The Monday Morning Dad, hosted by Ryan Shaughnessy & Ben Garcia, will encourage biblical growth as dads by learning from our past and being hopeful for our future. Let’s get those wins up!
As you all know we love Disney as a family - the creativity of fantasy, the joy the parks bring our family, the meticulous care and experience the cast members provide, the sense of imagination and wonder and adventure - these are all things we love about Disney. Unfortunately just as there are some great things about Disney, it's no secret they've been in hot water lately for a variety of reasons - political and social. And while it may be easy for many families to "boycott" Disney, I don't think that's necessarily the only option families have. The videos in this series will take a look at Disney media and ask how we can redeem those areas in culture. How do we stay faithful to God, while still engaging our culture in a meaningful way? As fathers, it's our job to help kids discern and learn how to interpret culture based on what they see and what they know about the character and Word of God.
In this episode I walk you through what my Daily Plan looks like - a series of questions aimed at focusing my schedule and relationships to live a life in pursuit of being faithful, fruitful, and fit. Jim Hensel says "We must connect our beliefs, or our core values, to a great routine, including rules, habits, and a system you create so you can daily re-aim and continually move forward and grow." My Daily Plan is a way for me to connect my core values to a routine in order to continually grow as a disciple, husband, father, friend, and employee.
Jim Hensel is the creator of the Mayhem Mindset program, and has dedicated his career to helping others define themselves and create personal philosophy and vision while getting clear on their mission in life. He has worked with individuals like CrossFit Games Champion Rich Froning and MMA Champion Michael Chandler. In this episode we discuss our identity, purpose, and values while exploring how these things help us as followers of Christ, husbands, fathers, and even grandfathers! Here's some of the questions we answer: What it means that our purpose is in our design - it's not something we do Our identity and purpose as followers of Christ How to identify and define core values in your life Core values as a family How positive values can anchor you in adversity and ground you in success If you're interested in diving into this more, follow Jim at @jimmy_hensel on Instagram or visit https://www.jimhensel.com/. I've changed my thinking around productivity from something that serves me to more of a stewardship issue. God has entrusted us with gifts and skills and time and money and people, and if we are NOT productive with those things it shows poor stewardship. It's not just so you can get more done, check off more boxes on your to-do list, add more things to the list, and continue the dreaded cycle. It's so that you can be more active in the work God is doing and be a good steward of the gifts he has given us. _____________________ Recommended Resources: "Do More Better" by Tim Challies: https://www.amazon.com/Do-More-Better-Practical-Productivity/dp/1941114172 "High Impact Teams" by Lance Witt: https://www.amazon.com/High-Impact-Teams-Lance-Witt/dp/0801075688 "Time Management Magic" by Lee Cockerell: https://www.amazon.com/Time-Management-Magic-Surviving-Thriving/dp/1642793183

Now here's the deal, these are meant to be fun and funny for the most part. These may be very petty and first world problems, but they're things that have ever so slightly been getting under my skin.

Hey dads - when's the last time you cried? While the world tells us we should "man up" and not show emotion, the Bible tells us how we can show emotion and respond to our feelings in a godly way. How can dads help set the temperature in the room like a thermostat instead of a thermometer? Do you have to insert yourself in every situation or is there room for kids to figure it out themselves? How does the way you were raised contribute to how you treat your kids? What's the ultimate goal as dads when we're dealing with our kids' emotions?
How are we entertained? How should parents treat screen time? How do you filter content for your kids? What do we do when things slip through the cracks? Is there anything good that comes from screen time?
We're back! Ben will be joining Ryan for each episode and we've added a sports segment in so our wives don't have to listen to our banter. In this episode we look at 1 Corinthians 13:11 and talk about what it looks like to grow in maturity and help others grow as well.
Cat's out of the bag - the Uphoffs had their baby! Elias Martin Uphoff joined us on October 12, 2020 and now Austin & Kayla have a couple months under their belts as parents. It's a party this week as the 4 of us share their birth story and how it has impacted them as parents. You can find Part 1 with Austin in Episode 3 of the Monday Morning Dad Podcast.
We're just two parents with two kids and all of us are bent toward being ungrateful. We talk about the goal of gratitude, being grateful whether we're in the "wilderness" or in "fertile land", and look at some ways to grow in gratitude while encouraging our kids to grow in gratitude as well.
*From the Fairfax Bible Church Discipleship Podcast* We all deal with anger - it may explode, simmer, or seem dormant, but we all experience anger. With anger defined as what we experience when we perceive something is WRONG and IMPORTANT, Matt and Ryan discuss anger from a biblical viewpoint as it relates to the character of God.
The BEST guest joins me this week to chat about all the fun we had at Kalahari Resort in Pennsylvania this past week. Big water slides, arcade games that go "ding" and spit out lots of tickets, and TV shows first thing in the morning. Grace loves vacation.
Jack Attack joins the podcast to share the birth story of little Ginny Gill, born on October 16th.
Live from Burleson, Texas, Ben Garcia joins me at the ironing board for a quick chat about Halloween. Best candy, one we can get rid of, favorite costumes from the past? These are all questions we dig into. We also talk about how the holiday can be redeemed and celebrated to the glory of God!

