This episode features a discussion with student ministry leaders Paxton Bauer and Brittany Warnell about discipling teenagers in the church. They explore the challenges students face today, including questions of belonging, cultural tensions, and intellectual doubts about faith. The conversation highlights research showing that 59% of young Christians disconnect from church after age 15, but those in meaningful mentoring relationships are significantly more likely to maintain their faith. The hosts emphasize that students need to feel they belong before they truly believe or change their behavior, and discuss practical ways church members can connect with students through mentoring relationships and intergenerational interactions on Sundays. Their message is clear: simple conversations with teens can make a profound difference in their spiritual journey. This weekend was another whirlwind of travel basketball, but instead of letting the chaos take over, I focused on stewardship—both of my body and my boys' hearts. In this episode, I'm sharing:✅ How I stayed on track with my health by packing simple, high-protein snacks and meals on the go.✅ How I used travel ball as a discipleship opportunity—because our kids are always watching how we live out our faith, even in the busy moments.✅ Encouragement for fellow moms balancing it all and wanting to honor God in their wellness and parenting. No matter how full our schedules get, we can prioritize our health and pour into our kids spiritually. Let's chat about it!
Send us a textThe pressure on high school graduates today is immense. The future looms large with a thousand unknowns:"What am I going to do with my life?""Who will I marry?""Should I go to college?""How do I even function as an adult?"For students raised in Christian homes, these questions shouldn't be left to guesswork. They should be rooted in something deeper—discipleship to Jesus. But what if there was a path that didn't just prepare young people for what's next, but actually formed them into the kind of people who could follow Jesus into their future with confidence? That's why we're so excited to welcome Jeff Hackett, Outreach Pastor at Centerpointe, and Michael Davis, Resident Director of the new OneLife location launching in Buffalo, NY.OneLife isn't just another gap-year program. Discipling our kids comes in two forms—taught and caught. We need to teach them about our faith, how to have a relationship with Christ, and the value of God's Word. But what is so crucial is to allow them to catch us living out our faith in front of them. Honestly, the “taught” part is often easier than the “caught”. Because it's more of a “don't do as I do, do as I say” thing. But God wants to use our kids in our lives to make us more like Jesus just as much as He wants to use us in their lives.Proverbs 22:6 is an often-quoted verse that offers us a clear command but also makes a promise. A promise … not a guarantee.Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. (NLT) Let's take the verse apart … Direct your children … to direct, you have to be engaged, either beside them or leading them.Onto the right path … in light of being in the Bible, the right path is the one that leads toward God.And when they are older …. Kids are easier to influence when they are young. Leading in the right direction toward God at a young age builds a foundation for later. They will not leave it … again, this can't be a guarantee because people walk away from their faith, or refuse it. But let's think of it this way: our job is to pour God into our kids, so later, He can use our influence in their hearts.Listen once again, this time in The Message … Point your kids in the right direction—when they're old they won't be lost.So a great place to start on discipling your kids in spiritual training is simply to keep asking: Where am I pointing my kids? And then to ask: Is my “caught” pointing the same place as my “taught”?What is way I can point my kids in the right direction this week? What is something that should shift in my day to day walk that would provide an opportunity for my kids to catch me walking in faith?Need to make some adjustments? That's okay, God's grace and mercy is there to make all the adjustments you need to make, for you and your kids.Let's pray together: “Heavenly Father, I need You to teach me what you need my kids to know about You. Lead me when I pray. Guide me in Your Word. Help me to catch all I can from you in any way I possibly can. As above, so below.”

Hi, I'm John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, and you're listening to Share Life Today. Mark Dever says, "The Christian life is the discipled life and the discipling life.” We need both to grow a healthy, full walk with Christ. So let's take our time to study the Word, pray without ceasing, fellowship with other Christians, worship our amazing, Living God, and share our faith with others. And even better if these things happen under a mentor who has walked with God longer than us! This will set us on a path of being discipled. And then, we ourselves are called to reach out and disciple someone else. This could look like us sharing the Gospel, seeing someone give their life to Christ, and then walking with them in spiritual growth as a new believer. I can personally tell you — experiencing this lights a fire in the soul and an excitement and joy in your walk with Christ! This is a picture of what the church should be—discipleship reaching across the generations. For more resources to get you started, visit sharelife.today.

In this next teaching on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Leah explores his leadership in the Confessing Church and his efforts to disciple Christian resistance in Nazi Germany. She shares how Bonhoeffer trained young pastors in an underground seminary, centering their faith on intentional community and the radical teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. His writings from this period, Discipleship and Life Together, challenge us to embrace “costly grace” —a faith the resists injustice rather than conforming to empire. Leah also reflects on the story of Martin Niemöller, a pastor who initially supported Hitler but later repented and spoke out, reminding us that resistance can take many forms. This teaching invites us to examine our own discipleship, the communities that shape us, and how we are called to live out faith in ways that challenge oppression.Review Leah's notes here and listen to or watch the teaching below.

Dr. Jeff Myers, President of Summit Ministries, joins Ray, Mark, and Oscar to discuss discipling the next generation. Oscar shares that Gen Z is the least religious generation but not due to atheism; instead, they wrestle with faith, loneliness, and purpose. They are more inclined to listen to Jordan Peterson than Richard Dawkins, revealing a hunger for something greater than what the world offers. Unfortunately, many churches have responded poorly by focusing on superficial changes instead of addressing deeper needs, leading some young people to seek transcendent experiences in liturgical churches. True discipleship involves welcoming young people into genuine community and guiding them toward a sense of purpose and connection.Jeff emphasized the importance of creating spaces where hard questions can be asked without judgment. Ministries like Summit and Living Waters equip Christians to address these questions with grace, focusing on connecting people to Christ as the ultimate truth. Christianity uniquely bridges the gap between humanity and God, offering answers to life's deepest questions.Discipleship today should mirror biblical discipleship, where Jesus lived and worked alongside His followers. It's about inviting others into daily life, asking and answering questions, and modeling faith authentically. In a time when many pastors fall publicly, seeing faith lived out in a genuine way is transformative. Jeff encourages older Christians to step up as mentors, reminding us that discipleship doesn't require advanced theological knowledge—just a willingness to guide others in their faith journey. For those seeking mentors, Jeff advises identifying areas of need and praying for God to connect you with people who can help. This approach builds a network of mentors and fosters intergenerational relationships within the church. Oscar highlights the importance of vulnerability, sharing how one of his mentors asked for forgiveness, profoundly shaping his faith. Discipleship involves displaying humility and continually pointing others to Christ.Jeff shared about Summit Ministries' impact, particularly through its two-week programs where students learn from top Christian experts across various fields. These experiences equip students to discern truth, identify and turn from bad ideas, and recognize that everything in life falls under the lordship of Jesus Christ. By fostering this understanding, Summit sets young people on a path toward spiritual freedom and a deeper connection with God.Send us a textThanks for listening! Your faith grows best when you encourage others along in theirs. Discipling someone else doesn't have to be complicated; it is simply having relationships with Kingdom purpose.

This week, Pastor Suzy Silk continued our sermon series on Missional Formation by focusing on the distinctive of Discipling the Deficits and the discipline of confessing sin as keys to being counter-formed from the ways of the world into the ways of Jesus. Pastor Suzy called us to walk in freedom by regularly inviting the Holy Spirit to search our hearts, confessing specific sins regularly, and committing to accountability in a trusted group. Confession and obedience lead to greater freedom, intimacy with God, and the increased ability to reflect His image in the world.
