As our children grow up, they may start to handle some things themselves. This could be chores, getting up on time, or saving up their allowance or earned money whenever they want a new toy. This is a natural part of getting older, but as a parent, it can be difficult to navigate when to step in and when is it healthy to let your child fail. There are going to be times when “helping” is actually preventing our children from developing their independence and sense of responsibility. We've been going through this with our own son lately so this conversation hit home as we are asking ourselves if we were actually helping our son or if we are feeding an entitled spirit. And this topic of entitlement can pop up in all kinds of areas such as how much to buy for our kids, how much we expect them to help out around the house, or even when it comes to birthdays and Christmas gifts.Today's guest, Kristen Welch, has wrestled through these questions in her own home. She is the author of Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World and the founder and CEO of Mercy House Global, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower marginalized communities with life-changing opportunities that create hope.In this episode, Kristen shares :The connection between gratitude and happinessHow to identify entitlementThe danger of instant gratificationAnd much more!We hope you enjoy this conversation!Show Notes: growinghometogether.com/kristen-welch-102

How are you going to be present in the moment with Jesus? In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, and Kristen discuss: Gratitude is born at the crossroads of perspective.Living life with a grateful heart. Finding your life of purpose. The key to raising grateful kids. Capturing the moments and the audience that matter most. Staying present in the moment, looking up, looking around, and slowing down. Key Takeaways: Jesus is all we need. There is no need for comparison with our neighbors because He is all we need (either those with more or those with less). We all have the opportunity to respond to what we are experiencing. Doing nothing is a response, but is it working? If not, what can you do to make a change? Kids can sniff out hypocrisy. They know when you're not doing what you tell them to do. If you want to raise children who follow Jesus, then you must follow Jesus. There are opportunities to live the gospel every day in the making of the beds and the peanut butter sandwiches. Have dinner with your family, slow down, take a walk, and connect. "Jesus is enough. He is more than enough. Giving our life away is a beautiful way to live." — Kristen Welch About Kristen Welch: Kristen Welch is a compassionate leader and accomplished author dedicated to making a meaningful impact on vulnerable families. GET THE FREE APP It's hard being a parent in today's culture. Good parents want to know "How do you raise Godly children in today's culture?" Learning how to raise children correctly can seem impossible sometimes. Many times parents tend to overcorrect from their parents' mistakes which just creates more mistakes. And the way systems are set up for our kids, it seems to make them remain kids longer, and they can't think for themselves or really take care of themselves. With the way kids come out of college, many parents wish they had never sent their kids to college. It leaves us stuck asking ourselves, "How do I raise kids I actually like?" It's important to understand that we're trying to raise kids to be adults, not kids to remain children. With that in mind, there are actually very effective and practical ways to raise up our children exactly the way we want them to turn out.You can actually easily shape your children to be more grateful, caring, self-reliant, emotionally intelligent, free thinking and financially literate. Scott Donnell helps teach thousands of parents how to not make parenting mistakes that will ruin a child's growth. @Scottdonnell Scott Donnell teaches parents how to prepare your children for the world. He helps show parents how their kids can thrive in everything they do as they grow. It all starts with learning the mindset of Value Creation.Scott wrote the book "Value Creation Kid: The Healthy Struggles Your Children Need to Succeed." Scott dives deep in tried and true methods of giving your children an incredible advantage for their life journeys. Scott helps teach a Home Economy System for families, so that kids become critical thinkers and entrepreneurial minded in everything they do. So they become goal oriented and results driven rather than wasting time and effort needlessly for failed paths. This is one way kids prosper when they understand what it means to create value first. This system helps parents much more easily teach their children about money, and how to make finances fun for