Climate change is the most important issue of our day. But sometimes measures that would prevent further global warming can feel so large that it is hard to believe that they would actually happen. So, Julian talked to to Eban Goodstein, the director at a graduate MBA program in sustainable business at Bard, about what is already being done to protect our planet and what else needs to be done.

Mass incarceration is a topic that is widely talked about and the implied solution is that we need fewer people in prison. Dr. Kubrin, a professor at UC Irvine, has researched two California processes (Realignment and Prop 47) that actually decreased prison population. 

2020 was simultaneously a year of a radical reimagining of policing and also a year in which the importance of effective public safety became even more apparent as the United States experienced a huge increase in homicides. David L. Weisburd is the Executive Director of the Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy and has done a lot of research into how our police can become more effective at preventing violent crime without harming the communities that they are supposed to protect.

2020 saw homicide and other violent crime spike. Crucial to understanding what policy steps should be taken to prevent violent crime is understanding the root causes of it. Kyshawn Smith is an Assistant Professor at Radford University who studies how social connection can be related to violent crime. 

So much is going on this week in the world. There's a lot of bad, like COVID, appalling comments from Trump and the fact that the movie Mulan thanked Chinese government officiants who are committing the genocide of Uigher Muslims. There's also some good, like the election quickly approaching and the fact the Nuggets beat the Clippers!!! With all this going on, Julian talks about the horrifying fires burning the West Coast of the U.S. and how this is the result of climate change. While on the topic of climate change, Julian breaks down what exactly is causing climate change, what the effects are, and how we save the future of our planet.

As schools across the country head back to school (virtually or physically), Julian briefly explains the drama around going back to school. Then, Julian talks to New Yorker columnist Keith Gessen about this complex issue in New York City and his experience teaching his pre-school aged son during remote learning.
