Colonel, three-time Bronze Star recipient, and founder of SOF Missions, a nonprofit fighting the veteran suicide epidemic killing 20+ Americans a day.   From juvenile delinquent in South LA to elite special warfare officer with four combat deployments, Dr. Friedman breaks down why comfort is a disease, the one character trait that kills more companies than bad strategy, and the leadership lessons most CEOs will never learn unless they've operated where failure means death — not a bad quarter.   Twenty veterans will take their lives today. Dr. Friedman has made it his mission to stop that — and this conversation is part of how. Buy the book, share the episode, support the mission.

In this powerful episode, hosts Steve and Ken Roybal sit down with Andrew Gonzalez, a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) who spent the majority of his career working the intense 77th Street Division and specialized gang units. Andrew pulls back the curtain on the evolution of modern street gangs, revealing how social media and encrypted applications have shifted criminal enterprises into highly sophisticated, clandestine corporate-style structures. He drops hard-hitting truths about the daily realities of policing in South Central, what it feels like to face a loaded gun in a split-second shootout, and the harrowing side of responding to violent crime scenes. Beyond the tactical talk, this interview explores the heavy mental health toll of law enforcement. Andrew opens up about his personal battles with PTSD, depression, and human suffering, sparking an important conversation with Ken (himself a retired LAPD veteran) on the critical importance of modern police resiliency programs, mental health resources, and catching trauma before it overflows. Tune in to hear an authentic, raw perspective on the human being behind the badge, the undeniable power of a strong family unit, and how Andrew is now giving back through his first-responder business, Battle Cry Gear. He is a housing justice advocate who has been a community organizer since he was a kid – and now he is running for Los Angeles City Council. I talk with Estuardo Mazariegos, candidate for Council District 9 in the City of Los Angeles, on this episode of WNLA.Today is the second installment of our series of interviews with candidates running to succeed Curren Price on the LA City Council. The 9th Council District in Los Angeles stretches from the southern edge of Downtown Los Angeles, through South Central, all the way toward Watts. The communities of Central-Alameda, Vernon-Central, South Park, Green Meadows, and Vermont Square all call District 9 home. The district is among the most diverse and youngest in the city, with over three-quarters of residents identifying as Latino, a significant Black community, and many families with roots across Latin America and beyond. Nearly 40% of District 9 residents live below the federal poverty line, making it the city's poorest council district, and many households face challenges of housing insecurity, limited access to good jobs, and environmental burdens. With Price completing his third and final term, the seat is open for the first time since 2013. The primary election will take place on June 2, 2026, and the runoff, if needed, will be in November. This year, the field features community leaders, non-profit executives, and policy advocates all vying for votes. The candidates include Jose Ugarte, Estuardo Mazariegos, Elmer Roldan, and several others—each bringing their own vision for the future of South LA.Today's guest is Estuardo Mazariegos. He is the Los Angeles co-director of ACCE, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, a grassroots organization working to organize and fight for  California's traditionally underserved residents, including communities of color, low-income and working families, and the undocumented population.Estuardo is a an immigrant from Guatemala who was carried across the Rio Grande as a child by his mother. As you'll hear in the interview, he says he learned to be a community organizer as a young child and has never stopped being one. He is known for his leadership in housing justice initiatives and organizing efforts, working with ACCE and other grassroots groups to address local community issues and advocate for social changehttps://www.estuardo4la.com/Nov 5 - Elmer RoldanNov 12 - Estuardo MazariegosNov 19 - Jose UgarteWhat's Next, Los Angeles? is produced and hosted by Mike Bonin, in partnership with LA Forward.

