"Working Hard is a Talent in itself" says Laurent Carol, Deputy Technical Director of the Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee, and former Olympic swimmer. In the first of two shows on the Olympics, my guests this week are: - Laurent Carnol - Deputy Technical Director, Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee; Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois (COSL), former Olympic swimmer - Dr Yves Dominicy - Sport Statistician - Loïc Hoscheit - ALAD Director - anti-doping agency Luxembour - Marie Muller - former Olympic athlete - Judo Laurent Carnol is the Deputy Technical Director of the Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee; Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois (COSL), and a former Olympian swimmer himself. Laurent took part in Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. In London, Laurent got to the semi finals in 200m breaststroke and was a finalist several times in the European Championships for the same event. Aside from his own successful career as an elite athlete, Laurent was a teacher at the Sport Lycée in Luxembourg, a lecturer at Lunex University and Dual Career Coordinator at the Luxembourg Institute for High Performance in Sport. Laurent talks to us about the selection process which decides what delegation will eventually be going to the Olympics in Paris this summer. The qualification pathways and athlete preparation requires enormous effort not just from the athlete themselves, but also from the team around that athlete. Yves Dominicy is a sport statistician and has written two books with Christophe Ley: Science meets Sports: when statistics are more than numbers Statistics Meets Sports: What We Can Learn from Sports Data Sport analytics collects data to try to understand patterns therein. For instance, it is used for ranking and prediction, talent identification, scheduling and injury prevention. Machine learning is now being used in tennis to profile the emotional expressions of tennis players and link that to performance. Yves also mentions that tennis rankings may become more accurate if based on serve / return etc. rather than points. During Covid-19 in 2020, the International Swimming League organised a whole month of races providing an intense, short period to analyse the effect of multiple races on the performance of different profiles. The use of data analytics is extremely valuable to prevent injury. It is now possible to run risk profiles to plan around potential injury points for a person. Loïc Hoscheit is the Director of ALAD, Agence Luxembourgeoise antidopage. Luxembourg's independent anti-doping agency tasked with supervising the country's most high-level athletes and competitions; they are tasked with ensuring Luxembourg sends out clean athletes. ALAD also offers guidance to all athletes with the potential to qualify for the Olympics and ensures a solid testing programme is carried out prior to the Games within this group. The rules are complex, and keep changing. Naturally there is often a cloud of uncertainty around medication, but also supplements. Marie Müller, a judoka (judo player), received a wild card from the IOC in 2008 where she finished 9th in the Beijing Games. Between 2009 and 2012, Marie entered the world top 16 for judo in her category and qualified for the London Games in 2012. There she lost in a dramatic fight for bronze and finished 5th.Marie's entire career was overshadowed by injury, which ultimately made the decision to retire from judo for her in 2016. Marie and Laurent both talk about not being able to do their sport since they retired, but have turned to other sport. Marie also talks about the pressure of weight in her sport. https://teamletzebuerg.lu/ https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-5856-4 https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-9273-5 https://www.alad.lu/

Gute Unterhaltung! News 2:13 Wettkämpfe 22:18 Interview: Lukas Märtens 29:06 Wissenschaft 65:50

On this week's Propulsion Swimming Podcast we are speaking to one of the success stories of this year's International Swimming League season, Canada's Ingrid Wilm! After being selected to the LA Current as an undrafted rookie, Ingrid Wilm finished the year as ISL's 11th-highest scorer point scorer and produced the fastest 100m Backstroke SC time of the year! She was LA's top female by 50 points, and she was also just three points shy of Tom Shields for the club's top overall points scorer. We talk about her swimming journey so far, how ISL helped her massively with the mental side of the sport, and how she translates the fastest 100m Back SC to the long course format of the pool! ✔️ SUBSCRIBE to Propulsion Swimming: http://bit.ly/PropulsionSwimming

