Kelly and Lizz have a BIG show for you this week with finance expert Rachel Cruze! But before they get there, Kelly has a big update on Fred's birthday. Remember when she said she wasn't going to throw him a birthday party? Plans have now been made and there will be a party. But the big story in today's episode is, of course, Kelly and Lizz's chat with Rachel Cruze! They discuss what it was like growing up the daughter of Dave Ramsey and how they taught her about money at an early age. She talks about when is the right time to introduce money and allowances to your kids and how to do it. Of course, they couldn't let Rachel go without getting her favorite Ditch the Drive-Thru recipe: white sauce pasta. In honor of Columbus Day, we're reposting a Hold These Truths classic from 2020 with historian Dr. Mary Grabar: You may have never heard of him, but no historian has had a greater influence on modern America than Howard Zinn. His most popular work, A Peoples History of the United States, was brought into the cultural mainstream with Matt Damon's Oscar winning 1997 film Good Will Hunting. The book is a precursor to the 1619 Project - tracing the roots of America's sins and inequities to Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage and the rise of capitalism. So for Columbus Day, we invited Dr. Mary Grabar, a historian and author of "Debunking Howard Zinn: Exposing the Fake History That Turned A Generation Against America", to join us for an objective look at Zinn's perspective on American history, his motivations for attacking the USA and capitalism, and the ramifications of his influence on generations of academia. Dr. Mary Grabar is an author and a resident fellow at the The Alexander Hamilton Institute for the Study of Western Civilization. She is also the founder of the Dissident Prof Education Project. In this episode, I dive into my story of a third-grade girl who thought carbs were "bad," revealing a broader issue: the unintended messages parents send about food. I explore how conversations and actions at home can plant seeds of confusion around nutrition, sometimes leading kids to develop food fears or misunderstand basic health principles. You'll learn about the long-term impact that these misconceptions can have on children's eating habits and self-perception, and I offer practical strategies for parents to shift the narrative around food in a positive way. From elementary to high school, I walk through age-appropriate approaches to teaching kids about nutrition, both at home and through school-based initiatives. In this episode we talk about: - Casual comments about food and their lasting impact on kids. - My conversation with three school administrators and the surprising trends they notice at their schools when it comes to kids and eating patterns. - What you can do as parents, no matter if your child is elementary, middle, high school, or college-age, to help develop foundational nutrition habits within you child and your family. *Don't forget to share this with a friend or family member! Absolutely for a while, but eventually they're going to have to operate in this world. The whole point of parenting is to guide your kids to become critical thinkers as they participate in the world through social media so that they're not distracted and their life isn't distorted by the messages that are coming through. Scott Schimmel (02:00): Advertisers have used scare tactics and scarcity to sell throughout time, and it's really no different in social media. I'm a grown man, and yet I am so distracted by the messages that come through media, particularly social media. Scott Schimmel (03:00): I remember being in Maui, the absolute vacation of our dreams for my wife and I. One day, I scrolled through social media and saw another family on a trip in Zion National Park. Suddenly, I felt bad that we weren't there instead, even though I was in my favorite place in the world. Scott Schimmel (04:30): If I, with my achievements and stability, can feel worse because of social media, how much more will this happen to a kid who hasn't formed a life yet? Scott Schimmel (06:30): Eventually, your kids will have access to social media. The key question is whether they will be mindful and self-aware, able to think critically, or if they will be victims of the false messages telling them they're not enough. Scott Schimmel (07:30): At The YouSchool, we've designed the Tech Healthy Parenting course to help parents navigate these issues. By consuming media with your kids and discussing the underlying messages, you can guide them to be thoughtful and wise. Learning to stand up, speak up, and promote empowered decisions, while supporting and cheering for strong women, shows your children they can do the same. If you want them rising each time they fall, standing up to mistreatment, believing in themselves when others don't, and choosing to go after their dreams, it's time to strengthen that within yourself. You are their primary example of how to be. Taylor Swift is a prime example of rising each time you fall, getting up even when others try to push you down. She does it over and over again. Whether you like her or don't is irrelevant for this. This is about change. It's about being strong yourself, learning why you stay small and quiet in certain circumstances, and how you can start making a difference in your own life and those around you.