With election season in full force, Ben Garcia joins the podcast again to discuss 5 Political Golden Nuggets (PGN's) that will help fix our eyes on Jesus and encourage unity. 1. Do Your Homework 2. Prioritize Loving Others 3. Don't Make Your Beliefs an Idol 4. God is the standard of right & wrong 5. Purpose of Government/Respect Authority
This message was given on July 28, 2013 at Fairfax Bible Church. A new heart... 1. Is essential for a Christian (Ezekiel 36:22-26) 2. Must produce results in your life (Ezekiel 36:27-31) 3. Ultimately shapes our view of the Father (Ezekiel 36:22-32)
How do we make disciples? Is there a difference when we're talking about our own family? What are some challenges we face in discipling our kids? These are all questions we answer in this episode with Matt Rumbaugh (master of all things discipleship)!
You can take the preacher out of the pulpit, but you can't take the pulpit out of the preacher...or something like that....
"Chatty" Chris is hanging out with us this week answering the "5 W's" of fatherhood. Another dad of 2 girls, Chris helps us learn a lot about what makes a great Biblical father and shares another epic dad fail with us. Spoiler alert: don't wear socks on hardwoods...
Ben Garcia comes back to chat about the enneagram and how we can use it to gain an understanding of ourselves, our wives, and our kids so that we can be better dads who point our families to Jesus!
Revelation 7:9 talks about a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages standing before the throne. I cannot wait for that day, but my hope is that we get to experience a small taste of that here on earth. I am thankful that I get to stand shoulder to shoulder with Stephon Chester and encourage our church and fellow dads to pursue unity through the gospel of Jesus.
Planning for the future is a worship concern - our hearts in saving and investing show WHAT or WHO we really worship. Once we have a biblical understanding of the gifts we've been given, we'll be able to plan well for OUR future and our KIDS' future. TJ Shaughnessy joins us this week to share some thoughts on how to do this well.
When we talk about "being present" with our family, we don't just mean being in the same room with them. There's more of an emotional presence than a physical presence. Andrew Watkins joins us to discuss how he's been able to engage well with his family and be more emotionally present.
Fear and anxiety are struggles a lot of parents deal with, but there is hope found in Psalm 56 - We can put our trust in God when we are afraid, and He is for us! Shannon joins me to talk about her experiences with anxiety, how husbands can support their wives, and how we can lead our kids through fear and anxiety.
It wouldn't be a dad podcast without having THE dad on the podcast! Tim Shaughnessy joins us this week in a new format called the "5 W's", which consist of a WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, and WHY question related to fatherhood.
Joe Wilbur is a dad of 4 - 2 girls that he gets to hug and kiss every day, 2 others that he will meet in Heaven one day. We talk with Joe about leading through the loss of a child through miscarriage and an ectopic pregnancy.

In this "Before" segment, we chat with Austin Uphoff who is eagerly awaiting the arrival of his baby! Stick around for some labor & delivery trivia to test yourself.
How many kids should we have? In today's world 2.5 seems like the "right" idea - maybe even trending lower than that - but what does the Bible have to say about this? Ben Garcia (dad of 4) jumps on to share some thoughts from Psalm 127 and Genesis 1.
