Trong số 20.000 người Việt Nam được đưa đến Pháp làm việc trong giai đoạn 1940-1944, khoảng 4.000 được đưa đến làm việc tại nhà máy thuốc súng ở Bergerac, sau đó bị đưa đi làm thuê trong các trang trại quanh vùng sau khi chính phủ Vichy hợp tác với Đức. Họ sống như bị giam lỏng trong trại, thiếu ăn, bệnh tật do điều kiện sống khổ cực, bị phân biệt đối xử. Họ bị kẹt ở "Mẫu quốc" vì cuộc kháng chiến chống Pháp nổ ra ở Việt Nam. Cuộc sống của họ được ghi lại trong khoảng 1.000 bức ảnh của Robert Bondier, ông chủ một tiệm ảnh ở Bergerac trong thập niên 1930-1970. Công trình thứ hai là gắn bia ghi công 62 người lính thợ Đông Dương qua đời ở Bergerac, được tổ chức ngày 10/10/2025. Sử gia Pierre Daum đã dành cho RFI Tiếng Việt một buổi phỏng vấn về chủ đề này. RFI : Khoảng 4.000 người Việt Nam đã được đưa đến Bergerac ở Périgord từ năm 1940 đến năm 1944. Vậy trong bối cảnh nào và tại sao họ lại đến Pháp, đặc biệt là ở Périgord và Bergerac? Sử gia Pierre Daum : Năm 1939, khi Pháp tham chiến tranh, chính quyền thực dân Pháp đã tuyển mộ, tự nguyện hoặc cưỡng bức, 20.000 nông dân Việt Nam từ tất cả các làng mạc ở nước Việt Nam thuộc địa. Những người này được đưa lên thuyền, đến Marseille, và ở đó họ được phân bổ khắp nước Pháp đến các nhà máy vũ khí, đặc biệt là các nhà máy thuốc súng. Ở Bergerac, từ một thế kỷ qua đã có một nhà máy thuốc súng rất lớn, và đó là lý do tại sao 4.000 người trong số họ được đưa đến nhà máy thuốc súng Bergerac. Pierre Daum : Khi họ đến, vì là nông dân nên công việc giao cho họ ở nhà máy thuốc súng cũng khá đơn giản, chỉ là nạp thuốc súng vào vỏ đạn. Công việc này tuy đơn giản nhưng lại rất nguy hiểm và gây tổn thương cho da rất nhiều vì thuốc súng rất khó chịu. Vào tháng 06/1940, quân đội Pháp thua quân đội Đức, nên tất cả các nhà máy sản xuất thuốc súng ở Pháp đều đóng cửa. Sau đó, những người này bị giữ lại nhiều năm trong một trại ở Bergerac, và Nhà nước Pháp cho họ đi làm thuê ở các trang trại hoặc doanh nghiệp nhỏ, kể cả những doanh nghiệp chặt gỗ và biến thành than củi, những nhà thu hoạch hạt dẻ, và trong các vườn nho vì Dordogne cũng là vùng sản xuất rượu vang. Và đúng là họ đã tìm được công việc phù hợp hơn với xuất thân nhà nông của họ, chủ yếu là trồng lúa. Ở Dordogne không có ruộng lúa nhưng nhiều đồng hương của họ trồng lúa nước ở vùng Camargue, còn ở Dordogne, công việc tập trung vào cây nho, hạt dẻ và gỗ nhiều hơn. RFI : Ông từng nhấn mạnh là lính thợ Đông Dương bị đối xử bất công, bị ngược đãi ở Bergerac. Tại sao lại có sự phân biệt đối xử đó và tại sao họ phải sống trong những điều kiện như vậy? Pierre Daum : Người lao động Đông Dương ở Bergerac, cũng giống như mọi nơi khác ở Pháp, đều trong tình trạng bị áp bức thuộc địa ngay trên đất Pháp. Đó là tình trạng áp bức thuộc địa, phân biệt chủng tộc thuộc địa tương tự như những gì họ đã trải qua ở Việt Nam. Ngoại trừ ở đây, họ được đưa đến