This number is even more alarming for juveniles, as 69% of those aged 12 to 15 who were falsely convicted had made a false confession. Research shows that jurors convict people who have confessed more than 70% of the time, even if the confession is proven false. Case 1: Robert Durst Robert Durst, heir to a New York real estate fortune, was suspected in three suspicious deaths: his wife Kathie Durst, his best friend Susan Berman, and his neighbor Morris Black. He became the subject of the HBO documentary series, The Jinx. In a stunning turn of events, a hot mic captured Durst muttering, "What the heck did I do? Killing them all, of course," which became an infamous confession. He was arrested the night before the finale of the series aired and was later convicted of first-degree murder for Susan Berman's death. Case 2: Henry Lee Lucas Known as the "Confession Killer," Henry Lee Lucas confessed to hundreds of murders he didn't commit. After being arrested for illegal firearm possession, he began confessing to dozens, and then hundreds, of unsolved murders across the country. Law enforcement created the "Lucas Task Force" and closed more than 200 cold cases based on his confessions. However, a journalist later exposed that Lucas couldn't have committed many of the crimes due to conflicting timelines. The false confessions misled families who were desperately seeking closure, and the real killers remained free. Case 3: Laverne Pavlinac Laverne Pavlinac fabricated a story and confessed to a murder she didn't commit to frame her abusive boyfriend, John. She hoped it would send him to prison and free her from their volatile relationship. Despite John denying any involvement, Laverne's detailed confession led to both of them being convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. While they were in jail, the real killer, Keith Hunter Jesperson, later known as the Happy Face Killer, continued his killing spree. Case 4: Earl Valentine After shooting his ex-wife Keisha and their son Earl Jr., Earl Valentine went live on Facebook to confess to the crime. He stated, "I just killed my wife. I don't feel any remorse for what I did". This real-time confession went viral before being removed, raising urgent questions about technology and domestic violence. Keisha survived, but their son Earl Jr. died from his injuries after calling 911. Case 5: Mark "Chopper" Read Mark "Chopper" Read was a notorious Australian gangster, author, and comedian who was never convicted of murder. However, just 16 days before his death from liver cancer, he gave a final interview and confessed to killing four men. Despite his history of exaggeration, police reviewed his claims. To this day, questions remain about the sincerity of his deathbed confession, with many believing it was his last act of showmanship.

Dean Corll lived in the area and worked for the family company, Corll Candy Company.  In 1970, he began a three-year killing spree, along with his accomplices David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley. All of their victims were males, aged between 13-20.  The three men tortured and abused their victims before viciously murdering them. Their rampage ended in 1973 when Elmer killed Dean following an altercation.  He called police and said "Y'all better come here right now! I just killed a man!" Skip straight to the case: (10:35) In October 2024, six members of the Humiston family were sleeping peacefully in their beds in Fall City, Washington.   Parents Sarah and Mark lived in a beautiful lake-front home with their five children - aged between 7 and 15. Sarah and Mark had been having some troubles with their eldest son, who we will call  ‘A'.   He had been caught viewing inappropriate images online and had been struggling with his school work.   On October 21, 2024, A retrieved a gun from the family's gun safe.   He then allegedly shot every single member of his family.  He believed they were all dead and he called 911.  He told dispatchers that his younger brother Benjamin had carried out the massacre before taking his own life. A was incorrect in thinking that his whole family was dead.   His 11 y/o sister had played dead after he shot her and she managed to run to a neighboring property to ask for help.  She told authorities the true story.    In August 2025, new court documents were filed that indicate the Humiston parents were controlling and isolated their children from the community.   “A common theme that has been expressed amongst extended family, neighbors, and those who knew the Humistons is that the children were isolated from the outside world and did not engage socially with many peers – only a select few families that went to their church and were friends of their family,” court documents say. “Furthermore, initial reports indicate the home was abusive, tightly controlled, and dominated by extreme religious beliefs.” A has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.   A debate is currently ongoing in the legal system to determine if he will be tried as an adult or a juvenile. Timestamps: (7:58) - Stockdale Family In 2008, the Stockdale family from Ohio appeared on the reality TV show ‘Wife Swap.'  Kathy and Timothy Stockdale were raising their four sons in a very strict, conservative manner.   This is an excerpt from the family manual Kathy prepared for ‘Wife Swap.'  We moved to the country to get the boys away from the city. Our children are being raised away from violent language, sexual influences, drinking, smoking, drugs, rap music all the things we left behind in the city. Instead we are raising our children on a diet of wholesome activities and farm work; keeping their minds pure and their bodies healthy and keeping out the influences of modern society. That is why we home-school. By 2017, two of the children remained in the family home - Jacob and James.  One day that year, while Timothy was at work, Jacob fatally shot his brother James and his mother Kathy.   He then attempted to take his own life by shooting himself in the head.  He survived and was hospitalised for many months. After he recovered, Jacob was charged with the murders of his mother and brother.   No motive for the killings has ever been revealed.
