Matty is back from a brief hiatus and couldn't be more excited to welcome one of his childhood best friends to the podcast: up-and-coming country music artist Ben Durand (@ben_durand_music). In this heartfelt and hilarious episode, Matty and Ben take a trip down memory lane, revisiting their early days performing together on stage — including the moment Ben was once told “not to sing” during his first production of Fiddler on the Roof (talk about a plot twist). From defying the odds to make the Auburn University football team in his junior year, to teaching himself how to play guitar and chasing his dream of becoming a country singer-songwriter, Ben opens up about his creative journey. He shares how personal struggles shaped his music, the realities of the music industry grind, and what it really takes to stay motivated as an independent artist. This episode is a powerful, funny, and inspiring catch-up between two small-town best friends — and a must-listen for fans of country music, storytelling, and chasing big dreams.Follow us on Tik Tok and Instagram: @mattydurkin and @thepopcornerpod on Instagram Hosted on Acast. In this episode, I connect with Michel Durand-Wood, the Elmwood Guy behind the popular blog Dear Winnipeg, for a conversation about his efforts to engage his community in discussions surrounding municipal finance, channeling a Strong Towns approach, and mobilizing a coalition of neighborhood groups to take immediate action on the streets with the city's (reluctant) support. We also talk about his new book, You'll Pay For This, which is part of a multi-volume effort called The City Project.Helpful Links (note that some may include affiliate links to help me support the channel):
Ivy might be the least likely band to release new music in 2025. After the loss of leader Adam Schlesinger to COVID early in the pandemic, the band had no choice but to end things. Luckily, surviving members Dominique Durand, Andy Chase and Bruce Driscoll came together to flesh out some songs Adam hadn't finished and released the new album Traces of You recently as a proper tribute to their former bandmate. All three of them join us this week to explain how the album came together and if there will be more, what it was like competing for Adam's attention with Fountains of Wayne, and everyone's other side projects. Ivy was special. It's a shame they and Adam are gone, but we have some incredible records to remember them by including Traces of You. Send us a textWhole body MRI is changing prevention from a guess into something you can actually see. Dr. Kevin White talks with Dr. Dan Durand, Johns Hopkins trained radiologist and Chief Medical Officer at Prenuvo, about how full body scans are catching silent problems early: from fatty liver and visceral fat to aneurysms, early cancers, and brain changes linked to cognitive decline and dementia. They unpack how Prenuvo's model pairs deep imaging, multiomic data, and real conversations with clinicians so patients do not just get a data dump, but a clear plan for what to do next.“Think of a whole body MRI as a home inspection for your health: you want to find the hidden leaks before the ceiling caves in.” – Dr. Dan DurandYou'll hear: • Why traditional screening only looks at a few organs and what whole body MRI adds • How often Prenuvo finds serious issues early and what that means for real people • The link between visceral fat, brain volume, and long term cognitive health • How AI is being used to measure brain regions, muscle, and fat with precision • Why reassurance from a clean scan can be just as powerful as a life saving catch • How to think about timing, HSA dollars, and making this part of your prevention planLearn more about Prenuvo and their whole body MRI at prenuvo.com.

Jody Durand, author of Country Boy Soul, shares a heartbreaking chapter of his life—navigating a failing business, a troubled marriage, the sudden loss of his mother, and ultimately, bankruptcy. In 1999, with no experience outside of farming, Jody was invited by a friend to help manage a U.S. call center selling cell phones, with the promise of becoming a shareholder. Trusting the vision, he invested $120,000—money borrowed from relatives and secured against his future. Despite early red flags, like being denied access to company sites and relying on a single partner for all leads, he pressed on with hope. The business stumbled from the start. Sales were dismal, payments from the partner company were delayed and short, and Jody poured in more money—including his retirement savings—just to keep the doors open. Within months, he found himself drained financially and emotionally, stuck in a cycle of diminishing returns.Yet even in the midst of collapse, Jody eventually recognized he didn't have to keep digging a deeper hole. His story, though filled with hardship, is also one of redemption and resilience. This is an episode you won't want to miss.Morgan FriedmanJody's WebsiteJody's LinkedInJody's InstagramJody's Facebook

In this episode of Durand on Demand, Dave breaks down one of the most overlooked leadership skills: credibility. You don't earn influence just because you have authority — you earn it because people believe you. Whether you're leading a team, building a marriage, or trying to close a sale, credibility determines whether people listen, follow, or tune you out.In this conversation, Dave reveals: ✅ Why people stop listening (and don't even realize it) ✅ The four habits that make someone instantly credible ✅ How to back your words with reality — not just rhetoric ✅ The secret connection between humility and influenceIf you want to communicate with clarity, earn trust quickly, and lead with lasting impact, this episode will help you rebuild the foundation that every great relationship — personal or professional — depends on.