Pháp, và ví dụ tại Bergerac, họ bị nhốt trong trại. Họ có thể ra ngoài vài giờ mỗi ngày và phải nằm dưới quyền điều hành của một đội quản lý Pháp, thường bao gồm các sĩ quan và hạ sĩ quan từ quân đội thuộc địa ở Đông Dương, những người tin rằng họ có thể làm bất cứ điều gì họ muốn, giống như lính Pháp tin rằng họ có thể làm bất cứ điều gì họ muốn ở Việt Nam. Vì vậy, ngay khi một người Việt Nam chỉ trích chỉ huy của họ hoặc phàn nàn về việc không được ăn uống đầy đủ, họ sẽ bị đánh bằng gậy. Thậm chí bên trong trại Bergerac còn có một hầm ngục, và ít nhất một nửa số người Việt Nam ở Bergerac đã bị nhốt trong hầm ngục này hàng tuần liền. Ngoài ra phải kể đến một điều rất quan trọng, đội quản lý Pháp, trong suốt những năm đó, đã không ngần ngại ăn cắp lương thực dành cho những người Việt Nam này. Vì vậy, những người Việt Nam này bị đói thực sự. Còn các dãy nhà thì không hề được sưởi ấm, nên rất, rất lạnh. Kết quả là vì đói, lạnh, bắt nạt, áp bức, số người chết bên trong trại Bergerac cao gấp bốn lần so với người dân Pháp ở thị trấn Bergerac. Tại sao lại là 62 người? Phải chăng họ bị lãng quên trong lịch sử của vùng và lịch sử nước Pháp? Pierre Daum : Như tôi đã nói, tỷ lệ tử vong trong trại Bergerac cao gấp bốn lần so với bên ngoài. Vì vậy, những người đàn ông bị bệnh, và tình trạng quá tải đã khiến bệnh tật lây lan trong cộng đồng lính thợ Đông Dương, đặc biệt là bệnh lao. Hầu hết những người bị bệnh được đưa đến các bệnh viện lớn ở Bordeaux và Marseille, và trên thực tế, nhiều người đã chết ở Bordeaux và Marseille. 62 người trong số họ đã chết ở Bergerac. Ban đầu, họ được chôn cất tại một nghĩa trang, tên là nghĩa trang Pont Saint-Jean. Mộ của họ rất đẹp, tôi đã tìm được nhiều tấm ảnh chụp những ngôi mộ đó ở nghĩa trang này. Năm 1972, chính quyền thành phố Bergerac cần phải lấy lại không gian trong nghĩa trang đó nên các nhân viên thành phố đã đào tất cả các ngôi mộ lên. Họ đặt hài cốt của 62 người đàn ông này gọn gàng trong những chiếc hộp gỗ nhỏ, có đánh số và lập danh sách với số hiệu và tên của 62 người. Sau đó, 62 chiếc hộp được chuyển đến một nghĩa trang khác ở Bergerac, nơi có một lăng mộ Đông Dương tưởng niệm những người đã chết trong Thế Chiến I. Và 62 chiếc hộp đó được đặt dưới lăng mộ này. Tiếc là mọi người đã quên chúng, không ai nghĩ đến việc viết tên 62 người đã khuất lên trên lăng mộ đó để chúng ta nhớ rằng có 62 người yên nghỉ bên dưới. Khi tôi bắt đầu nghiên cứu cách đây 3 năm, tôi phát hiện ra câu chuyện này. Tôi đến gặp chính quyền thành phố Bergerac, nói với họ : “Từ 70 năm qua, có 62 người Việt Nam được chôn cất ở thành phố, nhưng không ai biết, không có tấm bia nào, không có gì cả. Họ đã bị lãng quên”. Chính quyền thành phố Bergerac đã nói với tôi là nếu tôi cung cấp danh sách chính xác tên của 62 người, họ sẽ mời một nhà chuyên nghiệp khắc tên 62 người quá cố lên một tấm bia đá cẩm thạch và sẽ đặt