A sermon preached by Rev. Ginger E. Gaines-Cirelli with Foundry UMC, May 31, 2026, First Sunday after Pentecost, Confirmation Sunday. "We Know Who We Are"series. Texts: Genesis 1:26-2:3; Ephesians 2:4–10 There are some words in scripture that change everything. Not because they're long or unusual. But because they turn the whole story in a different direction. Today's passage contains two of those words: “But God.” Before we can appreciate those words, we need to know what precedes them. In the first 3 verses of Ephesians 2, Paul reminds the church in Ephesus of their old ways of being. The direct translation from the Greek is convoluted and confusing, but Eugene Peterson's interpretation from The Message helps us get the point: “It wasn't so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the world, which doesn't know the first thing about living, tell you how to live…We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. It's a wonder God didn't lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us.” And then…. “But God…” The old story gets interrupted. It moves in a new direction. Which is good news because most of us know something about stories that seem stuck in a rut. Maybe you've carried shame for something you did years ago. Maybe you've convinced yourself that some part of your life is beyond repair. Maybe you've spent so long trying to prove your worth that you've forgotten who you are underneath all the striving. Maybe you've watched the news lately and wondered whether cruelty and greed and fear are simply winning. The story goes one way. But God… That little phrase shows up all over scripture. Human beings build a tower to heaven. But God. Sarah is too old. But God. The sea is in front of them. Pharaohs army is behind them. But God. The disciples lock themselves in a room because they are terrified. But God. The cross stands on a hill outside Jerusalem. But God. Mary Magdalene despaired at the tomb. But God. Again and again, scripture insists that God is never limited by the stories we tell ourselves about what is possible. What a gift. Because one of the stories many of us carry is the story that we have to earn our way. This is so ingrained in our culture and mindset. We learn that story early. We learn it from grades and report cards. From performance reviews. From comparisons. From all the subtle ways the world teaches us to keep score. We absorb these lessons so deeply that eventually we begin to assume that God works this way too. God helps those who help themselves. God rewards the faithful. God blesses the deserving. God keeps score. But this is precisely the story Paul is trying to undo. Our temptation to slide into the world's quid pro quo economy isn't new. And in these few verses, Paul takes pains to refute it—not with an abstract argument, but by showing us, phrase by phrase, who God is and how grace works. So let's move through the text together and listen deeply to the word. Notice where Paul begins. “But God, who is rich in mercy...” Rich in mercy. Before Paul says anything about us, he says something about God. After describing the sorry, lost state of humanity, Paul doesn't say, “But we finally figured it out.” He doesn't say, “But we repented.” He doesn't say, “But we became more faithful.” He doesn't say, “But we got serious about our spiritual lives.” He says, “But God.” The turning point of the story is not a change in us. It is a revelation of who God is. “But God, who is rich in mercy...” Paul could have said simply, “God is merciful.” He doesn't. He says God is plousios (πλούσιος)—in the Greek: rich, abundant, lavish—in mercy. Possessing more mercy than we can imagine. This is so important! Because most of us have been trained to think in terms of scarcity. There's never enough time or money or security or opportunity. There is not enough to go around. There are only so many slices of any pie. And if we're not careful, we start to imagine that God's resources are limited too. Limited patience. Limited forgiveness. Limited love. Limited welcome. Only so many second chances. As though mercy were something God has to budget carefully. As though grace might run out. As though God were standing over us with a ledger, keeping score, calculating whether we've finally earned another chance. But Paul says, “Nope. That's not who God is.” Mercy is not scarce in God. Mercy is abundant in God. God's mercy is not pie—and there's not limited supply! Mercy flows from God as naturally as light from the sun. And lest we miss the point, Paul piles on another phrase: “Out of the great love with which God loved us.” It's almost as though he can't find enough words—mercy, love, grace, kindness. The language keeps overflowing because Paul is trying to describe a reality that exceeds ordinary human calculation. The world understands transaction. But God operates through grace. And perhaps that is why grace is so difficult for us to receive. We know how to earn. We know what it takes to achieve. We know the way to keep score. Many of us have spent our entire lives trying to prove that we are worthy of love, worthy of belonging, worthy of respect, worthy of a place at the table. And some versions of Christianity have reinforced exactly that impulse. Behave yourself and God will bless you. Believe the right things and God will reward you. Get your life together and God will finally accept you. Or the flip side: Mess up and God will punish you. Doubt and God will reject you. Fail and God will turn away. But Paul will have none of it. “By grace you have been saved.” Grace! We are not saved by following the rules or checking the boxes or through achievement or merit. The story isn't about