Hagar Chemali (former spokesperson for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations) joins host Ron Steslow to take the Democratic Socialists of America's foreign policy seriously on their own terms, reading what the movement has written down. They begin with the DSA's ascent: a run of 2026 primary wins and Democratic leadership inclined to accommodate the energy rather than resist it, echoing MAGA's takeover of the GOP.  From there, they turn to the left's foreign policy lineage—the distance from establishment liberalism's alliance and diplomacy to a progressivism warier of American power and rosier about its adversaries.  Then they break down the DSA's national security strategy: defund the military, close overseas bases, and dissolve what it calls the U.S. empire.  Finally, they weigh the stakes for a shifting party with Israel as the first flashpoint of a weakening alliance and a broader diagnosis of populism without ideology and the institutional decay it accelerates.  In Politicology+, they discuss the recent mass crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and what it exposes about Europe. Have you done everything right and still watched the scale refuse to move? I sat down with fitness industry veteran Chalene Johnson, who built her career telling women exactly how to lose weight, and then walked straight into that same wall herself in perimenopause. Her hormone panel came back "dialed in." She was still doing every workout, every macro track, every habit that used to work. The weight stayed anyway, until she found the piece nobody had pointed her toward, the link between cortisol, insulin resistance, and a metabolism that stops cooperating no matter how hard you push. We get into the stress inventory that changed her day almost overnight, why she traded daily cardio for heavy strength training, her honest concerns about GLP-1s, and the Harvard longevity data that convinced her friendship matters more for a long healthy life than anything you'll find in a gym. Timestamps: 0:00 — Doing everything right and still gaining weight in perimenopause 4:36 — How the fitness industry sets women up to fail on purpose 12:00 — Hormones "dialed in," weight still not moving 13:14 — The cortisol and insulin resistance connection nobody explained to her 13:57 — The stress inventory exercise that changed her days 23:39 — Why she traded cardio for heavy strength training 25:48 — The identical twin study on muscle, memory, and cognition 27:55 — Her honest concerns about GLP-1s and rapid weight loss 33:49 — Why community predicts longevity more than diet or exercise 36:03 — Rapid fire: supplements, sunlight, and energy vampires 42:08 — Camp Be More and where to find Chalene Memorable Quotes: "I have my hormones dialed in, but when I was working with an integrative medical doctor who would look at my panel, she's like, 'Your cortisol is through the roof.'" — Chalene Johnson "The machine needs for you to not succeed so that you believe, okay, something else is going to work for me." — Chalene Johnson "We can't heal a body we hate." — Dr. Anna Cabeca Key Takeaways: A "perfect" hormone panel doesn't rule out cortisol and insulin resistance quietly driving weight gain underneath it Writing out every stressor and circling only what you control turns "reduce your stress" into something actually doable Lower body strength training, not cardio, was the single habit Chalene says moved the needle most for her body and brain The identical twin study she references found more lower body muscle correlated with better memory and cognition at 50 and beyond Rapid weight loss without addressing muscle and detoxification support can cost you the two things that matter most for longevity Community, not diet or exercise, was the strongest predictor of quality of life and lifespan in the longest running Harvard longevity study Vitamin D from sunlight and magnesium are the two non negotiables in Chalene's own daily routine FAQ Why do I keep gaining weight in perimenopause even though my hormones are balanced?  For many women, hormone balance is only part of the picture. Cortisol and insulin resistance can quietly drive weight gain even when a hormone panel looks well managed. Addressing stress load and metabolic health alongside hormones is often the missing piece. Does stress actually cause weight gain, or is that oversimplified? Chronic stress raises cortisol, and elevated cortisol is linked to increased insulin resistance and a slower metabolic rate. This isn't about willpower. It's a physiological chain that can work against weight loss efforts regardless of diet and exercise habits. Is strength training better than cardio for women in midlife? Strength training, particularly lower body work with adequate weight, supports muscle retention, bone density, and metabolic health in ways cardio alone doesn't. Many experts recommend prioritizing strength training first, then layering in cardio. What is Camp Be More? Camp Be More is a live event created by Shelene Johnson for women, focused on connection, aging on your own terms, and building community with other women navigating midlife. How much strength training do I need to see results? Shelene recommends starting with two days a week focused on the lower body if daily training feels overwhelming. Consistency matters more than volume when you're starting out.   Connect with Chalene Johnson Website: https://chalene.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chalene Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chalenejohnson/?hl=en TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chalenejohnson YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@chalenejohnson Connect with Dr. Anna Website: http://drannacabeca.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegirlfrienddoctor Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegirlfrienddoctor/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegirlfrienddoctor Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/thegirlfrienddoctor/

