There's a special edition of The Crafty Pint Podcast this week as we come to you from the Australian International Beer Awards. The country's biggest annual beer competition, which is now into its fourth decade, took place at the Melbourne Showgrounds on May 15, where hundreds gathered to see which beers and brewers would be heading home laden with trophies. As soon as the last trophy had been handed out, with Champion Australian Beer going to the unheralded Wedgetail Brewing from WA, Will and James grabbed a couple of the trophy winners for a quick chat as they celebrated, then headed next door to reflect on this year's results. There was much to discuss, with a colourful blend of the familiar and fresh-faced, repeat winners and newcomers, and a great night overall for local brewers, with Aussies claiming the vast majority of the beer and cider trophies on offer. We were joined by a special guest too: Guy Southern has been covering the WA beer scene for The Crafty Pint for many a moon now while also building a career across the state's drinks industry. He won Best Media for 2025, flying in from Perth to collect his trophy, which was handed to him by last year's winner, Will. After the break, we also take a peek behind the scenes at this year's judging. We joined Kirrily Waldhorn, a long-time host and judge at the awards who now oversees competitions for Melbourne Royal, and Emily Usher, a brewer at Mountain Goat, as the 2,000-plus entries were being put to the test. And, while in celebratory mood, we want to remind people to get nominations in for their Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month and the "Have You Done A Rallings?" campaign showcasing good beer citizens.Start of segments: From start – Guy Southern 14:20 – Mick Neil and Stef Constantoulas – Philter 17:37 – Grace Fowler – Reckless Brewing 21:17 – Kirrily Waldhorn – Melbourne Royal 30:23 – Emily Usher – Mountain GoatRelevant links: AIBA 2025 Results Philter Brewing Reckless Brewing Nominate a Brewery of the Month Nominate a good beer citizen KlippakanTo find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.
On April 2, renewed excavation began in Jerusalem's biblical royal quarter in preparation for reconstruction work to highlight the ancient city's famed past. The three-to- four-week excavation is the first return to the area, known as the Ophel, since the excavations led by the late Dr. Eilat Mazar in 2009–2010. This current excavation is led by Hebrew University's Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, staffed by the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology (AIBA) and funded by AIBA alongside Daniel Mintz and Meredith Berkman. On today's program, host Christopher Eames interviews aiba staff member Brent Nagtegaal who was on the 2009 excavation and is helping coordinate the excavation this year. https://armstronginstitute.org/1217-excavating-the-ophel-water-gate

Based in Seto City, the epicenter of Japanese ceramic making since 10th century, Ruiji Aiba (b. 1964 in Fukuoka) creates ceramic sculptures and “netsuke.” They are often figures of children, innocently unclothed and at play with frogs, goldfishes, octopuses. Inspired by traditional dolls, fairy tales, classic movies and manga, Aiba emphasizes the ominosity aspect of dolls. The artists describes they are “neither human nor objects. Dolls are transcendental existence.” Aiba's recent exhibitions were presented at SEIZAN Gallery (New York and Tokyo), Tsuboya Gallery (Kyoto), Gallery Kenbishi (Aichi), Ginza Mitsukoshi (Tokyo). The artist's first solo exhibition in the US “Dancing With An Octopus” is on view at SEIZAN Gallery New York through October 21st. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.28.530008v1?rss=1 Authors: Kodera, T., Takeuchi, R. F., Takahashi, S., Suzuki, K., Kassai, H., Aiba, A., Shiozawa, S., Okano, H., Osakada, F. Abstract: Studying the non-human primate (NHP) brain is required for the translation of rodent research to humans, but remains a challenge for molecular, cellular, and circuit-level analyses in the NHP brain due to the lack of NHP brain system. Here, we report an NHP cerebral model using marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) embryonic stem cell-derived cerebral assembloids (CAs) that recapitulate inhibitory neuron migration and cortical network activity. Cortical organoids (COs) and ganglionic eminence organoids (GEOs) were induced from cjESCs and fused to generate CAs. GEO cells expressing the inhibitory neuron marker LHX6 migrated toward the cortical side of CAs. COs developed their neural activity from a synchronized pattern to an unsynchronized pattern as COs matured. CAs showed mature neural activity with an unsynchronized pattern. The marmoset assembloid system will provide an platform for the NHP neurobiology and facilitate translation into humans in