keeping score or about earned interest and love averages. “By grace you have been saved.” Grace. One of the most beautiful insights of the United Methodist movement is that grace starts earlier than we think it does. We tend to imagine that grace begins the moment we become aware of God. But John Wesley said no. Grace was already there. We think grace begins when we decide to follow Jesus. Wesley said no. Grace was already there. We think grace begins when we repent. Wesley said no. Grace was already there. Before faith, grace. Before understanding, grace. Before discipleship, grace. Before baptism, grace. Before confirmation, grace. Long before we know how to pray, grace is already making a way toward us. Long before we know God's name, God knows ours. United Methodists call this prevenient grace—the grace that goes before. The grace that is always preceding us, drawing us, inviting us, wooing us toward life. And I don't know about you, but I find that to be astonishingly good news. Because it means that the story of faith begins not with our searching for God, but with God's refusal to stop searching for us. But Paul isn't finished. He goes further, saying God “made us alive together with Christ.” Alive—not merely forgiven or a little nicer. Alive. This is resurrection language. It is creation language. It's the language of new possibility. This strikes me as especially powerful in a world where so many people are exhausted and carrying grief. Where so many people are overwhelmed by the state of the world and struggling simply to keep their hearts open. Paul speaks a pastoral word into our lives, assuring us that grace is not merely about doing more today to get into heaven someday. Grace is the power that makes us alive right now. Alive to God. Alive to beauty. Alive to joy. Alive to compassion. Alive to possibility and hope. And there is something else here that often gets lost in translation. Paul doesn't say that God made me alive. He says God made us alive. The language throughout this passage is communal. Every “you” in the text is plural. It's not about me; it's about we. Which means the story is not simply about God saving isolated individuals. It is about God creating a people. A community. A new humanity. People shaped not by fear, scarcity, or competition, but rather shaped by grace, abundance, and love. Today, a group of young people will stand before us to profess their faith. And what moves me every year is that confirmation is not fundamentally about private belief. It is about belonging. These young people are not simply saying, “I believe.” They are saying, “This is my people. This is the community in which I will learn what it means to follow Jesus.” And we are saying, “We need you. Your voice, your gifts, your questions, your presence will continue to shape who we become.” Because grace doesn't merely gather individuals. Grace creates a people. Paul addresses this in what he says next. “We are what God has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works...” The Greek word translated here as “what God has made” is poiēma (ποίημα). It's where we get the word poem. You could translate it: We are God's handiwork. God's artistry. God's creative work. And suddenly the echo of Genesis comes into view. The God who formed creation, breathed life into dust, and called it good is still creating, still forming, still calling beauty forth from chaos and light from darkness. We spend so much of our lives trying to make ourselves. Trying to prove ourselves. Trying to justify ourselves. Trying to become enough. Paul says we are not self-made. We are God-made. We are God's handiwork, God's poem. God's art. God's ongoing project. And we are already enough—even as we keep learning and growing. Now, at this point, some people get nervous. If grace is this abundant, if salvation is truly a gift, if God's love comes before we earn it and before we deserve it, then what keeps us from simply doing whatever we want? Paul is clear that we don't earn our salvation. And he is equally clear that God created us for good works. Good works are not the cause of salvation, they are the fruit of salvation, evidence that grace is alive and active within us. Or to put it another way: God doesn't love us because we do good things. We begin to do good things because we have encountered the love of God. Grace is not an excuse to do nothing. Grace is an invitation to participate in what God is doing in the world. Grace is bigger than we think. It is not merely a drop of help when we're struggling or a nudge of encouragement when we're discouraged. It is not a small boost for the spiritual journey. It is the power of God's mercy and love constantly interrupting the stories that diminish life and opening up new possibilities we could never create on our own. And because grace is bigger than we think, it keeps interrupting the stories that tell us life can only go one way. The world says there isn't enough. But God is rich in mercy. The world says you have to earn your place. But God saves by grace. The world says shame gets the last word. But God is great in love. The world says what is dead is dead. But God makes us alive. The world says you're on your own. But God makes us alive together. The world says this is all there is. But God is still creating. Still shaping. Still calling life from dust. Still making all things new. The story was going one way. But God. Thanks be to God. Amen. + + + Keep a daily grace log. At the end of each day, ask: Where did I experience a “But God” moment today? Where did grace go before me? Where did mercy, love, beauty, hope, community, or possibility interrupt the story I expected?

