This week's episode has a little bit of everything. The role of team sports in the military, lessons in leadership, how to stay injury free through a career in the infantry, and the challenges of balancing two careers and family responsibilities in a dual military marriage. Our guest has, on top of his successful Army career, played a key role in leading the All Army Rugby team to a decade of dominance in the Armed Forces Rugby Championship. COL Nate Conkey is a current United States Army War College Fellow studying at Columbia University and most recently served as the Regimental Tactical Officer for the First Regiment of the United States Corps of Cadets at West Point, NY. He commissioned into the Infantry in 2000 after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He also holds a Master of Arts in Physical Education from Columbia University's Teacher's College. COL Conkey's infantry career has taken him from the 2nd infantry division at JBLM to the 101st at Ft Campbell to teaching at West Point's Department of Physical Education to the 1st Cavalry Division at Ft Hood, back to JBLM for multiple field grade assignments and a stint as the 1st Corps Commander's Liaison Officer to United States Army Pacific from Fort Shafter, Hawaii. He returned to JBLM as the Battalion Commander for 2-357 IN of 189th INF BDE, and then most recently served as the Professor of Military Science for Auburn University Army ROTC program in Auburn, AL. He has been selected as the next Commandant of the United States Military Academy Preparatory School beginning in Summer 2024. COL Conkey's deployments include as a Rifle Company Commander to Kirkuk, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and as a Future Plans Officer with the 1st CAV DIV to Bagram, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His list of awards is long, but highlights include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Ranger Tab, Airborne, Air Assault, Pathfinder, and both the Combat and Expert Infantryman's Badges. He was the Army's Athlete of the Year in 2014. He is married to COL Kate Conkey, an Academy Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership and they have three kids together. Major Ben Griffin is the Chief of the Military History Division in the History Department at the United States Military Academy. He is the author of the recently published Reagan's War Stories which examines how the Reagan Administration used fiction to think about the military balance of power in Europe and throughout the world. Ben holds a PhD and MA in History from the University of Texas at Austin, a MA in International Security Studies from the University of Arizona, and a BS in History from the United States Military Academy. He commissioned as a Military Intelligence Officer after his graduation from West Point in 2006 and has been stationed at Ft Drum, NY, Ft Hood, TX, and Ft Riley KS, as well deploying twice to Iraq in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn. However, CID on FT Hood took the case from Killeen PD. The family was never approached by CID, Christophers unit, or anyone else. The Soldiers at the party were on a gag order. Christopher's death was never investigated. No authority took responsibility. Christopher's death was ruled an accident. It was reopened in 2020 by KPD, pending medical records. Hood. These issues were brought to a head with the sexual assault and brutal murder of Specialist Vanessa Guillén, who disappeared on April 22. She was murdered by a fellow soldier, who killed himself in June when he escaped Army investigators taking him into custody. Some of the issues we consider are: What were and are the continuing failures of leadership at Ft. Hood in these areas? Why is the SHARP program simply window dressing? What will it take to make a change? Our Guest Diane St. Ives relates her personal experience of being sexually harassed over 40 years ago while a Private at Ft. Hood. She talks about the retaliation she received for reporting the crime and how it all still affects her today. In March 2007, a soldier named Christopher Ferguson died after allegedly falling from an apartment balcony. Since Christopher's death, his sister Christina McDonald has tried to uncover what really happened to her brother. He is another soldier who died under unusual circumstances at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. The Army ruled his death a suicide. Christine has spoken to a few soldiers who were with Christopher the night he died. She has been given conflicting stories. Supposedly he fell to his death, but another soldier claimed Christopher jumped to his death. Christine also spoke to a young girl who wasn't in the military, but was staying in the apartment. She witnessed Christopher get physically assaulted and then put into a headlock. The After placing Christopher in a headlock, the girl saw Christopher get dragged out on the balcony. Seconds later, she heard Christopher screaming in agony. Within a few days, he would die from injuries sustained from his fall. Christine has tried to find out if Christopher actually fell or did one of his fellow soldiers throw him off the balcony? He