A podcast featuring ex and current student-athletes Mya Falcon and Aryanna Fernandes. They're having real discussions with other athletes about mental health, the burdens of the hectic lifestyle of an athlete, and asking the questions that nobody really asks.
Beyond the athlete, there is a person who is driven by their passion to excel. Furthermore, being a collegiate athlete comes with a specific desire to be the best version of yourself, both in and out of your sport. However, it can be difficult to know who you really are without the "athlete identity". In this week's episode, Mya and Aryanna sit down with Canadian & USF soccer player, Serita Thurton! They're talking about all things college recruiting, finding your identity beyond your sport, and more! ————————————————————— CHECK OUT OUR SOCIALS: Anchor: Nobody Asks Podcast Youtube: Nobody Asks Podcast Instagram: @nobodyaskspod Search ‘Nobody Asks' wherever you get your podcasts!! I KNOW… We've been gone for a while… BUT we're back for another episode
We are back with our SECOND season of Nobody Asks!
In the 15th episode, as Aryanna prepares to head back to school, Mya does her first solo episode and sits down with her Dad, Ted Falcon, giving our first parent perspective of the podcast! Ted and Mya talk about both of their athletic careers and boundaries that are set between athletes, parents, and coaches. Is there such thing as being "over-involved" in your child's sport? They also talk about why putting kids in sports is so effective, important, and continuously come back to the question of "why do we play sports?"
When we tell you that we're beyond excited for this episode... YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!!! We are so happy to be joined by a two-time Olympian and five-time NCAA Champion, Brittany MacLean! Sports can be all-consuming but when it's all over, what will you remember? Is it your times? Is it your stats? Or is it the memories you've made along the way? This week, we talked about the bigger picture of sports, the importance of a team, taking care of your physical & mental health and so much more.
You asked and we answered! This week, we wanted to sit down and answer some questions we received on Instagram (If you aren't already following us on Instagram, we HIGHLY recommend it;)). We talked about why we started a podcast, having a life outside of sport, and our inspirations. Thanks for submitting all of your questions & for tuning into another episode!
Reflection is an important part of growth. Reflecting on past experiences can help you learn from past mistakes, improve, and move forward. As always, we want to keep it real. For this week's episode, we wanted to reflect on our personal experiences. Aryanna talks about her experience of swimming during a pandemic and competing at the Canadian Olympic Trials. In addition, Mya talks about the emotions she has dealt with when watching Olympic Trials and how she coped with the inability to train "normally" when she was a competitive swimmer. We know this has been a challenging year for everyone but we hope you can take some time to reflect on everything that has happened this year. There are always positives that can be taken away and room to improve. We hope you enjoy this episode & thank you for listening
If you read the title of this episode, you might be slightly confused. BUT... please let us explain
OUR 10TH EPISODE!! Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us thus far, there's lots more coming your way
In the grand scheme of things and on the outside looking in, being a collegiate athlete seems amazing! Behind the medals and awards comes discipline, hard work, and perseverance. However, there are downsides. For many college athletes, college recruiting can be frustrating and overwhelming. Additionally, when it comes to injuries, not many people are able to understand the frustration and anxiety that comes with it. For this week's episode, we're joined by soccer player and recent Ursuline College graduate, Sinead Kappel! We talked about college recruiting in the NCAA, the power of a team, and the reality of concussions. Thank you so much to Sinead for joining us this week!!
For many athletes, it's important to find and develop a support system. These people help lift your spirits when you're discouraged and can even give you an outside perspective that you might have been missing. But what happens when that support system is actually BUILT INTO your family? This week, we are absolutely THRILLED to be joined by Varsity Blues Swimmer and Student, Everett Smith alongside OHL player and his brother, Oliver Smith. We talked about the importance of sibling/family support, the hardships of developing a relationship while pursuing high performance sports, and how to tackle internal and external pressures as an athlete. Thank you to Everett & Oliver Smith for joining us for our 8TH EPISODE!!
When things don't go as planned, what do we do? Being an athlete, unfortunately, injuries are inevitable. In addition to the constant physical pain that we endure, our mental health can also take a toll. Common reactions include the initial "freak out", anxiety, over-thinking, self-doubt, etc... But how can we adapt to unforeseen circumstances, how do we move forward, and how can we advocate for ourselves? ⠀ This week, we're joined by former swimmer and sustainable wine enthusiast, Adrienne Friesen! In this episode, we're talking about handling chronic injuries, athletic derailment, and pursuing your passions. Thank you so much to Adrienne for sitting down with us and sharing your story! ————————————————————— CHECK OUT OUR SOCIALS: YouTube: Nobody Asks Podcast Instagram: @nobodyaskspod New episodes out every Thursday @ 12pmEST!!
WE'RE BACK! Sorry we were gone...BUT we are back and better than ever! For our sixth episode, as always, we wanted to keep it real. As we continue to navigate through the current state of the Covid-19 pandemic, we wanted to talk about how we have been coping and reflected on what we've learned thus far. Alongside a year-long pandemic, most people are or have been faced with The F Word...in other words, Failure. What makes us fear failure? How can we get past the fear of failure? How do we prevent failure from controlling our lives? These are questions we tackle in our first episode back from our little break. ————————————————————— CHECK OUT OUR SOCIALS: YouTube: Nobody Asks Podcast Instagram: @nobodyaskspod New episodes out every Thursday @ 12pmEST!!
When your passion takes up so much of your time and effort, it can be difficult to imagine a life without it. Whether you are already a retired athlete or an athlete who is quickly approaching retirement, it can be difficult to make the adjustment or accept the reality. In this week's episode, we sat down with a retired athlete and high-performance coach, Meena Sharif! We talk about how an athlete can cope with life after sport, distinguishing internal and external motivators, and how to develop a reliable support system. A very special thank you to Meena for joining us on this week's episode! There's no denying the stereotype surrounding athletes. Some expect athletes to look a certain way. People feel the need to comment on our appearance saying: “You're a swimmer? Why don't you have a swimmer's body” or “You have so much muscle for a girl!” Quick question... Why is there an expectation for how athletes should look? ALSO... Why do some feel the need to comment on our eating habits? For this week's episode, we sat down with @kelisrobinsonn and talked about body image from an athlete's point of view and the side effects of scrolling through social media. We talked about our experiences with hating social media, finding the best way to fuel ourselves for our sport, and finding confidence within our own abilities. Thank you, Kelis for joining us for our FOURTH episode! What motivates you? Why do you take part in a sport that consumes all of your time and energy? From the outside looking in, some people don't understand the commitment it takes to be an elite athlete. Lifesaving Sport is a humanitarian sport that requires the skills and abilities that a lifeguard holds in a competitive environment. In this week's episode, we learn more about the sport through the eyes of Canadian Lifesaving Sport National Team Member, Jacob Miess. We discuss how difficult it can be to find motivation, surrounding yourself with positive influences, and the importance of enjoying and loving what you do. When you're so passionate about something, is it normal to lose your passion and love for it? For our first episode, we sit down and talk about how we met, our lives as student-athletes, and falling out of love with your sport. We're using our experiences to talk about powering through rough patches and how to find your passion outside of your sport.
We're sitting down with other student-athletes and asking the questions that nobody really asks. We can't wait to get started!
