Following on from last episode's exploration of intentional use of productivity tools, this episode we take some time to look at calendars. When used intentionally and with care, a calendar can provide valuable structure and a plan for investing your limited time, attention and energy. However, the calendar is instead often a source of anxiety and overwhelm.  Calendars are the tools we use to manage various commitments. In this episode, I make the distinction between the commitments we make to others and the commitments we make to others. Our calendars work best when they reflect how we want to invest our time in priorities and the activities that really matter. AFC dropped a bomb last week with the announcement that it was abandoning the bidding process for the 2031 & 2035 AFC Asian Cups. Ask most consultants who their dream client is. One of two things happens.They're stumped. The question surprises them. Some have a general sense of who they work with, but a specific dream client? They've never seriously gone there.Or they know the answer immediately. And then they follow it with "but that's not realistic."Both responses come from the same place: the belief that access isn't something you control. So either you don't bother defining the target, or you define it and immediately talk yourself out of it.That belief is doing more damage to your pipeline than any tactic could fix. Melisa challenges it directly, and then walks through three real examples of how consultants found workable paths to clients they'd written off as out of reach.You don't need a perfect path in. You need a workable one. A few years ago, I read a book that made me think it was reading my mind. In the introduction, the author asks: Do you ever feel like you're running faster but not moving any closer to your goals? Do you want to make a higher contribution but you lack the energy? Are you teetering right on the edge of burnout? I wrote, "Yes, yes, yes!" next to each question in the margin of my copy. The book is Effortless by Greg McKeown, and it's the follow-up to his first book Essentialism, which I talked about in last week's episode.
