“THE GARDEN OF ALLAH: COCKTAILS, SCANDALS & MISCHIEF” - 5/25/2026 (141) Once upon a time, there was a magical, decadent hotel in Hollywood where stars could avoid the scrutiny of the public and studio executives and really let their hair down. And, boy, did they! It was a place where there were no rules, there was a party every night, and the rich and famous could frolic carelessly around the pool - and sometimes in the pool, fully dressed. This magical place was the Garden of Allah — the brainchild of actress ALLA NAZIMOVA. This week, we will discuss the magic, the mystery, the decadence, and the debauchery of one of Hollywood's most famous hotels. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 27, 2026 is: dross • DRAHSS • noun Something referred to as "dross" is of low value or quality. Dross may also be used as a technical term to refer to unwanted material that is removed from a mineral to make it better. // He's a skilled editor who has a talent for turning literary dross into gold. See the entry > Examples: "Hollywood optimists argue that AI's greatest weakness will be originality. After all, viewers already complain of being deluged with formulaic, low-budget dross churned out by streaming platforms because an algorithm deems it popular." — Tom Leonard, The Scottish Daily Mail, 23 Feb. 2026 Did you know? Dross has been a part of the English language since Anglo-Saxon times. It comes from the Old English word drōs, meaning "dregs," those solid materials that fall to the bottom of a container full of a liquid such as coffee or wine. While dross today is used to refer to anything of low value or quality, its earliest use is technical: dross is a metallurgy term referring to solid scum that forms on the surface of a metal when it is molten or melting—remove the dross to improve the metal. The metallurgical sense of the word is often hinted at in its general use, with dross set in contrast to gold, as when 19th century British poet Christina Rossetti wrote "Besides, those days were golden days, / Whilst these are days of dross."

Jackie Kay is one of the best known and most popular Scottish literary figures. A poet and novelist, she served as Makar - the name for Scotland's poet laureate - for five years from 2016. Since her debut poetry collection The Adoption Papers in 1991, she has published 20 works of fiction and verse for adults and children, and a memoir about meeting her biological parents called Red Dust Road. Jackie Kay was made a CBE for services to literature in 2020.Jackie talks to John Wilson about her childhood in Glasgow as the mixed-race, adopted daughter of a loving couple. From a young age, Jackie was entranced by the parties her parents hosted in their house to raise money for the Communist Party and where they would debate and sing songs. It was her first introduction to performance and theatre. As a teenager, hearing poets such as Tom Leonard and Liz Lochhead recite their own work also had a big impact on her literary aspirations.Growing up in the Glasgow of the 60s and 70s, Jackie had very few black role models and took inspiration from the work of the African American poet Audre Lorde and the American political activist Angela Davis. Jackie also recalls finding her birth parents and how a visit to her birth father's ancestral village in Nigeria finally gave her a sense of dual identity.Producer: Edwina PitmanOther poets who have appeared on This Cultural Life include Michael Rosen, Linton Kwesi Johnson and George The Poet, along with children's authors including Katherine Rundell and Michael Morpurgo. What does it take to transform a state facing serious economic and educational challenges? In this illuminating conversation, former Michigan House Speaker Tom Leonard outlines his vision for revitalizing Michigan as he campaigns for the governor's office.Michigan's struggles are starkly quantified—ranking 49th in unemployment, near last in population growth, and facing an education crisis where only 25% of fourth graders read at grade level. But Leonard sees tremendous untapped potential in the state's natural resources, research institutions, and hardworking citizens. "This state has all the ingredients it needs for success," he explains. "We just need the right recipe, the right policy, and the right leadership."Drawing from his experience as a prosecutor in Flint and his legislative accomplishments, Leonard presents specific solutions to Michigan's most pressing problems. His education plan draws inspiration from the "Mississippi Miracle" that transformed literacy rates through early assessment, targeted tutoring, and parental empowerment. For economic growth, he advocates reinstating right-to-work laws, implementing regulatory and licensure reform, and addressing the property tax burden that has many residents feeling "taxed out of their homes."The conversation goes beyond standard talking points to explore innovative approaches to healthcare, environmental justice, and criminal justice reform. Leonard makes a compelling case for telehealth expansion, highlighting how tele-mental health services could reach every Michigan teenager for just $6 million—compared to $600 million for traditional in-school counselors. He also addresses environmental cleanup of the Rouge River as both an ecological necessity and a matter of social justice.Throughout the discussion, Leonard emphasizes a positive, solutions-focused approach to governance that transcends partisan divides. "When a party is void of ideas, void of vision, and focused only on hatred of one person, they lose," he observes. His campaign offers an alternative centered on problem-solving and demonstrated success in bringing diverse stakeholders together.Ready to learn more about a vision for Michigan that prioritizes education, affordability, and opportunity? Nadia Marcinkova, also known as Nadia Marcinko, is a Slovakian-born pilot, flight instructor, and former model. She is the founder and CEO of Aviloop, an aviation marketing company. Marcinkova's association with Jeffrey Epstein began in the early 2000s when, as reported by multiple sources, she was brought to the United States as a teenager and became closely involved with Epstein. Over the years, she transitioned into roles such as a pilot for Epstein's private jet, often referred to as the "Lolita Express." Despite allegations of her involvement in Epstein's illicit activities, Marcinkova was granted immunity under Epstein's 2008 non-prosecution agreement. To contact me:Bobbycapucci@protonmail.com Source:https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8741007/TOM-LEONARD-asks-Nadia-Marcinkova-abused-abuser.htmlBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.