bia ở một vị trí nổi bật. Cho nên, thứ Sáu ngày 10/10, chúng tôi sẽ khánh thành tấm bia cẩm thạch để tưởng nhớ 62 người lính thợ Đông Dương ở Bergerac. RFI : Khi chiến tranh kết thúc, những người lao động Đông Dương khác có được hồi hương về Việt Nam không? Chuyện gì đến với họ? Pierre Daum : Khi Thế Chiến kết thúc, vào năm 1945, tất cả những người bị kẹt lại ở Pháp, bị giam cầm ở Pháp và ở Bergerac trong 5 năm, chỉ có một mong muốn duy nhất : được trở về nhà. Và họ chờ chính phủ Pháp tổ chức các chuyến hồi hương. Nhưng chính vào thời điểm đó, nhân dân Việt Nam đã nổi dậy chống lại chủ nghĩa thực dân Pháp, dưới sự lãnh đạo của Hồ Chí Minh. Phản ứng của chính phủ Pháp, như chúng ta đã biết, là không chấp nhận nền độc lập của Việt Nam, như Hồ Chí Minh và nhân dân Việt Nam đã yêu cầu. Tất cả tàu thuyền từng được lên kế hoạch để đưa những người lao động Đông Dương hồi hương cuối cùng lại bị quân đội Pháp trưng dụng để đưa quân lính đến đàn áp khát vọng độc lập của nhân dân Việt Nam. Vì vậy, những người lao động Đông Dương sẽ phải chờ thêm bốn năm nữa, tức là đến năm 1948, để cuối cùng, chính phủ Pháp bắt đầu tổ chức tàu thuyền đưa họ về Việt Nam. Quá trình hồi hương mất một thời gian dài, bắt đầu vào cuối năm 1948 và kết thúc vào năm 1952. Và trong số 20.000 người ban đầu được điều động đến Pháp vào năm 1939-1940, khoảng 16.000 người trở về, 1.000 người trong số họ đã chết, như tôi đã đề cập và từ 2.000 đến 3.000 người quyết định ở lại Pháp. Lý do chính là vì họ đã gặp một phụ nữ Pháp và bạn gái của họ mang thai. Phần lớn lúc đó là họ chưa kết hôn. Ở Pháp trong thập niên 1940, khi bạn gái mang thai, đó thực sự là một bi kịch. Vì vậy, hầu hết những người đàn ông đó đã đưa ra lựa chọn đau đớn là không trở về Việt Nam để ở lại Pháp làm trọng trách làm cha. Có khoảng 2.000 đến 3.000 gia đình Pháp-Việt được hình thành ở Pháp. Tôi biết rất nhiều, rất nhiều trong số họ. Và trong hầu hết các gia đình, con đầu lòng được sinh ra trước khi kết hôn. Sau khi đứa bé chào đời, cha mẹ đã làm giấy tờ hợp lệ và họ kết hôn, có thêm rất nhiều con. Đó là thường là những gia đình khá đông con. Xin ông cho biết thêm đôi chút về dự án này! Pierre Daum : Michel Lecat là người Pháp đến từ Bergerac, ông đã nghỉ hưu. Ông nội của ông ấy là Robert Bondier, một nhiếp ảnh gia ở Bergerac. Ông Bondier có một cửa hàng ảnh trong 50 năm. Sau khi ông nội của ông qua đời, Michel Lecat đã phát hiện ra 150.000 bức ảnh hoặc phim âm bản trên gác xép của cửa hàng, ghi lại toàn bộ cuộc sống ở Bergerac từ năm 1930 đến năm 1970. Và trong số 150.000 bức ảnh đó, có 1.000 bức ảnh có người Việt Nam và đó là những người lính thợ Đông Dương, hầu hết bị ép đến đến Bergerac vào năm 1940. Họ chỉ có vài giờ tự do mỗi tuần, và nhiều người trong số họ đã đến gặp ông của Michel Lecat để chụp ảnh với ý định sau đó sẽ gửi bức ảnh này về Việt Nam để trấn an gia đình, bởi vì dĩ nhiên