The second hour of The FAN Morning Show live from the Joe Carter Classic Golf Tournament begins with hosts Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning diving deeper into the Oilers' Game 5 win alongside former Maple Leafs GM, Gord Stellick! He shares his take on Connor McDavid's dominance and the feeling in the Panthers' locker room after dropping the last two games, before discussing his recent piece in the Toronto Star about the Leafs' off-season plans. Next up, former Maple Leaf Rick Vaive chats about his experience at the Joe Carter Classic, McDavid's play on hockey's biggest stage, and Auston Matthews' goal-scoring display this past season (23:15). Later on, the co-chairs of the tournament, James Dodds, Senior Vice President of TD Bank, and Pierre Frappier, President and Owner of AMJ Campbell, talk about what makes this event special, the 15 years its been taking place, their relationship with Joe Carter and Joe's connection with the city of Toronto (37:10). Ben and Brent wrap up the hour with your daily dose of the Wake and Rake! James Dodds and I had a little bit of fun with this episode, and we hope you enjoy it. We riff on 6 topics that have been the object of our recent coaching curiosities or ruminations. The topics range from the limits of easy aerobic volume to maxing out in-run carbs and to the science (and potentially hocus pocus) of advanced recovery techniques (and more). We hope you enjoy this one! To redeem the offer from this episode's sponsor, use the code ROGUE for 10% off at Janji.com.
James Dodds joins me to help me recap a tough day at the Houston Marathon for me. It was my big goal race, but it didn't go how I hoped it would. Fortunately, the reasons for that are crystal clear, which I break down in the episode. I am still very proud of my day and even more hungry for what's to come. Thank you to everyone for your support in this journey. I will rest, recover, and get back to work! To redeem the offer from this episode's sponsor, use the code ROGUE15 for 15% off at Janji.com.
Many have asked about how my training for the Houston Marathon is going, and this episode is your answer. James Dodds joins the show to interview me on my training progress. You will hear that I still don't know what the outcome will be, but I feel really good about my progress to this point. We talk about my process and how I've felt along the way with lessons that are already taking shape. I think there are takeaways in here for everyone and hope this inspires you on your journey. The topic of gun violence in the United States is a highly-charged and emotional issue. As part of an effort to discuss the issue, an eclectic group of award-winning authors come together to craft American Roulette, a novel that brings eight people to a mall food court, on a day they think will be like any other. The collaborative efforts of these writers takes a different tack to examine the tension, dread and action of a novel with the real-life question for all readers: could this happen to me or someone I love? Two Sunbury Press authors involved in the project join Sunbury Press founder and publisher Lawrence Knorr on this podcast to talk about the subject of gun violence, what brought them all together, and what they hope to accomplish with a book that garnered rave reviews from the outset. Sherry Knowlton is no stranger to the BookSpeak Network, as host of the Milford House mystery podcast, and the author of several mystery works, including the Alexa Williams series. Pat LaMarche is an author, political activist, historian and homeless shelter director. They are joined by Matthew Best, Robert Bradshaw, Andy Carey, James Dodds, Cheryl Dunn Bychek, Phyllis Orenyo, J.M. West and Cheryl Woodruff Brooks. All proceeds from this book will go to gun violence prevention, by way of the non-profit Charles Bruce Foundation. Find out more about the book and its authors here.
Eight people were killed and 28 injured in shootings in Chicago over the weekend. An 11-year-old boy was shot to death and five others injured in Cincinnati Saturday. Those incidents don't seem to get much national attention because they're not out of the ordinary. Mass shootings with lots of casualties do, like the one that left 15 people dead in Lewiston, Maine last month. But mass shootings are so common too that there are now established patterns -- the shock of the shooting incident, the initial reports which may or may not be accurate, the thought and prayers level, the gun control debate and then on to the next one. A new book, called American Roulette – written by eight different authors – is a fictionalized account in the day of people involved in a mass shooting from the time they wake up on the fateful morning until the tragedy itself and aftermath. On The Spark Monday, we were joined by two of the authors of American Roulette – Rev. Matthew Best and Sherry Knowlton. Rev. Best came up with the idea for the book after a mass shooting earlier this year,"I thought, what's missing? The humanity? These are people's lives that they have been cut short. And it's very easy to have this debate where people talk past each other because that's an abstract idea. But these are people's lives." Best added,"They didn't just show up all of a sudden at this shooting. They were living their life just like you and I. Just like anybody else. And they have plans. They have loved ones. And so what happens in what I've noticed in these shootings is we end up with a focus on the numbers, the focus on the loss, the focus on, again, going into what should we do without taking a look at, well, who are we talking about? There's teachers, there's fathers and mothers and sons. And these are people who were going to do things and they were cut short. And it's not just them. It has a ripple effect that goes beyond that. So every time that one of these shootings happens, it's not just the victims. It's also the shooter, the humanity of the shooter as well, which is very hard for