Escape rooms have been providing a new form of play for much of this decade. At the same time, immersive theater has been providing a new form of storytelling. What happens when the two get mixed? In this episode, Emma and Gil are joined by Haley E.R. Cooper and J. Cameron Cooper of Strange Bird Immersive, who run the hybrid escape room/immersive theater piece The Man From Beyond, and the Immersology blog. How can escape rooms use immersive theater to tell a story? And how can we learn from that to better tell stories in our games? (Note: starting this episode, we are going to feature more detailed show notes of things we bring up in our conversation. That's especially important in this episode, as we refer to theater works that may not be well-known to others!) This week on the show, we interview Jeff Onofrio and Scott Nicholson. Two experienced mortgage professionals who have expertise in the renovation sector. Jeff is a seasoned and licensed mortgage professional who has been in the business since 1998. He has been running a team of successful loan officers since 2007. Scott is a mortgage professional located in Yorba Linda, California who specializes in renovation loan programs and jumbo financing options. Geoff and our guests start the interview by going over why renovation is a great area to specialize in and Jeff talks briefly about how the renovation sector is affected less by rate fluctuations and market forces than other areas. Scott discusses why people often place too much importance on the condition of a house when considering renovation. The guys then talk about why renovation is such a great tool for first time home buyers, with some examples from Jeff and Scott that demonstrate the opportunities that renovation can afford you. Setting the table for the renovation pitch is a tricky task, Jeff and Scott discuss how best to broach the subject with agent referrals, educate them on the topic and when to not oversell the option. This leads on to a discussion on the importance of communication with agents and eventually difference in opinion on coaching versus learning on the job, which itself is useful. A few of the other subjects we cover in this episode are, how the markets are changing due to technology, how an aging housing infrastructure can affect those markets, the three main types of renovation financial product and why you need to pay attention to legislation changes in your market. Finally, our guests talk briefly about their own ventures and give some predictions for The Masters before signing off. What you will learn in this episode: Why renovation is more resilient to market conditions than other areas of real estate. Why renovation is a great tool for new home buyers. How to ‘set the table’ for a renovation loan pitch and how to broach the subject with agent referrals. The pros and cons of coaching versus learning on the job. What are the three types of renovation loans and how they differ. Links from Todays Episode: Jeff’s # - 609 217 0409 Scott’s # - 562-225-0769 Ready to grow your business in the new year? Are businesses aware enough of security risks? Are businesses savvy enough? UKFast Data Security Round Table. Fears for whether or not businesses are savvy enough to identify the risks and consequences of security attacks proved to be of great concern to Scott Nicholson, Security Risk Analyst from data firm IBM. "It's inevitable that organisations will experience a breach, but it's how they're able to contain or identify that breach. "It's no longer a matter of installing a firewall or an IDS or IPS, it's how you can correlate all that data and try and detect the data tax and security architecture." Julian Stafford from The Midshire Group, spoke of his concern over the amount of personal data tech appliances in the office can hold, and that the biggest threat is the threat from inside an organisation. "The ignorance is staggering in terms of the potential threats. The vast majority of people don't know that the photocopier and printer in the office has a hard drive that stores every single document that's ever gone through it." Phil Smith, of Encryption Box agreed: "It's simple stuff that people don't know." This week's UKFast Round Table attendees were: Julian Stafford, Midshire Business Systems Scott Nicholson, IBM Matt Gladwin, Genting Casinos Andrew Powell, Price Waterhouse Coopers Terry Greer-King, Cisco Phil Smith, Encryption Box And the round table was chaired by Jonathan Bowers of UKFast.
Data Security Top Tips How do businesses protect themselves online in 2014 UKFast Data Security Round Table. According to research, tech companies, especially start-ups often seem to consider data security as an expensive add-on rather than something they work into their technology from the start. Terence Greer- King believes many organisations are not aware of the attacks they have been subjected to. He said: "Attacks are happening every day. Cisco has 2 million a day. "The average age of an undetected attack is 9 months. Attacks are getting through, data is being stolen and most organisations aren't even aware of it. "People should be well advised to go through security checks, and find out exactly what's taking place on their network now. There could be a number of attacks taking place and there most likely are." Scott Nicholson agreed: "Don't be under the false sense of security that if you're performing vulnerability scanning you're checking your secure configurations. You need that human intervention to be able to escalate the vulnerabilities that you've already got on your network." This week's UKFast Round Table attendees were: Julian Stafford, Midshire Businses Systems Scott Nicholson, IBM Matt Gladwin, Genting Casinos Andrew Powell, Price Waterhouse Coopers Terry Greer-King, Cisco Phil Smith, Encryption Box And the round table was chaired by Jonathan Bowers of UKFast.

Over the last 15 years, there has been an explosion of innovation in board game styles and mechanisms. The Settlers of Catan was the game that crossed the ocean from Germany to the U.S. in the late 1990′s and kicked off this new era in board gaming. These modern board games, or Eurogames, are more engaging experiences and based less on luck than the typical roll-and-move board game design prevalent in the 20th century. Attendees will learn about a variety of game mechanisms through discussions of exemplar games and see how these games relate. Many of these mechanisms are appropriate for digital games as well as tabletop games, so attendees will improve their toolkit of mechanisms for their own design work. Dr. Scott Nicholson is a visiting scholar with MIT Comparative Media Studies for the 2011-2012 academic year, working with the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab and The Education Arcade. He is an associate professor at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, where he has focused on games in libraries and game design as a pedagogical tool. He was the host of Board Games with Scott from 2005-2010 and is the designer of Tulipmania 1637, a board game published in 2009. In addition, he is the author of Everyone Plays at the Library: Creating Great Gaming Experiences for All Ages, published in 2010 by Information Today.
Ryan and Geoff are very pleased to be joined this episode by special guest Scott Nicholson, of On Boardgames, and Boardgames with Scott. They discuss complexity - different types of complexity, when complexity is called for, and how it can be managed.
Scott Nicholson, an associate professor at Syracuse University, does a podcast called "On Board Games," and a YouTube video series, "Board Games with Scott." His new book, "Everyone Plays Games at the Library," contends that role playing games have their proper place: Your public library. Nathaniel Rossoff interviewed Scott for MorristownGreen.com at the Dexcon 13 gaming convention in Morristown, July 7, 2010. The room's a bit noisy, but it's worth hanging in there for this 15-minute discussion.