After being the first candidate to declare, the campaign of Emma Durand-Wood has knocked on every door in Elmwood-East Kildonan. In Episode 52, she tells about her platform, her background in urban issues, and her vision for the ward as the October 25th vote draws near. A writer and editor by trade, Emma Durand-Wood moved to Elmwood in 2008 from Vancouver. While not being involved in politics there, her rise through community organizing in Winnipeg is similar to the BC progressive playbook. She's been endorsed by Shaun Loney, who finished fourth in the 2022 Mayoral election as the far left-wing choice. It appears he's the only one from that race to publicly endorse a successor to Coun. Jason Schreyer. Loney has vowed to put together a slate of like-minded people for next year's election. Part 1- Durand-Wood says that at the doorstep, a "common set of concerns" emerge. She recounts what she heard about crime, homelessness, the emergence of Transit complaints, and "a lot" of people want civic investment in youth programs. She tells Marty Gold about her own experiences living in the ward and how long it took to get a gang house shut down. "Have the police been effective? They've been very very busy... we need to take tackling crime as a community effort."10.00 - "We can't have this chaos of encampments."Durand -Woods hadn't considered the idea of establishing a monitored encampment at the Legislature. She advocates for more grassroots approaches like Elmwood Unity Walk to help get people out of encampments, but "we can't run everyone into jail."A Transit user, the new routing and schedule problems "does seem like a pretty big oversight" by city councillors, as her area "got a downgrade in service." "The smarter thing to do is the rehabilitation" for the Louise Bridge, rather than construct a new one, citing "a systemic problem" that's leading to "massive" deficits in the civic budget. 24.55 Part 2- Durand-Wood describes her personal background in the west before moving here for affordability and to start a family. She became involved in Elmwood issues by opposing a pawn shop licence, then helped re-establish a residents association in Glen Elm, then initiated a tree planting coalition. 36.00- With strong support from prominent members of the bike lobby and the 30km speed limit advocates- two groups that disrupted council proceedings in the last year - Durand-Wood is asked about whether their extremism and rhetoric aligns with her values. She disavows the political violence seemingly espoused by a prominent campaigner for her, who posted that the Charlie Kirk vigil at the Legislature was like "a Klan rally." 46.00- Citing a petition drive in EK showing support of 80-90% for lower residential speed limits, she maintains "it actually is not an extreme idea." Durand-Wood supports infill housing, and is asked about whether opposition to zoning changes because the demand for housing is rooted in mass immigration is also "not an extreme position". While she shows sympathy for their concerns, she says "Our neighborhoods have been kind of locked in amber... we need more people living in our existing neighborhoods" to ease fiscal pressures.Voters can get more information on her campaign at emmadurandwood.ca****- Go to the ActionLine "City" tab to find every podcast interview with the seven candidates.- Read our by-election preview column in the Winnipeg Sun: Home stretch starts in Elmwood-East Kildonanby-election- For sponsor or advertising inquiries, to contribute to our Season Six Funding Drive, send feedback or story tips, email martygoldlive@gmail.com

PREVIEW: Deadly Clashes Between Pakistan Army and Taliban Along the Unrecognized Durand Line GUEST NAME: Bill Roggio (Foundation for Defense of Democracies, The Long War Journal) 100-WORD SUMMARY: John Batchelor asks Bill Roggio to describe the challenging terrain where reports indicate hundreds have died in clashes between the Pakistani army and the Taliban's army along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The area, which includes both mountainous and desert country, spans hundreds of miles. A major cause of tension is that the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban do not recognize the Durand Line, which serves as the official border. Both sides have set up border outposts, and the location of these outposts sometimes shifts depending on local circumstances.
In this episode of Durand on Demand, Dave breaks down the five hidden forces that derail success — in business, leadership, and everyday life.Drawing from decades of experience coaching entrepreneurs and building companies, Dave explains why so many people start strong but never finish — and how to fix it.What you'll learn:Why excitement without purpose burns out fastHow “majoring in the minors” kills momentumWhy shortcuts always catch up to youThe danger of self-deceit and ego in leadershipThe truth about the real work–reward relationshipWhether you're growing a business, leading a team, or working on yourself, this episode will help you identify the blind spots holding you back — and replace them with habits that lead to lasting success.
In this episode of Durand on Demand, Dave breaks down three qualities everyone wants — wisdom, intelligence, and smarts — and shows how they're similar, how they're different, and how you can grow in each.Too often people settle for raw IQ or quick wit, but miss the deeper grounding of wisdom. Without it, even the brightest minds can lose their way. I'll share:✅ Why wisdom begins with ordering your life toward truth and purpose ✅ The difference between natural intelligence and how you actually develop it ✅ How “smarts” combine both wisdom and intelligence — and why pattern recognition is key ✅ The danger of bias (even Einstein fell into it) and how humility unlocks growth ✅ How to apply this in your daily life to make better decisions, lead well, and live with clarityBy the end, you'll see why it's not enough to be intelligent — you need wisdom to direct it and practical smarts to apply it.
Dave unpacks how pride blinds athletes while humility — “precision truth about yourself” — fuels growth. He shares why bench players can be more valuable than starters, how relationships with coaches, teammates, and even family affect performance, and why psychological talent often matters more than physical skill.✅ What You'll Learn:Why humility is the hidden talent that fuels championsHow relationships shape athletic and team performanceWhy pride and “my truth” distort growth and clarityHow bench players can play a critical role in winningWhy psychological talent separates long-term winners from the restWhether you're an athlete or part of a team in business or life, this episode will show you how humility and clarity unlock true performance.

