Ahora Jazz, Ed. 2256. Con Javier del Barco.
Today we have the pleasure and honor of introducing one of my favorite saxophonists, electric pianist, vocalist and musical composers, Mr. Casey Benjamin. He is a Grammy award winning artist/musician who captivates his audience with an electrifying, eccentric, and unique sound. He formerly played in Stefon Harris & the Blackout. And is currently a part of the Grammy award winning band the Robert Glasper Experiment. He has produced and worked with countless artists including some of my favorite musicians such as Robert Glasper, Jill Scott, Kaytranda, Kendrick Lamar, and the great legend Phillip Bailey. So come join us to discuss the significance of music artistry. More importantly, the value in staying authentic to self and utilizing the world around you for connectivity.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of performers and songwriters whose work joyfully throws genre out the window in search of something bigger: Robert Glasper and Emily King. Glasper started his career pretty firmly in the jazz world, though as you'll hear in this conversation he really started out by playing in churches in his native Texas. But in 2012 he released an album called Black Radio with his electric quartet, the Robert Glasper Experiment, which gleefully knocked down boundaries between jazz and hip-hop, and featured such artists as Erykah Badu and Lupe Fiasco—not to mention an awesome cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” His catalog before and since is too broad and varied to cover in any depth here, but in addition to jazz and R&B records, he's done a bunch of movie and TV work—including a bit of acting, which you'll hear about—won a handful of Grammys, and helped curate the Blue Note Jazz Festival, another topic of conversation here. Right now he's in the middle of “Robtober,” his monthlong residency at New York's Blue Note Jazz Club, which will feature an incredible lineup of guests throughout. The other half of this conversation is Glasper's friend and fellow Blue Note alumni Emily King, herself a Grammy nominee whose music exists at the corner of R&B, soul, and pop. Her third and latest album, Special Occasion, is brash, heartfelt, and energetic, and she's an incredible presence live. The album, like most of King's work, was produced by Jeremy Most, who happens to be an old schoolmate of Glasper's—and with whom King was in a long-term relationship with until just recently. (You can hear a bit of that tension in its songs, in a good way.) King will be opening for Marc Rebelliet later this month at Red Rocks, which is pretty awesome. Check out a little bit of “Special Occasion” right here. In this lively chat, these two talk about how the New York Times accidentally named Glasper's band for him, the chances of Glasper becoming a PEGOT—you'll see—how being a messy person might make you creative, and more. There's also talk of bad hairstyle choices, and how having white friends might exacerbate that problem. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Robert Glasper and Emily King for chatting. If you liked what you hear, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Robert Glasper draws together his parallel passions for hip hop and jazz on his 2012 release, Black Radio. In addition to his formal jazz training, the pianist has long navigated the nebulous territory between the two genres – working with artists like Q-Tip, Kanye West, and Erykah Badu. In 2012, The Robert Glasper Experiment (featuring Casey Benjamin, Derrick Hodge, and Chris Dave) joined us for a live set in the Greene Space with a special guest – “Black Radio” collaborator and Grammy-nominated R&B artist Bilal. Pianist and producer Robert Glasper is on a mission to reconnect jazz with black music. In the past decade he's helped transform the work of artists like Kendrick Lamar, Brittany Howard and more.Glasper ended the the 2000s with an album called Double Booked, which made a selling point out of his straddling of two worlds — acoustic jazz piano on one side, R&B/hip-hop groove on the other. The second of those involved a group called The Robert Glasper Experiment, and he felt it had a statement to make.It arrived in the form of an album called Black Radio, which Blue Note released in 2012. Studded with notable guest artists (like rappers Lupe Fiasco and Yasiin Bey, and singers Lalah Hathaway and Erykah Badu), it heralded a renewed spirit of collaboration between jazz and what had previously been known as neo-soul. When Black Radio won a Grammy in 2013 — not in a jazz category but for Best R&B Album — it felt like the opening of a new chapter. On this episode of All Songs Considered, host Robin Hilton is joined by Nate Chinen, from WBGO and Jazz Night in America, and Rodney Carmichael, from NPR Music, to discuss the influence of Glasper's approach — not only in jazz circles but also on hip-hop touchstones like Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly, and beyond-soul masterworks released this year, like Flying Lotus' Flamagra and Brittany Howard's Jaime.

Johnny Popcorn is a five member rock band which features vocals from Hezekiah and Jani Coral. Initially, Johnny Popcorn was founded by producer/bassist Tone Whitfield (Me’shell Ndegeocello and Zap Mama) and songwriter/emcee/producer Hezekiah (Rawkus Records) after several late nights working on R&B artist Bilal’s album. Their early works were pet studio projects released causally to music fans at live shows and digital downloads. Hezekiah feeling stagnant in hip hop started to devote more time to Johnny Popcorn. Hezekiah started to recruit musicians to form a touring band which included guitarist Lloyd Alexander. The band solidified when Virginia native Jani Coral added her raspy like vocals to the band. Now with an innovated sound and direction, Johnny Popcorn continues to ignite live shows and record emotional driven songs. Johnny Popcorn has opened for Bilal, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, RJD2, Robert Glasper Experiment, Oddisee, Ladi6, and Kindred & the Family Soul.

Here's a flashback episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Ausar Ra Black Hawk for the week of May 2, 2016 [originally broadcast during the week of February 8, 2012] with some new and classic music from the international Black Diaspora, news and commentary. Our commentary during that week touched base on the recent unearthing of a 50-year old lost Malcolm X speech audio, our personal reviews of the big budget Tuskegee Airmen movie "Red Tails", the possible Daft Punk/Nile Rodgers upcoming album and some other diverse topics here and there. We also had a special interview related to the upcoming HBO Documentary Films premiere of "The Loving Story", with director/producer Nancy & daughter of Richard and Mildred Loving, Peggy Loving. The film covers the drama, history & the current state of interracial marriage and tolerance in the United States through the personal story of the Lovings, who back in the 1960s fought for the right to live as a married couple regardless of their racial backgrounds all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Their case struck down a lot of the anti-miscegenation laws throughout the country. For more information about "The Loving Story", go to the film's official website, http://www.LovingFilm.com. Our commentary this week touched base on the recent unearthing of a 50-year old lost Malcolm X speech audio, our personal reviews of the big budget Tuskegee Airmen movie "Red Tails", the possible Daft Punk/Nile Rodgers upcoming album and some other diverse topics here and there. We also has a special interview related to the upcoming HBO Documentary Films premiere of "The Loving Story", with director/producer Nancy & daughter of Richard and Mildred Loving, Peggy Loving.