The Chuck ToddCast: Meet the Press
Full Episode - Why Democrats Are Breathing A Sigh Of Relief After Wisconsin + The Structural Reforms Democrats Can't Keep Ignoring

The Chuck ToddCast: Meet the Press

Chuck Todd unpacks David Crowley's astonishing photo-finish win over Francesca Hong in Wisconsin — a race Crowley dropped out of, re-entered with Tony Evers' backing, and then won by roughly 3,200 votes — and argues national Democrats are far more relieved than they'll ever admit. Had Hong won, she'd have become a face of the party while being forced to spend the fall answering for past statements about defunding police, abolishing prisons, and canceling Thanksgiving rather than talking about the economy, handing Republicans an absurdly easy story to tell. Chuck credits Tony Evers for refusing to fence-sit and mounting what amounted to an emergency rescue operation, while noting Crowley isn't remotely "establishment" — he came from genuinely modest roots and ran a campaign largely defined by what he wasn't. Chuck identifies Hong's central unforced error as nationalizing her race in the closing weeks, a fundraising-driven instinct in an era where media appearances increasingly function as fundraising appeals, forgetting that the national online audience and the local electorate are not the same people. Mamdani stayed disciplined and won; Hong drifted into boutique cultural debates and lost. But Chuck cautions against reading this as a repudiation of the left: Peggy Flanagan won in Minnesota, progressives are doing better this cycle than they have in years, and the 2027 House will be younger and slightly further left. The real structural lesson is that progressives struggle in higher-turnout and open primaries, still face a persistent obstacle with African American primary voters, and — most tellingly — keep getting rejected by the working-class voters they orient their entire message toward, which is more than a messaging glitch. Abdul El-Sayed emerges a quiet winner here, now much harder to lump in with the DSA, and Chuck notes that neither AOC nor Bernie ever endorsed Hong. The rest of the monologue is a run of results that keep pointing the same direction. Trump-endorsed candidates keep losing primaries: Mike Lindell was trounced in Minnesota, Darline Graham didn't clear a third of the vote and is no lock in her runoff, and Chuck's read is that Trump's grip is measurably slipping. Fourteen-term Congressman John Larson lost his primary, part of the highest incumbent-loss rate since 1970 — in a genuine wave, Chuck says, the House could see north of 25% turnover. On Iran, he echoes Chris Christie's warning that this war turns Trump into Jimmy Carter: Iran has issued a list of demands that amounts to an "F you" ransom note, is openly watching the American election calendar and timing its moves accordingly, and — just as in 1980 — the humiliation itself is the point. All of it, Chuck notes, was Trump's own choice. He closes somewhere unexpected: giving Mark Zuckerberg genuine credit. In his 6,500-word manifesto, Zuckerberg argued that the real danger of AI is the concentration of power, writing that hoping an absolute power will benevolently provide for humanity has historically never ended well — and committing Meta to a review process before models go public. Chuck notes the argument is being made by a deeply self-interested party and that the important parts got buried in what was really a debate with Sam Altman, but he singles out one thing worth emulating: Meta funneling data center tax revenue back into teacher bonuses and job training. Communities hosting this infrastructure have to win too, and he hopes more tech CEOs adopt that philosophy. Then, Ben Wikler, the former Wisconsin Democratic Party chair and author of the new book This Is the Plan joins the Chuck Toddcast to argue that Democrats keep making the same category error: they keep winning change elections and then failing to deliver change, because they're trying to fix policy without first fixing the system that determines who gets to make policy. Wikler's framing is memorable and a little cheeky — you have to win the ring of power and then cast it into Mount Doom — but his point is serious. When the right wins power, it immediately restructures the system to entrench itself; Democrats win and then govern as though the rules are fixed. His plan runs through the state level, where free and fair elections are actually secured, and demands ending the filibuster and reforming the Supreme Court, including term limits for justices, because campaign finance reform is impossible without a Court willing