In honor of the late Rob Reiner we are looking at The Story of Us, the 74th highest-grossing movie of the year, finishing just ahead of earlier entry Blast from the Past. Opening #2 behind Fight Club on October 15th and going on to gross $59 million worldwide on a $50 million dollar budget. Starring Bruce Willis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Reiner himself, Rita Wilson, Julie Hagerty, Paul Reiser, and Tim Matheson, The Story of Us is one of Reiner's worst-reviewed movies, who, after an unbelievable run of movies in the late 80s and early 90s started running into trouble in the late 90s and early 2000s with the likes of this, Rumor Has It, and the aggressively sentimental and fluffy The Bucket List. Is The Story of Us as bad as critics said? Or does it belong alongside When Harry Met Sally, Reiner's romcom masterpiece that it goes so far out its way to evoke? We welcome Slate's Nitish Pahwa to discuss marriage, casting, bad writing, unnecessary monologues, and the greatness of Rob Reiner. Nitish is on Bluesky @nitishpahwa.com

On this episode of You Are What You Read, we are remembering the great Rob Reiner and his beautiful wife, Michele Singer Reiner. We had the honor of hosting Mr. Reiner on You Are What You Read in October with his memoir, A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever: The Story of Spinal Tap, which he co-wrote with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and David Kamp.  Rob is a two-time Emmy–winning actor for his role in All in the Family. He is also the acclaimed director of This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President, Ghosts of Mississippi, and The Bucket List. When Rob Reiner met Michele Singer on the set of When Harry Met Sally, he changed the ending of the film to the now-iconic conclusion… Michele Singer was a world-renowned photographer, producer and activist. Together, they spearheaded a tobacco tax initiative in California to fund early childhood development and chaired the state commission to oversee its implementation. In 2008, Michele and Rob cofounded The American Foundation For Equal Rights, which paved the way for marriage equality nationwide. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, we welcome back a longtime favorite guest: Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo, a neuropsychiatrist and internationally known educator whose work sits at the intersection of brain science, mental health, and eating disorder treatment. If you've heard his previous episodes, you already know that he has a profound ability to make complex neuroscience feel not just understandable, but actionable. This time, he brings something new, something that might seem unexpected coming from a neuroscientist: the science of a bucket list. And no, not the Hollywood version. Not skydiving. Not "visit Paris." Something far more foundational. Tweetable Quotes "It's okay to be skeptical because that's part of it." - Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo "Recovery kind of involves helping the brain remember how to feel that, that curiosity, pleasure, connection, and flexibility again." - Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo "When you go places, and you meet different people with different cultures, the one thing I have learned… it has helped tolerability." - Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo "We're programmed, and we don't even know we're being programmed to think and, more importantly, to react." - Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo "Your brain is always changing." - Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo Resources Grab my Journal Prompts Here! In the quiet suburbs of Pasadena, California, Jermaine Ee found himself at a crossroads—not his own, but his parents'. As the oldest of four siblings, Jermaine had always admired the grit of his immigrant parents, who in their twenties packed their bags and left their homelands for a new life in Oklahoma of all places. "I don't think I fully appreciated how big of a decision that was until I turned 30 myself," Jermaine reflected during a recent conversation on the Positive Aging Community podcast, hosted by Steve Gurney. "At 30 years old, my parents separately, individually from two different places, decided to pack their bags and move to this country... especially going to a place where nobody looked like them."That sense of bold reinvention would echo through Jermaine's family story, shaping not just their past but their approach to aging, loss, and what comes next. What began as casual chats about retirement evolved into profound trips, heartbreaking realizations, and even a new tech startup aimed at helping others plan their legacies. Jermaine's tale is a raw reminder: Time is finite, dreams are personal, and the best way to honor our loved ones is to listen—really listen—before it's too late.

They open up about aging, retirement, and the unique challenges of long-term planning when you're raising a big family. The conversation flows into decluttering, time-blocking, and why structure with flexibility helps Melessa stay focused on big goals like writing her book. Stephanie encourages her to approach her creative projects the same way she tackles real-life responsibilities—with intention, deadlines, and heart. What if your calendar measured miles, not meetings? Today, I share why I walked away from a globe‑spanning tech role at 63 and how a simple question—how many rides are left—reshaped everything from morning routines to long‑range routes. The story starts with a box of old home videos, a flood of perspective, and a quiet realization that freedom only counts if your body and mind can enjoy it.We dive into the nuts and bolts of protecting time on two wheels: the health habits that keep you riding longer, the mindset shift from scarcity to intention, and a planning method that turns “someday” into scheduled miles. Ron breaks down how he and his wife prepared for retirement, what business travel took out of him, and what opens up when you swap quarterly reviews for weather windows and mountain passes. Expect practical details—strength and mobility that matter for control and endurance, mental practices that sharpen attention, and a budget‑first approach to dream routes. You'll hear a clear, humane framework: take five seconds to estimate your remaining years, then spend the next weeks mapping rides that match your season of life. Prioritize people and places that carry meaning. Translate wishes into dates, routes, and resources. And hold room for joy, kindness, and the courage to go when the weather is “good enough.” If you've ever wondered how to turn a love of motorcycles into a life you can actually live, this is your sign to plan it—and to ride it.If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a rider who needs a nudge, and leave a quick review to help others find Peace Love Moto. Send us a textA teenager sent to rehab without ever touching drugs. A yellow‑Formica childhood stitched with bullying and bravado. A school shooting buried by a bigger headline. Jessica Danel's story doesn't ask for sympathy—it demands your attention and rewards it with candor, humor, and hard‑won wisdom. We sit down with Jessica to unpack the heartbeat behind her memoir, Bucket List from a Redneck Girl, and the Just Saying podcast she launched to give other moms a place to breathe.Jessica walks us through the chapters that shaped her: Park Circle friendships and Catholic school scars, an El Camino first love on her terms, and a wedding day so chaotic she calls it “Jerry Springer.” She shares how she built a 208‑child preschool from her living room—then watched the 2008 crash squeeze the life out of a thriving business while her newborn needed open‑heart surgery. The conversation turns deeply personal as she details her daughter's ongoing medical journey, a later genetic answer—16p11.2 duplication—that reframed years of questions, and the daily realities of autism, speech delays, and sensory‑driven anxiety. We talk inclusion that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, the steep jump from elementary to high school supports, and the small, stubborn wins that keep families going.Through it all, Jessica's voice stays warm and grounded. She owns her mistakes, explains how reconciling with her mom reshaped old narratives, and offers clear advice on marriage (be friends, share goals, compromise) and advocacy (document, ask, try again tomorrow). If you've ever felt misread by the systems meant to help, this conversation will feel like a hand on your shoulder.