Peter Goeman examines Galatians 3:16 and Paul's claim that the promises were made to Abraham and to his singular “offspring,” who is Christ. By tracing the argument back to Genesis 22:17–18, comparing translation differences, and interacting with C. John Collins and Andrew E. This powerful exploration of faith challenges us to move beyond a superficial understanding and embrace what it truly means to walk by faith in a culture saturated with unbelief. Drawing from Hebrews 11 and the story of Joshua and Caleb in Numbers 13-14, we discover that faith isn't about denying reality or pretending problems don't exist. Instead, biblical faith acknowledges the giants in the land while choosing to trust in God's character and promises anyway. We learn that faith is anchored not merely in Scripture as words on a page, but in the very person of God himself—His faithfulness, His goodness, His unchanging nature. The message beautifully addresses the wounds many of us carry from misapplied faith teaching, reminding us that a walk of faith isn't a perfect walk. The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11—Noah, Abraham, Moses, David—all had significant flaws and failures, yet God commended them because despite their struggles, they continued to trust Him. Faith pleases God because it says, 'Even when I don't see, even when I don't understand, I choose to trust You.' This isn't about having more faith, but about placing our faith in the right person. Like Abraham who left everything without knowing his destination, we're called to step out based on what God has spoken to our hearts, understanding that faith is an outward demonstration of an inward relationship with our Creator.

He talks to us about how even though we are walking into a season of promise, we still will have to face some battles. God brings us out of slavery to bring us in to our promise land but we have to obey God every step of the way. God has created us for a purpose to do good things! We have to obey God at His command. We have to understand who we are in Christ now and that we are in right standing with God. We have to make sure we don't have a sense of entitlement with God and that He owes us something. We have to protect out heart with gratitude to achieve this! We have to allow God to give us revelation and speak to us. Revelation will cause us to run toward God and carry His fire when He reveals Himself to us! How are you serving God on your own? God doesn't want us to just reach the promise land as individuals, He wants us to reach it with everyone in His Church! In order for us to possess our promise our comfort level must be challenged for us to be fruitful. If we're going through a battle, could it be that's where God wants us to be to go into our promise land? We have to recognize who is in front of us in our life so we can experience freedom in Him. Just Go with God and obey!

Pastor Sergio continues his series talking about how Jesus brought us out of slavery to bring us into our promise! Heaven is not the destination, it's the reward. If we just got saved and go to Heaven, what about the years we are here on the earth? Jesus didn't save us from sin and slavery to leave us in the wilderness! Life isn't just about getting our needs met. When we're not not fulfilled in Him, we turn into a complainer. We can't keep complaining or we'll miss our promise! Complaining takes the vision off of our promise. Comfort cannot fulfil us. There are things that have to happen before we can contend for our next promise. We have to progress from the food of bondage to the food of Revelation. When we get to Revelation, God opens up the windows of Heaven and provides clarity! When we feast on His Word we have to act on His word so we can activate it. Most of what God has us do isn't for us, it's for others.

