Hey thanks for becoming a listener!
Derek Lamont (@LegendOfSteele)
Unfinished but needed to go up. Started off with another beautiful morning with Carter and got a chance to jump into a discussion where a good friend of mine was talking about Courage. Listen in. I hope it adds value!
It’s a Monday morning after a Food For Thought Produce Pick Up, which means we have a lot of compost to make. I got to get out there with the team, chat with Ms. Raynice, heard about her daughter Hailey getting ready for college and offered some advice and help. Got to also chat with the team about some funny stuff and then a conversation about how many chuggas you say before choo choo! Lol that was funny. All in all, another #Legendary day! Listen in and enjoy! ✊
Today was all about self care + family. On the weekends Nicole and I do our best to just spend our time with the girls and enjoy some type of outing. That included going to hear Nicole speak at the Food Leaders Lab Culmination, going on a walk to the store with the girls, and even a quick trip to Wholefoods. Never takes much!
What a way to open up season 2. Got a chance to take a writer from Kaiser Health on a tour of the food landscape of Inglewood and South LA. Shared some facts about the built environment but also got the chance to showcase some amazing stories of businesses looking to transform their communities. Also some really awesome music from various new musical artists. So glad to be back. Listen and if you are so inclined feel free to share! #LiveLegendary
Here's the first episode of a new segment I'd like to call #CarterTalks.
On this episode of #LiveLegendary podcast I had the opportunity to be a guest on the #ChangingTheNarrative podcast segment led by Paul Terry talking about Mental Health in communities of color, particularly the black community. "Changing the Narrative" is a collaboration of Connectopod and SJLI funded by a grant from The California Arts Council. #ArtsCA It's not often that I get to share a platform with my man David Turner, one of the most brilliant minds today when it comes to the issues in the black community. When I’m in spaces with this guy, I'm learning more about myself and connect more dots about things I know. Of course, I was so focused that I didn't capture it from the beginning, but I did get a good amount of it, enough of it to share with my friends and family out there listening in. (My bad!
So I hit up Leda Kay to see if she saw Netflix's "Seven Seconds", a single season 12 episode drama, probably one of the best I've seen on Netflix. This show tells a really dense story about the black experience with the law enforcement and judicial systems, how justice is never received even if law enforcement is in the wrong. The story, plot and character development was really dope and all too real. Leda and I did our best to capture it all in one episode but honestly I'm sure we didn't do the show its full justice. Tell you what, listen in, then call in and give us your two cents on what we captured, what you think we missed and I'm going to pick the best commentary to be on the next episode about this show that we will do that will pick up all the pieces we missed. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Just filled with gratitude. Thank you to everyone who sent love my way today, especially my wife and daughters.
So Netflix finally gave us season 2 of "Dear White People" and I couldn't wait to watch it. In fact, we finished the entire season in two evenings. Lol But Leda and Mike took FOREVER! Lol Nonetheless, since we both watched it as a couple, we figured this episode we'd feature Mike and Nicole as guests. We got the chance to talk a lot about the themes of the season as well as the characters. We even got a little deep about white friends and our feelings about hoteps!
So I had the opportunity to participate in a bipartisan workshop called Better Angels, that had the goal of bringing reds and blues together to try and find common ground. I have to be honest, I didn’t know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. This episode is HELLA LONG but I thought it was really important for my friends on both sides of the aisle to hear how we got to a point to understanding each other. If you happen to listen through it all or even some of it, let me know what you think. What questions come to mind? Did you hear something that made you anxious and frustrated? Let’s talk about it!
So Leda Kay hit me up and asked if I saw Netflix’s the Rachel Divide, the documentary about Rachel Dolezal, the white woman who believes she “identifies” as a black woman. The documentary picks up 2 years after the whole thing became national news. I didn’t see it but we had a special guest on, My beautiful wife Nicole who actually did see the documentary. Listen in as we dive in to the documentary and even some other social issues that it brings up.
Had a great water cooler conversation with my folks at work about J. Coles's K.O.D.. This was definitrly fun. There were a lot of opinions that were very valid, and I think it could add some value to your listening experience. Let me know what you think. Call in!