neuroscience research, regenerative medicine, and drug discovery. What secrets lie in the corners of our dreams? What shape would our pain and trauma take if someone were to peer inside our most vulnerable thoughts and nightmares? How do you feel about cops doing magical girl poses in order to read your mind and judge you for it?This week, Sara and Runa set off on the pulse-pounding adventure of AI: The Somnium Files - Nirvana Initiatives (2022) and reunite with some of their favorite, and less favorite, characters from the original AI game. The sequel opens 6 years after the events of the first game, following an 18-year-old Mizuki with Aiba embedded in her left eye as she investigates a mysterious corpse... the right half of a victim's body, laid out cleanly across a stadium green. Not only is this freshly dead corpse alarming, it triggers a memory in Mizuki of another incident - six years ago, when the left half of this same victim appeared before her in a studio while filming a quiz show. Both halves of the same victim were cut cleanly at the molecular level, and both halves, despite being found over six years apart, were given a time of death less than a few days before their discovery. To find the culprit behind these Half Body Serial Murders, and perhaps to find the missing Kaname Date in the process, Mizuki tracks down the ABIS investigator who took charge of the original HB case investigation 6 years ago - Ryuki. A fresh recruit to ABIS who voluntarily gave up his left eye to make space for his AI-ball companion, Tama, Ryuki then recounts the details of his investigation to Mizuki and tells her everything he found, learned, and went through six years ago...Although AI: Nirvana Initiative is a sequel to AI: The Somnium Files, the game is designed to give new players an easy entry into the series and you don't necessarily need to have played the first game in order to keep up with Nirvana Initiative. That being said, as we've covered the first game previously on our show, this episode will contain multiple spoilers for AI: The Somnium Files including some mentions of the true culprit of that game and several key plot points there. What did you dream about last night? Do you remember it clearly? Was it a dream of a fantastical, impossible place? A nightmare woven from old memories? The precise scene filled with highly accurate evidence that a police detective can use to catch a big break in a serial murder case, maybe? This week, Sara and Runa dive deep into AI: The Somnium Files and experience Forensic Dream Investigations first-hand. In the perhaps not-too-distant future, we follow Date Kaname and his AI eyeball partner, Aiba, as they arrives to a surreal and abandoned amusement park. The sky is dark overhead, rain falls steadily, and atop one of the merry-go-round horses Date finds the corpse of the first victim, Shoko Nadami. This opens the investigation into the mysterious New Cyclops killings, chasing down the culprit (or culprits?) responsible for a series of increasingly twisting, baffling murders. At the end of it all, what awaits Date and Aiba is...AI: The Somnium Files (2019) is a sci-fi crime drama, psychological thriller, and Kotaro Uchikoshi puzzle wrapped up in a slick, saturated, and highly stylized presentation. The game follows Date Kaname, an investigator for the MPD's Advanced Brain Investigation Squad (ABIS) alongside his partner, Aiba, who mostly hangs out in his left eye socket since she's an Artificial Intelligence housed in a prosthetic eye. Six years ago, Date lost his left eye and all memories of his prior life in an incident that probably won't be at all important to the ultimate unraveling of this game's deepest secrets, maybe. After the initial investigation at the abandoned amusement park, they find Mizuki - The 12 year old girl who Date has taken care of for the past four years, and also the daughter of the Shoko Nadami. Through their investigations, Aiba and Date piece together the timeline of Shoko's last moments, uncover the links between a net idol and this case, and then try to help Mizuki recover from the trauma of seeing her mother's death. The best way to do that, as it happens, is through the game's central mechanic: Psycing. Whenever Date and Aiba psync with another character, they can dive into the Somnium - the dreamscape of that person's mind made up of an assortment of their real memories manifested in strange, surreal patterns. While some of these Psyncs are relatively direct memories that Date and Aiba are investigating in search of concrete evidence, others are more abstract locations full of someone's trauma, half-remembered moments, and deep secrets. In this first of two episodes on AI: The Somnium Files, we cover every A route path (with the exception of the AB route, which is locked until we get further into the game). We see a