fWotD Episode 2880: Gertie the Dinosaur Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 24 March 2025 is Gertie the Dinosaur.Gertie the Dinosaur is a 1914 animated short film by American cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay. It is the first animated film to feature a dinosaur. McCay initially presented the film before live audiences as an interactive part of his vaudeville act; the frisky, childlike Gertie performed tricks at her master's command. McCay's employer William Randolph Hearst curtailed his vaudeville activities, prompting McCay to add a live-action introductory sequence to the film for its theatrical release, which was renamed Winsor McCay, the Famous Cartoonist, and Gertie. McCay abandoned a sequel, Gertie on Tour (c. 1921), after producing about a minute of footage.Although Gertie is popularly thought to be the earliest animated film, McCay had previously made Little Nemo (1911) and How a Mosquito Operates (1912). The American J. Stuart Blackton and the French Émile Cohl had experimented with animation even earlier. Gertie being a character with an appealing personality distinguished McCay's film from these earlier "trick films". Gertie was the first film to employ several animation techniques, like keyframes, registration marks, tracing paper, the Mutoscope action viewer, and animation loops. It influenced the next generation of animators, including the Fleischer brothers, Otto Messmer, Paul Terry, Walter Lantz, and Walt Disney. John Randolph Bray unsuccessfully tried to patent many of McCay's animation techniques and is said to have been behind a plagiarized version of Gertie that appeared a year or two after the original. Gertie is the best preserved of McCay's films—some of which have been lost or survive only in fragments—and has been preserved in the U. S. Library of Congress' National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" since 1991.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:47 UTC on Monday, 24 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Gertie the Dinosaur on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Olivia.

We love spicy food here at “Something Offbeat”. Sometimes, when the heat is intense, things can get scary. In one case, a spicy chip social media challenge has even been linked to the death of a teen. This week, we talked with Dr. Paul Terry, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine. He helped us explore the risks and benefits of eating food with lots of spice.

As this podcast is released, news broke that the SAG-AFTRA strike was over. A tentative agreement was reached on Wednesday, November 8th, and already Hollywood projects (including superhero ones) are being immediately restarted. The State of Marvel Studios is in flux. Recently reports that a summit meeting of Marvel executives took place where they discussed many challenges the studio faces. One is the saga of Jonathan Majors, who is charged with domestic abuse. Majors plays Kang the Conqueror, aka He Who Remains. Do they recast? Or, does the MCU pivot away from Kang altogether, and introduce another big bad? Other rumors surfaced that Marvel is considering bringing back the original Avengers, using the multiverse as a plot device. Author and reporter Tara Bennett rejoins the podcast for Part 2 of this Marvel discussion. In 2021, she and co-author Paul Terry released “The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” For this book, she and Terry were embedded in the Marvel Studios' offices and had unmitigated access. Bennett currently writes for Sci-Fi Wire, IGN, Paste, SFX Magazine, and others. She has written 32 books. In addition to the breaking news covered in this episode, Bennett also discusses the culmination of the MCU's success, Infinity War & Endgame. She also addresses the use of Spider-Man in the MCU.
This month on the podcast (November '23) is concentrated on Marvel, namely the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU has been a centerpiece of superhero pop culture since Iron Man debuted in 2008. Recent reports have suggested the Marvel is in a slump, and there is something called superhero fatigue. Still, Marvel's history has had its share of ups and downs. To understand where Marvel is going, it's key to understand where it's been. Tara Bennett is an author and reporter. At the time of this episode's release, she has written 32 books. In this episode, Bennett discusses how Marvels growth prohibits the studio from doing a better job of connecting their storylines, and how the company is spread thin. Topics include the controversies surrounding The Incredible Hulk in 2009, the purchase of Marvel by Disney, and the death of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. This is part 1 of a 2-part discussion on the current state of the MCU. Get “The Story of Marvel Studios” here: https://a.co/d/0xmDx4X.