On this episode we talked about the magnificent 7 year run of “Scandal” that came to an end this past Thursday. Leda and I finally both saw it and it was time to talk about it. We couldn’t talk about the end of this era without my mom, who’s been the most faithful, never missing a Shondaland TGIT! So yea, introducing Mama Steele to the Podcast! Listen in and feel free to call in, we’d love to get your vibes too!
“Yooo!!!! Did You See... ?” is a new podcast segment where my sister Leda Kay and I review different television episodes and movies that we both saw recently. There’s this idea out there that if you’re trying to build a business or level up in life, that watching television and movies are a waste of time. Here’s a fun fact... entrepreneurs watch TV too.
Had the chance this evening to attend Liberty Hill's Upton Sinclair Awards Dinner. It was amazing event, lots of prople there. It was really dope to hear from the folks doing the work on the ground, organizing, empowering people. The highlight of the evening though was hearing the speech and call to action from the Upton Sinclair Awardee, Congressman John Lewis. I was able to capture a part of what he said and how he encouraged us to "get in the way." Take a listen in. It's my hope for you to be moved and become a change agent in your community like I was. To know the history and story is one thing. Its whole other experience hearing it in person.✊
A beautiful morning in Temecula, CA #StaffRetreat
In my role as the Health Equity Programs Director at SJLI, I’ve had the privilege to speak in front of different groups of people to talk about the work we do in the community. This is the first time getting the chance to talk about health equity at a hospital and my audience was a a group of about 30 doctors. I was able to capture to talk to share with you. It went really well. My goal was to leave an impression on them and based on the response afterwards I think I achieved that goal. Let me know what you think. Thanks for listening.

I had the honor of being interviewed by my guy Aaron Baptiste. He was doing a project for class on Leadership and he thought of me to be interviewed. So when I say honor, I definitely mean that. To me, it's very humbling when someone comes and makes a request about a subject like leadership. It says so much about how they feel about you. So Aaron, if you happen to listen to this, thank you so much for thinking of me when this came across your plate. Hope you enjoy my point of view on this. Let me know what you think.
I got stuck in LA trafffic, a rare occurance, and I got a chance to think about why I am capturing my story and how I can do better. Part of that is creating thriving Mondays and I took the time to share why doing that is so crucial.
An amazing week of social justice work in the community - heres a quick recap of March 12th-16th • A piece of the Housing Rights Rountable Panel hosted by Liberty Hill that i had the pleasure to participate in.
Just getting back into the flow of things, I’m excited to re-introduce my day-in-the-life series called “LegendOfSteele.” I’ve been really introspective lately and I think there was some golden info that came out of that. Let me know what you think! Thanks for listening. #LiveLegendary
I had an emotion moment this morning. It all started because I realized that I hate being hungry. (#HealthJourneyWoes

Nicole, my wife, is an entrepreneur and hasn’t told people about it. Finally got her to drop the science behind the brand. The why definitely took me back down memory lane during my youth! I’m a fan of the brand and not because she’s my wife!
Leda Kay from LedaKay.com joined me for a discussion about the why’s and how’s behind our efforts to provide content to the world. Legendofsteele.com is days away from being launched and I was having some anxiety. I love talking with her. This convo was insightful, funny, introspective... This conversation not only helped me calm down and get focused, but we came up with some really great ideas and mindsets to take our content to the next level while adding even more value to peoples lives in the process. Feel free to listen in. #LiveLegendary
I love food! GOOD food. But I know that love is killing me. I’m just being honest about how I feel about food, how I got to this point, why it’s hard for me to change, but the accountability I have around me to make that change. Listen in!
#WealthTalk It’s really important to know that Health is Wealth #MajorKey
#MorningMindset Get Up & Try Again So when I was growing up in the my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, there were a lot of people who had influence on me who had so much impact that I use the knowledge they shared with me to this day. One of them was my neighbor back in my days running in the Manchester streets on the Northside of the city. Her name was Ms. Les. Everyday except in the cold winters, she would be standing at the balcony of her porch pretty much all day, watching the block, chatting with friends and laughing at the children, me the most. I was always falling! New rollerblades, new skate board, climbing the tree out front my house, jumping the bannister on my porch...occasionally falling while doing any of those things. She’d always say though, “Get up and Try again!” A lesson that stuck with me all my life. Listen in and enjoy!
