"Comedy is important because everything sucks right now and a lot of times the only way to make change or get people involved or interested is through comedy." - Julia Young This episode is brought to you in collaboration with Sweet B Design. Today's guest is Julia Young, a comedy writer, performer, author, actress, improviser, and social media star. She's currently a producer on Showtime's late night show Desus & Mero, a cast member and writer on MTV's Wild 'n Out, and her new book Please Don't Grab My Pussy: A Rhyming Presidential Guide was published in October 2018 by Animal Media Group. This book is a timely and humorous rhyming picture book that is decidedly for adults with a good sense of humor. Through campy pop culture rhymes and beautiful oil paintings, the narrator of our book guides you through a list of things you can grab while offering more poetry ways to refer to a woman's genitalia than the word "pussy" that Trump so vulgarly used. In this fabulous Two-In-One team-up, our very own Maniacal Mike chats with writer Howard Shapiro about his and artist Erica Chan's new graphic novel, QUEEN OF KENOSHA! (Nina Overstreet, a singer-songwriter hustling amidst the music scene of 1963, finds her big break comes not from a record deal, but in a chance encounter with a clandestine agency of the U.S. Government, and the secret war against an underground Fourth Reich rising just beneath the surface.) In addition, we get into how he came to write comics after falling in love with the medium later in life, his previous work in the Young Adult arena, the financial realities of self-publishing and starting a small press unit in ANIMAL MEDIA GROUP, his love for music and how that informed both Queen of Kenosha's story and one of it's most unique features, the deep-rooted and, unfortunately, topical political themes of QoK, discovering artist Erica Chan, and much more! The latest book in his Forever Friends Series, Hockey Karma, was just released last week from the Animal Media Group. The two talk with their guest about the series as a whole -- including the two previous graphic novels The Stereotypical Freaks (2013) and The Hockey Saint (2014) -- but specifically focus on the most recent work. Howard discusses the role that music plays in his books, which in many ways goes hand-in-hand with the premise of most of this narratives: hockey. He explains that while Hockey Karma (and The Hockey Saint) is centered on the sport, its themes transcend the ice rink. The Forever Friends Series is all about the struggles of growing up and finding your place, appropriate reading for young readers who will empathize with the books' protagonists.
I love variety in my reading, and this week you’re going to hear about a great graphic novel called The Hockey Saint, coming in October from creator Howard Shapiro, who I chat with during this episode. Here’s the book’s description: “Twenty-one year old Jeremiah Jacobson is the world's best hockey player, but he wasn't prepared for the frenzy and scrutiny that came with that title. Tom Leonard is an average college sophomore ... just a guy trying to find his place in the world as he sorts through issues that are both very real and seemingly insurmountable. Through a chance meeting, these two strike up an unlikely friendship. Their bond is tested when Tom discovers that his idol isn't as perfect up close as he seems from afar.” If you aren’t a big hockey fan, don’t worry – this book primarily focuses on friendship, one of my favorite subjects! Available on October 14, The Hockey Saint can be pre-ordered at Amazon at this link or through Animal Media Group, its publisher, here! Don’t miss it! You can read more about Tom Leonard in Mr. Shapiro’s previous graphic novel, The Stereotypical Freaks, available at Amazon by clicking here. Next week, there’ll be yet another fun chat with a great comics creator as we count down to episode #150! Show your thanks to Major Spoilers for this episode by becoming a Major Spoilers VIP. It will help ensure Wayne's Comics Podcast continues far into the future!
