Lisa returns with her sequel to the first novel (Slanted and Disenchanted) with a character-driven story called Welcome to Hollywood. It's a novel of two 20-somethings in 2004 Hollywood, battling with high rents, unsatisfying jobs, and a deep attraction to one another - problem is, they haven't figured out how to communicate who they are, what they want, and who they are each individually becoming. They're still a band though, even if they stopped practicing, and music has a way of making connections. … Continue...Episode 216 – Somewhere in Lisa Czarina Michaud's Hollywood

Guest In a career that spanned a quarter-century, Ted Czech covered crime for newspapers in three states. Disenchanted with how journalism was taught and practiced, Czech launched a second career in public relations in 2021 and began work on Saving the Beast: A Recovering Reporter Reflects on America's Broken Media and How to Fix It. Why This Episode Matters This episode explores the state of American journalism with Ted Czech, a former newspaper reporter and author of Saving the Beast. Czech critiques the decline of objective reporting, attributing it to sensationalism, ideological bias, and personality-driven news. He advocates for a return to balanced, fact-based journalism. Key takeaways: Journalism must separate fact from opinion to maintain credibility. Media polarization feeds public echo chambers. Restoring trust will require structural and cultural change. When watching film and tv it's very important that you develop a strong political or otherwise extreme opinion on not only the content, but the very originators of the content. If you don't join a faction, one will be appointed to you. OR, you can consume content and decide to be open to entertainment value and then you can discuss artistic and plot detail with your friends, online or in person, in a fashion suitable for positive human interaction. Today's guest has a fascinating story and weight loss transformation and his reason for it was very interesting as you'll hear. While this is a wide ranging conversation, our central theme in this talk is how to find the right lifestyle for you after 45 and the big pillars that contribute to it. Dr. Derek Alessi, Ph.D became interested in the field of fitness training at an early age when he was an obese teenager.  Determined to change his health, body and ultimately his future, he began strength training and developed a system to modify his nutrition.  Derek dropped over 80-pounds in one year and later that same year, he entered his first and only body building contest. Disenchanted with the way body building tends to minimize health and well-being in order to encourage raw size, he left that arena and dedicated his career to helping individuals achieve better health and wellness through a program of planned exercise and practical nutrition. At the age of 19, Derek passed a national fitness certification exam and began his career in personal fitness training.  He furthered his quest for more information through education and received post-graduate degrees in health and physical education as well as a master's degree in nutrition. Dr. Derek is the author of The Bermuda Triangle Diet (October, 2009 Strategic Publishing), Lose Fat Forever (2003), and The Promise Health and Fitness System (2002 ).  Derek has earned a doctorate degree in health and physical education and a master's degree in nutrition.  He is also a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) trainer.  He owns and operates Dr. Derek Health & Fitness, a private practice, a personal training facility for adults in East Amherst New York.  He has appeared on over 2100-TV and 400-radio programs throughout the country and has been featured in national print media including Maxim, Burn Fitness for Women and Iron-Man Magazines. Dr. Derek is a health, fitness and lifestyle contributor for the USA Today and the host of weekly TV show on NBC Cleveland & NBC in Buffalo, New York called Live It Fit Now!   In addition, Dr. Derek conducts regular health and fitness seminars for the health care industry, Fortune 1000 companies, and small businesses where he combines his unique brand of humor, empathy and knowledge to communicate his positive, affirming message:  Make the Most of Your Life… Live It Fit!™   Time Stamps:   (2:40) Losing 80 Pounds To Be A Dentist (6:15) Nair and Finding Competing Wasn't For Him (11:10) Opinion on GLP-1's (13:20) Biggest Mindset Shift (21:40) First Steps For Weight Loss (22:38) The Right Diet (25:05) True Keto Salad Dressing (34:05) The Right Exercise (37:00) Training Heavy In Midlife and Beyond (42:10) Women vs Men  (53:16) Choosing Your Curious (54:10) Where To Find Strength Genesis and Dr. Derek -------------------- Strength Genesis - My affiliate link: https://strengthgenesis.com?sca_ref=8302855.oUM0WRDjy5yg https://alessifit.com/ https://www.instagram.com/alessifitness/ -------------------- Slim Stomach Solution Program: https://www.carolcovino.com/slim-stomach-solution/ -------------------- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carolcovinofitness/ -------------------- My YouTube Channel: http://youtube.com/@carolcovinofitness

