This is when God created the world overflowing with beauty and potential, placed humans in it, and presented His first commision for us. Together we will unpack what it means to be made imago Dei, in the image of God. Understanding this concept is critical, and there are consequences if we do not. "I think one of the things that's wrong with politics is that it's devolved into identity politics and it's devolved into 'okay, what does this group want and how do we give that to them. . .' it's much more fruitful and effective in the long run and much more honest in the long run to hold to those things that are true. . .and communicating to people on what those things are."

Truth, goodness, and beauty are the hallmarks of the Kingdom of God, but sadly we often overlook the "beauty." We all see a crystal clear river and say it is beautiful. We see another stagnate with debris and trash and say it is polluted and ugly. Why do we share this universal understanding of beauty? Where does this shared understanding come from? There is an intrinsic answer here that points straight back to our Creator. Today we are joined by artist, entrepreneur, professor, author, speaker, and pastor Brian S. Chan. Brian received a DMin in Christian Philosophy from Talbot, where he wrote his dissertation on philosophy in films, and a ThM in Historical Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, where he wrote his thesis on the beauty of God and art in worship. Since then, he has never looked back as he continues to share and deepen his understanding of beauty and the Kingdom. During our discussion, we asked is beauty objective, where does it come from, why do humans pursue ugliness, when did the church have a vision for beauty, and what does a theology of beauty look like? Last, we get practical and ask how can each of us apply this concept into our daily lives?Episode Landing PageDisciple Nations Alliance Website

One of the most popular questions we get as a company is to define (or identify) our underlying worldview. Parents who sift through the Internet looking for homeschool programs want to find companies that align enough with their values that they can trust them as tools to educate their children. There are lots of ways curriculum companies operate. Some align explicitly with a particular religious faith. Some align with a political agenda or perspective—either to the left or right. Others adamantly identify as purely secular—no mention of anything that could be construed as religious. Still others claim to align with common core or public school standards. There are some programs that opt out of ideology all together—particularly math companies, for instance. So where on this spectrum does Brave Writer fall? You can download show notes for the podcast here: https://blog.bravewriter.com/category/podcasts/Resources:Looking for a new math program? The BreakPoint Podcast
Is New Paganism Actually Pagan?

The BreakPoint Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 30, 2023 5:13

Recently in The Guardian, Emma Beddington covered a new twist on an old practice. According to the 2022 U.K. census, writes Beddington, “74,000 people declared they were pagan, an increase of 17,000 since 2011.” Meanwhile in the U.S., “a 2014 survey by the Pew Research Center estimated at least 0.3% of people... identified as pagan or Wiccan, which translates to about one million people.” And, though it's not clear how anyone could know this, “That number is expected to triple by 2050.”  Those numbers, while a small minority of the population, are significant when set against the overall decline of Christianity in the West. According to British historian Dr. Ronald Hutton, today's version of paganism is “a religion in which deities don't make rules for humans or monitor their behaviour—humans are encouraged to develop their full potential.” This comes with a heavy emphasis on being Earth-conscious, with rituals and festivals focused on connecting with nature. In this way, suggests Hutton, paganism is filling “a need for a spiritualised natural world in a time of ecological crisis.”   Beddington describes the new paganism as a “tolerant, open, life-affirming, female-friendly faith.” It does seem to check all the right contemporary Western boxes: a feeling of transcendence without many hard commitments, a rejection of traditional morality while keeping a vague inclusivity, and enough concern for the natural world to qualify as a social justice cause. Or, as a group based out of the University of Massachusetts Amherst summarized: “Pagans view the world as a place of joy and life, not of sin and suffering. We believe that the divine is here with us in the natural world, not in some faraway place in the sky.”   At the same time, the new paganism is a world away from ancient paganism. Though often a catch-all term for a wide variety of pre-Christian beliefs, paganism suffers from a shortage of written records. However, what we do know would not be best described as a universe born out of “joy and life, not of sin and suffering.”   In Hesiod's Theogony, the Greek version of the origin of the cosmos and the gods, the birth of each divine generation is preceded by violence. Uranus, the sky, produces children with Gaia, the Earth, but hates them. Of their children is the titan Cronus who castrates his father. His blood falls onto the Earth and sea and creates still more gods. Cronus is, in turn, dethroned and imprisoned by Zeus.  Celtic paganism does little better. Drawing on contemporary sources, most scholars believe the Druids enacted human sacrifices on a broad scale to appease the forces of nature, which they saw as temperamental and hostile. One example is the Lindow man, whose mangled remains suggest a ritual death as part of cultic sacrifice.  