#MorningMindset Always Move With Love. After talking with Avery this morning, I felt this one was worth sharing. Listen in and enjoy!
#MorningMindset Stay Grounded. Stay Focused. Be Driven. 3 easy things to say that are so crucial to when it comes to the ability to live legendary. When we are striving for greatness, it’s easy to stop off in the middle and get comfortable in the middle ground of our journey to success. We have to create tools to overcome that obstacle. Listen in and enjoy...
#MorningMindset Be Intentional in Life Today Today, let’s be intentional. Let’s be very deliberate and on purpose in all the moves we make. There is so much power in intentionality. It takes a level of presence and being in the moment and might be difficult at first. With this practice, the long term benefits definitely outweighs the short term difficulties. Listen in...
Morning Mindset Health is Wealth. We have to really take our health into serious account. All in all, every day we fall short of having our optimum health is a day we put the opportunity to live life to its fullest potential in jeopardy. Today’s mindset is acknowledging this and making sure we self assess and get active in our mental, spiritual and physical health. When we do, wealth is waiting for us on the other side.
#MorningMindset: Vision is required. We can make moves all we want. We can do all the talking we want. If we don’t have vision, we have no purpose. It has to be clear, so clear you can feel its presence. If you want growth, vision Is required. *Today, December 6, 2017 would have been my sister Julnee’s 32nd birthday. I miss you Jules. I love you. I promise the visions we talking about, ima do everything I can to make sure they all happen.
#MorningMindset: We Are the Authors of Our Life Story
I decided to get a few things off my chest today. Starting from a place where I’m required to learn so much while also needing to DO even more to have significant progress in this one life I have to live, working to #LevelUp just feels so hard to do! I know the purpose I feel I have right now in this world... and documenting/sharing this process is for others to use my process as a tool for themselves... but the barriers in front of me that keep me from doing that sometimes can just be a bit overwhelming. I wonder where are you in your #LevelUp Process?
#MorningMindset: Action Cures Everything In order to overcome the vicious cycle that comes with inaction... • The overthinking • The doubt • The excuses You have to switch your mindset and start moving. Simply put... Action. Cures. Everything. I had a few call-ins that had some really pointed things to add and the last from Debbie Shaw from the Artist Hustle gave me a chance to share a bonus personal manifesto about the lens I view the world through. Thanks for the call in Rueben! That 1 minute spoke volumes.
#WealthTalk: I had the privilege of having a really dope conversation with one of my young co-workers who sought me out for insight. Ultimately, he wanted to get my thoughts on how to get autonomy, make more impact with his team while also make more funds to start changing the financial outcome of his family. After listening to his story to audit his situation, I realized this is something many of us strive to achieve. I think my advice was solid (nothing but #Majorkeys
I’m an advocate for love, it sounds cliche but I want to spread more love in this world. Living Legendary in Love starts w/ love of self, then authentically giving love. Then, life begins to open up.
The purpose of why I do the #LiveLegendary podcast has already been set from the beginning but now it’s time to get even more intentional about it. So we’ve been working on that. Legendofsteele.com
I teach what I learn to the people I care about the most. Keeps me sharp. When they know what I know, they hold me accountable. Self Awareness is major to that. Listen to how it shows up for Michelle.
Operators are just as important Entrepreneurs. Without operators to carry it through, the vision of a visionary often stays dormant. So if you're an operator/employee, this is for you.
(09.07) Got back to business. Great morning with my girls. Incredible meetings. Honest talk about the Inglewood Farmers Market. Talking with lil Buddha about her day and an audio Letter To My girls.
(09.06) I'm seeking INCREASE but lately I've felt like I'm running in place. Today, with a full moon and Mercury leaving retrograde, I worked through that rut. This is a defining moment.