Foster was a prosecutor in Maryland for 20 years and then opened up his own law firm where he represented criminal defendants for an additional 15 years. As a prosecutor, he tried approximately 100 jury trials, including homicides, sexual assaults, domestic violence and animal cruelty cases. His work promoting increased protection for animals led to the legislature enacting the first felony animal abuse law in Maryland history.  He also won the first conviction under the new law in 2000.Foster graduated from Bennington College in Vermont with a double major in Literature and Theatre Arts.  He then spent two years as a copywriter at the Madison Avenue advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather.Foster then traveled in Europe while based in Amsterdam, where he performed for two years at the English Speaking Theatre of Amsterdam. After returning to New York, he became a member of the acting unions Actors' Equity, the Screen Actors' Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.  In the 1980s, Foster performed in various TV soap operas, including “Ryan's Hope,” “Search For Tomorrow,” “The Guiding Light,” “Another World,” and “As The World Turns.”Disenchanted with the world of professional acting, Foster entered law school to become an entertainment lawyer, but took a different path once he studied criminal law.At Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Foster won the school-wide Moot Court tournament and also received the prize for best legal writing, the Best Brief Award, and the prize for best speaker, the Best Oralist Award.  He was then named to represent Emory in the National Moot Court tournament where he competed against other law schools from across the country.Upon graduation from law school, Foster first worked for the Department of Justice in Wilmington, Delaware and then took a position as an Assistant State's Attorney in Maryland.GAVEL TO GAVEL, Foster's first legal thriller, is based on Foster's experiences as a prosecutor.  A life-long fan of murder mysteries and legal thrillers, with Agatha Christie, John Grisham and James Patterson as influences, Foster began writing the novel in 2020, when COVID greatly curtailed activity in the local courthouse. In GAVEL TO GAVEL, a wealthy businessman is murdered by his wife. The only eyewitness is their nine-year-old disabled daughter. Her testimony is the key to the case. Top prosecutor Mac MacIntyre is calm, confident and relies on his courtroom cunning to maneuver through a maze of office politics, the bright glare of the media spotlight and his own thorny ethical dilemmas. The story follows Mac as he navigates from the crime scene investigation to the selection of the jury, to fierce cross-examination, to a surprising jury verdict.GAVEL TO GAVEL was published by Paper Raven Books in 2023 and has garnered many positive reviews.  His next book in THE SENECA COUNTY COURTHOUSE SERIES is titled DOUBLE BLIND, and features another murder trial with elements of police and judicial corruption.    https://www.axfoster.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Is science a path to cosmic connection? In this fourth episode of our series from the November 2024 symposium on Spiritual Yearning in a Disenchanted Age held at McGill University, I share results of an ongoing study on Meaning and Mystery in Science, which explores the spiritual experiences of non-religious scientists, and how the practice of science might evoke awe, wonder, and a sense of the transcendent. We open the episode with a poetry reading from Marie Trotter, and following my presentation is a discussion with Dr. Rob Gilbert, Dr. Rajeev Bhargava, and Dr. Galen Watts. Here's a summary of the episode:Marie Trotter opens the episode with original poetry, exploring themes of fragility, hope, and beauty, drawing inspiration from Klimt's paintings.Findings from the Meaning and Mystery in Science study reveal how scientists, including non-religious ones, experience awe, wonder, and spiritual yearning through their work, categorized as transcendent, immanent, or liminal enchantmentBhargava notes that spiritual yearning is often disrupted by ideological, social, and political forces, which we need to contend with more seriouslyWatts explores the idea of science as play, contrasting the childlike enchantment of discovery with the institutionalized pressures of professional scienceGilbert highlights the danger of self-satisfaction in science, arguing that humility and vulnerability are essential for true insight This episode is sponsored by:John Templeton Foundation (https://www.templeton.org/)Templeton Religion Trust (https://templetonreligiontrust.org/)Support the show

