Stijn Schmitz welcomes back John Feneck to the show. John Feneck is the CEO of Feneck Consulting Group. The discussion opens with the critical tungsten supply crunch, where China's recent export restrictions, including cutting off Japan, highlight a severe imbalance. John notes that the U.S. has not produced tungsten since 2015, while 85% of global supply comes from China, Russia, and North Korea, posing risks for defense and technology. He sees potential in advanced North American projects, and mentions growing U.S. government interest in securing domestic production. On precious metals, he views the recent sharp correction in silver and gold as a medium-term buying opportunity, with silver likely to hold around $50 after its parabolic rise, and gold's long-term bullish case supported by large bank price targets despite near-term rate-hike uncertainties. He favors producers Silverco and Americas Gold and Silver for their strong plans and management conviction. Turning to copper, near all-time highs, John highlights the supply constraints from long permitting timelines and names Power Metallic, backed by 17 billionaires and exceptional drill results, and PTX Metals, which offers low-cost copper with a pending uranium spin-off. In critical minerals, he mentions Esport Critical for its rare earths, uranium, and copper assets, and First Tolerium for its innovative thermoelectric technology with potential defense and drone applications, showcased at the upcoming DARPA competition. John concludes by describing Feneck Consulting Group's decade-long track record of providing actionable insights, real-time email updates, and investor conferences, emphasizing the value of independent, non-herd thinking in resource investing. He's delivered over 250 client seminars and webinars, spoken at 12 global commodities events, and in 2017 joined Sprott's precious metals portfolio-management team. Have you ever bought something because it was "almost sold out" or because a sale was ending at midnight? If so, you're not alone. Scarcity is one of the most powerful forces influencing human behavior. When something becomes difficult to get, we often value it more—even if we weren't interested in it before. Marketers know this. That's why you'll see messages like "Only 3 left in stock," "Limited-time offer," or "Sale ends tonight." Sometimes those claims reflect genuine scarcity. Other times, they are carefully designed to create urgency and push you toward a decision. In this episode, we explore why scarcity is so effective, how it taps into fundamental human psychology, and the many ways businesses use it to influence what you buy. Joining me is Mindy Weinstein, a marketing instructor at Grand Canyon University and the University of Denver, as well as a program leader for The Wharton School and Columbia Business School. She is also author of the book The Power of Scarcity: Leveraging Urgency and Demand to Influence Customer Decisions (https://amzn.to/3QizF3u). What you'll discover: Why scarce products and opportunities instantly become more attractive. The difference between real scarcity and manufactured scarcity. How fear of missing out (FOMO) drives purchasing decisions. Why limited choices can sometimes make people more likely to act. Practical ways to recognize and resist scarcity-based manipulation. The Game of 10: Silence Your Ego & Unlock Your True Potential | Steve Barton | Undiscovered Entrepreneur Episode Summary: What if the only thing standing between you and the business you want is the story your ego keeps telling you? “Someone in your office is stealing from you. They may not be stealing money and putting it into their own pocket, but they’re stealing time. They’re giving away work for free.” – RJon Robins, author of Profit First for Lawyers Many law firm owners focus on generating new business, increasing billable hours, and growing revenue. But bringing business into the firm is only part of what makes a law firm profitable. Have the Hard Conversations In this episode, Jose Luis Perdomo, Fractional CFO at How To Manage a Small Law Firm, discusses one of the most common threats to profitability: unpaid invoices and growing accounts receivable balances. Drawing from a Chapter 14 clip by RJon Robins from Profit First for Lawyers, Jose Luis explores why outstanding balances create more than a cash flow problem. They impact: Attorney and staff accountability Client expectations The long-term financial health of the firm And because collections conversations can feel uncomfortable, overdue balances are often allowed to linger while additional work continues to be performed. But every unpaid invoice that lingers as an accounts receivable balance represents labor, overhead, and resources that have already been invested. A best practice is to develop healthy collections practices long