fanboy and stalker come clean about his role in covering for his idol's suspicious activities, we watch Mizuki become an action hero and Date finally become a Dad to her, and we flail around as everything, and everyone, falls apart. What will Date and Aiba find at the end of all this? The truth about six years ago? The identity of the killer? Or, perhaps, will it be something that shakes the city and the MPD to its foundations...? As always, if you enjoy the show please give us a rating and review wherever you listen! You can also follow the podcast twitter at sayitinredpod on twitter, and you can also find more episodes and information on our patreon at patreon dot com slash sayitinred!Content Warnings for this episode:General: Repeated mentions of eye trauma, eye removal, and murder will occur all throughout our AI: The Somnium Files episodes as the crimes at the center of this game involve these elements. Dismemberment, mutilations, child abuse, and child neglect also come up frequently.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleagues Chris Baldwin of the WAAR Room and Malissa Smith of Girlboxing on the WAAR Room. A video of this discussion has also been posted on the WAAR Sports YouTube page. We spoke with them Sunday, December 12. This past week saw major developments in the attempt by the Olympic boxing federation -- formerly AIBA and now renamed as the International Boxing Association (IBA) -- to regain its place on the Olympic program. On December 9, IOC president Thomas Bach said in a press conference that AIBA, along with the International Weightlifting Federation, were the IOC's "problem children". AIBA would remain suspended from the IOC until at least 2023, and needs to correct ongoing problems in governance, financial transparency and sustainability, and the integrity of their refereeing and judging processes. Boxing also was not included on the list of sports set for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, although it was not ruled out that it could be added back if AIBA demonstrated that it had corrected these problems to the IOC's satisfaction. On December 10, another report was released about corruption in AIBA by the team led by Professor Richard McLaren. This report, issued at AIBA's behest, concluded that the corruption in the officiating at AIBA events did not end with the 2016 Rio Olympics, but has continued through this year. The report noted that "the people are the problem, even when the rules and regulations are of the highest quality. The sport will need to ensure that it cultivates individuals with integrity to run the organisation." It did also praise the efforts of current AIBA president Umar Kremlev and his associates to end this corruption, stating, "a genuine attempt at reform and progress has been made under Kremlev's leadership." McLaren then discussed this report on an international online press conference. On December 12, before we were able to discuss it, AIBA held its "Extraordinary Congress" and adopted all the extensive reforms which had been proposed by the Governance Reform Group, which was led by Professor Ulrich Haas. These reforms included the establishment of an independent Boxing Integrity Unit. AIBA also officially changed its name to IBA at this congress. And on December 13, IBA president Umar Kremlev also held an international online press conference. We will discuss these developments on our upcoming shows. Besides the crisis in Olympic boxing, we discussed the debut show of the new Probellum promotion, which took place December 11 in Dubai in the UAE. This show was plagued by numerous major governance problems, and we discussed the significance of these and the lack of proper regulation. Also on December 11, there were several major boxing cards around the world. We mainly focused on the Matchroom/DAZN card in Liverpool in the U.K., and in particular on the successful defense of her lightweight belts by Katie Taylor against Firuza Sharipova. Taylor clearly won a decision, but this fight was closer than many had anticipated. We discussed what this means, what is next for Taylor, and the latest news in women's boxing. All this is part of our in-depth coverage of the corrupt world of boxing and sports governance in general. (Photo of Prof. McLaren from screenshot of press conference. Probellum logo. Glendora's Joet Gonzalez is an undefeated prospect that's ranked No. 11 by the WBC, won a gold medal at the 2012 U.S. National Championships and had one fight in the AIBA's World Series of Boxing prior to turning pro. An action fighter who loves to throw punches and give the fans their money's worth, Gonzalez has taken down top contenders, steadily raising his level of competition to the point where he's beating fellow prospects like Derrick Murray and Marcos Rios. He fights Emmanuel Navarrete this weekend in San Diego!