kids. But money is only a tool, value creation is the key to finding financial success, as well as emotional and spiritual success.Scott teaches the 3 E's - Expectation, Expenses, Extra-Pay. When you do these three correctly, your kids won't ask you for money anymore. They'll learn budgeting, delayed gratification, value of goods, trade off of goods. They won't have an entitled attitude. They can prosper without having to complain about a silver spoon in their mouth. But they also won't have a poverty mindset that keeps them defeated. This strategy works much more effectively than old systems of allowance, busy chores, selfish thinking. This helps children understand their roles and responsibilities in their family, but it also gives them great ingenuity and motivation for how to understand and grow the life-giving natural gifts that they have.Watch as Brett gains a lot of wisdom dialoguing with Scott Donnell about how to truly prosper your kids and your whole family. How are you teaching your children about generosity? In this episode, Jeff and Nathan discuss: A global perspective of God's reach from a young age. Growing up in the Barnhart family with a blended education. What it means to have a community in Christ. Living intentionally with consistency. Key Takeaways: The God of your life is the same God of the world. He is the same worldwide. We are stewards of all God gives us - business, money, children, resources, etc. All we have can be used for His glory. Living a life consistent with scripture will look different for everybody, but it is possible to set your family's lifestyle around generosity, not consumption. Kids are wildly observant and will pick up on things you never would guess and they will learn from everything you do and don't do. Take stock of what the Lord has given you. It may not look like what others have, but they are your gifts from God for His glory and to steward in His kingdom. "Generosity is not these big highlight reel type of occasions - it's not giving away the company, it's not writing the huge check. Generosity is seeing what you have as a gift from God to bless Him and to bless others." — Nathan Barnhart Episode References: Young Life: https://younglife.org/Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World by Kristen Welch - https://www.amazon.com/Raising-Grateful-Kids-Entitled-World/dp/1496405293 About Nathan Barnhart: My name is Nathan Barnhart, a third-generation employee at Barnhart Crane and Rigging Company, where I've dedicated the last decade to various roles across the company in Knoxville, Iowa, Memphis, and Portland. Charlie has been struggling with gift-giving and being unable to keep or open the presents herself. Morgen can't help but wonder if there is more she should be doing to teach her about giving to others and ensure Charlie isn't becoming spoiled. The last thing any parent or teacher wants is to see a kid grow up to act entitled like the world owes you something. Humility and gratitude are universal traits we all uphold. Kids, by nature and age, live in the center of their own world and grow up expecting to be given what they need. Because, well- they're kids. But we need to teach them how to recognize that life is not all about them. In fact, life works better when we put others first and show gratitude for what we've been given. Most students don't practice gratitude, and they won't unless they learn how powerful and relevant it can actually be for their everyday life. There's fascinating research from neuroscience and psychologists in recent years: Gratitude makes you healthier: It's been shown to lower stress, reduce pain, and even improve our immune systems, blood pressure, and heart function. Gratitude makes you happier: Scientists studying positive psychology found that a one-time act of thoughtful gratitude produced an immediate 10% increase in happiness and 35% reduction in depressive symptoms. Gratitude rewires your brain: you begin new pathways of positive thinking, positive action, and pro-social behavior. It gives you an experience of joy, thankfulness, and connection (it takes at least 15 seconds of intentional savoring and thoughtful concentration). Raising grateful kids doesn't happen by accident. They won't grow up that way automatically—they must be taught the importance of gratitude, see it modeled, and practice it over time. Research has proven that grateful people have stronger social bonds. Duh. Does anyone like being around an entitled person? Nope. One simple exercise you can do is to pick someone you're grateful for, write down at least 5 reasons why, and then either write them a letter (not a text!), call them and share the list with them, or tell them face to face. Bonus points if you bribe your kids to try it, too. But even if they don't, if they see you do it, that's a homerun.
