Joe Prusaitis started out directing road races, and after awhile realized the trail is where his heart was. He (along with many others) shifted over to trail running in the ultra running boom of the late 90's and early 2000's. While he admits to one simple advantage he had in helping his early success (being one of the first trail races to offer online registration), he also talks about how treating people the way he wanted to be treated helped him keep runners coming back. Race directing is no easy task, but Joe has been doing it for over 20 years and shares all about the memorable experiences it brought to his life. Ahilan Ponnusamy never ran a step. The only exercise he ever did was an occasional cricket game. After being diagnosed with a severe and rare cancer he had to have his stomach removed. Ahilan felt like he needed a way to get rid of the toxins from all the medication he was taking during his recovery. He started on a mission to complete his first half marathon. He found out someone with the same condition had run a marathon, so that be came his next goal. Then a 50k. Then a 50 miler just this last year. Now he is chasing his first 100k and beyond to raise money and awareness for this type of cancer. What is just as inspiring as his journey is his mental outlook. He is very humble and grateful for the opportunities given to him, and you can hear this and how he made it through each of these race challenges in this episode.

Jeff Knight and James Dodds are both old co-workers. We all coached together in a previous life, but have remained friends to this day. Jeff works at Under Armor as a Senior Manager of Exercise and Nutrition, and James works part time as a coach and virtual coach at Rogue Running. Over the past few weeks we have done some video chats on how runners are adapting and what interesting shifts they are seeing. I got them to open up a bit more on what challenges they are seeing across the board with their runners and clients, but also what things are helping. What are the positives we are seeing out of the pandemic? We dive into it all in this episode.

Trail Roots member Kris K shares a recent experience where his wife to be suffers a heart attack and is without oxygen for an extended time. She is put on life-support, and eventually removed from it, as family decides to say their goodbyes. She comes back to life a 2nd time. Because the extended period without oxygen she suffers brain damage and is unable to remember Kris. Over time her parents decide Kris shouldn't be allowed to visit her in the rehab center and he is cut off. Being that they weren't married Kris is basically powerless. He turns to running and his community to help him get through He is still currently working his way through this, and had a really cool outlook, and is still holding hope. Running next to Kris I would have never imagined he had dealt with such a difficult time. I pried a little after asking questions and he opened up to me. This reminded me that we never know what our neighbor's struggles may be. Just lending a hand or an ear can make a difference.