before an invoice becomes overdue. When collections become an afterthought, profitability suffers. Creating a Healthy Sustainable Business Every unpaid invoice tells a story. Often, that story begins long before work begins. Clear communication, well-defined expectations, replenishment policies, and accountability systems all play a role in the final outcome. The goal is not simply to collect money that is already owed. #959 Ever wondered how a high school side hustle could turn into a six-figure business acquisition? In this episode, host Kirsten Tyrrel talks with Joseph Lambert, founder of a junk removal company he started at just 17 that grew fast enough to sell to a private equity firm. Joseph shares how he scaled from mowing lawns to managing a 30-person team, what it was like selling the business while still in his early twenties, and the lessons he's learned about leadership, pricing, and purpose along the way. His story proves that grit, integrity, and simple execution can lead to extraordinary success — even in the unglamorous world of trash! (Original Air Date - 10/23/25) What we discuss with Joseph: + Starting a junk removal company at 17 + Turning early jobs into an entrepreneurial mindset + Building a team and scaling operations + Selling to a private equity group + Leading with integrity and mentorship + Hiring strategies that attract great talent + Marketing that actually works in local service businesses + The balance between data and instinct in decision-making + Lessons learned from running — and selling — a business before 25 Thank you, Joseph! Does Hollywood have a problem with censorship? What's the best post-pandemic movie? Is Andy Burnham, Britain's next potential Prime Minister, actually cool? Amazon MGM Studios has dropped their upcoming Luca Guadagnino film 'Artificial', with some speculating it's because the movie features an unflattering portrayal of OpenAI founder Sam Altman. Andy Burnham is in (maybe). Richard discusses the former Manchester Mayor's 'indie-kid' credentials with a rifle through his record collection. On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Yum! Brands' sale of Pizza Hut, Jersey Mike's overtaking of Chick-fil-A in a major consumer sentiment study, and KFC's announcement that it was entering a new chapter for growth. First up is Pizza Hut, which was officially sold by Yum! Brands in two transactions totaling $2.7 billion. Sam and Alicia discuss the potential future of the brand, and particularly its U.S. business, which was acquired by relatively new private equity firm LongRange Capital. Can Pizza Hut reclaim the loyalty of fans who are nostalgic for its Classic model? Next up they talk about the most recent American Consumer Satisfaction Index, in which Jersey Mike's came out on top — after 11 years of Chick-fil-A taking the crown. Should Chick-fil-A be worried? Sam and Alicia break down the study and why the data matters (to a point). They then transition to KFC, which announced a new “chapter” in which the company would focus on menu innovation, refreshed branding, and modernized stores. Alicia breaks down all the components of this new chapter, and she and Sam talk about how KFC is well positioned to learn from its global stores here in the U.S. They shift their attention to the increase in store closures — On the Border, for example, is now down to only 6 units — before closing with a Quick Fire round in which they cover Panera Bread's new bowls and McDonald's (brief) reintroduction of its beloved Apple Pie. CUJO is a podcast about culture in the age of platforms, from Emilie Friedlander and Andrea Domanick. You can learn more about it here. For fans of independent music, the Geese psyop allegations earlier this year raised an anxiety-provoking question: How much of our taste is our own, and how much of it is just a function of the music industry using a range of tactics (from the mundane, to the shadowy, to the straight-up fraudulent) to manufacture consent? We held back from commenting on the story at the time because we were cooking up a longer response that we finally unveiled this week: a deeply researched, centuries-spanning history of the art and science of musical taste manipulation, spanning Tin Pan Alley sheet music scams, chart manipulation, streaming farms, the modern clipping economy, viral “trend simulation,” and more. Our hope was that shedding light on these historical persuasion tactics — and the psychological mechanisms that underpin them, from the mere-exposure effect to René Girard's mimetic theory of desire — would help our listeners make sense of a present where it can feel like everything on the internet is fake. The episode, titled “Free Clout for Sale,” is part of an exciting collaborative podcast project called Tranche that came out this week on Metalabel. Tranche is the brainchild of