to allow it. Wikler argues America is in the greatest period of political instability in its history, that inequality now exceeds the Gilded Age, that gerrymandering has left millions of people without a meaningful vote, and that both party bases increasingly want to fight more than they want to win — while swing and non-voters have simply given up on the system itself. He rejects the tired rebuilders-versus-renovators binary: FDR's Social Security pitch was a huge swing, incrementalism was the only path to Obamacare, and the actual art of politics is starting from values and vision and then figuring out what can pass. The conversation gets specific about Wisconsin and about trust. Wikler pushes back on the idea that Francesca Hong is too "Madison" for a statewide race, notes she's spent years traveling and listening across the state, and calls Tom Tiffany an election denier who is genuinely beatable in a cycle where affordability is the central issue. He and Chuck work through the puzzle of why Tony Evers' calm, steady approach succeeded where Biden's didn't — Evers came out forcefully against Dobbs, and, more fundamentally, you have to convince a majority of voters that government can actually work, which means doing what you said you'd do and then relentlessly telling people you did it. Wikler points to pandemic relief as the cautionary tale: those programs dramatically improved life for lower-income voters, the child tax credit cut child poverty in half, and then it all expired and Democrats got punished for the loss rather than credited for the gain — with an extension that had bipartisan support dying anyway, because the filibuster exists largely to deprive the other side of a win. He credits Ken Martin for investing in state parties, argues Democrats don't need a 50-state strategy so much as fifty different state strategies since the coalition looks different everywhere, and concedes that Trump has been the most successful Republican of this era, spawning an army of mini-mes modeling themselves on him. And yes, Chuck asks the obvious question — why not run for Senate yourself? Finally, Chuck reveals his ToddCast Top 5 list of biggest non-presidential primary upsets, which David Crowley’s win taking the top spot. He also answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment and weighs in on the highly suspicious sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to Jared Kushner’s brother. GLP-1 medications have changed how we treat obesity and metabolic disease. But as their use has exploded, so have questions about side effects, muscle loss, long-term use, and whether patients are receiving the support they need to use them safely. In this episode, I reconnect with metabolic health and regenerative medicine expert Dr. Tyna Moore to revisit our conversation from two years ago and examine what we've learned since. We discuss: How to tell when your GLP-1 dose may be too high What you can do to protect your muscle and bone during weight loss Which metabolic and nutritional markers should you check before and during treatment Why weight can sometimes return after stopping a GLP-1 What emerging research suggests about GLP-1s beyond weight loss GLP-1s can be life-changing, but a lower number on the scale isn't the same as better health. Ultimately, how these medications are used—from dosing and monitoring to nutrition and strength training—matters just as much as whether they're used at all. This week, Dr. Kahn discusses new research showing that after just 4 weeks of eating a whole-food, plant-based diet, sophisticated measures of gene activity demonstrate a reversal in aging and a reduction in inflammation. In another study, the calorie advantage of a plant-based diet is discussed, with the equation H=N/C (Health = Nutrition/Calories) proving to be a useful reminder. Finally, athletic performance in college athletes eating plant-based or omnivore diets was equivalent, which is reassuring to many. Dr. Kahn and his wife will begin their 50th year of plant-based diets in September. Other topics include more conversation on advanced glycation end products, dietary protein, finerenone for the kidneys, the top 3 modifiable risk factors for dementia and heart attacks, red hair color and heart disease, Viagra and statins for the prevention of cancer metastases, and fatty liver disease. Devin: What is your superpower?Emily: So I think— I, I don't— it's hard for me to boil it down to just one, but I would simply say my superpower is really rooted in connecting dots. And so seeing things that others may not see because I'm able to put the dots together.Food as medicine can move from a hopeful idea to a scalable health care solution when the people closest to the problem build the system. That is the lesson I heard from Emily Brown, founder of Attane Health and now Chief Healthcare Officer at Sifter Solutions after Attane's acquisition. Emily's work began not with a business plan but with her daughter's diagnosis and a family grocery budget that suddenly could not keep up.