This powerful message challenges us to reconsider where we actually stand in our spiritual journey by asking a provocative question: Are we standing in the land to possess right now? Drawing from the Israelites' entry into the Promised Land, we're confronted with the reality that stepping into God's promises isn't about waiting for perfect faith or ideal circumstances—it's about recognizing we're already on the battlefield. The sermon identifies three critical signs that we've entered this promised territory: we want more than what the world offers, conflict has become unavoidable in our lives, and we're facing giants. What's particularly striking is the reframing of our spiritual position—we may think we're not ready, but the enemy wants us perpetually stuck in a 'not yet' mindset. The truth is more radical: if we've separated ourselves from worldly satisfaction and hunger for something deeper, we've already crossed over. This isn't about comfort or balance; it's about maintaining a war footing. The message culminates in a beautiful revelation about our authority as believers—we carry the name of Jesus, and that alone makes us dangerous to the kingdom of darkness. We don't need to be experts in spiritual warfare; we simply need to recognize that our very presence, carrying God's Spirit, changes atmospheres and opens possibilities. The call isn't to wait until we feel qualified—it's to engage with what we already have.

IntroductionThere's a phrase that can land in very different ways depending on who's saying it and what they mean: we belong to the Lord. For some, that sounds like a threat. They hear a domineering God waiting to shame or diminish his people. Unfortunately, they are not hearing anything positive when we say, ‘We belong to the Lord!”For others, it sounds like drudgery. It sounds like this is a life of straining to keep up with an impossible family name. This is the mindset that there is a mean God who is just waiting to shame you and destroy you. But the catechism wants us to hear something radically different. We don't merely belong to Christ the way a servant belongs to a difficult master. We are called to take hold of Christ, to possess him by faith. We know that in doing so, we are possessed by him. He keeps us not out of contempt or to harm us. No, we belong to our savior, so we can enjoy our God. We are brought to a place of wholeness and restoration rather than tyranny because Christ paid the impossible debt. The question that presses on every believer, then, is deeply personal: how do I know that this Christ, the one who redeems and mediates on my behalf, is my Christ? Why Only Faith? We might wonder why faith is so significant. Paul reminds us about the significance of believing in Christ. Paul's logic in Romans 10 is simple and urgent: no one will call on Christ if they do not believe; no one will believe if they have not heard; and no one will hear without someone sent to proclaim. Hearing the gospel is not a passive experience. In the Hebrew sense Paul has in mind, to hear is to respond. The hearing echoes the Shema of Israel (Dt. 6:4). When the gospel goes out, it is the voice of the Good Shepherd calling his sheep. And the sheep hear him. His sheep turn to him. His sheep rest in him and conform to him. This is why the preaching of the Gospel is not incidental to Christian life but central to it. Faith is not conjured up by the sheer force of our sincerity. It comes through the word of Christ, proclaimed and received. We are not the originators of our own faith, but we are the grateful recipients of God's gift of faith. It is by faith that we receive Christ. It is in faith that we take hold of Christ and all his distinct blessings. We walk in faith, by the Spirit's power, and we begin to conform to our Lord. What is Faith? The catechism's definition of faith in Question and Answer 21 teaches us that when we have faith, we have assurance of salvation. True faith, it says, is not mere intellectual knowledge. It is a sure knowledge. It is a deep, experiential knowing, in the Hebrew sense, not just a cognitive filing away of correct doctrine. Faith is also a hearty trust that the promises of the gospel are our promises. If we believe the Gospel, then we say Amen to the Lord's promises. As we say AMEN, we will order our lives in light of Christ's promises. Think of Abraham in Genesis 15. When God promises him protection, legacy, and redemption, Abraham says, "Amen.” That amen is not just an agreement that the proposition is logically sound, but it is bowing the knee. It is a life reoriented to our Lord. It is saying, You are my