friend of the pod and Nothing But Respect cohost Harry Krinsky, who you may remember from our episode on the psychology of the modern Knick fan a few weeks back. As Harry describes it, it's basically a literary magazine, but instead of articles, you get podcast episodes. Listen to today's episode for an interview with Harry about the project and an excerpt from our contribution to it — and please consider supporting our work by purchasing Tranche 001, which gets you five episodes for just $5. Other entries include a history of the word “based” (from Naomi Zeichner and Eamon Whalen), a meditation on Eddington and the fate of the Western in the 2020s (with Nate Fisher and Eddie Averill), an aesthetic analysis of Praxis and the Palantir chore coat (featuring past CUJO guest Sam Venis), and a cross-generational analysis of major life milestones with CUJO regular Ben Dietz and friends. All proceeds will be split among contributors. Something we loved this week: This fascinating episode by the excellent podcast No Such Thing on the history of different corporate management styles and the problem of micromanaging at work, featuring The Drift editor and Harvard historian Erik Baker, author of the book Make Your Own Job: How the Entrepreneurial Work Ethic Exhausted America. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit theculturejournalist.substack.com/subscribe
This week, author and historian Dr. Kate Lister joins Jann, Caitlin & Sarah to discuss feminist history and the often overlooked narratives surrounding women's sexuality and pleasure. The discussion delves into the societal constructs of virginity, the importance of communication in sexual relationships, and the challenges women face in advocating for their own pleasure. Together, the conversation highlights the need for a shift in understanding women's sexual experiences and the importance of dismantling harmful myths surrounding female sexuality. They also touch on the idea of marriage for economic necessity and the modern implications of sex work, particularly in the context of modern platforms like OnlyFans. In this quarterly industry roundtable, Eric Malzone, Juliet Starrett, and Alex Alimanestianu dive deep into the fitness sector's biggest earnings reports and emerging trends. Lifetime Fitness continues its premium brand strategy with impressive revenue growth while strategically shedding lower-tier memberships, but Planet Fitness faces headwinds with declining membership growth and a paused price increase. The team dissects Xponential's mounting troubles as the company burns through cash amid a New York AG settlement, while Garmin's fitness segment absolutely crushes it with 42% revenue growth. CrossFit's future looks brighter with Bruce Edwards returning as CEO—an affiliate owner who actually understands the community. The conversation heats up around retatrutide's bariatric-level weight loss outcomes and what GLP-1s mean for the fitness industry's identity, plus Peter Attia's meta-analysis proving two weekly resistance training sessions deliver 77% of maximal gains. From Peloton's Pilates pivot to Aescape's robotic massage collapse, this episode covers the strategic shifts, financial realities, and cultural transformations reshaping fitness in 2026.
We're coming off of our Summer Game Fest-related high, toting a bunch of news from publisher-driven events that occurred after we published our last episode. For starters, the Xbox Showcase... showcased... 28 games in total, of which 24 are coming to PlayStation 5, including State of Decay 3, Senua, and Spyro: A Realm Beyond (not to mention release dates for Halo: Combat Evolved and Fable). But Xbox's peculiar, wishy-washy, and inconsistent behavior likewise makes us wonder what the future might hold for Microsoft releases on Sony's hardware, especially because Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution -- both internally slated to migrate to PlayStation 5 until very recently -- won't appear at all. Meanwhile, Nintendo's newest Direct also had some interesting fodder, including a surprise look at Kingdom Hearts IV, a brand new 2D-HD game in the form of Final Fantasy Resonance, and more. Other news this week revolves around Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6, a new Crazy Taxi adventure in the form of World Tour, a promising magic shooter called Magicians: The Devil's Deal, a fall release date for Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, and extremely strong sales figures for Yacht Club's Mina the Hollower. We wrap things up (as always) with listener inquiries! Now that everything has settled, what are our three most-anticipated games, respectively? Should Sony bite the bullet and greenlight Destiny 3? Where's Naughty Dog hiding? Is Colin falling prey to Big Plumber and Big Sewer propaganda by refusing to flush wipes?
