Historically, the celebration of Christmas and Carnival could overlap, and there is some reason to believe that customs associated with the former were inherited by the latter. A clue to this calendrical shift is offered by the Christmas song, “Carol of the Bells,” which uses the melody of an old Ukrainian New Year;s carol, one which dates back to the era in which New Year was celebrated in March (hence the springtime imagery of its original Ukrainian lyrics). Ukrainian postcard commemorating the folk song”Shchedryk” source of “Carol of the Bells” After a brief look at the variable date chosen to celebrate the New Year throughout European history, we take some time to rethink our modern understanding of what constitutes the Christmas season. The common notion that the season ends on December 25 or January 1, possibly including the weeks leading up to those dates, in historical understanding, was reversed, with Dec. 25 representing the start of Christmastide, which at the very least ran until Epiphany (Jan. 6) or Candlemas (Feb. 2). The merger of Christmas and Carnival is not only aided by the historically later end date of Christmastide, but also the variable start date for Carnival. A number of regional dates preferred for those festivities are discussed with Germany’s initiation of festivities on November 11 being the earliest. Another reason to suspect that Carnival inherited some of its customs from Carnival is the carnivalesque quality of the Christmas Feast of Fools celebrated anywhere from Dec. 26 to January 6. The wild, and sometimes dangerous revels celebrated on those days (and discussed in Episode 100) were ended by local bishops at roughly the same time that Carnival celebrations in France and Germany emerged, suggesting re-channeling of anarchic impulses and customs. Our discussion then turns to the Roman New Year, the January Kalends, which likely inspired chaotic elements around the Feast of Fools. Of particular interest here are accounts of celebrants dressing in animal hides and horns. a custom that seems to have survived in certain Carnival traditions, including a number discussed in my Carnival book. One of these, the Kurent of Slovenia, who happens to be rather similar to the Austrian Krampus across the country’s northern border. In Western Bulgaria too, another Carnival figure, the Kuker, in western regions also makes use of animal hides and horns (as well as bells). Bulgaria also provides us with an interesting 20th-century case study of the merger of the traditions of Christmas (or “Surva,” the Bulgarian New Year) merging with springtime fertility customs of Carnival, both strands being associated with the Kuker. We wrap up with a brief look at Slavic celebrations of the Christmas cycle as Koliade (various spellings), a name for Christmastide and the customs associated with it, particularly door-to-door “good luck visits” incorporating short plays and songs, kolyadka in Ukrainian, the original of “Carol of the Bells” (Shchedryk/”Bountiful Evening”) being one of these songs “New Year’s Carols” (Kolędnicy noworoczni) from “A Polish Year in Life, Tradition and Song” (1900). The sources for this show are Mr. Ridenour’s books The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas and A Season of Madness, Fools, Monsters, and Marvels of the Old-World Carnival.