God, and I will walk in the confidence that you are.And here the catechism offers something that should quiet our anxious hearts: assurance is of the essence of faith. This does not mean we will never doubt. It means that faith takes hold of Christ. To take hold of Christ by faith is to take hold of all his benefits: forgiveness, righteousness, and eternal life. The Holy Spirit is not working a tentative, hedged hope in us. The Spirit is working in us the conviction that the Savior proclaimed in the Gospel is my Savior. The Spirit is giving us the strength and the power to persevere. As we have faith, we have the person of Christ. What is Faith's Content? One of the more startling phrases in Romans 10 is Paul's reference to those who have not obeyed the gospel. We don't naturally speak of obeying the gospel or good news. But this language recovers something essential. The gospel is not merely information to be catalogued. It is a claim that demands a response. It is the same kind of response Abraham gave when he left Ur, when he climbed Moriah, when Hebrews 11 says he expected God to raise the dead. This is not a back door into works-righteousness. Obedience here is not the ground of our standing before God or the power of our faith. It is the shape of a life that has genuinely said amen to the promises of Christ. The person who says, "I believe the gospel, but it doesn't need to change anything about how I live," should ask whether they have truly possessed Christ at all. When we believe we are saying Amen to God's promises. We are trusting ourselves to his protection, his resurrection power, and ultimately the passage into heaven. This is a life-changing truth that is worked in us by the Holy Spirit. True faith puts on the yoke of Christ. And Christ's yoke, he tells us, is easy. He is not a master who demeans. He is not a lord who requires the impossible. He is the one who bore the burden so we might carry it with him, and in him find rest. Abraham struggled, but the trajectory is keeping his eyes on his savior as he walked by Faith. ConclusionIf you find yourself asking, Is this Christ really my Christ? Think about what you are asking. That question itself is a grace. An unbeliever does not lie awake wondering whether Christ is their Christ. The very ache of that question points toward faith already at work in you. Dark season? Struggling? Cling to your Lord, believe the resurrection life is in you, and walk forward in the confidence of Christ. So the catechism's pastoral word is simply this: proceed. Realign. Come back to the promises. You are not merely one of God's employees, quietly tolerated. You are not a servant kept in an inferior place. You are a redeemed saint, purchased not to be shamed but to be made whole. See that you are the person you were created to be to dwell in the glorious fellowship of God. Do not turn away from Christ, but turn to him as you hear his voice through the Gospel call.

We've been saved because God has a purpose for our life. Jesus saved us on purpose for His purpose. We have to understand and learn about the unconditional and conditional promises God gives us in the Bible. We can't serve God with transactional thinking! Treating a conditional purpose as an unconditional purpose brings disappointment. We must contend and fight for the promises He has for us!

This powerful exploration of the Book of Numbers reveals three essential principles for possessing God's promises in our lives. We journey alongside the second generation of Israelites who, after forty years in the wilderness, finally stood ready to enter the Promised Land. Their story illuminates timeless truths: first, that the enemy is actually afraid of us when we walk in obedience to God. When resistance comes, it's often not a sign we've done something wrong, but evidence that the enemy fears what God will accomplish through us. Second, we face the seduction of worldly influence precisely at critical moments before breakthrough. The enemy offers false affection to replace God's presence in our lives, sending lies that look appealing but are designed to snatch the praise from our mouths and rob us of intimacy with God. Third, and perhaps most challenging, we must fight for our brothers and sisters. The principle is clear: someone fought for us through prayer, fasting, and encouragement, and we're called to do the same for others. This isn't optional—it's essential to walking into our own promises. The beauty of covenant community is found in the 59 'one anothers' scattered throughout the New Testament, reminding us that we were never meant to journey alone.

