Since then, he’s been an active member of the sport and Olympic community, serving as the President of the US Olympians Association and an organizer of the ANOC World Beach Games in San Diego in 2019. (ATR) Gunilla Lindberg talks about the preparations in San Diego for the games in 2019. (ATR) Plans for the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games move ahead following meetings in San Diego over the weekend. The Beach Games will take place in October 2019 with just under 2000 athletes competing in 15 disciplines. Athletes from as many as 206 National Olympic Committees could attend. For the seventh time since San Diego was selected in 2013 as the host for the debut Beach Games, a coordination commission from the Association of National Olympic Committees has visited San Diego to check on preparations. Those meetings were followed by visits from officials of the sports federations which will be staging events in San Diego. ANOC Secretary-General Gunilla Lindberg, IOC member in Sweden, led the team in its inspection over the past few days. She speaks with Around the Rings Editor Ed Hula from San Diego about her visit.

Willie is a former World Record Holder and Olympian, President and CEO of the ANOC World Beach Games and President of the US Olympians. Much of Willie’s fame comes from his innovative approach to sports and his exuberant personality that he brought to track and field competitions.  He is the originator of the now common hand clapping that takes place during many track and field events, which he talks about in true Willie style during our conversation. In 1999, Willie was inducted into the USA National Track and Field Hall of Fame and he still continues to compete to this day.
