YEAH BABY! We're headed to the swinging 60's where secret agent, Austin Powers (Mike Myers) and partner, Mrs Kensington (Mimi Rogers) are hot on the trail of Dr. Evil (also Mike Myers) in his plan to take over the world. When Dr Evil fails in his attempt, he freezes himself, inserts himself into a Big Boy and launches into space with his cat Mr. Bigglesworth. In order to fight Dr. Evil on his return, Austin has also frozen himself and 30 years later when the Big Boy lands, Austin also comes back. Disoriented, Austin has to learn to acclimate himself to the 90s and after meeting with Basil Exposition (Michael York) he's set up with MISS Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley). Dr. Evil has also reunited with his lackeys, Patty O'Brien (Paul Dillon), Mustafa (Will Ferrell), #2 (Robert Wagner) and Frau Farbissina (Mindy Sterling) who introduces him to his son, Scott (Seth Green). It's our happening and it's FREAKING us out! Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, this week on Doom Generation. Support this podcast at patreon.com/doomgeneration
“If you've got a better way to do it, I'd like to hear it” The panel of peril are dancing down the street stark naked, with only conveniently placed every-day items covering their ghoulies and that. They got the idea, and carefully choreographed it, from this week's film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (Jay Roach, 1997). This week, they are joined by Craig from Whit's The Script podcast! Arch enemies Austin Powers (Mike Myers) and Dr. Evil (Mike Myers) are inexorably linked, as so many arch enemies are. So when Dr. Evil has himself frozen in swinging 1967, Austin is obliged to follow suit, both thawing out 30 years hence in the responsible 90s. Both have adjustments to make, Austin with the help of Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley) and Basil Exposition (Michale York), and the good (evil) Doctor with Number Two (Robert Wagner) and Frau Farbissina (Mindy Sterling). Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vsANcS4Ml8 ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Conspiring to steal an arsenal of nuclear weapons and hold the world to ransom – for one million dollars – Austin and Vanessa are in a race against time to stop the world going kablooey! But will the horny, randy, sexy superspy be able to resist the charms of a beautiful, and deadly, army of Fembots? Not likely if I know Powers, hahahahahahaha… He might though. Just what did the panel think of this week's movie, pray tell? How can they improve upon Dr. Evil's high-stakes plan? 204 - We are in deep now folks. Our Spy Guys miniseries has taken us to the darkest of corners of espionage; ill-tempered Sea Bass, shoe throwing, and 1960s British dentistry... but it's pretty gosh darned funny! In anticipation of No Time To Die, rewind to 1997 as we look at a film that is both an homage and a parody of the 1960s spy genre – particularly the James Bond film franchise. Directed by Jay Roach from a story by Mike Myers, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery stars Mike Myers, Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley, alongside Seth Green, Robert Wagner, and Mindy Sterling. A world-class playboy and special agent, Austin Powers (Mike Myers) is defrosted after 30 years in a cryogenic freeze to match wits with his nemesis, Dr. Evil (also Mike Myers). Possessing antiquated spy skills and mod mannerisms from the `60s, Austin must confront a villain like no other while making peace with his own out-of-date, swinging sexuality.
Last month, if you remember, darlings, Dan issued a challenge to Chrysten: to watch the 90s shagadelic comedy Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery*, a film which she has never seen and yet, somehow, knows all of the references to because every eighth grade boy in the world was running around shrieking "Yeah, baby, yeah!" at some point in their adolescent lives. Cryogenically frozen in the swingin' 1960s, English super-spy, Austin Powers (Mike Myers) is defrosted in the now much less shagadelic 90s to fight his nemesis, Dr. Evil (also Mike Myers). With the help of absolute smoke show and extremely capable spy, Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley...yowza!), Austin must adjust to life as an anachronism, while also falling hard for Vanessa and stopping Dr. Evil's nefarious plot to hold the world hostage for...one BILLION dollars! Goofs, spoofs and James Bond references abound! But will Chrysten's sophisticated sense of humor be able to resist Austin Powers' charms? Join us and find out! And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE! *NOT Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, as both of our dum dum hosts originally said in the intro of this episode. Dum dums.
Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Austin Powers in Goldmember, the final film in the Austin Powers trilogy. Austin Powers (Mike Myers) travels back in time once again to deal with his playboy father Nigel Powers (Michael Caine) and new villain Goldmember (Mike Myers). Helping Austin out in the swinging 1970s is Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles). In many ways a retread of the hit jokes from the second Austin Powers film, Austin Powers in Goldmember tries to please everyone while expanding upon the Austin Powers lore. Its opening might be the most ingenious sequence in the whole series, but once we get to Goldmember things get a little turgid. Michael Caine is especially good here as Nigel Powers using Cockney rhyming slang to great effect. Mat watched the first few episodes of Disenchanted, the new Matt Groening cartoon on Netflix. It has cute gags going on in the background, but it isn't willing to embrace the darker aspect of its premise. Thrasher liked the direct-to-video animated feature Batman and Harley Quinn. Working as a sort of epilogue to the great Justice League Unlimited series, it has some fun moments between its titular characters. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Saturday Night Live veteran Mike Myers created the character of Austin Powers as a homage to the classic British comedies and spy films he'd watch as a child with his family. After being cryogenically unfrozen, 1970s spy Austin Powers (Mike Myers) has to reckon with the chaste 1990s as he battles his archnemesis Dr. Evil (Mike Myers). There's a lot to like here. Mike Myers develops two very different characters playing the hero and the villain. There is a bit of romance and character development with his partner Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley). Greater emphasis is placed on witty dialogue than scatalogical punchlines. Mat caught up with the direct-to-video sequel to Dracula 2000, Dracula 2: Ascenscion. Taking place moments after the original ended with a new batch of characters save for Dracula himself, it mostly takes place in an empty swimming pool with Dracula tied up with silver chains. Taking a medical approach to bringing back a torched vampire is somewhat interesting, but it often drags with poor special effects and a lack of compelling setpieces. Thrasher went to the movie theater to watch Teen Titans Go To the Movies. A funny spin-off of the lighter Teen Titans Go! animated series, this feature film has smart jokes poking fun at prior comics, TV, and film incarnations of the massive DC Comics lore.