“It all started with lived experience, my family's own personal experience with food insecurity and just the need to have specific foods to support my daughter's health,” Emily told me. “We were on WIC, SNAP. I'm actually a former Medicaid recipient.”That experience revealed a gap in health care that millions of families know too well. Doctors can diagnose food-related conditions but families are often left alone to figure out how to pay for and prepare the foods that could help them heal.Emily first responded by founding a nonprofit that helped get special dietary foods into food banks and pantries. Under her leadership, the organization launched one of the first food prescription programs in Kansas, serving clients who had prescription diet orders from physicians.Over time, Emily saw that charity alone could not solve the problem at national scale. Health care needed the tools, data and infrastructure to make food and nutrition care part of routine delivery.“I knew that technology was gonna be really important to scaling our work,” she said. “So I left the nonprofit, started what became Attane, really to develop the technology and the infrastructure to do food and nutrition care at scale.”Attane Health now works as the health care arm of Sifter Solutions, partnering with health plans, pharmacy benefits and health systems to expand access to nutrient-dense foods, education and measurable outcomes. Emily pointed to high-risk maternal health as one powerful example, where better nutrition can support mothers facing gestational diabetes or preeclampsia while helping reduce risks for babies. Her message is practical and hopeful. Food is not a side issue in health care. For millions of people living with chronic conditions, food is part of the standard of care. Emily is helping build the bridge so patients can actually access it.tl;dr:This episode shows how lived experience can spark scalable health care innovation.Emily Brown built Attane Health to make food and nutrition care accessible.Attane Health now grows through Sifter Solutions after a strategic acquisition.Emily explains why storytelling helps turn hidden health challenges into action. This article highlights practical ways to develop the superpower of connecting dots. How to Develop Connecting Dots As a SuperpowerEmily describes her superpower as “connecting dots” and “being able to tell that story.” She sees things others may miss because she can “put the dots together,” then frame the insight in a way that helps others act. She said, “The power of storytelling is really significant because we learn through stories, we connect through story.” That combination has helped her move from being a mother on Medicaid facing food insecurity to becoming a venture-backed founder building solutions for families like hers.Emily's superpower became visible when her daughter received a diagnosis that required a gluten-free diet. Overnight, Emily looked in her pantry and realized many of the foods her family relied on were no longer safe. Her grocery budget quadrupled while her resources shrank. Instead of accepting a system that paid only for clinic care, she began identifying every point of friction. That led her to start a nonprofit, create food prescription programs, advocate before federal agencies and eventually build Attane Health to integrate food and nutrition care into health care at scale.Frame your challenges as opportunities for growth, connection and innovation.Ask what is missing from the data before assuming the data tells the whole story.Look for the friction points hiding in plain sight and treat them as places to build solutions.Bring others with you by using stories from data, patients and partners.Be patient when building disruptive solutions because meaningful change often takes time.By following Emily's example and advice, you can make connecting dots a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileEmily Brown (she/her):Founder of Attane Health, Chief Healthcare Officer at Sifter Solutions, Attane Health, Now a Sifter Solutions CompanyAbout Attane Health: To improve health through food and nutrition care by providing access to health foods, education, and actionable data.Website: attane-health.com, siftersolutions.comCompany Facebook Page: facebook.com/attanehealthBiographical Information: Emily is the Co-founder of Attane Health and Chief Healthcare Officer of Sifter Solutions, a digital health company in the “food is medicine” space. Under her leadership the nonprofit grew to a 7-figure annual budget, supporting patients access to healthy food. Emily is a national patient advocate who has provided both oral and written testimony to the FDA and USDA. Becoming a Rookie Again – John Fisher

Time for an Upgrade? The honeymoon period doesn't last forever in retirement. The free Retirement Drift assessment takes five minutes. It's not a report card. No right answers. If you want to get started on working on the new Future You, that's exactly what the Designing Your New Life in Retirement program is built for. Six group sessions with 6 to 10 people doing the same, and a structured way to move from putting it off to designing. The September cohort is enrolling now with two scheduling options. Learn more here | Sign up here _____________________________ What would persuade a successful professional to trade seniority and compensation for beginner status, and six months of Police Academy training at 70? For John Fisher, the answer was not reinvention for its own sake. It was the chance to keep growing, serving, solving problems, and feeling fully engaged. Before becoming