We sat down with Stuart Coventry, the CEO of the new Australian Swimming League. Coventry breaks down why this endeavor was even taken in the first place and how he sees it can play in nicely with the International Swimming League as well. Reported by Loretta Race The Australian Swimming League (ASL) recently announced that its planned launch event slated for October will be delayed due to coronavirus-related complications. According to the league, ‘the decision to push back the timing of this launch event was made with an abundance of caution to prioritize the health and safety plus provide clarity to officials and participants, considering the challenges associated with movement within Australia. In July we reported how the brand new ASLrepresents a national professional league whose inaugural series of competitions will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022. ASL is privately owned and funded and will run the competition with the support of Swimming Australia. James E chats to Joy McNaughten, mother of Olympic Champion swimmer Duncan Scott about the making of a champion, the cost and the frustrations of the lack of media coverage for a sport in which Scotland excels. Scots are 8% of the Uk population yet make up 14% of the British Olympic Team, 21% of the Olympic swimming team and achieved 25% of the medals. Yet the sport barely gets any coverage in mainstream media. Next on the sporting calendar is the International Swimming League which you can follow on youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBoEDuW0Lg7AmCkts1j8LyQ and next year will be another busy year with European Championships and Commonwealth Games. You can find out more about the Scottish Swimming team here https://www.scottishswimming.com/compete/swimming/national-squads.aspx Duncan Scott is the ONLY British Olympian to win 4 medals in a single games and he is still only 24 . He is also an ambassador for the Learn to Swim programme - an essential life skill for Scottish children in a country with 90% of the UK's fresh water supply. Find out more here https://www.scottishswimming.com/learn-to-swim.aspx We are grateful to Joy for joining us to help promote Scottish sport and once again, our congratulations to Duncan and all those who took part in the Olympic Games 2021. #DuncanScott #ScottishSports #Olympics2021

Austin Surhoff is a professional swimmer (and current free agent) training to make the International Swimming League. He won the 200 IM at NCAA Championships back in 2010 while swimming at the University of Texas. He grew up swimming for Bob Bowman at NBAC and would ultimately return to swim alongside Michael Phelps and Chase Kalisz to train for the 2016 Rio Games, placing 8th in the 200 IM. Fast forward to 2021, he just finished 21st and 29th in the 50 and 100 Freestyles, respectively, at US Olympic Trials. Best times for him. He's gone from being a 200 IMer/Backstroker/Freestyler to a 22.5 50 Freestyler. He talks about how he trains now, taking a little bit of everything from everyone that he has worked with along the way. He has coached at Johns Hopkins and as a volunteer with UVA and Todd DeSorbo. Austin discusses the culture at Texas under Eddie Reese and Kris Kubick, as well as potential successor, Wyatt Collins. He dives into what it was like to train with the GOAT for two years leading up to 2016. And, overcoming some mental health struggles along the way. Enjoy! Laura’s guest on the podcast this week is World Championship gold medalist swimmer, Michael Andrew. Turning pro at 14, Michael broke numerous National Age Group Records in his teens, and over the course of his career, he has broken Junior World Records. Along the way, however, he and his parents have also received a lot of backlash for the choices that they made throughout this stellar career. In today’s episode, Michael talks about all of this and so much more in a conversation that is both enlightening and inspiring. Michael begins by sharing what he is doing in Turkey these days, and about his exciting involvement with the New York Breakers and the International Swimming League. He then goes on to describe his unique career in swimming, the role his parents continue to play in it, the ‘haters’ they had to deal with, and his family’s willingness to share all that they have learned with anyone wishing to learn. Michael also shares his nutrition regimen, how he balances new training techniques with establishing routines, his vlogs and love of technology, and an exciting new venture that he and his dad are working on. Woven throughout is Michael’s deep commitment to his faith and the prominent role it plays in his life and career. As you will discover, Michael Andrew is most certainly a superstar in the world of competitive swimming, but he is so very much more than that, and he shares it all with you here today. Episode Highlights: · What Michael is doing in Turkey these days · The New York Breakers and the International Swimming League (ISL) · ISL’s agreement with CBS Sports · Michael’s unique career in swimming · His parents’ involvement and influence in his career · Other people’s attitudes towards his career · Their willingness to share their methods with others · How God has blessed his journey · Dealing with ‘haters’ · What he has done since COVID started · 2019 as a season of learning about intentionality · Michael’s nutrition regimen · Balancing trying new training techniques with establishing routines · His mindset preparing for Tokyo · Michael’s faith and how it plays out in his daily life · Laura’s experience with depending on God · Michael’s vlogs and his love of technology · The project he and his dad have been working on Quotes: “It’s kind of like we’re in our own little bubble anyway.” “My entire swim career, we’ve always been very family oriented.” “I am a Team Captain, owner, and athlete of New York Breakers.” “This league really just gives athletes an opportunity beyond the Olympics.” “It takes all of the…exciting events, condenses it into two hours of extreme action – the fastest athletes in the world going head-to-head, scoring points, and money’s on the line.” “Why would we do that if we don’t believe in the way they train, we don’t believe in all the negative things that come from those experiences? Like, why not just do it differently?” “It was really interesting to see over the years how people’s perception of us had changed because we were consistent in who we were and what we stood for.” “We have more supporters than we ever had haters, really, and it’s just cool to see how…faithful God has been through that, in us kind of sticking to who we are and not backing away from it.” “It feels like my career’s just beginning at 21.” “I’ve been super blessed with a family that has supported me from the beginning.” “They’re judging from a very warped picture.” “We don’t live to earn man’s approval, really. We’re here doing what we do to the greatest of our ability, but also to glorify God and what he has given us.” “I never want to be the athlete that kind of feels that I have to restrict myself from a lot of the fun things in order to perform.” “I think it’s so important for athletes to have clear goals and things that they’re working towards.” “Your body can use oxygen more efficiently when you are keto-adapted.” “How do we rewire the brain and change these habits?” “At the end of the day, it’s just swimming…I know God loves me for who I am.” “I just need to show up and race and let God handle the details.” “I don’t live a performance-based identity, but I live a purpose-based identity.” “The closest you get to God is usually in the hardest times.” “We’re creating a subscription platform where we can just give people everything.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold homepage: http://thepursuitofgold.com/ Mental Training: https://www.laurawilkinson.com/learn Laura’s Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lala_the_diver Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheLauraWilkinson Connect with Michael: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/michaelandrew4 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/swimmermichael/ International Swimming League: https://isl.global/