A. X. He also won the first conviction under the new law in 2000. Foster graduated from Bennington College in Vermont with a double major in Literature and Theatre Arts.  He then spent two years as a copywriter at the Madison Avenue advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather. Foster then traveled in Europe while based in Amsterdam, where he performed for two years at the English Speaking Theatre of Amsterdam.  After returning to New York, he became a member of the acting unions Actors' Equity, the Screen Actors' Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.  In the 1980s, Foster performed in various TV soap operas, including “Ryan's Hope,” “Search For Tomorrow,” “The Guiding Light,” “Another World,” and “As The World Turns.” Disenchanted with the world of professional acting, Foster entered law school to become an entertainment lawyer, but took a different path once he studied criminal law. At Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Foster won the school-wide Moot Court tournament and also received the prize for best legal writing, the Best Brief Award, and the prize for best speaker, the Best Oralist Award.  He was then named to represent Emory in the National Moot Court tournament where he competed against other law schools from across the country. Upon graduation from law school, Foster first worked for the Department of Justice in Wilmington, Delaware and then took a position as an Assistant State's Attorney in Maryland. GAVEL TO GAVEL, Foster's first legal thriller, is based on Foster's experiences as a prosecutor. The story follows Mac as he navigates from the crime scene investigation to the selection of the jury, to fierce cross-examination, to a surprising jury verdict. GAVEL TO GAVEL was published by Paper Raven Books in 2023 and has garnered many positive reviews.  His next book in THE SENECA COUNTY COURTHOUSE SERIES is titled DOUBLE BLIND, and features another murder trial with elements of police and judicial corruption.     Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-foster-43519a151 About A.X. In 1974, The Rolling Stones were once again searching for their identity. After hugely successful tours in 1972 and 1973 thanks to the overwhelming critical and commercial success of 1972's Exile on Main Street, the band were mired in problems of their own making. Mick Jagger was bothered by wife (and now mother of his child Jade) Bianca trying to tame him from his lothario lifestyle. Keith Richards was diving deeper into his heroin addiction. Mick Taylor was becoming disillusioned with his role in the band as he was contributing and writing songs but never given credit (or royalties). 1973's Goats Head Soup is a fan favorite but was derided by critics for not being as good as Exile. Apparently the Stones were going to a half live, half covers album that eventually gave way to more interesting original materlal (Ain't Too Proud To Beg still made the album and was the 2nd single). Disenchanted with married life, being hounded by press and law enforcement helped create It's Only Rock N Roll - an ode to their lives as huge stars in the public eye. The title track is a classic both for the name and the story of Mick wondering what is enough for the fans and press. They come strong with killer Keith riffs (If You Can't Rock Me, Dance Little Sister), dirty roadhouse rockers (Short And Curlies) and forays into reggae, country, gospel and soul with the usual R&B sensibilities that make the Stones the Stones. Of course, we were a bit put off that there is no Keith song on the album (the last time that would happen) but you know he had something to do with Fingerprint File, a song about running from the FBI and all manner of police. With Nicky Hopkins and Billy Preston lending their talents on the keys, Ronnie Wood and David Bowie making brief appearances and the boys experimenting a bit, this ends up being a fun Stones record to explore. It might not be chock full of radio hits but get to see the Stones going down paths they don't always go with surprising delight. Not the best or worst of the Mick Taylor era and one we're glad we researched and heard. Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! Jim Hendricks has dedicated his entire career to the realm of finance. He embarked on this path after earning a bachelor's degree in accounting from Northern Illinois University in 1994. Although he initially trained as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and worked in various financial roles including as a controller for a division of a large corporation, Jim realized early on that a traditional accounting career was not his ultimate calling. In pursuit of a more fulfilling career, Jim ventured into the financial advisory sector in 2002, joining a prominent "Wall Street" firm. Disenchanted by the high-pressure environment focused on generating commissions and the formal corporate culture, Jim decided to strike out on his own. In 2004, he founded what is today known as Hendricks Wealth and Estate Management. His decision to start his own firm marked the most pivotal move of his professional life, establishing a business intended to endure for decades. Outside of his professional life, Jim is a father to three children, with one currently in college and the other two in high school. While they are each forging their unique paths to success, Jim holds a hopeful outlook that they might one day join the family business. However, he