là gia đình họ rất lo lắng cho người con đang ở nơi rất xa, ở một châu Âu đang có chiến tranh và họ không có tin tức gì. Bức ảnh là một cách để nói với cha mẹ anh ấy rằng “Đừng lo lắng, nhìn này, con khỏe mạnh, con ăn mặc bảnh bao”… Thêm nữa, ông của Lecat cũng đã đến chụp ảnh trong trại người lao động Đông Dương. Đó là một bộ sưu tập ảnh cực kỳ thú vị và cực kỳ hiếm về chủ đề lính thợ Đông Dương. Ba năm trước, Michel Lecat đã liên lạc với tôi để đề nghị chúng tôi cùng làm việc và tôi đã đến Bergerac gặp ông ấy. Và với chất lượng đặc biệt của bộ sưu tập ảnh này, chúng tôi quyết định khởi động một dự án, được chia thành nhiều phần: có một triển lãm ảnh đang được tổ chức ở Dordogne và thậm chí có thể sẽ được triển lãm trên khắp nước Pháp ; xuất bản một cuốn sách mà tôi đang hoàn thiện, sẽ ra mắt vào tháng 01/2026; khánh thành một đài tưởng niệm rất lớn dành cho những lính thợ Đông Dương, dự kiến vào vào mùa xuân 2026; và gắn bia tưởng nhớ tại nghĩa trang Bergerac, nơi chôn cất 62 người lính thợ Đông Dương vô danh trong hơn nửa thế kỷ tại nghĩa trang này.   RFI Tiếng Việt xin chân thành cảm ơn sử gia Pierre Daum, chuyên gia về quá khứ thuộc địa và là nhà báo của nguyệt sang Le Monde Diplomatique. Thậm chí bên trong trại Bergerac còn có một hầm ngục, và ít nhất một nửa số người Việt Nam ở Bergerac đã bị nhốt trong hầm ngục này hàng tuần liền. Ngoài ra phải kể đến một điều rất quan trọng, đội quản lý Pháp, trong suốt những năm đó, đã không ngần ngại ăn cắp lương thực dành cho những người Việt Nam này. Vì vậy, những người Việt Nam này bị đói thực sự. Còn các dãy nhà thì không hề được sưởi ấm, nên rất, rất lạnh. Kết quả là vì đói, lạnh, bắt nạt, áp bức, số người chết bên trong trại Bergerac cao gấp bốn lần so với người dân Pháp ở thị trấn Bergerac. Tại sao lại là 62 người? Phải chăng họ bị lãng quên trong lịch sử của vùng và lịch sử nước Pháp? Pierre Daum : Như tôi đã nói, tỷ lệ tử vong trong trại Bergerac cao gấp bốn lần so với bên ngoài. Vì vậy, những người đàn ông bị bệnh, và tình trạng quá tải đã khiến bệnh tật lây lan trong cộng đồng lính thợ Đông Dương, đặc biệt là bệnh lao. Hầu hết những người bị bệnh được đưa đến các bệnh viện lớn ở Bordeaux và Marseille, và trên thực tế, nhiều người đã chết ở Bordeaux và Marseille. 62 người trong số họ đã chết ở Bergerac. Ban đầu, họ được chôn cất tại một nghĩa trang, tên là nghĩa trang Pont Saint-Jean. Mộ của họ rất đẹp, tôi đã tìm được nhiều tấm ảnh chụp những ngôi mộ đó ở nghĩa trang này. Tiếc là mọi người đã quên chúng, không ai nghĩ đến việc viết tên 62 người đã khuất lên trên lăng mộ đó để chúng ta nhớ rằng có 62 người yên nghỉ bên dưới. Khi tôi bắt đầu nghiên cứu cách đây 3 năm, tôi phát hiện ra câu chuyện này. Tôi đến gặp chính quyền thành phố Bergerac, nói với họ : “Từ 70 năm qua, có 62 người Việt Nam được chôn cất ở thành phố, nhưng không ai biết, không có tấm bia nào, không