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Rob Koehler, director general of Global Athlete. A former World Anti-Doping Agency deputy director general, Rob Koehler is leading this "international athlete-led movement that will inspire and lead positive change in world sport, and collectively address the balance of power between athletes and administrators," according to its web site. We spoke with him by phone Monday. While he agreed that Global Athlete is an advocacy organization, he noted that it is developing into much more than that in collectively dealing with athletes' problems and fighting for their rights. "When they have problems, when they have issues, we either help them from behind, or we join together in terms of making statements and pushing things. We've provided legal support. We've provided assistance in so many different areas, that right now it's advocacy. But we see in the future that being a collective group to stand together on issues collectively that are one hundred percent athlete-supported and athlete-driven, we'll start to make change," he said. Yet there still is enormous resistance from the powers-that-be in world sport to these efforts. "One of the things that, it's mind-boggling to me, and I still cannot understand," he continued, "why sport governance and sporting organizations do not see the benefit in bringing athletes along with them and together as a collective to try to make sport stronger, safer. And when you have collective athlete engagement and collective bargaining, you end up with growing the sport, not limiting it." Most of the focus of Global Athlete now is on the rights of athletes in the Olympic movement. But there are also major popular movements and mass sentiment in many places around the world against those areas hosting the Olympics and other mega-events. One way of addressing that, he said, is to guarantee that the athletes are part of the process that goes into deciding just what the Olympics and these major events do. "If athletes were a part of the decision-making and were a part of shaping what the Olympics should look like in the future, or in a World Cup, you all of a sudden have brand recognition, so you've attached your own brand to that brand when you become part of it. And when you become part of something and you want to see it in a better spot, you're going to be held accountable for it," he said. "Money has overshadowed what the Olympic brand used to be," he said. What is needed is "a new type of approach and a new type of Olympics that meets all those, that addresses the criticisms that are out there." The latest chapter in the Russian state-sponsored doping scandal involves Russian authorities providing doctored and fabricated data and evidence about the findings of the Moscow laboratory's doping test results to the World Anti-Doping Agency. He said he and Global Athlete would support a "ban of Russia at the Olympics, to try to bring about some institutional change in the country. Because if the leaders of the sports can continue to manipulate and manage things and not have any dire consequences when they go to the Games, when are we going to see change inside?" We also discussed how the funding they receive from the FairSport foundation is not attached to Global Athlete's decision-making, how Global Athlete has helped athletes in sports including karate and weightlifting, the development of alternative organizations outside the Olympic movement such as the International Swimming League, the plans of Global Athlete for the future, and much, much more.