In this episode of Durand on Demand, Dave unpacks the most powerful force in the world: decision. Every part of life flows from the choices we make — but it's not just the primary decisions (to take a job, get married, or start something) that matter. It's the secondary decisions and recommitments that determine whether we thrive or fail.Recorded live, Dave illustrates this through the story of King David — a leader who chose comfort over adventure and fell into folly — and shows how the same dynamic plays out in our own lives. The path forward, he explains, lies in the virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. This talk also explores the universal desires of every human being — goodness, beauty, truth, and unity — and why denying truth or lowering standards leads to distortion and decline. At its core, this is a call to live a life of adventure, virtue, and reality.✅ What You'll Learn:Why decision is the most powerful force in your lifeThe difference between primary and secondary decisionsWhy comfort leads to folly and adventure fosters growthHow prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance shape optimizationThe universal human desires: goodness, beauty, truth, and unityWhy rejecting objective truth destroys clarity and characterThis episode is both a wake-up call and a roadmap: choose adventure, embrace virtue, and ground yourself in truth.

In this episode of Durand on Demand, recorded live with a group of collegiate leaders, Dave takes a deeper dive into personality optimization—focusing on extraversion, agreeableness, and how the Big Five test really works.Forget the clichés like “listen twice as much as you speak.” Dave explains why communication depends on context, why extraversion isn't an either/or label but a spectrum, and how your natural tendencies can be shaped by experiences. He also unpacks agreeableness: why being too agreeable leads to people-pleasing and lowered standards, while being too disagreeable creates conflict and isolation. The goal? Learning to optimize these traits at the center—where virtue and effectiveness meet.✅ What You'll Learn:The real formula for balancing listening and speakingWhy extraversion is a spectrum, not a binaryHow past experiences can distort personality expressionThe dangers of excessive agreeableness (a.k.a. “suicidal philanthropy”)Why lowering standards always drags leadership downThis short but practical episode will help you see personality optimization in action—and why finding the right balance makes all the difference in leadership and life.
Before this year, Ivy last released new music in 2011 with the album All Hours. Now, 14 years later, Ivy has reassembled to share Traces of You, which came out September 5 on Bar/None Records. What makes this album extra special is that it includes parts from one of the late members, Adam Schlessinger, who died from complications of COVID-19 in 2020. The other surviving members — Andy Chase, Dominique Durand, and Bruce Driscoll — wrote 10 brand-new songs that all incorporate parts from Schlesinger. KEXP’s Roddy Nikpour spoke with Ivy about their collaborative approach, how Chase and Durand’s marriage may or may not be affected by a love of Tetris and a self-described “flute fetish,” and ultimately how the band had fun putting this record together. “We couldn’t just leave [the demos] in a storage room,” Durand says in the interview. “We had to do something about it.” When it comes to writing around parts from their late bandmate, Chase adds, “You try every idea. That’s the wonderful thing about the digital era — there’s no limit. We pretty much exhaust all our creativity on every song, and then it’s a matter of subtraction.” This is why the band adopted a “less is more” approach. “There were songs where we would try to add a bunch of stuff and then realize we’d gone too far,” Driscoll says. “We’d realize that the first thing we’d done was the best thing.” Related: Janice Headley talked with the band in 2023 about one of their iconic reissued albums, Apartment Life, which originally came out in 1997. In this episode of Durand on Demand, Dave explains why one personality trait consistently outpaces talent, intellect, and even charisma as the leading indicator of long-term success: conscientiousness.Being conscientious doesn't just mean being neat or organized — it's about reliability, self-mastery, and the discipline to follow through. Dave unpacks how this trait impacts relationships, careers, and leadership, why it's so difficult to be around people who lack it, and why those who choose conscientious behavior despite natural inclinations demonstrate the highest level of virtue.Along the way, he highlights the critical difference between making judgments and being judgmental, shows how empathy functions as a leadership “superpower,” and uses real-life examples (from temperaments to traffic jams) to illustrate how virtue transforms raw temperament into trustworthy leadership.✅ What You'll Learn:Why conscientiousness is the #1 indicator of career and relationship successThe difference between judgment and judgmentalism in leadershipHow empathy helps you understand without excusing errorsWhy acting against your natural temperament is a mark of high virtueThe hidden motivators that drive conscientious people to actThis episode is both practical and challenging — a reminder that true success doesn't come from talent alone, but from the discipline to be reliable, virtuous, and consistent.