December fills up fast. Calendars get crowded. Schedules get packed. And without meaning to, Jesus often ends up with whatever space is left. The Christmas story tells us there was no room in Bethlehem. Not because people rejected Jesus, but because life was already full. That same pattern still shapes our lives today. In this message, Make Room for Jesus, we explore:• Why busyness and hurry crowd out Christ• How cluttered lives miss holy moments• What it means to slow down and open space for God• Why making room isn't about doing more, but clearing space• How surrender, service, generosity, and even baptism are ways we open the door to ChristThis sermon is for anyone who feels overwhelmed, distracted, spiritually tired, or longing for something deeper this Christmas season.Jesus still stands at the door and knocks. The question is simple: Will we make room?#MakeRoomForJesus#ChristmasSermon#Advent#FaithAndLife#SpiritualFormation#ChristianYouTube#SermonClip#JesusAtTheCenter#SlowDown#ChurchOnline#ChristianLiving#PrepareHimRoom#BibleTeaching#GospelMessage

Get ready for Episode 189 of On the Delo as David DeLorenzo reconnects with designer and founder Dala for a real, behind-the-scenes conversation on motherhood, leadership, and building a boutique hospitality design firm that actually supports life outside of work. From early episodes recorded in a conference room to a thriving studio with 12 team members, Dala opens up about how becoming a mom, facing an early breast cancer diagnosis, and scaling House of Form have sharpened her focus on time, team, and purpose.Dala shares how “$1 tasks,” choosing CEO over designer, and building the right leadership layer allowed her to step out of the day-to-day and into higher-value work, all while expanding from food and beverage into hotels, multifamily, branding, retail, and events. The two dig into why thoughtful design is a business tool—not a luxury extra—for restaurants and hospitality concepts, plus how Off the Menu, her nonprofit for emerging F&B concepts, is now supporting founders across the country with mentorship and grants. If you're a restaurateur, hospitality operator, or creative entrepreneur trying to grow without burning out, this episode delivers tactical insight, honest reflection, and plenty of laughs.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:00 - 3:13) Four Years Later: Return to the Pod and Episode 189(3:14 - 8:45) From Two Employees to Twelve: Team Growth, New Verticals, and Culture at House of Form(8:46 - 16:55) Systems, AI, and One-of-One Design: How Dala Scales Creativity Without Losing Soul(16:56 - 22:30) Off the Menu and Early Detection: Nonprofit Impact and Dala's Breast Cancer Journey(22:31 - 29:54) Projects, PV Mall, and A Week in the Life of a Mom-CEO(29:55 - 39:58) Travel, Calendars, Spa Dreams, and What Really Recharges Dala

Between 1847–1933, the Mayan fought a long and bloody war against the government of Mexico, and for a while controlled an independent state. When I think about the kind of parent I want to be, I often think about my dad—steady, grounding, and always there. His quiet consistency has shaped so much of how I show up for my own children. And that's why Glen Henry's new book, Father Yourself First: Everything You Need to Become the Father Your Family Deserves, caught my attention. Even though Glen wrote this book for fathers, the message is one every parent needs: to be a steady presence for our children, we first have to become our own source of stability. This conversation will help you see your partner—and yourself—with more empathy. It's an honest, funny look at what happens when we slow down, let each other learn, and create a home where everyone is growing. Plus, you'll also hear:
Parents are increasingly relying on elaborate calendar systems to keep track of their families' activities – from a shared calendar or paper planner to high-end devices that can create a calendar for you by scraping data from your emails. Some parents say it helps them better involve their teen children in scheduling their lives; for others, they feel themselves becoming beholden to their calendars – a draconian digital personal assistant.Zosia Bielski is The Globe's time use reporter. THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Feeling busier and more distracted than last year? You're not imagining it—and you're not powerless. This guide turns a simple "peg" memory method into a fast, executive-friendly workflow you can use on the spot. Why do we forget more at work—and what actually helps right now? We forget because working memory is tiny and modern work shreds attention; the