Mindful Leadership and The Global Sales Leader hosted By - Jasoncooper.io Sales Training Coach
Welcome to The Global Sales Leader Podcast with your host Jason Cooper, where we bring you the latest insights and trends in the world of sales leadership. In this episode, we are joined by Paul Terry, a seasoned sales leader and expert in deep sales strategies. Today, we will be discussing the intersection of deep sales and AI in the modern sales landscape. Paul Terry leads the Enterprise business LinkedIn's Sales Solutions across EMEA & LATAM. In this role, Paul and his team help Sales Organisations to adopt the right habits, and technology, to succeed in a rapidly changing landscape. To start, Jason asks Paul to define what deep sales is and the importance of prioritizing this approach in modern sales leadership. Paul explains that deep sales are a response to the changing buyer landscape, where buyers have access to more information than ever before and are spending less time with salespeople. Deep sales are about going deeper on a smaller number of accounts, developing a more intimate understanding of the account and contacts within that account, and multi-threading into the organization. Paul highlights that deep sales are the opposite of shallow selling, which is throwing lots of things at the wall and seeing what sticks. Instead, it's about getting knowledgeable about your accounts and understanding the buying committee that makes the B2B purchasing decision. Paul emphasizes that the average buying committee today is between six and ten people, and successful salespeople need to acknowledge that fact and work collaboratively with others to achieve success. Moving on to AI, Jason asks Paul how AI can be used to enhance deep sales strategies. Paul explains that AI can be a valuable tool in helping salespeople conduct research on their target market and prioritize the accounts that give them the greatest chance of success. With AI, salespeople can analyze vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and make informed decisions based on those insights. Paul also emphasizes that AI can be used to automate tasks, freeing up salespeople's time to focus on building relationships and developing a deeper understanding of their accounts. With AI handling routine tasks, salespeople can spend more time on value-added activities that require their human touch. Jason and Paul then discuss the potential risks and downsides of using AI in sales, such as the risk of dehumanizing the sales process and losing the personal touch that is critical for building trust and rapport with clients. Paul emphasizes that deep sales and AI are not mutually exclusive but rather can complement each other when used effectively. Deep sales are about building relationships and understanding the unique needs of each client, while AI can help salespeople conduct research and automate routine tasks. By leveraging both deep sales and AI, sales leaders can position their teams for success in the modern sales landscape. Driven by a passion for connecting with and learning from inspiring individuals, Jason uses his platform to share stories and knowledge that can empower others to make positive changes in their lives. His YouTube channel is a hub for insightful conversations, practical advice, and thought-provoking ideas that can help viewers transform their mindset and approach to sales and business. Through his engaging and motivational speaking style, Jason has garnered a dedicated following of sales and business professionals who look to him for guidance and inspiration. “We come to you and ask you to enforce the law because if it is not enforced here, when will it be enforced? Are police officers going to be allowed to shoot from 90 to 100 bullets into an apartment of citizens of this country, whether they be black or white, poor, rich, Panthers or not Panthers, to use the color our laws to do that, to tear the place asunder, to beat people, to shoot them, to maim them for life, to kill them? Are they going to be able to? That is the question that you have to ask yourselves. These defendants, as police officers, are they going to be allowed to violate those rights in the face of the law, in the face of our Constitution, in the face of the Bill of Rights? I say you won't let them, and you will come back with a just and fair verdict which history will be proud of. That is what we ask and that is what the evidence demands.” That very prescient quote from Flint Taylor was said in 1977 during the trial of the cops that murdered Chicago Black Panther leader Fred Hampton. Sadly, not much has changed in the demands of the people to the people charged with protecting and serving the public. Much emphasis has been made in recent history on the unjustified homicide of Black citizens by police malfeasance. Another major source of police abuse has been the use of torture by police to elicit confessions and general cooperation by citizens. In this episode we will talk to former Black Panther Fred Hampton's Lawyer, Flint Taylor about his 50-year battle against police abuse and torture and inquire if police reform is truly possible. About Flint Taylor: G. FLINT TAYLOR, a graduate of Brown University and Northwestern Law School, is a founding partner of the People's Law Office in Chicago, an office which has been dedicated to litigating civil rights, police violence, government misconduct, and death penalty cases for 45 years. Among the landmark cases that Mr. Taylor has litigated are the Fred Hampton Black Panther case; the Greensboro, North Carolina case against the Ku Klux Klan and Nazis; the Ford Heights Four case in which four innocent men received a record $36 million settlement for their wrongful conviction and imprisonment; and a series of cases arising from a pattern and practice of police torture and cover-up by former Chicago police commander Jon Burge, former Mayor Richard M. Daley, former State's Attorney Richard Devine, and numerous other police and government officials, five of which have been settled against the City of Chicago and Cook County for a total of approximately $26 million. He obtained a multi-million dollar settlement for a seven year old boy who was falsely accused by the Chicago Police of the murder of 11 year old Ryan Harris and has represented, and continues to represent, numerous other wrongfully convicted persons who have spent decades in prison and on death row, including