có gì cả. Họ đã bị lãng quên”. Chính quyền thành phố Bergerac đã nói với tôi là nếu tôi cung cấp danh sách chính xác tên của 62 người, họ sẽ mời một nhà chuyên nghiệp khắc tên 62 người quá cố lên một tấm bia đá cẩm thạch và sẽ đặt bia ở một vị trí nổi bật. Cho nên, thứ Sáu ngày 10/10, chúng tôi sẽ khánh thành tấm bia cẩm thạch để tưởng nhớ 62 người lính thợ Đông Dương ở Bergerac. RFI : Khi chiến tranh kết thúc, những người lao động Đông Dương khác có được hồi hương về Việt Nam không? Chuyện gì đến với họ? Pierre Daum : Khi Thế Chiến kết thúc, vào năm 1945, tất cả những người bị kẹt lại ở Pháp, bị giam cầm ở Pháp và ở Bergerac trong 5 năm, chỉ có một mong muốn duy nhất : được trở về nhà. Và họ chờ chính phủ Pháp tổ chức các chuyến hồi hương. Nhưng chính vào thời điểm đó, nhân dân Việt Nam đã nổi dậy chống lại chủ nghĩa thực dân Pháp, dưới sự lãnh đạo của Hồ Chí Minh. Phản ứng của chính phủ Pháp, như chúng ta đã biết, là không chấp nhận nền độc lập của Việt Nam, như Hồ Chí Minh và nhân dân Việt Nam đã yêu cầu. Tất cả tàu thuyền từng được lên kế hoạch để đưa những người lao động Đông Dương hồi hương cuối cùng lại bị quân đội Pháp trưng dụng để đưa quân lính đến đàn áp khát vọng độc lập của nhân dân Việt Nam. Vì vậy, những người lao động Đông Dương sẽ phải chờ thêm bốn năm nữa, tức là đến năm 1948, để cuối cùng, chính phủ Pháp bắt đầu tổ chức tàu thuyền đưa họ về Việt Nam. Quá trình hồi hương mất một thời gian dài, bắt đầu vào cuối năm 1948 và kết thúc vào năm 1952. Và trong số 20.000 người ban đầu được điều động đến Pháp vào năm 1939-1940, khoảng 16.000 người trở về, 1.000 người trong số họ đã chết, như tôi đã đề cập và từ 2.000 đến 3.000 người quyết định ở lại Pháp. Lý do chính là vì họ đã gặp một phụ nữ Pháp và bạn gái của họ mang thai. Phần lớn lúc đó là họ chưa kết hôn. Ở Pháp trong thập niên 1940, khi bạn gái mang thai, đó thực sự là một bi kịch. Vì vậy, hầu hết những người đàn ông đó đã đưa ra lựa chọn đau đớn là không trở về Việt Nam để ở lại Pháp làm trọng trách làm cha. Có khoảng 2.000 đến 3.000 gia đình Pháp-Việt được hình thành ở Pháp. Tôi biết rất nhiều, rất nhiều trong số họ. Và trong hầu hết các gia đình, con đầu lòng được sinh ra trước khi kết hôn. Sau khi đứa bé chào đời, cha mẹ đã làm giấy tờ hợp lệ và họ kết hôn, có thêm rất nhiều con. Đó là thường là những gia đình khá đông con. Đó là một bộ sưu tập ảnh cực kỳ thú vị và cực kỳ hiếm về chủ đề lính thợ Đông Dương. Ba năm trước, Michel Lecat đã liên lạc với tôi để đề nghị chúng tôi cùng làm việc và tôi đã đến Bergerac gặp ông ấy. Hugely popular—Cranford-adjacent readers would know her by name. ⸻ Mrs. Elizabeth Carter (1717–1806) A respected scholar, translator, and poet—a genuine intellectual heavyweight. Famously translated the Discourses of Epictetus from Greek in 1758—the first English translation by a woman, and one of the first of Epictetus at all.