fix is to externalise what you can and anchor what you can't. As channels multiply—email, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Line, Telegram—messages blur and retrieval costs explode. First, move details out of your head and into calendars, task apps, and checklists. Second, when you must recall live (presentations, Q&A, pitches), use a method that forces order on demand. That's where "peg numbers + peg words + peg pictures" wins: it's fast, portable, and doesn't depend on a screen. Do now: Decide which meetings require live recall versus notes-on-desk. Use tools for storage; use pegs for performance. What is the Peg Method—and why does it work under pressure? The Peg Method gives you nine permanent "hooks" (1–9) that never change; you hang today's items on those hooks using vivid mini-scenes. Consistency is the trick. When the pegs stay fixed, recall becomes automatic: say the peg, see the picture, retrieve the item—in order. This scales from shopping lists to leadership talking points, risk registers, and sales objections during a live demo. Executives like it because it's device-free, language-agnostic, and works whether you're in Tokyo, Sydney, or Seattle. Do now: Lock your baseline pegs today so they never change: 1 = Run, 2 = Zoo, 3 = Tree, 4 = Door, 5 = Hive, 6 = Sick, 7 = Heaven, 8 = Gate, 9 = Wine. How do I build pictures that "stick" in seconds? Use A-C-M-E: Action, Colour, Me, Exaggeration—three-second scenes beat perfect ones. Give each peg-scene movement (Action), crank the saturation (Colour), put yourself in the frame (Me), and overdo scale or drama (Exaggeration). You don't need to "see" it like a film; a whispered line works ("Door: Johanna blocks sign-off"). Across markets, this reduces blank-outs because your brain encodes motion, salience, and self-relevance faster than abstract text. Do now: Practise with two items right now—peg #1 Run and #2 Zoo—timing yourself to three seconds per image. Can pegs really keep a long list in order? (Worked example) Yes—because the order is baked into the numbers, you can recite forwards, backwards, or jump to any slot. Try this city sequence: Sydney, Toronto, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Seattle, London, Mumbai, Vladivostok, Kagoshima. 1 Run: sprint alongside a kangaroo (Sydney) with a starter pistol; 2 Zoo: monkeys hurl "Toronto" nameplates; 3 Tree: a palm bends under a "São Paulo" sash; 4 Door: "Johannesburg" is painted thick across a revolving door; 5 Hive: bees wear "Seattle" face masks; 6 Sick: a syringe squirts the word "London"; 7 Heaven: "Mumbai" descends pearl-white stairs; 8 Gate: a rail gate slams down with "Vladivostok"; 9 Wine: a crate stamped "Kagoshima." Do now: Recite pegs in rhythm—run, zoo, tree, door…—then replay the scenes. Test #7 or #4 out of order to prove the jump-to-slot works. What if I'm "not visual," get confused, or blank on stage? Say the peg aloud and attach a one-line cue; keep pegs permanent; rehearse forwards and backwards. If imagery feels fuzzy, talk it: "Tree: São Paulo sash." The rhyme is your safety rail. Confusion usually comes from changing pegs—don't. Under pressure, we default to habits; two short reps (forward/back) create enough redundancy to survive a curve-ball question. If lists exceed nine, chunk them (1–9, 10–18) or create a second peg set for a different category (e.g., "Client Risks"). Do now: Lock your 1–9; rehearse your next briefing once forward, once backward, standing up to simulate pressure. How do I integrate pegs with my 2025 workflow without more cognitive load? Use a two-lane system: tools for storage and pegs for performance; tag owners and dates inside the images to encode accountability. Calendars, CRMs, and project trackers still carry due dates, attachments, and threads. Pegs handle what you must say from memory: topline metrics, names, objections, decisions. For leadership teams across APAC, EU, and North America, this reduces meeting drag and hedges against tech hiccups. Pro tip: weave critical metadata into the scene ("Door: Sarah blocks approval until Friday 17:00"). Do now: Pick one recurring meeting and move its opening five points to pegs; keep everything else in your agenda doc. Conclusion: design around your brain, don't fight it Your brain isn't failing—you're asking it to juggle too much in noisy environments. Externalise the bulk; anchor the rest with nine permanent pegs and A-C-M-E pictures. In a week, the "snap-back" effect appears: you say the peg, the scene plays, and the item drops into place—without the stress. Do now: Lock pegs 1–9, run the five-minute drill today, and use pegs for your very