One of the most polarizing questions in the mind of any photographer is "Should—or shouldn't I—get an agent?"  The role of an agent in a photographer's career is often misunderstood, leading hungry creatives to think that securing representation is their number one key to success. In truth, the relationship between a photographer and agent is far more nuanced than simply booking more assignments. In today's podcast, we take a deep dive into this complex alliance in a discussion with two generations of top agents, whose combined careers span from the film-era to the latest in media buys.  Listen in for a behind-the-scenes look at the many details involved, from the four P's Jennifer (JP) Perlmutter looks for in a photographer's work to Michael Ash's skill in editing a portfolio to allow a photographer's individual vision and passion to shine. This powerful exploration of Numbers 13-14 confronts us with a sobering reality: the difference between seeing God's promises and actually possessing them. We discover two generations of Israelites standing at the same crossroads—one paralyzed by unbelief despite witnessing countless miracles, the other empowered by faith to step into their inheritance. The message challenges us to examine what promised land we're standing before in our own lives. Are we like the first generation, acknowledging God's goodness from a distance but unable to believe it's truly for us? Or are we ready to step forward in faith? What makes this teaching particularly compelling is its systematic breakdown of how unbelief takes root—not all at once, but through five interconnected pillars: loss of hope, grumbling and complaining, doubt about God's heart, deception, and ultimately rebellion. We learn that biblical hope isn't wishful thinking but a confident expectation of good based on God's character. The antidote isn't found in trying harder to believe, but in returning to God's presence where hopelessness dies and strength is renewed. This isn't just ancient history—it's a mirror reflecting our own struggles with trusting God's promises about healing, provision, purpose, and abundant life.

GVA reports inflated figures like 656 mass shootings in 2023 and 417 in 2019, versus FBI's 30 for 2019, sourced from media and social media. USA Today notes these numbers may differ from FBI/CDC data and could be challenged, amid criticisms of media misuse for anti-gun narratives. Illinois v. The bill applies to lawful citizens in New York and is criticized as an unnecessary delay on Second Amendment rights with no proven public safety benefits. More importantly, grassroots progressives have been organizing and mobilizing across the country, and – like eager ball players looking forward to a good season – they're pumped up!So, what could go wrong?Don't look now, but the National Democratic Party's “Washington Club” of high-dollar donors, clueless consultants, corporate lobbyists, and old-line politicos are still controlling much of the Party's money, strategy, and message. Possessing all the magnetism of their go-slow leader, Chuck Schumer, their game plan is the same as always: Run a Big Money, don't-rock-the-boat, Washington-based campaign, shove-aside grassroots activists, rely on negative attack ads, and tell everyone (again) that Trump will defeat himself. As Casey Stengel wailed when he managed the comically inept 1962 New York Mets baseball team – “Can't anyone here play this game?”Luckily, though, those insider losers are no longer our real Democratic team. While they've been piddling around in Congress playing wiffle ball with the Trumpers, Bernie-style progressives have been rebuilding the Party of the People in every state with hard-hitting, slick-fielding, big-league DEMOCRATS.And voters are responding with an enthusiastic YES! From Coast to coast – already lifting Zohran Mamdani to victory in New York, Katie Wilson in Seattle, and state legislative races in Iowa, Georgia, and Mississippi.Let's keep pushing to make 2026 the year we quit moaning about the lackluster Democratic Party… and turn it into the bright new majority party.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. We live in a world overflowing with stuff—and messages about stuff. Everywhere we turn, someone promises that the next purchase, upgrade, or financial milestone will finally bring joy or peace. But Scripture offers a far better—and far more freeing—vision for how believers relate to money and possessions. The Bible doesn't ignore material things. It puts them in their proper place. When Good Things Promise Too MuchWe've all heard the phrase money can't buy happiness, yet it's still easy to live as though it might. When life feels overwhelming, we often reach for the nearest distraction—a purchase, an upgrade, or a new financial goal—hoping it will calm our anxiety or restore a sense of control. But Scripture never teaches that possessions themselves are bad. In fact, Paul writes, “God richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” (1 Timothy 6:17). Ecclesiastes adds that when God gives someone wealth, possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, “this is a gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 5:19).Enjoying God's good gifts is not unspiritual. Beauty, comfort, and experiences can all be received with gratitude. The problem isn't having things—it's the place things occupy in our hearts. Materialism doesn't begin when we own possessions, but when possessions begin to own us.At its core, materialism is the belief that created things can provide what only the Creator can give: meaning, identity, security, and purpose. Jesus understood this deeply. That's why He spoke so often about money—not because He was worried about finances, but because He cared about our hearts. “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).Things were never designed to satisfy the human soul. When they become our deepest treasure, our hearts remain restless.Enjoyment Versus DependenceSo how do we enjoy God's gifts without becoming dependent on them? The difference is subtle but crucial.Enjoyment says, “Father, thank You for this gift.”Dependence says, “If I lose this, I'll lose myself.”Enjoyment frees us. Dependence enslaves us.That's why gratitude is so powerful. Gratitude reminds us that every good thing flows from the hand of a loving God. When we see possessions as gifts, we stop expecting them to carry weight they were never meant to bear.Generosity is another powerful antidote to materialism. When you give, you declare that your hope is not found in accumulation. You remember that God owns it all—and that your joy is rooted in Him, not in what you hold. And here's an important nuance: rejecting materialism does not mean rejecting material things. Scripture never calls believers to asceticism or joyless living. Instead, it warns us against the illusion that anything—even abundance—can become enough apart from God.Ecclesiastes holds both truths together: God gives possessions and the ability to enjoy them—that's grace. Yet whoever loves money never has enough. Feeding the craving for more never satisfies it.Three Questions That Keep Things in Their PlaceIf you want to guard your heart, here are three simple questions worth asking regularly:Do I enjoy this gift with gratitude, or do I feel anxious without it?Does this possession help me love God and others—or distract me from them?Am I more excited about having this thing, or about how God may want me to use it?When things stay in their proper place, they become blessings instead of burdens. They point us to the God who provides rather than pulling us away from Him.And here's the irony: the less we depend on things for happiness, the more freely we can actually enjoy them.Rooting Joy in the Giver, Not the GiftGod created a world rich with color, beauty, taste, and texture. He's given each of us resources and opportunities to steward and enjoy. But things are not ultimate. They are not our source of life. They are not our Savior. Only God is.When our joy is rooted in the Giver rather than the gift, we discover the contentment our hearts were made for.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm looking for wisdom on when—or if—I should give my kids a car. I have three children, ages 16, 18, and 20. Because we live about 30 miles from school, we've always provided vehicles so they can get to activities. Is there a point where it makes sense to give them the car outright to help them grow in responsibility? Or is it better to require shared responsibility instead of a full gift?Several years ago, I had about $17,000 in credit card debt and enrolled in a debt management program through Trinity Debt Management. I've since paid it down to around $6,000–$7,000. I've heard about the debt management program you recommend, and I was wondering if it makes sense to switch if the interest rate is lower. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to changing programs at this stage? My wife and I have been married nearly 42 years, and generosity has always been part of our walk—we've consistently tithed. We're now beginning to receive inheritances from our parents and are thinking through how to handle giving in this situation. Do we tithe on an inheritance? How should we think about generosity with gifts like money or even something like a car?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Christian Credit CounselorsWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions every workday at (800) 525-7000. 2/8. Pigeons: The Great Communicators and Wartime Heroes — Steven Moss — Moss discusses the humble pigeon as a paradoxical feral bird species possessing extraordinary homing capabilities that made it invaluable as a communications mechanism. Although the famous narrative of Nathan Rothschild using pigeons following the Battle of Waterloo is apocryphal, pigeons were genuinely crucial wartime messengers. Moss emphasizes that pigeons were essential during the D-Day invasion due to radio silence protocols, and the celebrated pigeon Cher Ami saved imperiled soldiers during World War I. Moss notes that British forces even systematically killed Peregrine Falcons to protect pigeon communications, inadvertently contributing to the species' subsequent endangerment and near-extinction. 1869
