Caleb is introduced as a fisherman whose community is attacked by the Empire, triggering his journey with freedom fighters and discovery of his potential powers from absorbing stellar radiation. The story takes place substantially further in the future than the Legion of Superheroes, with hints suggesting several thousand years ahead, involving a cyclical rebirth of Superman-like figures. The setting and plot borrow heavily from classic sci-fi tropes, especially Star Wars, with Empire-like antagonists and clone troopers, making it easy for readers to engage with familiar themes while exploring a fresh character. Character and Costume Design Caleb's design and costume stand out as a major positive, combining classic Superman elements with a unique space barbarian aesthetic (09:52). The costume features a red belt breaking up the silhouette, inspired by Chris Prowse's Legion era designs, which help avoid the "columnar" look typical of Superman's outfit. The only notable design critique was the oversized bracers and a 90s-style hairdo, which some felt clashed with the otherwise sharp look. Caleb's character design matches his personality and setting, with long hair and a rugged vibe fitting the spacefaring, water-world environment, enhancing his appeal as a heroic figure. Plot Developments and Key Conflicts The narrative efficiently covers Caleb's rise and battles against the Empire, culminating in his confrontation with Lex Luthor the 60th (35:00). Caleb's powers develop over time, including space-time warping and remote sensing abilities, which provide a fresh take on traditional Superman powers adapted for a sci-fi setting. The Empire's force, led by a long-lived Lex Luthor using cloned armies and Kryptonian technology, creates a formidable adversary, deepening the story's stakes and enhancing the space opera feel. The story ends on an open note, with Caleb and his love interest Lang expecting a child on a remote planet named Solitude, leaving the final battle unresolved and inviting reader imagination. Creative Team and Storytelling Quality The story benefits from the involvement of veteran creators Kurt Busiek, Paul Ryan, and Joe Rubenstein, resulting in a well-crafted and engaging narrative (13:32). Busiek's experience shines through with a concise yet dense script that balances action, character development, and world-building without unnecessary filler. The art consistently supports the story's energy, with Paul Ryan's layouts and finishes providing clear, dynamic visuals that highlight the vast space battles and intimate character moments. The use of water metaphors and first-person narration by Caleb adds depth and a unique voice, enhancing the immersive quality of the story. Strategic and Thematic Insights The annual explores themes of legacy, cyclical rebirth, and moral responsibility in a far-future setting, positioning Caleb as both a fighter and a moral center (45:16). Caleb's ethical decision to protect a newly discovered Krypton-like world instead of exploiting it for military gain underscores his role as a leader with a strong moral compass. The story embraces the idea of multiple Superman-origin planets, enriching the DC Universe's multiverse concept and allowing fresh storytelling avenues. The Empire's conquest and use of cloned soldiers and stolen technology reflect classic villain archetypes, reinforcing the narrative's deliberate homage to space opera traditions while keeping the tone accessible. Audience Reception and Legacy Potential Hosts expressed high regard for this annual, considering it one of the best in the Legends of Dead Earth line due to its clear storytelling, strong art, and compelling character (49:10). The story's straightforward approach and well-paced plot make it highly recommended and enjoyable even for readers less familiar with extended Superman lore. Despite its quality, Caleb's story appears to be a one-off with no known follow-ups, though the hosts expressed hope that the character and concept could be expanded in future multiverse or alternate universe tales. The annual's blend of familiar sci-fi elements with a fresh Superman iteration creates potential for inspiring new stories that merge classic superhero themes with space opera drama.

Together, our hosts review the third overall episode of the series titled "Legacy." With an episode that debuts a mysterious redhead with the initials "LL" that vies for Superman's attention, causing the Legion to be left in a lurch without his help, the hosts discuss how this felt like an intro to a character with bigger plans for the series. They also discuss the unique look to the series and some of the cameos including a certain "Bastich" and even a DCAU homage. Also discussed is of course the music supplied by the Dynamic Music Partners as well as the voice cast which features a DC animation voice acting legend and a voice more well-known for being a web-slinger than the Man of Tomorrow. Hello to you listening in Pasadena, California! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. I've been binge-watching The Big Bang Theory TV series as I do this time each year to humor me through our Pacific Northwest November to May Rain Festival. As you might know a consistent theme is the characters' devotion to comics and superheroes. Why? The characters are highly intelligent, socially awkward nerds who have difficulty navigating society whereas the superheroes possess save-the-day abilities, rare powers, and bravery. Comics can be a safe place to fantasize living idealized versions of themselves as the nerd-turned-hero. But what do the Superheroes have to say about living life as a Superhero? Following are 7 quotes: 1. “When you decide not to be afraid you can find friends in super unexpected places.” — Ms. Marvel 2. “Everybody's story begins “once upon a time,” and it's up to us to cherish the time we're given to ensure we live happily ever after.” — Scarlet Witch 3. “I have no idea where I'm going to be tomorrow but I accept the fact that tomorrow will come and I'm going to rise to meet it.” — Donna Troy 4. “The fate of your planet rests not in the hands of gods. It rests in the hands of mortals.” — Thor 5. “The future is worth it. All the pain. All the tears. The future is worth the fight.” — Martian Manhunter 6. “The door is more than it appears. It separates who you are from who you can be. You do not have to walk through it… You can run.” — Franklin Richards 7. “A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple as putting a coat around a little boy's shoulders to let him know the world hasn't ended.” — Batman Story Prompt: For a long time your character has felt that she is more than she appears to be but does not believe she has what it takes to show up fully in her power until one day a door appears in a wall and she .... write that story and share it out loud!    