next high-stakes conversation. Today we go deep on throuples—what makes a three-person relationship (triad) work in real life. Our guest is Dr. Rachael Meir, a Stanford-trained psychologist, sex & relationship coach, author of 50 Questions to Ask Before Opening Your Relationship, and host of retreats designed specifically for throuples. In this episode (throuple-forward): • Shapes of throuples: V vs. closed triad, the “everyone dates everyone” myth, and why symmetry isn't the only path to stability. • Avoiding triangles (the bad kind): How to reduce coalitions, secret alliances, and “two against one” dynamics with simple, predictable check-ins. • Jealousy in 3s: Why jealousy feels different in a triad, Dr. Meir's “dashboard warning light” frame, and how to respond without spiraling. • Differentiation = less codependence: Staying three whole people (not one fused blob) actually strengthens the connection between all of you. • Logistics that keep love humane: Calendars, re-entry rituals, and short “state-of-us” huddles so no one becomes the project manager (or the parent). • Ethics & invitations: Power imbalances, “unicorn hunting,” and creating consent that's real for all three partners—not just the original pair. • Retreat lessons: What Dr. Meir sees thriving throuples do differently (language, expectations, and how they handle NRE without breaking the triangle).Plus, we pull 5 key prompts from Dr. Meir's book to ground any non-monogamy journey: • What desires/needs do I believe non-monogamy could fulfill (for me, not just my partner)? • Do I have enough self-esteem to stay out of comparison traps? • Are we differentiated—two/three whole people with overlap—rather than merged? • Are we opening to fill a void/fix a problem (and what would repair look like first)? • What small agreements would make us feel safer without turning into surveillance?Big takeaways you can use tonight • Trade control for clarity: one short weekly check-in beats constant play-by-play. • Re-entry rituals after solo or third-partner time keep connection warm and resentment low. • In triads, fairness ≠ sameness—aim for dignity for all three, not equal minutes.Find Dr. Meir: https://www.drrachaelmeir.com/Naughty Gym: https://www.naughtygym.com/

Even without new comprehensive privacy laws passed in 2025, regulators have kept busy. California finalized major CCPA updates—introducing risk assessments, cybersecurity audits, and automated decision-making rules—while amendments and new state laws in Maryland, Indiana, Kentucky, and Rhode Island take effect soon. Colorado also extended the deadline for its AI Act. This episode breaks down what's changing, when key obligations begin, and why businesses need to start mapping their compliance timelines now. Hosted by Simone Roach. Based on a blog post by Aaron J. Burstein, Alexander I. Schneider, and Meaghan M. Donahue
We all lose our temper sometimes. That's part of being human—and part of being a mom. But what happens next matters most. Because repair, not perfection, is what builds real trust with our kids. In this week's episode, I'm joined by Devon Kuntzman from Transforming Toddlerhood to talk about one of the most healing and hopeful skills a parent can learn: how to reconnect after those hard moments. Devon shares a simple, four-step framework for circling back after we've yelled or overreacted—so instead of getting stuck in guilt, we can model accountability, empathy, and growth. Even though Devon primarily teaches parents of toddlers, this conversation applies beautifully to kids of all ages (trust me—my teen and tween are proof!). In this episode, you'll learn:

Organize October happening now: simplyconvivial.com/october | Calendars only work if they're kept accurate—and in real life, that takes iteration and flexibility. In this Simply Convivial podcast episode, Mystie Winckler talks with Convivial Circle mentor member Michelle Arencebia about how she keeps calendars updated in busy family life.Michelle shares how linking calendars with her husband and adult children cut down on confusion, why she enters events right on her phone the moment she hears about them, and how she uses weekly dashboards and interval calendars to keep the bigger picture in view.We also talk about:What to do when other people don't update the shared calendarHow vocation shapes what belongs on the calendarWhy iteration matters more than the “perfect” planner systemUsing alignment cards as quick reminders when life doesn't go to planWhether you use Google Calendar, a wall calendar, or a printable dashboard, the point is to keep it simple, stay cheerful, and keep adjusting.