served 25 years and counting in the active Army and National Guard, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major. Tyr has years of deployed time both as a soldier and a civilian to Iraq, Afghanistan, the Philippines, Asia, Africa, and various countries of interest. Tyr dropped out of University of Oregon’s School of Journalism in 1994 to be a lift operator at Mt. Hood. When the snow melted, he enlisted as a 19K, Abrams Tank Crewman for two years and some college money. Upon arriving at Ft Hood, TX, he tried out for the 1st Cavalry Division’s Horse Cavalry Detachment. Two kids and re-enlistments later, he attended Special Forces Assessment, and was selected to be an 18D, Special Forces Medic. Tyr completed the paramedic portion of his training with FDNY in early September 2001. He deployed to Afghanistan almost immediately after earning his Special Forces tab and Green Beret. His various duties and positions for government entities since have included medic, diplomatic security specialist, intelligence and atmospherics collector, analyst, instructor, operations sergeant, and sergeant major. As an instructor, he has taught at every level from Sub-Saharan tribesmen to university students to federal agents to ambassadors. He is accredited by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.Tyr has several divorces and three wonderful children. He is currently a program manager for Black Rifle Coffee Company and a Special Forces company sergeant major in 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne). Trail Roots member Erick Ramos shares with us how the military got him running. He was always one of the last guys and struggled to stay motivated. He was stationed at Ft Hood, when life suddenly took a twist. He was on base when Ivan Lopez started opening fire in 2014. He sustained wounds to the face. On April 2nd, 2014 on Ft. Hood, Texas, a 34-year-old Army Specialist opened fire on his fellow service members. Staff Sergeant Rosario was one of his intended targets. This may be the first time these words have appeared in the same sentence except within America’s largest active-duty, armored US military base. Today’s show will destroy many of the stereotypes that present major barriers in the minds of many to taking up a practice of yoga and meditation. Many men, for example think it’s not macho enough or that they aren’t as flexible as the women they see in magazine pictures and they will be embarrassed. Many seniors think they’re too old. Kids, teens and college students are often too busy with their social media devices and apps and African Americans and Latinos often think that “no one like me does yoga”. If you fall into one of these categories, you will find many just like you, actively using yoga and meditation to regulate the stress and anxiety in their lives.   My guest today is Dr. Beth Funk. Dr. Funk is on the frontline in a number of ways in helping American military service members and their families cope with lives that are marked with uncertainty and subject to constant change. She grew up in an Army family and has been an Army wife and professional educator for 31 years. I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a royal military family, but, she’s as close as one can be. Her father General, Paul Yeosock commanded all US Army ground forces during Desert Storm. Her husband, Lieutenant General Paul Funk II is the base commander at Ft Hood and is currently on deployment in Iraq, and her father-in-law is General Paul Funk Sr. US Army Ret. She is sometimes, affectionately referred to as the First Lady of Fort Hood.   As with most who grew up in an Army family, Beth attended 10 different schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated from Marymount International High School in Rome, Italy. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Elementary and Special Education, she also holds a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.   Continuing her life’s mission of service, she has taken on a new mission and this is our topic for today. She owns a business, Life Moves Yoga, dedicated to serving the entire demographic profile at Ft Hood, including the enlistee, their families and the large civilian employee at the base. She and her instructors specialize in trauma sensitive, therapeutic and adaptive yoga.   As briefly mentioned before, the stability that the rest of us strive for our entire lives, is virtually unknown to the military family. Setting aside the stress of overseas deployments for the enlistee, the requirement to pick up and move without a lot of advance notice is a constant in the life of the military family. Building the coping skills and resilience in a population that ranges from young children to adults and seniors is a major challenge, but, that is the herculean task Beth and her team have undertaken.   She is the recipient of a number of awards, including The Secretary of the Army’s Public Service Award, The Department of the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, The Yellow Rose of Texas, The Saint Joan of Arc Award, The Molly Pitcher Award, The Margaret C. Corbin Award, and The Dr. Mary E. Walker Award.