Burge torture victims Michael Tillman, Darrell Cannon, Ronald Kitchen, Alonzo Smith, Anthony Holmes, Victor Safforld, Shawn Whirl, and Jackie Wilson, exonerees Randy Steidl, Paul Terry, Ronald Jones, Jerry Miller, Oscar Walden, Lewis Gardner, Paul Phillips, Terrill Swift, and Jonathan Barr, and the first woman jailhouse lawyer in Illinois, Maxine Smith. In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guest Eli "The Hero of Tomorrow" Stone discuss about the 1996 animated Disney film James and the Giant Peach based on the 1961 book of the same name. It stars Paul Terry, Joanna Lumley, Miriam Margoyles, Pete Postlewaite, Simon Callow, Richard Dreyfuss, David Thewlis, Jane Leeves, and Susan Sarandon. The story focuses on a young boy named James Henry Trotter living a happy life with his parents having dreams of moving to New York City. However, his parents died by being eaten by a rhinoceros that escaped the zoo and James is forced to live with his mean aunts Spiker and Sponge. A mysterious old man gives James a bag of magical crocodile tongues to help James out of his troubles, but he accidentally dropped it and a small peach grows giant. James enters the giant peach and meets up with giant bugs who also want to get away from Spiker and Sponge. Together, they escape the aunts and partake in a journey to go to New York City. When the movie premiered in theaters, it was a box office failure making only $28 million dollars out of a $38 million budget despite getting good reviews from critics and releasing with little to no competition with other animated films. Even Roald Dahl's widow Liccy Dahl loved the movie and its depiction of James. Nonetheless, Disney wouldn't make another adaptation of a Roald Dahl book until 20 years later with The BFG (2016) directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie has become a cult classic for fans of Roald Dahl, Tim Burton, and Henry Selick. What do Patricia, Arun, and Eli think of the film? Young. Black. Alone. How do you lift yourself up when faced with trauma, few options, and a mountain of history pinning you down? The answers lie in connection and community. Paul Terry knew from Day 1 of the Changing the Narrative youth program what he wanted his topic to be. Having battled depression, he wanted to reach out and connect with others who might be suffering. Mentors and a sense of purpose had helped him stand back up. In his interview with SJLI staff members, Education Equity Programs Manager and educational scholar David Turner, and Health Equity Programs Director Derek Steele, Paul searches the underlying causes of depression in communities of color. What emerges is a nuanced narrative that fills the room with affirmation and hope. More than half of the podcasters in our mentoring program, are mentors themselves, volunteering in their churches, at SJLI, and at various youth programs offering their musical, tutoring and coding skills. In creating opportunities for themselves in business and art and career choices, they all made choices that lift others up. Connection. Community. On this episode of #LiveLegendary podcast I had the opportunity to be a guest on the #ChangingTheNarrative podcast segment led by Paul Terry talking about Mental Health in communities of color, particularly the black community. "Changing the Narrative" is a collaboration of Connectopod and SJLI funded by a grant from The California Arts Council. #ArtsCA It's not often that I get to share a platform with my man David Turner, one of the most brilliant minds today when it comes to the issues in the black community. When I’m in spaces with this guy, I'm learning more about myself and connect more dots about things I know. Of course, I was so focused that I didn't capture it from the beginning, but I did get a good amount of it, enough of it to share with my friends and family out there listening in. (My bad!

Since our producer decided to do other things this week, decided we would do the show on our own w/o him. He had his hands tied up with the Brandolino Family Fire Benefit and his head up his ass with Insomnia Station getting the single EP out. So, we are going to put out one more episode next week, then we are on vacation from sometime in July. Until then, ENJOY this episode. Long Time Divided; Pittsburgh PA Like the hometown of their inception, Long Time Divided is a band of blue-collar musicians, carving a name for themselves in the Pittsburgh music scene as one of the hardest working acts today. The wealth of musical knowledge that the members of the band bring to the group gives Long Time Divided a very polished hard rock sound. Each person's distinctive style blends almost seamlessly with the others: lead singer DJ Beckage's grunge rock vocals weave through the harmonic crunch, hammered out by guitarists Paul Terry and Dean Toughlian. Bassist Bob Beveridge and Drummer Jason Slick form the bedrock of the band; Bob bringing his soulful intensity to the bass in tandem with Jason's almost robotic-like precision to the drums. Long Time Divided has kept themselves grounded because they have never forgotten their roots and their fans who have elevated them. Formed from five, they are Long Time Divided. Just have to listen in to see what songs were featured. Decadent Nation, Columbia Decadent Nation has been eviscerating stages for over a decade with their own, unique brand of modern blues-based rock. Having toured coast to coast, releasing multiple records to critical acclaim, DN socio-political rock is more relevant than ever. According to Paul Terry, Ph.D., president and CEO of StayWell Health Management, when evaluating health coaching and population health programs, it is rare to see a return on investment in a program's first year, but generally by the second and third years, ROI begins to build. In addition to discussing ROI trends, Terry evaluates the value of self-reported data and the impact health coaching can have on an organization's productivity, presenteeism and absenteeism, and also gives some benchmarks for ROI in health coaching. Terry, along with Dr. Craig Nelson, director of health services research for American Specialty Health, described the measures to look at when evaluating health coaching and population health programs and provided case studies of how they are actually using these measures to demonstrate a health management ROI during a March 25, 2009 webinar, Calculating the Health Coaching ROI: Models and Results.
