, the pressure, and the struggles with body image that came with competing at the highest level. She shares how stepping away from the sport allowed her to rebuild a healthier relationship with running, one rooted in balance, joy, and self-respect.We also talk about what it's like to run during pregnancy, the transition into motherhood, and how she's now pouring her experience into coaching. Through her work with RunDoyen, Tara helps runners of all abilities tap into personalized training, the right mindset, and the power of community support. This conversation will remind you that running is not just about chasing times — it's about chasing what lights you up inside. Whether you're chasing a PR or simply trying to fall in love with running again, Tara's story will leave you inspired to run your own race.Tara Welling is a former professional runner for Nike and Skechers, a 2x National Champion in the Half Marathon and 15k, and a 4x U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier (2012 – 10k & 5k track, 2016 – 10k & 5k track, 2020 – marathon, 2024 – marathon). Now a coach with RunDoyen and a mom of two, Tara combines her elite-level experience with a personalized, supportive approach to help runners of all levels reach their goals — whether that's chasing a PR, building consistency, or finding joy in the process. If you want to connect with her, you can find her at the links below!tara.erdmann11@gmail.comhttps://www.rundoyen.com/https://www.instagram.com/tara_welling/00:21 Tara's Early Running Journey02:41 Choosing Running Over Soccer05:54 College Running Experience07:11 Body Image and Nutrition in Running12:20 Training and Motherhood19:16 Professional Running Career22:02 Burnout and Rediscovering Joy in Running26:23 Training with Sketchers28:57 Finding Joy in Running29:44 Running During Pregnancy33:23 Balancing Motherhood and Running33:42 Olympic Trials Experience40:34 Coaching Philosophy and Approach43:41 Personalized Training PlansJoin the Real Life Runners Team today! https://www.realliferunners.com/teamJoin the Team! --> https://www.realliferunners.com/team Thanks for Listening!!Be sure to hit FOLLOW on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast player Leave a review on Apple Podcasts. Do you feel like you are doing everything right - like eating very little and exercising - but your weight won't budge? I have been there! I was a runner adding more & more miles to my routine but the scale was going in the wrong direction! It turns out I was likely under-fueled and over-exercising…so my body was stubbornly holding onto fat instead of releasing it to burn for fuel. A marathon is double the distance of a half marathon, but it's not necessarily double the work. In this episode, we talk through just how much harder it is to train for and race a marathon versus a half marathon, and give you tips to get started if you're thinking about making the jump.
I ran a half marathon! I wanted to give some insight on how I trained and prepped for my most recent race, the Nike After Dark Half Marathon! It was an evening race, which isn't the norm, so take that into consideration. I also wanted to take this opportunity to dive into why I am breaking up with distance training and the learning opportunity it presented me with. Podcast Overview: - my training for a half marathon - my nutrition for a half marathon - race day specifics - why I am breaking up with distance training*if I run a race, I will not be training for it! **if I go for a random long run - it will not be because I am prepared for it! Eating healthy doesn't have to be complicated. For the past couple of years, I've kept my diet simple by cycling through almost the same meals every week. In this episode, I break down what I'm eating right now as I train for my Spartan 21k, why this approach keeps me feeling strong and focused, and how keeping it simple has been the key to building consistency without overthinking every bite. For more go to: www.scottmlynch.comLevel up your life by joining my Patreon where you'll get exclusive content every week and more badass offerings (rips t-shirt in half, Hulk Hogan style, and runs around the room).