a Ranger, John spent more than 20 years at Sony Pictures Television, including as supervising producer of The Young and the Restless, where he won six Emmy Awards. His earlier career included work with HBO and key roles in launching MTV, VH-1, MTV Europe, and The Comedy Channel. His next chapter didn’t pop up overnight. It grew from volunteering. One opportunity led to another: EMT certification, a seasonal Ranger-Assistant role, ranger training, and eventually the Río Hondo Basic Police Academy. There, surrounded by much younger recruits, John became California's oldest graduate of a basic Police Academy, class president and was voted Most Inspirational. In this conversation, John explains how he handled the demands of the academy, why age brought advantages as well as limitations, and how three simple criteria (learning something new, helping people, and having fun) guided his choices. His story is dramatic, but his approach is accessible. Becoming a Ranger may not be your thing, but what small experiment might open your own unexpected next chapter? John Fisher joins us from California. _________________________ Bio John Fisher is a Ranger with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, a local park agency with extensive property in the Santa Monica Mountains. He joined the MRCA as a volunteer in 2024. After attending the Rio Hondo Basic Police Academy in 2025, Fisher completed field training and became a generalist ranger in 2026. Prior to the MRCA, Fisher worked for Sony Pictures Television for over 20 years as a supervising producer for “The Young and the Restless,” where he won six Emmy Awards. Earlier, Fisher worked on the NBC Enterprises syndicated daytime program, “The John Walsh Show.” He spent 11 years with HBO as a production executive, where he supervised a wide range of programming, including “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher,” “The Chris Rock Show,” “Reverb,” and “Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist.” His experience encompasses key roles in launching MTV, VH-1, MTV Europe, and The Comedy Channel, as well as numerous producing and consulting credits for broadcast, pay cable, syndication, corporate, and home video projects. A longtime member of the Television Academy, Fisher has served on the Daytime Peer Group Executive Committee and the Daytime Awards Committee. He has been involved with community and educational endeavors and has volunteered with his homeowners’ association, Syracuse University's alumni advisory network, and Boston University's Los Angeles program. An avid cyclist, he has been a member of several advocacy groups and a volunteer trail maintainer. Additionally, he continues to volunteer with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue team based in Santa Clarita and as a civilian volunteer for the Los Angeles Police Department through his membership in the California Emergency Mobile Patrol (CEMP). Fisher also belongs to the Mountain Bike Unit in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and is a volunteer for the National Park Service and California State Parks. A native of Baltimore, Fisher holds a master’s degree from Syracuse University's Newhouse School and an undergraduate degree from Towson University. __________________________ Other Retirement Podcast Conversations You’ll Love The Third Act – Josh Sapan Mattering…in Retirement – Jennifer Breheny Wallace What If You Pivot Instead of Retiring? – Scott Siff ___________________________ About The Retirement Wisdom Podcast There are many podcasts on retirement, often hosted by financial advisors with their own financial motives, that cover the money side of the street. The good news is that most of what protects and builds your milk supply comes down to a few simple things you can control. This episode breaks down how milk production actually works, how to gauge your supply accurately, and why so many mothers worry they are not making enough when they truly are. You will learn practical ways to establish breastfeeding in the first days and weeks, and find out how to increase your supply if you need to. We also dig into the evidence on galactagogues, the foods, herbs, and medications marketed to boost supply, so you know what the research really shows. Mike Madrid (author of The Latino Century) joins host Ron Steslow to examine how AI is redrawing the machinery of politics and forcing a reckoning with what remains distinctly human.  They begin with campaigns, where operatives now test messages on synthetic electorates, AI agents built to think like real voters, before a word reaches anyone.   From there, they turn to the parties, which are unraveling into digital networks: brands so weak a cultural figure could hijack a nomination like Trump did in 2016.  Then they dive into Pax Machina, a publication arguing powerful AI opens the first stage of institutional invention since the founding, warning that a president commanding loyal AI delegates could hollow out constitutional checks without changing the texts.  Finally, they weigh Gregory Conti's warning of science without scientists, asking whether choosing which questions matter is foundation enough for a dignity no machine can supply.  In Politicology+, they discuss what a major Bitcoin wallet heist shows about where AI-era security is headed.