Entitlement has become an epidemic among our kids. We are raising children in a quick-fix society, where everything they want seems to be available at the touch of a button (or a holler out to Alexa!) Many of us (me included!) have grown frustrated with this issue, and wonder if there is some way to fight against it. Kristen Welch, founder of Mercy House Global, and author of “Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World” (among other awesome books) joins us today to talk about gratitude, which she calls the antidote for entitlement! Kristen is sharing 6 ways we can “train our kids” (and ourselves) in gratitude…These are practical and do-able -- at the holidays, and all year long. This week, Jenna and Jenelle attempt to tackle the tough topic of raising grateful kids. Parents often assume their kids should just be grateful for all the opportunity and privilege they have but gratitude is a learned experience and is actually very unnatural to small children. They can't be expected to jump for joy at every sweater Grandma gives them for Christmas. In fact, they are more likely to be over-stimulated at holidays and have a much less desirable reaction. So how do we turn these “greedy little animals” into appreciative, generous, empathetic beings? Who knows, but Jenna and Jenelle have some jumping off points to help get you started. Jenna will dive into her nightly gratitude ritual, and how she mindfully eats in order to feel more grateful regularly. Jenelle will realize she spends approximately zero minutes being mindful or grateful per day. Which side do you fall on? And do you think it trickles down to your kids? @drbeckyatgoodinside

We’re taking a pause from our summer series on health and it is well worth it. Kristen is one of those people whose life has been radically changed and you can’t help but be changed as you listen to her. And in many ways, shouldn’t that be what all of our lives are like? As we encounter Jesus for ourselves and are changed, shouldn’t that be what others say about us all? This episode will encourage you, but more than anything I think it will challenge you as it challenged me. What if us running toward comfort in our lives, and holding back from those things that scare us, the things that God has set right before us in our lives to get our attention - what if those are the exact things we need to thrive? What if our best life is actually found in turning to face those things head on. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
Most of us would like our kids to express— and feel— more gratitude. But yelling “There are children in India who don’t even have XBoxes!” doesn’t seem to be sufficiently getting the message across. Kids are kids; they lack perspective by definition. Practicing gratitude means having the ability to imagine a reality other than one’s own, and that might take a while. Researchers Blaire Morgan and Liz Gulliford explain it this way in their book Developing Gratitude in Children and Adolescents: It is largely agreed that gratitude is not inbuilt; instead it develops over time, as certain capacities become available and cognitive abilities mature… it requires a great deal of practice. Still, gratitude really matters, and our kids having that skill isn’t just about bonus parenting points for us. Our children will have better lives if they’re more grateful. Seriously, studies. Parenting expert Jennifer Wallace says gratitude creates “an upward spiral of positive emotions,” and who doesn’t want those? So: until that attitude of gratitude comes naturally, how do we get our kids to say “thank you” like they mean it? Maybe even remember to do so unprompted once in a while? In this episode, we discuss specific ways to build a practice of gratitude with (and for) your kids, at all ages and stages. Kristen Welch is a busy mother of three who runs the popular blog “We Are That Family” (WeAreThatFamily.com), in addition to a non-profit called Mercy Global House. That experience turned her world upside down and led her and her family to start Mercy Global House--an organization that helps empower women and families in Kenya. Kristen wishes to give every family the tools to experience what it’s like to answer the call of the needs in our world, creating community with those in need, and in turn, raising up a new generation of “givers.” Kristen is the author of several books--her latest being Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World. At 45 years old, my friend Kristen Welch talks about failing most of her parenting tests. But the Lord stirred the hearts of Kristen and her husband, and they started changing the way they handled “blessings” in their lives. Don’t miss the way Kristen describes the changes they’ve made in their family as they make a great effort to Raise World Changers by being World Changers themselves. A Bit About my Guest Kristen Welch is a native Texan, a wife and mom. She began blogging about her life on wearethatfamily.com nearly a decade ago. Over the years, Kristen has grown a vast following of moms who identify with her real, often funny, and always inspiring writing. In 2010, she traveled with Compassion International to Kenya on a blogging trip to write about poverty in a huge slum. That experience turned her world upside down, and as a result, she and her family founded a non-profit called Mercy House. The organization funds maternity centers for pregnant teens living in extreme poverty and manages Fair Trade Friday, a monthly subscription club that allows thousands of women in America to support impoverished women around the globe by purchasing the fairly traded product they create. Kristen is the author of multiple books, including Rhinestone Jesus: Saying Yes to God when Sparkly Safe Faith is No Longer Enough and Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World: How One Family Learned That Saying No Can Lead to Life’s Biggest Yes. Kristen’s new book, Raising World Changers, has just released! Kristen’s blog following continues to grow, and many of the readers financially support the work of Mercy House. When she and her family aren’t traveling to Kenya, Kristen and her husband and their three children live in Magnolia, Texas, where they enjoy going to football games, flea markets, trying new restaurants and working with displaced refugees in Houston. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heidistjohn/support

In fact, she’s found out that when you say yes too often, it’s not only hard on your peace of mind and your wallet―it actually puts your kids at long-term risk. Today she's joining me on the podcast (in part 2 of 2) to talk about this, because it matters how we raise the next generation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heidistjohn/support
