Send us a textBack in September, our podcast featured an emotional interview with Hazel van der Werken, a grieving mother who is on a mission to slash wait times at Ontario emergency departments. Her son, Finlay van der Werken, died from sepsis and pneumonia in February 2024 — after waiting more than eight hours to be treated at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. “Everybody knows how bad and how long the wait times are, yet we seem to be complacent because nothing has changed,” Hazel told the podcast. “This is something that has been progressively getting worse, and for us as Finlay's parents, it doesn't even feel like a choice. It feels like we have a responsibility to help with that change and to help make sure that things are reformed.”Along with demanding a coroner's inquest, the family is calling on Doug Ford's government to introduce legislation — “Finlay's Law” — that would establish maximum emergency room wait times for children. They have also launched a lawsuit against Halton Healthcare Services, which operates the Oakville hospital, alleging the facility had an “inadequate system” in place to ensure patients like Finlay were seen in an appropriate amount of time. (In a statement of defence, the hospital operator denies any wrongdoing and says staff provided “reasonable care” that night.)Has the system improved at all since Finlay's tragic death? It doesn't appear so.According to data analyzed by CBC Marketplace and the Montreal Economic Institute, close to 500,000 Canadians actually walked out of ERs last year without being seen by a doctor. Ontario had the lowest rate among provinces, but the data still reveals that approximately 5 per cent of Ontario patients left an emergency room without seeing a doctor in 2024.A separate report reveals another alarming statistic: 23,746. That is the number of Canadian patients (at least) who died last fiscal year while on government waiting lists for surgeries or diagnostic scans. The data, obtained via freedom of information by the think tank SecondStreet.org, further shows that 355 patients in Ontario died while waiting for cardiac surgery or a cardiac procedure. On tonight's episode of Closer Look, we revisit parts of our conversation with Hazel van der Werken. You can watch the full interview HERE.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.

It's the best of BMitch & Finlay and friends, as Denton, Lynnell, and Steve Czaban have filled in at times this week! On the field, we wonder if the Commanders' offense has become too predictable, if the defense has gotten better or if Miami's offense is just that bad, and if Jayden should bother coming back this year. Off the field, Joe Jacoby is a Hall of Fame semifinalist, and in the future, the Commanders will be playing internationally again in 2026!

This episode of the Libertarian Christian Podcast welcomes Finlay Beach. Beach is the author of the Managed Paranoia series, a near-future Sci-Fi thriller series that weaves libertarian ideals and Christian values into a gripping narrative of a dystopian world shaped by an overreaching post-pandemic government. Beach shares how he balances his day job with his passion for fiction writing, emphasizing character-driven storytelling over preachy ideology. The conversation explores the power of fiction to subtly convey complex ideas, the danger of losing the story to a political agenda, and how libertarian creatives can effectively use their gifts--even if it means not quitting their day jobs. https://patreon.com/marieshadowsHey friends,Let's get into it. I need to be honest: right now, Konosuke is not my IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, and it's not just about him. There's a bigger picture here—how NJPW operates, how talent is booked, and how the prestige of the belt has been handled.Konosuke is strong, can hit hard, and he knows how to get a reaction. He can point at the hard cam, call himself the alpha, and fans will respond—but fans don't always know why they like him. They see power moves, muscles, and flashes of “charisma,” and that's enough for them to cheer. But that's shallow. Being a champion isn't just about looking cool or generating hype; it's about storytelling, psychology, and committing to the company and its audience.Right now, Konosuke's matches are mediocre at best. He relies on power moves, strikes, and big spots, but he no-sells, doesn't work psychology, and doesn't evolve over time. He claims he wants to “enhance the value of professional wrestling through battles” and show unprecedented fights—but we've seen it before. He's doing the same things, and there's no improvement. It's not being an antagonist to stay stubborn; it's just being stuck in your ways.Fans on the fence want to see growth, want to become fans because they can watch someone improve, adapt, and become a complete wrestler. Konosuke has time to do this, but right now he's just doing the same stuff with no nuance or selling. That's why he's not my champion.Let's talk about the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship itself. This is supposed to be the pinnacle of professional wrestling, and historically, it's earned respect through commitment and storytelling. Moxley tried to carry it; it failed because he didn't have that commitment. Zack Sabre Jr. held it; he's technical, committed, and embodies the craft. But Konosuke? He wants to take the belt everywhere globally, which is fine—but it can't replace commitment to NJPW and its fans. The cheers and boos he gets in Japan are not endorsements of greatness—they're reactions to the system. NJPW relies on ticket sales, attendance, and fan engagement across the Japanese tour circuit. A champion who isn't committed to the company undermines that structure, and the numbers reflect it. If your IWGP Champion isn't fully present, the whole ecosystem suffers. It's not just about Konosuke. Finlay is one example of a proven wrestler who gets overlooked despite delivering quality matches and having the skill to hold the title. Goto is another—he had the chance to elevate the belt globally, but NJPW's booking and media priorities sidelined him. The choices to put the belt on someone who hasn't earned it on a deeper level have real consequences for the promotion, its storylines, and its fans.Evil is a case study in contrast: committed, company-minded, proven over time. If he had won the G1, the title would have been in the hands of someone who understands what it means to carry it responsibly. Konosuke? Not yet. He has flashes of potential, but the foundation isn't there. This all comes back to commitment. AEW, NJPW, and the global wrestling ecosystem are very different. You can make money and hype elsewhere, but the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship requires allegiance, storytelling, and respect for history. Being flashy isn't enough.Konosuke can still change and earn it. There's room for improvement—selling, psychology, pacing, character work—but right now, he's just powerful, loud, and inconsistent. That's why he's not my champion, and why fans, myself included, are hesitant to call him a legitimate IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.Fans, this is your space to weigh in. Tell me:Can Konosuke evolve into a true champion?Should NJPW reconsider how titles are awarded in AEW crossovers? How do you feel about Finlay and other overlooked talent? We need discussion that goes beyond the hype, beyond the AEW spotlight, and really examines what makes wrestling meaningful.

My guest this week is Lorraine Finlay - Australia's Human Rights Commissioner, and a leader committed to advancing human rights at every level. Lorraine works to ensure that human rights are not just principles on paper, but lived and experienced in our communities, workplaces, and homes, while also shaping policies and practices at a national and systemic level. This episode - recorded live amidst the hustle and bustle of Convene 2025, Social Traders' annual conference - is the third in our Short Takes on Purpose series, created in collaboration with Social Traders, where each fortnight we explore powerful ideas and practical insights from leaders driving impact through business. You might notice a few audio discrepancies throughout this conversation (due to being live from the event), but we promise it's worth tuning in for Lorraine's powerful insights and reflections. Together, we explore her journey as a leader in human rights, how she balances influencing large-scale change with fostering everyday respect and fairness, and the lessons she's learned about leadership, empathy, and recognising the progress already being made - even as more work lies ahead.