Employing St. Augustine's approach to the depravity of pagan gods, writer Paul Krause offered this critique:   The pagan gods were born from patricide and rebellion. They were born from primordial acts of sexual violence. Their patronage was in the civitas terrena which cared only to advance its depraved lust to control.  Modern pagans reject ancient paganism. They find solidarity with the idea of human equality and dignity, see the natural world as a place of order rather than of chaos, and call for sexual restraint, the protection of children and disadvantaged groups, the end of slavery, mindless conquest, and human sacrifice. To this extent, they are embracing the innovations of Christianity.  After all, it was Christianity and not paganism, as historian Tom Holland has explained, that taught that men, women, and children, slave or free, share the imago dei. It was St. Patrick, not the Druids, who believed and taught Ireland that “the Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof” and not subject to hostile spirits who are appeased by bloodletting. It was Christianity that turned Nordic peoples away from a belief system that committed them to conquest, plunder, and death in battle.   In short, all the things that make modern paganism appealing to modern people aren't pagan. Though many Westerners are bored by the hollowness of materialism and desperate to fill the spiritual vacuum it has left, they will not find answers in dead religions. Only Jesus offers the truth: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Kasey Leander. Ryan unpacks the contextual and nuanced ethic of Christ, which was centered on the values of the kingdom that he proclaimed."So much of Jesus's ethical reasoning has to do with notions of priority and primacy, as moral judgments often involve a deliberation—choosing which principle or principles should be given ultimate primacy and priority above all others."About Ryan, Host of Thinker Sensitive:Ryan Ragozine is the host of Thinker Sensitive. Bad Discovery Calls are dead. Qualification Calls are dead. The right agenda and plan sets the stage for every other conversation you're going to have with a buyer. Everyone is looking for more and more leads, but the buying process is changing too. And it all comes back to the Discovery Call. In this episode, Jake and David cover:The agenda - so many people skip this, it's silly.Role and fit - who am I really talking to and who else do I need to loop in?Top priorities - keep it business-focused and it narrow it to 2-3.Current & ideal plans - the order of operations and how you ask questions has a direct impact on the quality of answers that you get. Start high-level then get tactical.Grand recap - reconfirm their top priorities (you should also be recapping after every section so it doesn't feel like 20 questions).Worldview alignment - give back and add value. Explain the problem you solve in terms of world trends and what's happening in the space.Value matching - focus on the features that are applicable to the priorities they mentioned (you may put these last two in a second call demo - but again, huge miss).Driving momentum - you lose momentum by asking about next steps and asking to speak with XYZ - you need to be the architect and drive this. Hit the subscribe button on your favorite podcast player so you don't miss the next episode.…Sign up for the Modern Leader Newsletter for more tips and talks like this from Jake: https://skaled.com/modern-leader-sign-up/ Follow Jake: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jakedunlapInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jake_dunlap_/Twitter: https://twitter.com/jaketdunlapWebsite: https://www.jakedunlap.com/

63% of Americans claim to be Christians, yet our culture is becoming increasingly chaotic and full of sin. Why is this happening? The reason is that most Christians only know how to apply the Bible to certain areas of life. The consequence is that Christians have little to no impact on culture. Do you see it?This episode will give you an introduction to Ideas Have Consequneces, the podcast of the Disciple Nations Alliance. This is an action-oriented show where you'll hear from a variety of biblical worldview teachers, writers, and cultural commentators. It's Tuesday, May 16th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson 6-year-old boy only one in family to survive Texas mall massacre Only one member of the Cho Family — a 6-year-old boy -- survived the Texas mall massacre last week in Allen Texas, reports ABC News. William Cho lost his parents and 3-year-old brother that day.  The Cho family was part of the Prestonwood Christian School and community in Plano, Texas.   Pastor Jack Graham commented on the Christian community helping out. GRAHAM: “This wonderful, sweet family, three of the four now in Heaven, one child left behind needs the ministry and the care of Christian people. Our entire community needs this as well. The church is made for a time like this. Christians are made for moments like these so that we can show the love of Christ and to be there for people.” Thus far, the Go Fund Me campaign for little William Cho has raised almost $1.9 million.  Psalm 68:5-6 tells us, “A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation.  God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity.” Non-mortgage debt on the rise Consumer non-mortgage debt is on the rise in the U.S. It's now at $4.64 trillion, up from $2.7 trillion ten years ago. That's an appreciable increase in debt per Gross Domestic Product as well. Overall household debt now exceeds $25.5 trillion, according to numbers just released by the New York Fed.  