In this episode of Rock ‘n Roll Birder, I'm joined by The Early Birder for a winter UK birding adventure at Deeping Lakes (Lincolnshire) — searching for one of Britain's most secretive birds: the Long-eared Owl.We talk owl roosting behaviour, what makes Long-eared Owls so hard to find, and why Deeping Lakes has become a brilliant spot for birdwatchers hoping for a proper owl encounter. But it's not just about owls — we also dive into the obsession that takes over every birder at the start of the year: year lists, big years, target species, patch birding, and how you stay motivated when you're chasing new birds and the list slows down. Another heartfelt plea to bring Savannah Gutherie's mother home, this time from her brother. The video comes as we learn more about the ransom note which was allegedly emailed to three news organizations. It reportedly starts by letting the family know that Nancy Guthrie is doing ok but scared. Jim Moret begins our coverage from Tucson. And the thought of an 84-year-old woman with health issues being held against her will for almost a week has many worried for Nancy Guthrie. Experts say women of her age are more resilient than you think and say we shouldn't give up hope. Plus, in the United States, the arctic blast is firmly in place. Lakes around the country are freezing over. Ann Mercogliano reports that despite the warnings many can't resist walking on ice. And it's hard to imagine the anguish Savannah Guthrie and her family are going through, but these two dads know firsthand. They both found themselves at the center of very public, huge, national investigations involving their family. Now, they're speaking with Jim Moret. We were joined this week by a loyal listener and a true Swiftie from day one: Chelsea Dexter! Chelsea shares with us her Swiftie back story and all the Taylor Swift concerts she's attended (Fearless AND Reputation AND Eras Tour? JEALOUS!!). She even gets to boast that she won Taylor Swift Trivia at her local pub! Needelss to say, Chelsea brings so much to our conversation this week about a song that she absolutely loves. The Lake District and the poets it inspired is the perfect setting for the closing track off the folklore album. Oh but wait, it's not technically the closing track, is it? We certainly have some thoughts about that. One thing that really got us about this song was whether or not Taylor is feeling sad and melancholic, or if she was actually extending a romantic gesture towards one London Boy. Chelsea's takes on the "name dropping sleaze" Taylor sings about is particularly curious, especially when taking in consideration Taylor's performance of this song during the Long Pond Studio Sessions. There's just so much to unpack with this song and we had such a great time tackling it with Chelsea!Share with us your thoughts on today's episode by sending an email to swiftandswigspodcast@gmail.com.Leave us a written review on the Apple Podcasts app!Follow and rate our podcast on Spotify! I Wanted A Fancy Studio, Got A Living Room, And Accidentally Built A CommunityWhat happens when the person who built the room for everyone else's story finally sits in the guest chair? Jessica LeGare - former podcast guest and guest host - opens up the door to Kelly's living-room studio and traces the path from a drying mortgage pipeline and a growing family to a mission-driven show that helps mothers and entrepreneurs reclaim their color, voice, and courage. We explore the real start line: fear of hosting solo after co-hosted shows, the practical constraints that killed the fancy studio dream, and the surprising benefits of welcoming guests into a warm home where walls come down and stories breathe. Kelly unpacks the flamingo-pink metaphor—how motherhood and business can drain your hue—and how daily choices, faith, and community bring it back. Along the way, she reveals the unromantic backbone of podcasting: systems, editing decisions, consistent cadence, and simple gear that actually works. The takeaway is equal parts strategic and soulful: build SOPs, protect long-form depth, and choose formats you can sustain.Themes that show up across 80+ interviews get a spotlight: pivots and leap-of-faith decisions, the tension between perfectionism and progress, and the quiet grief of outgrowing old circles while forming a truer tribe. We talk about boundaries, sponsorships that match the mission, and a bolder vision that still feels personal. Kelly shares her “bookend” self-care—morning prayer, short reflections, nervous-system resets—that keep the creative well full when schedules and toddlers collide. If you've been searching for a grounded guide to podcasting, identity, and women's entrepreneurship, this conversation feels like a hand on your shoulder and a nudge forward. If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a powerhouse mama who needs a lift, and leave