people to talk about because we want a scapegoat of this is the evil and we want to throw all that onto them and come up with some excuse as opposed to seeing there's a human being as well that has caused this." Knowlton said that even though the book doesn't come right out and say it, there is an overarching theme, "The most direct is that today in America, this could happen to any one of us at any time. And the whole concept of American roulette is that in Russian roulette, the person who's playing the quote game has is holding a pistol to their own head, and they may or may not get shot depending on when the bullet strikes the chamber. But in American roulette, all of us can be going about our lives, and we don't know that somebody else has picked up that rifle or gun and is playing a game that we don't even know that we're about to become participants in and probably be the losers." Now, that is a scary thought. The authors of American Roulette are Matthew Best, Robert Bradshaw, Andy Carey, James Dodds, Cheryl Dunn Bychek, Sherry Knowlton, Pat LaMarche, Phyllis Orenyo, J.M. West and Cheryl Woodruff Brooks.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's a milestone episode for me - number 300 - which represents 6 years of podcasting consistency. For this one, I ring in the milestone and the end of 2022 with 9 reflections on the year from my personal running journey, from my coaching, and from another year of lapping the sun as a human. Fellow Rogue coach James Dodds joins me to process it all. I think there is advice in here for everyone on topics ranging from strength training to big goal dreaming to navigating the seasons of life and more. Happy New Year everyone! In this episode to kick off the new year, Chris returns to his hosting duties and welcomes guest James Dodds to the conversation. James is a prior guest on the show and fellow Rogue coach. Chris opens up about the reasons for taking his break in the final two months of 2020, plus gives the lessons he learned during that time. Then, Chris and James turn to predictions about what racing will look like in 2021 and how to think about your training during this new year, still with plenty of uncertainty. Happy New Year everyone. Chris is excited to be back!
Outkick sports writer Jason Whitlock and James “Uncle Jimmy” Dodds return to fill in for Glenn. Jason reviews a “typical liberal reaction” to his statements about liberalism, race, and God. The “silent majority” of believers must un-silence itself. Uncle Jimmy recounts an important moment in his life involving Jason. Several Penguin Random House employees allegedly cried over the company’s decision to publish Jordan Peterson’s new book, “Beyond Order." Jason takes calls from listeners. There is a way to be responsibly masculine, and we must have faith over fear. Sports commentator Shannon Sharpe slams Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy as racist for smashing watermelons. Jason knows them both and has some choice words for Sharpe. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Outkick writer Jason Whitlock fills in for Glenn, with the help of James “Uncle Jimmy” Dodds. Jason holds nothing back on how, despite Washington, D.C., WE can bring America back together, lean into racial harmony, and restore the values of our founding. He discusses the replacement of Christianity with “black pride” in modern black culture. And further, he makes the case that modern liberals are the “ideological descendants of enslavers from 400 years ago," who impose “mental slavery” and insist black people are a “special classification” in America, defined by skin color. Jason also reviews his article on the “Unapologetically Black Olympics," asks, “what does America actually promise?" and argues that racism has become an opinion. Learn more about your ad choices. More or less every time I line up for a race or hard workout, there is fear that comes in those moments. I think about questions like... how much will it hurt? how will I deal with the path? will I respond or crack under the pressure? what if I do crack? Inevitably though, when faced with my physical, I do respond. It's not always great or perfect, but I learn something about myself every single time. I've also learned many other truths from taking part in the journey itself, both from my own revelations as well as the insights of my running friends and community. In this episode with many-time guest James Dodds, we discuss this big question. What has running taught us? What truths has it revealed to us and how do we relish in those moments to learn?
Jeff Knight and James Dodds are both old co-workers. We all coached together in a previous life, but have remained friends to this day. Jeff works at Under Armor as a Senior Manager of Exercise and Nutrition, and James works part time as a coach and virtual coach at Rogue Running. Over the past few weeks we have done some video chats on how runners are adapting and what interesting shifts they are seeing. I got them to open up a bit more on what challenges they are seeing across the board with their runners and clients, but also what things are helping. What are the positives we are seeing out of the pandemic? We dive into it all in this episode.
In this conversation, James and I get reflective on the lessons we have learned from this time of quarantine and how these lessons might be carried into the future when this is over. It's admittedly hard to go to this positive place right because so many are facing tragedy, but it is one place that I am looking for personal hope. I am committed to being different (in a good way) on the other side, and I believe we all need to do our part to make the world a different place too.
James Dodds and I started the year with episode #107 - Healthy Tips for 2019. Now with this episode, we start to bring the year to a close with reflections from 2019 from both a personal and coaching perspective. I think there is a little something for everyone in here!
