New York's factory farms are raising more animals than ever before, particularly cows, producing unprecedented amounts of manure waste. This manure is typically not treated before being dumped into the environment. Meanwhile, state and federal policies and incentives continue to prop up Big Ag's factory farm model at the expense of family-scale operations, which are collapsing in alarming numbers. Food and Water Watch has drafted legislation to ban new factory farms and the expansion of existing ones, and revamp farm policies to build a food system that works for everyone. We hear from Eric Weltman of Food and Water Watch; lead legislative sponsors Senator Jabari Brisport and Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal; and Michael Richardson of Third Act.

Over the past couple of years, The Indypendent News Hour has become the premiere news and public affairs show on WBAI, a listen-sponsored community radio station whose signal beams 90 miles in all directions from atop a Midtown skyscraper. On Nov. 8 2022, we expanded our normal one-hour news show into a five-hour election night special. We not only keep track of key races in New York and nationally but provide a deeper analysis of the issues that have animated the midterms — crime, inflation, abortion rights, the threat to democracy — and ones that haven't been discussed nearly enough: the racist backlash to Black Lives Matter, the demise of local news and the spread of conspiracy theories, the growing power of the billionaire class over the rest of society. Throughout the show, we heard live interviews with NYC voters by roving Indy reporters. Here is the five-hour breakdown. FIRST HOUR —Interview with Ben Max, editor of Gotham Gazette, about the most competitive governor's race in New York in a generation as well as key congressional and legislative races that could swing the balance of power in Washington and Albany. —Interviews with Socialist state legislators Jabari Brisport and Phara Souffrant Forrest about Kathy Hochul turning to the New York Left to save her floundering campaign. SECOND HOUR —Interview with legendary NYC journalist Tom Robbins. —Interview with Bob Hennelly about the demise of local media and the national media echo chamber that has been promoting the “red wave” for weeks. —Grassroots report from Florida where Gov. Ron DeSantis is pioneering is testing out his version of homegrown American fascism as prepares to run for President in 2024. THIRD HOUR —Interview with acclaimed Marxist-feminist-anti-racist scholar Linda Martín Alcoff. Will there be a backlash against the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade? If not, why not? —Interview with Indy Contributing Editor Nicholas Powers about the underlying causes of the public hysteria over crime, the rise of conspiracy theories and why working class people of color are now also starting to move away from supporting the Democrats. FOURTH HOUR —Grassroots report from North Carolina where Cheri Beasley is trying to become the first Black woman from the South to be elected to the Senate. —Interview with Mondale Robinson of the Black Male Voter Project. —Interview with Carrie Santoro, executive director of Pennsylvania Stands Up. —Interview with historian Max Elbaum about what the left must do to defeat MAGA and reset U.S. politics in a more progressive direction FIFTH HOUR —Interview with Linda Sarsour, Brooklyn-born Palestinian-American activist, Women's March co-founder and national surrogate for Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020. —Grassroots report from Arizona. —Interview with Ron Daniels, President and Founder of the Institute of the Black World 21s Century about the Midterm elections and their impact on Black America.

Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America
Last Tuesday New York State held its second primary of the summer and New York City voters are sending another socialist senator to Albany. DSA endorsed candidate Kristen Gonzalez trounced Elizabeth Crowley winning the democratic primary in the newly formed Senate District 59, which includes portions of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. We were at Kristen's victory party in Long Island City and will share some sounds from the ground. And we are joined live tonight by former New York City Council candidate and NewsGuild of New York organizer, Brandon West. We'll talk about the significance of Kristen's win and the results of two other Brooklyn Senate races - Jabari Brisport's run for re-election and David Alexis' challenge of Senator Kevin Parker in Flatbush. Jack Devine also speaks with Nic, a fellow PSC union member, about the year ahead for thousands of teachers organizing for a more just CUNY.
Emma hosts Dr. Heather Berg, Assistant Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Washington University St. Louis, to discuss her recent book Porn Work: Sex, Labor, and Late Capitalism. Emma hosts Dr. Heather Berg, Assistant Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Washington University St. Louis, to discuss her recent book Porn Work: Sex, Labor, and Late Capitalism. Emma first dives into yesterday's primary results in NY and Florida, walking through the crushing victories of socialists Krysten Gonzalez, Gustavo Rivera, and Jabari Brisport in New York City and Maxwell Frost in Orlando, before looking at real-estate and NYT-backed Dan Goldman's victory despite three progressive candidates passing 10k votes. Then, she's joined by Doctor Heather Berg as they dive right into her class-based analysis of porn and sex work, and how she came to this field of study, walking through the field's historical focus on consumption and representation in the industry despite the intrigue Dr. Berg found in the grey market nature of the work, occasionally being criminalized and always a precarious element of the gig economy, leading her to look to the void of worker commentary on working conditions in the industry. After a brief conversation on the (unsurprisingly) laborious and mundane nature of this labor, and how it departs from other gig industries (much easier to work for oneself), Dr. Heather Berg and Emma walk through the history of porn and sex work in the US, beginning in the 1970s' supposed “golden age” of porn, and why, despite the heralding of pieces like “Deep Throat” and “The Devil in Miss Jones,” the majority of pornographic productions in this era saw lower-budget films with lower-quality working conditions, before the switch to video in the 1980s saw profits soar, with better pay being met with longer work weeks and more hardcore productions meaning greater physical labor (and more anti-porn backlash from Christian fundamentalists). Alongside the video boom, the HIV/AIDS epidemic saw the beginnings of organizing in the industry, as sex workers and porn stars saw themselves at the forefront of the public health efforts, creating their own standards of testing across the industry, leading up to the digital boom of the 1990s, where a mass increase in piracy (largely supported by the production elements of the industry) saw workers' claims to the fruits of their labor start to vanish, with companies like Pornhub springing up to centralize the production with limited redistribution of profits and offering a blueprint for the more clearly “gig” work of Onlyfans that would come about a couple of decades later. Wrapping up, Dr. Berg and Emma tackle the state of the industry today, exploring how the discriminatory policies and pay around certain identities come from the ingrained standards of the late 20th Century, the efforts of organizations such as BIPOC Adult Industry Collective not only to make demands of management but to provide the infrastructure for workers to become completely independent from management, and why the issues around working conditions in sex work and porn are not due to their nature as “sex” but their nature as work. And in the Fun Half: Emma discusses Biden finally being pushed to do the bare minimum to address the student debt crisis (hitting both means-testing and grant-specific qualifiers), before Kowalski from Nebraska shares his take on the 10-20k in relief. Emma and the crew also tackle the brief fall of Andrew Tate, walking through Hasan's debate with him, and James from Fort Worth explores book banning and Christian fundamentalism in schools. Climate activists hoped that Democratic super-majorities in the NY State Senate and State Assembly could deliver historic legislation that would greatly expand the state of New York's role in producing renewable energy, create tens of thousands of union jobs and lower rates for consumers. The Build Public Renewables Act did pass the Senate at the end of May but then died in the Assembly without receiving a vote before the legislature adjourned for the year. State Senator Jabari Brisport of Brooklyn and Illapa Sairitupac, a climate activist who is running for State Assembly in Lower Manhattan, join us to talk about the battle for public power in NY.

Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America
Even with Cuomo out of office, our state still faces a housing crisis. This week, The Supreme Court has issued a temporary injunction against the "Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act," also known as the New York State's Eviction moratorium. This immediately suspends the eviction protections for tenants included in that law. Up to 40 million Americans could face eviction due to the ending of the eviction moratorium. For some, it's fifteen months worth of back rent- and in more expensive cities like NYC or Portland where rents have skyrocketed after the 2008 mortgage crisis, that can mean up to $31,500 - due immediately. As the Delta variant surges with 619,000 deaths in the last 30 days and hospitals filled to breaking point from Florida to Texas (including 90,000 hospitalized children in the last week alone), the pandemic is certainly not over. And with only 71% of adults vaccinated and children under 12 ineligible for a vaccine, it won't be ending any time soon either. Tonight, we hear from State Senator and NYC-DSA member Jabari Brisport about the plans from the DSA Socialists in Office in New York State's legislature to fight for housing as a human right - and the right for all of us to stay at home during COVID 19. Here are resources via the Met Council on Housing on what to do if you are facing eviction: DO NOT SELF-EVICT! DO NOT MOVE OUT! It is extremely important to remember that evictions proceedings are long and there are other anti-eviction laws in place. How can you protect yourself now?1) Apply for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP): If you apply for this program, your landlord cannot move forward with your eviction. This is the strongest protection we have to keep people in their homes.2) Sign up for the federal CDC moratorium: The federal government has extended its moratorium to October 1st. It is not as strong as the NY State Eviction Moratorium but if you sign the CDC declaration of hardship, it will provide you with a defense in court if your landlord tries to evict you3) Join your building's tenant union, or reach out to CASA, Crown Heights Tenant Union or Met Council on Housing for housing help, resources to start your own tenant union or you can also call 311 for available city resources. We here at RPM stand in solidarity with tenants across the country.

In which Sarah asks the Earth Arts Justice lead question about continuity between Jabari and grandparents, and parents. And Jabari speaks of his father, who is an immigrant, but unlike most politician's tales of predecessors who overcome odds, Jabari speaks eloquently of his father's resilient bends toward freedom, the wide open world, making unexpected “experimental” decisions, taking unconventional jobs and overstaying a student visa, all the while being also hardworking, dependable, modeling. What Jabari makes clear is how much his love for others, and desire for economic, environmental, racial and gender justice for all motivates his politics and teaching but also, how much he is willing to walk into a powerful and unscripted future to attain those goals.

Bonus: https://www.patreon.com/posts/14485685 This is our LIVE TAPING episode with Khader El-Yateem and Jabari Brisport, who were inspired to run for city council by Bernie Sanders (whom they admire) and by Trump (whose scary & destructive victory convinced them to enter politics). A Palestinian, Arab-American, socialist Khader El-Yateem is a community organizer & faith leader who is committed to social justice. He talks about how his experience being imprisoned & tortured by Israeli soldiers inspired him to seek understanding and dialog. He ran as a Democrat and though he lost the primary by 7 points, he scored an amazing victory by coming so close and taking on the Democratic Machine. Like Rev. El-Yateem, Jabari Brisport was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). A third generation Brooklyn resident, Jabari is still in the race, having run on the Green Party ticket. We discuss the Bernie Bro Myth, which they shatter as an Arab-American and African American, "coming out," as socialist and why they ran in the parties they did.