The pursuit of viral fame on TikTok has created a dark undercurrent in the world of true crime. This episode exposes the alarming pattern of TikTok stars hiding violent reality behind their polished online personas, leading to shocking consequences. We examine crimes intertwined with the app, some happening right now in 2025. We dive into the chilling, developing case of musician D4vd (David Anthony Burke). His rise to fame with the hit song "Romantic Homicide" was shattered when the decomposed body of 15-year-old runaway Celeste Rivas Hernandez was found in his Tesla in the Hollywood Hills. Viral Lives, Violent Ends: Other TikTok True Crimes D4vd's story is not an isolated incident. The pressure to maintain a perfect online image has driven others to commit unthinkable acts: JinnKid (Ali Abulaban): The double murder committed by influencer Ali Abulaban (JinnKid). He used a listening app on his five-year-old daughter's iPad to spy on his estranged wife, Ana, before executing her and her friend, Rayburn Barron. The Bukhari Murders: The ruthless blackmail and double murder plot involving UK mother-daughter TikTok duo Mahek Bukhari and Ansreen Bukhari. They killed two victims, Saqib Hussain and Hashim Ijazuddin, to protect Mahek's influencer career and their reputation. Sarah Grace Patrick: The manipulative case of a 17-year-old who used TikTok to post grieving videos after allegedly murdering her own parents, all while secretly pitching her family's tragedy to true crime influencers and bloggers. This episode examines how technology has become a double-edged sword, creating new motives for murder and giving people tools for manipulation and deception. Thank you to this week's sponsors! Have you noticed that since school started, your afternoons feel more chaotic? Maybe your child walks in the door, drops their backpack, and bursts into tears—or lashes out over the smallest thing. It can leave you wondering if something is wrong with them…or with you. The truth is, what you're seeing is incredibly common. In fact, there's even a name for it: restraint collapse. After holding it together all day at school, kids often come home to the one place where they feel safe enough to release all the emotions they've been bottling up. And while it can be overwhelming to parent through these meltdowns, there are simple, practical ways to help them regulate and recharge. In this encore episode, I'm joined by Alyssa Blask Campbell, an educator, researcher, and founder of Seed & Sew. Alyssa explains why after-school meltdowns are so common and offers doable strategies you can put into place right away to help your afternoons feel calmer and more connected. In this conversation, you'll learn:

Timestamp to skip to the case" (5:12) Canadian man Robert William Pickton is a serial killer also known as ‘The Pig Farmer' or ‘The Butcher.' He and his brother were raised by their parents on a pig farm that was described as a ‘creepy looking place.' A 600lb (275kg) boar roamed freely around the farm. When Robert's parents died, he and his siblings inherited the pig farm. Under the guise of throwing huge parties, Robert lured many vulnerable women to the property. From the 1990's onward, more than 60 women disappeared from the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Robert would end up confessing to the murder of 49 women. He ended up being convicted of 6 of those. They discuss understanding emotions as data, validating kids' feelings without overindulging them, and building emotional literacy for the whole family.Get the Good Inside App by Dr. Becky: https://bit.ly/4fSxbzkYour Good Inside membership might be eligible for HSA/FSA reimbursement! If you are, more power to you. I'm more of a “grab-and-go” type - I want something simple, nutritious, and easy for my kids to reach for as we're heading out the door. That's why I like Chomps. Their full-size meat sticks have 10 grams of protein and zero sugar. They're filling and made from real ingredients, so it's one less thing to think about. And if you've ever opened your kid's backpack to find a half-eaten snack from who-knows-when still wrapped up in there, Chomplings are great. They're smaller sticks (the right size to toss in a lunchbox or that little front backpack pocket) with 4 grams of protein and zero sugar.Chomps are made of high-quality ingredients like 100% grass-fed beef, venison, and antibiotic-free turkey. They're also free from the top nine allergens, so you don't have to worry about sending them to school.Check out all the sizes and delicious flavors at Chomps.com/DRBECKY for 15% off plus free shippingThere's always a moment - maybe two weeks into the school year - where I stop and think: “Wait, wasn't summer just five minutes ago?”Suddenly, we're back in the rush of packing lunches, signing permission slips, and