respects their journeys, acknowledging that they may not follow his recommended trajectory. Jim's philosophy extends beyond his professional endeavors; he is committed to living an engaging life and insists on infusing fun into every day. Whether it's through creative pursuits, swimming, golf, playing drums, or inventing games, Jim finds joy in active and creative engagements. Since childhood, he has enjoyed transforming everyday activities into games, a strategy that has served him well in setting and achieving goals. This approach not only enriches his personal life but also informs his professional interactions, offering his clients a dynamic pathway toward financial stability. A self-described highly motivated individual, Jim has a compelling story about what drove his intense self-motivation—a narrative he shares enthusiastically when given the opportunity. Listen to this insightful RIA episode with Jim Hendricks about the transition from accounting to financial planning. Here is what to expect on this week's show: - How Hendricks Wealth and Estate Management differentiates itself through focusing on detailed, planning-oriented financial advice. - Why Hendricks Wealth and Estate Management focuses on calculating a precise spending number instead of using generic percentage-based estimates. - How retirement planning should have tailored strategies to meet everyone's needs. - Why the strategic allocation of assets among beneficiaries helps minimize tax liabilities and optimize estate value. - How Hendricks Wealth and Estate Management operates similarly to a multifamily office, providing comprehensive services under one roof. For the past few decades, it's been conventional wisdom in D.C. that “demographics are destiny.” That the increased share of immigrants, young people, and racial minorities across the country would build a bulletproof coalition for the Democratic Party, swelling their ranks and keeping them in power forever. Those who deviated from this expectation could expect to be called sellouts, race traitors, and Uncle Toms. Recall Joe Biden's infamous interview with radio host Charlamagne tha God, when he said: “If you have a problem figuring out if you're for me or for Trump, then you ain't black.” But in the past year, Donald Trump has been winning over more minority voters than any Republican in decades. Recent polls have consistently shown that Trump has reached a shocking 20 percent support among black voters. That's compared to the 8 percent he got in 2016. And Biden's polling with black voters has dropped dramatically. This is a monumental, and to many, unexpected turn. And it was noticeable at the RNC. When Michael Moynihan went to the 2016 Republican Convention in Cleveland, the audience was more monochromatic. While certainly not as racially diverse as the Democratic coalition, the convention in Milwaukee felt younger and less white. Monday night, Amber Rose opened the proceedings. Tuesday night, Madeline Brame, the mother of a murdered veteran, gave a thunderous speech explaining why she's supporting Trump. She said: “Our eyes have been opened, just like so many other poor minorities across America. Donald Trump shares our values, love of God and family and country. He's been a victim of the same corrupt system that I have been and my family has been.” What's behind this shift? Why do Biden and the Democratic Party seem to be losing their edge with black voters? And could this end up making a real difference for the 2024 election? Last night, Michael Moynihan went to an event at the RNC put on by the Black Conservative Federation to ask them why they think that MAGA conservatism is appealing to black voters. By 1809, Lord Byron found himself untethered and debt-ridden. Disenchanted with politics, frustrated by his literary career and haunted by his illicit homosexuality, he abandoned an oppressive England and set out upon his legendary Eastern adventure. First plunging into a Europe torn asunder by the exploits of his hero, Napoleon Bonaparte, Byron decried the imperialist militarism of the raging Napoleonic Wars. Nevertheless, he delighted in the danger and excitement of his travels, absorbing and subsuming the cultures he encountered, and exploring a predilection for transvestism. From Portugal and the Peninsula War, Byron travelled to Albania where he fascinated the infamous Ali Pasha, and then later charmed the Sultan of Constantinople. In Greece, he found a land of exotic romanticism where his growing sense of destiny took root in the Greek's fight for liberty. At last, in 1811 Byron returned to England and published his poem, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Almost overnight he became the most famous man in London. Byromania had engulfed the nation… Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss Lord Byron's remarkable travels abroad - his encounters with some of the most famous men of the age, his confrontations with danger and destiny, and his untethered eroticism… *The Rest Is History LIVE in 2024* Tom and Dominic are back onstage this summer, at Hampton Court Palace in London!