Multi BAFTA-winning writer Jack Thorne returns to our TV screens tonight with the latest in his trilogy exploring life in modern Britain. "The Accident" on Channel 4, starring Sarah Lancashire, is set in a small Welsh town in the aftermath of a industrial disaster. We talk to the writer about anger, blame and justice as the community faces up to some difficult truths. 2020 looks to be a vintage year for child performances at The Oscars. Leslie Felperin joins us to discuss whether The Academy ought to reintroduce the Juvenile Academy Award, last given to Hayley Mills, one day shy of her 15th birthday for her performance in the 1960 film Pollyanna. Comedian and actor Jillian Bell stars in Brittany Runs a Marathon, a film about a lost young woman who takes back control of her messy, unfulfilling life by entering the New York City Marathon. The film is based on a true story and Jillian goes through a complete physical transformation as the story unfolds on screen. Kirsty talks to Jillian about body shaming and why it’s a good time to be a funny woman in Hollywood. Before he became an artist James Dodds was an apprentice shipwright, and boats remain the focus of his attention. For his new exhibition, Wood to Water, at the National Maritime Museum, Cornwall, Dodds has painted a series of large – some very large – pictures of the traditional boats of the region, but these are not the usual views of the vessels at sea, with wind, waves and weather. Dodds is concerned with boats as sculptural shapes and with the details of their construction. The Cornish maritime historian, John McWilliams, reviews. Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Simon Richardson
Episode 152 was a lightning rod for discussion as I received the most email ever within 24-hours of the episode as you all sounded off on shoes, Kipchoge, and world records. We start this episode with James with further reaction from me on shoes (should they be regulated?) and a special Kipchoge-based true-false question for James. Then, we switch into part 2 of Running True-False with James where we again span the spectrum of topics from training to the mental side of the sport. Example true-false discussions in this episode include: - Road racing (and training) make you a better trail runner. - For a 4-hour marathoner, a 90 minute easy run provides the same benefit whether you run 10 minutes per mile or 11 minutes per mile. - Coaching is primarily a one-way street. - The fear of success is a bigger challenge for runners than the fear of failure. And more... Also, make sure you listen to part 1 with James in episode #149 if you haven't already. Chris
In this episode, we jump right in with my returning guest - James Dodds - and bring back a concept that we used in episode #37. Running True or False? For this part 1 of this episode, we cover 6 different true/false statements, 3 each of James and Chris. The topics covered span the spectrum from training to goal setting to shoes, and I think you will find the discussion entertaining. If you have a different opinion or would like to pose a true/false question to us for discussion in part 2, please send to chris@roguerunning.com. Also, stay tuned for my World Championship Preview episode with Johanna Gretschel which will go up mid week before the World Champs kick-off on Friday, Sept 27th.
As promised in this episode, we recap my trip to France to see the US win the Women's World Cup (semis and final), race a 40K in the French Alps, and attend the Monaco Diamond League meet in person. With James as my discussion partner, we talk about all of the inspiration and lessons learned from each experience. I hope you enjoy it! And here is the video from the mountain race in France: https://www.facebook.com/152886823859/videos/1438387136302768/?epa=SEARCH_BOX
In this episode, fellow Rogue coach and prior podcast guest James Dodds is back on the podcast to discuss what characteristics you might look for in a running coach. It will be impossible to find a coach with all of these characteristics, but this should give you an exhaustive list from which to choose your own criteria. Next week, I will be back from vacation and will give a full update on my experience attending the Monaco Diamond League meet in person where I got to see Mondo Duplantis in action and Sifan Hassan break the Women's Mile World Record.
In follow-up to episode #132, James Dodds is back on the show to talk about 6 more reasons why runners miss their goals. This one gets a little bit more existential than the first, so be prepared to have your mind bended just a little bit! Plus, we start with some listener email, including responses from James and I.
In this episode, we start with a intro reaction to a listener email about the cost of recovery. Thanks Paul! Then, James and I turn to a discussion on the top reasons why runners miss their goals. If you are struggling with a big goal, then this episode might resonate with you. Please give us feedback or input on this episode for our Part 2 discussion. You can email chris@roguerunning.com. Also, if you are interested in our podcast training program, then you have until June 21st to sign up and can find more info here: www.roguerunning.com/podcasttraining.

Guest hosting with me this week is episode #8 and #37 guest James Dodds. In this one, we riff on 8 tips for staying healthy as a runner in 2019 with a bonus #9 at the end when James introduces the too too rule. As our intro this week, we dig into James's fandom, and he names two of his favorites from the running archives, plus we get a little James philosophy to start things off. Consistency is king in our sport, so listen in and add some of these tips to your routine to keep moving this year!
With episode #37, we bring back episode #8 guest and former Rogue coach/employee - James Dodds. We call him the Reverend James Dodds for a reason because he knows how to preach the message of running philosophy and "religion." In this episode, we do a roundtable between Steve, Chris, and James with various running questions - framing them all as true or false questions. We cover everything from the pressure of elite runners to footwear and even dig into the existential in this fun and freeform debate. Listen in and then feel free to join the debate by emailing us at chris@roguerunning.com.