struggling to find a pair of matching socks every morning. That's why I've started looking ahead to fall breaks now - before the long-weekend creeps up on me and feels less like a break, and more like being stuck at home for three days with three kids!My go-to for quick getaways? Booking an Airbnb. It's a reset that still feels like home: games and toys for the kids, a big living room for family movie nights, and even bunk beds that kids claim are “way better than our beds at home.”Plus, do you ever think about how you can host your own home on Airbnb for another family to enjoy while you're away? It's a great way to earn a little extra income to put towards your own trip, school supplies, or next season's cleats. Your home might be worth more than you think. Find out how much at airbnb.com/host.As parents, the mental load is real—to-do lists, doctor's appointments, sports practices, work events, birthday parties…” (pause) Should I keep going? The Power of Confessions According to the Innocence Project, nearly 30% of wrongful convictions overturned by DNA evidence involved false confessions. This number is even more alarming for juveniles, as 69% of those aged 12 to 15 who were falsely convicted had made a false confession. Research shows that jurors convict people who have confessed more than 70% of the time, even if the confession is proven false. Case 1: Robert Durst Robert Durst, heir to a New York real estate fortune, was suspected in three suspicious deaths: his wife Kathie Durst, his best friend Susan Berman, and his neighbor Morris Black. He became the subject of the HBO documentary series, The Jinx. In a stunning turn of events, a hot mic captured Durst muttering, "What the heck did I do? Killing them all, of course," which became an infamous confession. He was arrested the night before the finale of the series aired and was later convicted of first-degree murder for Susan Berman's death. Case 2: Henry Lee Lucas Known as the "Confession Killer," Henry Lee Lucas confessed to hundreds of murders he didn't commit. After being arrested for illegal firearm possession, he began confessing to dozens, and then hundreds, of unsolved murders across the country. Law enforcement created the "Lucas Task Force" and closed more than 200 cold cases based on his confessions. However, a journalist later exposed that Lucas couldn't have committed many of the crimes due to conflicting timelines. The false confessions misled families who were desperately seeking closure, and the real killers remained free. Case 3: Laverne Pavlinac Laverne Pavlinac fabricated a story and confessed to a murder she didn't commit to frame her abusive boyfriend, John. She hoped it would send him to prison and free her from their volatile relationship. Despite John denying any involvement, Laverne's detailed confession led to both of them being convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. While they were in jail, the real killer, Keith Hunter Jesperson, later known as the Happy Face Killer, continued his killing spree. Case 4: Earl Valentine After shooting his ex-wife Keisha and their son Earl Jr., Earl Valentine went live on Facebook to confess to the crime. He stated, "I just killed my wife. I don't feel any remorse for what I did". This real-time confession went viral before being removed, raising urgent questions about technology and domestic violence. Keisha survived, but their son Earl Jr. died from his injuries after calling 911. Case 5: Mark "Chopper" Read Mark "Chopper" Read was a notorious Australian gangster, author, and comedian who was never convicted of murder. However, just 16 days before his death from liver cancer, he gave a final interview and confessed to killing four men. Despite his history of exaggeration, police reviewed his claims. To this day, questions remain about the sincerity of his deathbed confession, with many believing it was his last act of showmanship.

In this episode of The Bible for Normal People, Pete and Nerd-in-Residence Cynthia are joined by Bill Schniedewind to discuss who really wrote the Bible. Bill explains how different scribal communities each left their own mark on the texts they were writing, and how the diversity of the Bible's human authors reflects the beauty and richness of the text itself. In September of 1922, scandal rocked the quiet town of New Brunswick, New Jersey. A beloved minister and a choir singer were found posed side by side beneath a crab apple tree, their love letters torn and scattered like confetti. What might have looked like a tragic romance gone wrong quickly spiraled into one of the most sensational murder cases of the Jazz Age. At the center of it all? A wealthy wife, her eccentric butterfly-collecting brother, and a witness the press only ever called the Pig Woman. Yes, really. Thank you to this week's sponsors!