a quick review to help more women find their color again. So in December Nick O'Hern made a comment about 'smelly opening holes', in other words those opening holes that you just feel uncomfortable on. So today, we thought we'd discuss a few notable ones - obviously it's, generally, unique to each person of course. However the #1 smelliest opening hole is one that both Nick and Mark are in vigorous agreement on - and that is The Lakes in Sydney. They explain why, and discuss a couple of difficult experiences there.Mark lists off a couple of other Australian courses with smelly opening holes, and one international. Nick lists a few international courses and one on Melbourne's sandbelt. One of Nick's, a US course, was not only about the opening hole but the entire course ! And one was a course where he played a US Open at, finishing 20th, with an opening hole he just did not enjoy. And it provides an opportunity for Nick to tell us the story about the one time in his pro career he was DQ'd, and another Tour Pro was (in part) to blame. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club. McDonald's finally has the green light to build its golden arches in Wanaka, more than two years after first floating the idea. The fast-food giant's secured consent for a new restaurant in the town's Three Parks commercial area. It's almost a year after an earlier proposal was knocked back amid widespread public opposition. Queenstown Lakes Deputy Mayor Quentin Smith told Mike Hosking the bid might've gone through first time if McDonald's had aimed for a commercial zone from the start. While there may not be great whites in the great lakes, Canada has been subject to 29 recorded shark attacks in its history. But some of these attacks or incidents have been called into question. Whether it be due to a lack of evidence or simply appearing too crazy to be true, the most controversial shark attacks in Canadian history are worth talking about. For three decades following World War II, the Great Lakes overtook Europe as the epicenter of global economic strength. The region was the beating heart of the world economy, possessing all the power and prestige Silicon Valley does today. And no ship represented the apex of the American Century better than the 729-foot-long Edmund Fitzgerald―the biggest, best, and most profitable ship on the Lakes. But on November 10, 1975, as the “storm of the century” threw one hundred mile-per-hour winds and 50-foot waves on Lake Superior, the Mighty Fitz found itself at the worst possible place, at the worst possible time. When she sank, she took all twenty-nine men onboard down with her, leaving the tragedy shrouded in mystery for a half century. In The Gales of November, award-winning journalist John U. Bacon presents the definitive account of the disaster, drawing on more than one hundred interviews with the families, friends, and former crewmates of those lost. Bacon explores the vital role Great Lakes shipping played in America's economic boom, the uncommon lives the sailors led, the sinking's most likely causes, and the heartbreaking aftermath for those left behind―"the wives, the sons, and the daughters,” as Gordon Lightfoot sang in his unforgettable ballad.Focused on those directly affected by the tragedy, The Gales of November is both an emotional tribute to the lives lost and a propulsive, page-turning narrative history of America's most-mourned maritime disaster. https://www.amazon.com/Gales-November-Untold-Edmund-Fitzgerald/dp/1324094648http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

In this final episode of our Orlando series for States of Discovery, we explore an entirely different side of Orlando—one that goes far beyond theme parks and into the heart of Central Florida's adventure, charm, and creativity. This itinerary-packed episode blends outdoor thrills, scenic waterways, small-town flavor, and immersive fun into one unforgettable journey. The day kicks off in Clermont at Revolution Adventures, a 230-acre off-road park where guests climb into amphibious Mucky Duck vehicles to tackle muddy trails, splash through water crossings, and experience Florida's wild side firsthand. It's high-energy, hands-on, and a surprisingly rugged way to start the day. From there, the pace shifts to the water with Catboat Escapes on the Clermont Chain of Lakes. Piloting your own catamaran-style boat, you glide through open lakes, winding cypress tunnels, and moss-draped wetlands. When a storm blew in, we experienced a different side of the lake, one that got us soaking wet.Lunch brings us to Twenty Pho Hour, a MICHELIN-recommended, 2D-style noodle bar that perfectly represents Orlando's creative food scene. The episode wraps up with a festive stay at Villatel Orlando Resort during Hallowee-kends, featuring haunted villas, spooky movie nights, themed cocktails, and family-friendly frights.
