Video games has 40-years worth of history behind it. It has allowed a gradual progression of expectation in terms of what a video game should be. We started with Pong, and now we have The Last of Us. Is it fair for VR to be slotted into a sub-category of video games, and expect it to thrive within the first year of release? Is the expectation of what we know a video game should be in 2017 hindering the organic and natural growth of VR in gaming? Thanks for listening, and don't forget to subscribe! Some people might consider VR as nothing more than a fad - a gimmick - and often compare it to technology that has been hailed as 'the next big thing', only to fail a few years later. It's a perfectly understandable opinion to have - we've been burned so many times in the past. The Wii, 3DTVs and the Kinect could all fall into the category of 'gimmicky tech'. But is it fair to compare VR to these past examples so early? Thanks for listening, and don't forget to subscribe! John Carmack mentioned a while ago that memories formed in VR can be just as real as memories formed in the real world. We touched on this briefly during episode 26 of VR Roundtable but I just wanted to explore this subject a little further in this short follow up episode. In this Deep Dive, Steve explores the criticisms of VR titles lacking motion controls. Even with motion controls most titles still have artificial elements, so a well made game without motion controls isn't truly any less of a legitimate VR experience based on that element alone especially if it doesn't have any of the secondary problems that motion controls themselves exhibit.
In this installment of "Deep Dives", Anthony explores the theory that the PlayStation VR launch lineup was one of the best we've seen since the arrival of the Xbox 360 way back in November 2005. He truly believes that the PSVR launch lineup is one of the most underrated launch day catalogs that we've seen in the last 12 years. Thanks for listening, and don't forget to subscribe! The first generation of consumer-ready VR headsets were released almost a year ago and it's safe to say the technology has yet to fully break into the mainstream. Enthusiasts and early adopters are the primary market at this stage, but what will it take for VR to truly break into mainstream consciousness? In this short episode, I talk about some of my own opinions on this subject, and explore what kind of innovations I think need to be made in order to capture mainstream attention.
This time, Anthony talks about how widespread VR adoption is not going to happen overnight. VR Gamers are going to need a ton of patience to weather the early storm of VR's growing pains. If you want to jump on the VR bandwagon, go ahead, but know what you're getting yourself into. Triple A games in all our favorite genres is going to take some time. We have to be accepting of these early VR games, and maybe we need to be more open minded about trying new genres and supporting these early VR efforts. Our patience will eventually be rewarded. Has Virtual Reality ruined monitor gaming? In this video I talk about the impact VR has had on my more traditional gaming habits over the past year. The simple answer to the question above is 'No, VR hasn't ruined monitor gaming.' But since I have barely touched a non-VR game since getting my HTC Vive, there has certainly been a big impact in my particular case and I thought I'd make this short video to discuss that impact. This is the audio from the VR Roundtable Deep Dive video series on our YouTube channel. We hope you enjoy! Welcome to the very first episode of Deep Dives. Deep Dives is a special video series from VR Roundtable, where the editors explore a specific VR related issue, and try to cover the subject from a number of possible angles. In our weekly podcast, we don't always have the time to go really deep on any one particular topic. That's where Deep Dives comes in. In this Deep Dive, Anthony takes a closer look at the tracking and controller situation with PlayStation VR. There are many complaints about poor tracking and lackluster motion controllers. Should Sony offer a brand new tracking solution mid cycle? Should we simply wait for PS5 and PSVR 2? Anthony explores these issues in more depth. Thanks for listening, and don't forget to subscribe!