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleagues Chris Baldwin of Angry Afro Radio and Malissa Smith of Girlboxing on the WAAR Room. A video of this discussion has also been posted on the Angry Afro Radio YouTube page. Our discussion took place Sunday, October 3. We finally have proof of what many already knew or suspected: Much of Olympic boxing has been fixed. On September 30, an independent report, mainly focusing on boxing at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was released by an investigative team led by Professor Richard McLaren. His team also had helped document the Russian state-sponsored doping program in the Olympics. This report documented how officials in AIBA, the Olympic boxing federation, fixed the selection of referees and judges at the fights in the 2016 Olympics, how they manipulated results, the culture of corruption and bribery in Olympic boxing, and how these corrupt practices were carried out and enabled by the top leadership in AIBA at the time. As the report stated, in AIBA,"The people are the problem." It should also be added that what corrupt governments have done in the Olympic movement has been a key reason why Olympic boxing has been so corrupt. The full report can be read here. While this investigation was undertaken at the behest of the current, new leadership of AIBA, many questions remain as to whether or not corruption has been sufficiently rooted out in this organization. The International Olympic Committee suspended AIBA as boxing's Olympic governing body in June 2019, and thus far has not indicated if or when it will be reinstated. The IOC organized the boxing competition at the recently completed Tokyo Olympics without AIBA. We discussed what we know about how the Olympic boxing bouts were manipulated, some of the fights that may have been fixed, the obvious and not-so-obvious motives for this rampant corruption, the implications of this crisis in amateur and Olympic boxing for professional boxing, how this type of corruption in the overall Olympic movement is far from unique, and much more. Malissa Smith also brought us the latest news from women's boxing, including multi-divisional champ Amanda Serrano signing with Jake Paul's newly-formed promotional company. We discussed what this might mean for a potential showdown between Serrano and undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor, what is next for unbeaten middleweight and super welterweight champion Claressa Shields who has been fighting in MMA as of late, and much more. Plus, we discussed the postponement of the 2022 Gay Games in Hong Kong to 2023, the latest Triller Trash news and why they are the frontrunner for the 2021 Roger Mayweather "You Don't Know Shit About Boxing" Award, and more. All this is part of our in-depth coverage of the corrupt world of boxing and sports governance in general. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Martin Stark, the founder and CEO of the World Gay Boxing Championships. The plan is for the inaugural World Gay Boxing Championships to take place in Sydney, Australia, in February 2023, coinciding with Mardi Gras and World Pride in that city. The World Gay Boxing Championships are open to all LGBTQ people but are also straight-friendly, and thus open to anyone. We spoke with him by Skype Monday (Sunday in the U.S.). The origins of the World Gay Boxing Championships are directly related to Martin Stark's own story. "It literally started last year when I was in the hospital. I have the rare autoimmune condition Addison's disease, which basically means my adrenal glands do not produce cortisol, which is the same condition that President JFK had," he said. "Now, last year I had hospitalization because of my disease. And to motivate myself, I contacted the Gay Games in Hong Kong to inquire about the boxing program. And they came back saying unfortunately boxing didn't make the list of sports for the next Gay Games" in 2022. "So I came up with the idea with, well, I've been boxing for a period of time now and I wanted to compete. But I wanted to compete in an LGBTQ sporting environment. So I decided to create the first world, the world's first-ever LGBTQ boxing tournament, and called it the World Gay Boxing Championships." Next he had to see if there was significant interest in this idea. "It was just an idea. I started sharing my idea on LinkedIn, and friends started supporting me," he said. "So that's how it all started." Since then, the World Gay Boxing Championships was set up as an Australian not-for-profit organization. In October of this year, Boxing Australia, the national federation for amateur boxing in Australia, announced that they are supporting the World Gay Boxing Championships and will assist with the organization of their events. The amateur boxing rules of AIBA, the Olympic boxing federation, will be used in these fights. But the goals of the World Gay Boxing Championships go much farther than just organizing another boxing competition. Part of what they are doing, said Martin Stark, "is to disrupt homophobia, biphobia, interphobia, and transphobia, so that people feel safe to compete in the beautiful sport of boxing, an amazing sport of boxing. "And I have said repeatedly that by the end of this decade," he added, "I set up the organization to no longer exist. There is less hatred in sports." Of course, he realizes that this goal remains to be achieved. "We're not there yet. And we've made some great progress this century, but there's more work to do." We also discussed plans to increase funding for the World Gay Boxing Championships, plans to develop more grassroots boxing clubs and participation, plans for smaller fight nights leading up to the event itself, and much more.