You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" It is a privilege to welcome back my friend, Kenyth Mogan, to the Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  The Glasgow, Montana, native, now a Los Angeles transplant, released his first full-length studio album, Star Stealer.  The collection paid tribute to some of his favorite singer-songwriters, including Belinda Carlisle (“Live Your Life Be Free”), Tiffany (“I Think We're Alone Now”), and several top artists from the 1980s and 1990s. Recently, Kenyth Mogan and the illustrator Umi Rage released My Super Fiancé. It is a genre-bending Boys Love drama that fuses superhero action with sizzling romance, mystery, and media intrigue. Set in the electrified sprawl of a futuristic metropolis known as Prism City, the story follows investigative journalist Trevor Prince and his fiancé Cole Carter—better known to the world as the vigilante superhero, MoonShadow. As love and danger collide, the two must navigate corrupt institutions, intergalactic conspiracies, and the fine line between truth and power. Told in twelve serialized episodes, each chapter is released with an original song crafted to amplify the themes, emotions, and tension of that episode—turning each release into a cinematic, multi-sensory experience. My Super Fiancé is equal parts superhero saga, queer love story, and social commentary—where power comes at a price, and passion pulls the trigger. On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Kenyth Mogan spoke about releasing his latest book, My Dead Boyfriend, the 20th anniversary of The Phoenix Chronicles, and what fans can expect from My Super Fiancé's soundtrack.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

That could mean a weird “meta” journey past the fourth wall, or finding a cure for immortality in the world of magic, or challenging the unknown with some super-science friends, or maybe everyone else in the world becomes a Metamorpho too! Valentine's-ish Literary Romance: Lucas Oakley on Nearly Departed, Boys Book Club & love stories that stay with you long after readingJoin Kate and Lucas Oakeley for this Valentine's-ish episode of The Book Club Review, recorded at Housmans Bookshop in King's Cross. We're exploring literary fiction where love takes centre stage, but the reward is complexity rather than a guaranteed happy ending.Nearly Departed manages to combine the enjoyable tropes of Rom Com with the thoughtful exploration through writing that we associate with literary fiction. We explore how Lucas's real-life experiences—witnessing a fatal cycling accident and his father's first wife dying young—shaped the book's exploration of love, loss, and second chances, and the art of balancing humour with heartbreak while playing with rom-com tropes.Of course, we've got plenty of recommendations for love stories with emotional depth, including Lily King's Writers & Lovers, Andrew Kaufman's All My Friends Are Superheroes, Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, David Nicholls' Sweet Sorrow, Douglas Stuart's John of John, and hot-book-of-the-moment Wuthering Heights. We're also discussing Boys Book Club, the organization Lucas has co-founded to encourage men to read and talk about books. What makes a great book club pick for an all-male book club? We're going to be finding out. We've even got Valentine's recipe – rigatoni with a long-simmered ‘Sunday sauce' – and a couple of cocktail ideas. All in all, the perfect ingredients for a literary Valentine's weekend.Become a member of The Book Club Review communityJoin The Book Club Review community on Patreon for ad-free listening, extra episodes, Kate's weekly reading diaries, the opportunity to connect with other listeners in the chat groups, and at the higher tier to talk books in-person with Kate at the monthly book club. Nostalgia for Classic Films:The hosts reflect on their favorite films, with GameGod revealing his nightly ritual of watching “Infinity War,” a choice that evokes nostalgia and excitement among fans. Moose adds a humorous twist by mentioning his love for “Back to the Future,” lamenting its elusive presence on streaming services. Matthew and Jessica Plummer explore how characters like Superman, Captain America, the Punisher, and the X-Men might respond to immigration enforcement, state violence, and mass deportations. From Superman's roots as an undocumented immigrant to Captain America's loyalty to ideals over governments, the conversation examines whether superheroes can ever truly be apolitical—and what justice means when the law itself causes harm. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Ryan, Todd, and Maddy meet their new favorite character, the Chameleon, in "Seven Little Superheroes," the latest wacky episode of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. This supervillain is a gender-fluid shape-changer who has a grudge against Spidey, Iceman, Firestar, and also four other random superheroes (Captain America, Namor, Doctor Strange, and Shanna the She-Devil). All seven of these superheroes get a mysterious invitation to the Chamelon's private island, which is a lot bigger than it looks and is full of traps designed to entice and ensnare them all. We love the Chameleon and we love how goofy this episode is. Today on Word Balloon, I'm joined by Jim McCann, a creator whose career spans stylish indie storytelling and major superhero runs, and he's back with something new. Jim joins me to talk about The Other Half, his brand-new detective comic from Ignition Press. It's a sharp, modern homage to the high-society sleuths of the 1930s and '40s. Very much in the tradition of Nick and Nora Charles, where glamour, wit, and mystery collide. We dig into the tone of the book, the appeal of that classic era, and how Jim updates the form without losing its elegance. We also look back at Jim's Eisner Award–winning graphic novel Return of the Dapper Men, his time at Marvel Comics writing Hawkeye & Mockingbird, and his years working behind the scenes as Marvel's marketing director. It's a wide-ranging conversation about craft, career pivots, and why some styles, and some stories...never go out of fashion.