Debt in America is 360% of Gross Domestic Product The overall debt in America has grown from 160% of the Gross Domestic Product – the sum total value of all goods and services -- in 1980 to 360% of the GDP today. The federal deficit for this fiscal year has already topped $1.1 trillion, and estimates for the 2023 and 2024 deficits hover around $1.8 trillion.   The average deficits between 2013 and 2018 were about $600 billion.   The average deficit under the Clinton administration was 1.6% of the GDP.  The average deficit under the George W. Bush administration was 3.3% of the GDP.  The average deficit under the Barack Obama administration was 4.9%.  The average deficit under the Trump administration was 7.4%.  And now, the average deficit under the Biden administration is estimated at 7.9%. American optimism declining Pew Research finds that American optimism has taken a dive in the last two years. Now, a full 58% of Americans believe that life was better 50 years ago in 1973. Just two years ago, only 43% of Americans claimed that.  Democrats tend to be more optimistic. Deuteronomy 28:43-45 reminds us that “the alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.  Moreover, all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments.” Trump makes exceptions on abortion An eye-opening interview with Donald Trump conducted by the Messenger over the weekend pressed in on the former president's views on abortion.   THE MESSENGER: "Abortion is a big issue you talked about in 2022 when you said that Republicans didn't really have the right message. They didn't know how to talk about the issue properly. So what's the right way for a Republican to talk about abortion in the 2024 elections?" TRUMP: “Well, pretty much what I said in the CNN town hall. ... First of all, I'm a believer in the exceptions, right? And just as Ronald Reagan was a believer in the exceptions, but I'm a believer in the exceptions … the life of the mother, raping and incest.  … The other thing I really believe is that the radicals are people that would have a baby destroyed, killed at the end of the ninth month or even after birth.” Later in the conversation, this was said. THE MESSENGER: "DeSantis signed a six-week abortion restriction in Florida. Do you think he was right to do that?" TRUMP: “Well, he has to do what he has to do. If you look at what DeSantis did, a lot of people don't even know if he knew what he was doing. But he signed six weeks, and many people within the pro-life movement feel that that was too harsh.” THE MESSENGER: "What do you think? Is it too harsh for you?" TRUMP: “I'm looking at all alternatives. I'm looking at many alternatives. But I was able to get us to the table by terminating Roe v. Wade. That's the most important thing that's ever happened for the pro-life movement.” The U.S. church gender gap The church gender gap in America is bigger than you may have thought. A recently released Study of Faith and relationships looked at 19,000 Sunday church attendees and found that there are 42% more never-married single women than never-married men in the pews today. The gender gap between single, divorced churchgoers is 77 percent women to 23 percent men. Overall, women make up 62 percent of all Sunday church attendees.  Here's another important takeaway from the study.   Faithful marriages matter. While less than half of young adults in the U.S. grew up in continuously married homes, a full 87% of young men still attending church grew up in continuously married homes. Canadian government looking to punish Christian on-line content The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission will now be regulating online content, according to the newly adopted Online Streaming Act, reports the CBC. It will have the power to impose financial penalties on anybody who violates parts of the act, which includes respecting diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity. The Canadian Radio-Television Commission already regulates Christian broadcasters, requiring them to dedicate broadcast time to promoting other religions.  No more COVID passports for incoming vistors to America Beginning last Friday, Canadians and other multinationals may enter the U.S. without proof of COVID-19 vaccination. The Biden administration dropped the requirement, following a vote of the US House of Representative to that order in February.   Japan dropped their requirements for COVID vaccines or testing on April 29th. And China and Brazil still require testing before entering their respective nations.  SpaceX launched another 56 satellites And finally, Elon Musk's SpaceX launched another 56 satellites over the weekend taking the total to over 4,400.   His Starlink internet system now has an estimated 1.5 million subscribers. The Royal Caribbean cruise line has implemented the system. The dish will run you $599, and the monthly cost will be $90-$120.   If you're an RV'er, and on the move, the month's rate jacks up to $150. That gets you 30 gigs a day. It's Monday, May 15th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Muslims in Congo killed three Last Thursday, the Allied Democratic Forces, an Islamic rebel group, ambushed a key crossing point for people and goods in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing three people and burning cars and motorcycles, reports International Christian Concern. At Kambo, the Semuliki River crossing channel, the Muslim jihadists emerged from the shores and overpowered the security officers guarding the access point as travelers, vehicles, and motorbikes were disembarking the barge.  