The district is among the most diverse and youngest in the city, with over three-quarters of residents identifying as Latino, a significant Black community, and many families with roots across Latin America and beyond. Nearly 40% of District 9 residents live below the federal poverty line, making it the city's poorest council district, and many households face challenges of housing insecurity, limited access to good jobs, and environmental burdens.Currently, District 9 is represented by Councilmember Curren Price, who has held the seat since 2013. With Price's tenure ending, this year's open-seat race has drawn intense interest. The primary election will take place on June 2, 2026, and the runoff, if needed, will be in November. This year, the field features community leaders, non-profit executives, and policy advocates all vying for votes. The candidates include Jose Ugarte, Estuardo Mazariegos, Elmer Roldan, and several others—each bringing their own vision for the future of South LA.Today's guest is Elmer Roldan, a well-known education advocate whose work has focused on youth opportunity and social equity in Los Angeles. Elmer currently runs Communities In Schools of Los Angeles, has worked for LAUSD, and spent nearly two decades working for Community Coalition. We sat down recently for an in-depth conversation about who he is, what his ties are to the district, and what his agenda and vision are for the district and for Los Angeles.https://www.elmerroldan.com/Nov 5 - Elmer RoldanNov 12 - Estuardo MazariegosNov 19 - Jose UgarteWhat's Next, Los Angeles? is produced and hosted by Mike Bonin, in partnership with LA Forward.

Here's what's broken: Jared can work 60 hours a week, but he's not playing basketball with anyone. And basketball matters in South LA.This conversation gets practical fast. We dig into why community is the thing that actually makes churches grow—not better preaching, not cooler programs, but people doing life together. Why serving coffee after church was once considered radical. How asking three simple questions in a small group changes everything. And why the horizontal relationships in your church matter more than you think. We talk about the difference between being busy and being efficient. Between filling your calendar with church stuff and spending time with people who might become the next generation of leaders. Jared's wrestling with how to build real friendships at scale when his church has pockets of community but not enough. There's a reason people leave through the back door. Usually it's not the sermon. It's that they never connected with anyone.

It began with Chef Steve and his daughter Gabby cooking healthy meals together and sharing the benefits of nutritious eating, fitness, dance, and active lifestyles throughout their community, starting when Gabby was a young child.By 2006, Cooking With Gabby had formalized its mission: to reduce health disparities in low-income communities, where issues like obesity, diabetes, and poor nutrition are prevalent. Instead, he's in South LA, running between two locations, investing in young men who sometimes disappoint him, and figuring out how to build something that lasts. We talk about his journey from basketball dreams and aviation to that moment in his car when God's presence overwhelmed him. How nine people got baptized in his living room the first month. Why he took on a second church in Pasadena when his heart was already in South LA. In this episode of Vineyard Underground, Fritz welcomes Adam Huss — host of the Beyond Organic Wine podcast, winemaker at Centralas Wine, and creator of the Crenshaw Cru Wine Garden in South Los Angeles. Adam shares his unconventional path into winemaking, beginning with a career in the nonprofit sector before launching a winery focused on ecological and community-driven practices. The conversation explores Adam's philosophy of going “beyond organic” to embrace an ecological approach to winegrowing — one that avoids getting boxed into industry buzzwords and instead focuses on the interconnectedness of soil, plants, people, and place. He discusses his work with regenerative agriculture pioneer Kelly Mulville at Paicines Ranch, his shift toward sourcing local fruit (including prickly pears and other native plants), and his experimentation with vitiforestry — a centuries-old practice of integrating grapevines with trees to create resilient, biodiverse systems. Adam also explains how transparency in winemaking, creative use of wild or locally abundant ingredients, and community involvement shape his vision for wine that is both place-specific and environmentally sound. Listeners will hear stories from his LA-based wine garden, lessons from crop failures, and his plans for a vitiforestry project in New York that could produce wines unlike anything on the market. Whether you grow grapes conventionally, organically, or somewhere in between, Adam's journey offers a fresh perspective on how to balance environmental stewardship, economic sustainability, and community engagement in vineyard operations. In this episode, you will hear: How “beyond organic” focuses on ecological connections rather than labels Lessons from Paicines Ranch on listening to the land before planting The concept and practice of vitiforestry, from hedgerows to “married vines” Creative use of local and wild ingredients in winemaking The role of community in sustainable agriculture and wine culture Follow and Review: If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to follow the podcast and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts!