Those killed in the terror attack were two sailors manning the barge and a soldier controlling access to the Semuliki River crossing channel, a key crossing point for people and goods between Kasindi and Butembo, in the Eastern region of Congo. Colossians 3:25 says, “For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality.” The Worldview would add if not in this lifetime, the wicked will be held accountable in eternity. Texas mall shooter may have targeted “gun-free” zone Mauricio Garcia, the 33-year-old gunman who killed eight people on May 6th at Allen Premium Outlets mall, may have targeted the suburban Dallas shopping center because it was a gun-free zone according to the published rules of the mall.   Thankfully, an unnamed police officer who had already responded to an unrelated call, heard the shooting in progress, and shot Garcia dead within four minutes of the beginning of the rampage.  No doubt the body count would have been much higher in light of the fact that the mentally ill man had brought eight guns to the scene, according to The Associated Press. The assailant wore tactical gear and fired an AR-15-style weapon. According to the Crime Prevention Research Center, 94% of the mass shootings since 1950 have targeted “gun-free” zones.  And, when analyzing the mass shootings since 1998, 84% of them have taken place in “gun-free” zones. Killers often openly talk about their desire to attack where no one is there with a gun to stop them. Justin Bourque, who shot to death three people in Canada, ridiculed gun-free zones on his Facebook page. James Holmes, the Batman movie theater killer in Colorado who killed 12 people and wounded 58 others, revealed in his diary that he targeted the theater because it had posted signs banning permitted concealed handguns. Payton Gendron, the Buffalo, New York shooter who killed 10 people in a supermarket last December, said, “Attacking in a weapons-restricted area may decrease the chance of civilian backlash. Schools, courts, or areas where Concealed Carry Weapons are outlawed or prohibited may be good areas of attack. Areas with strict gun laws are also great places of attack.” Former Vice President Joe Biden, a Democrat, introduced the Gun-Free School Zones Act to the U.S. Senate in 1990, and it was signed into law by then-President George H.W. Bush, a Republican. The law was clearly proposed with the intent to prevent mass shootings at schools. But, as the statistics reveal, it did not result in the desired outcome. Texas mall security guard a hero Garcia, the Texas gunman on May 6th, researched when the mall was busiest — Saturday afternoons — and posted photos on social media in mid-April of a store near where he ultimately began shooting people.  Among those killed were two elementary school-age sisters, a couple and their 3-year-old son, and a 20-year-old Allied security guard named Christian LaCour, who evacuated one individual to safety, and was shot while courageously remaining to help others, reports FaithWire.com. More pastors promoting adoption, but fewer members are adopting Church leaders are increasingly promoting adoption and foster care for their members even as fewer members are involved in the processes, according to a new LifeWay Research report that surmises the drop may be attributed to the pandemic, reports Christian Headlines. The poll of churchgoers, released Thursday, found that church leaders are more likely than they were in 2017 to raise funds for and encourage their congregation to adopt. At the same time, churchgoers are less likely than in 2017 to say they know of a member who has adopted or provided foster care. The survey found that pastors were more likely in 2022 than they were in 2017 to raise funds for families who are adopting (18 percent in 2022; 8 percent in 2017), encourage families to provide foster care (17 percent to 12 percent), and encourage families to consider adoption (16 percent to 14 percent). Church members, though, are less likely to adopt than they were in 2017. The poll found that churchgoers say they were less likely in 2022 than in 2017 to say a member of their church provided foster care (25 percent in 2017 to 16 percent in 2022), adopted a new child from the United States (17 percent to 13 percent) and adopted a new child from another country (15 percent to 11 percent). If the Lord is prompting you to adopt a child or a teen from foster care, contact Lifeline Children's Services. Call (205) 967-0811. That's (205) 967-0811. James 1:27 says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Elisabeth Elliot honored in a Museum of the Bible display And finally, the story of Elisabeth Elliot, a Christian missionary who devoted two years of her life to ministering to a tribe in Ecuador that killed her husband, is featured in a new exhibit at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., reports The Christian Post. While traveling through the Ecuadorian jungle to connect with the people of the Auca/Waodani tribe, Elliot's husband, Jim, and four other missionaries were speared to death on January 8, 1956.  Elizabeth Elliot returned to the Ecuadorian rainforest two years after her husband's death to live with the very tribe that had killed her husband. Her decision to forgive them helped the tribe begin a new path. In Matthew 5:43-45, Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in Heaven.” The tribesmen had been afraid and uncertain about the group of outsiders, but later came to feel remorse for their actions. The tribesmen embraced Christianity quickly once it was explained to them. The exhibit, which explores the Christian missionary's life and career spanning six decades before her death in 2015, is located on the Impact of the Bible floor in an area designated as "Personal Stories." This section of the Museum of the Bible highlights individuals who have used God's Word to impact their communities and the broader world. The Museum of the Bible exhibit about Elliot's work opened on March 30, and it will run through Jan. 28, 2024.   Watch the movie End of the Spear.
