Look, everyone knows if you don't get at least 1 trillion downloads on your Season 6 premiere episode, you'll never make it in podcasting. With that in mind, we've decided to change our format up here a little bit at DT!HQ. As of right now and probably definitely forever, we're a true crime podcast! We're excited to embark on this bold, new journey. But, we also understand the value of staying in our lane. That's why we're kicking off our true crime journey by deciding what the best(?) video game crime to make a podcast about could be! Our 3 debaters all cover a different major faction of true crime. Matt's White Collar Nation lived peacefully with Andrew's Murder Nation. But everything changed when Todd and the Cult Nation attacked! This episode was sponsored by MANSCAPED! Join over 7 million men (and probably plenty of not-men too) who trust MANSCAPED by using code "DEBATETHIS" at Manscaped.com. Score 20% off and free world wide shipping by using our code "DEBATETHIS" at checkout! This episode was not sponsored in any way by Wondery. (Unless of course they'd like to sponsor us.) Are you listening to this episode thinking to yourself, "Man, I hate hearing ads on my favorite podcast! I didn't think Debate This! would ever sell out!" Well neither did we and honestly, we try pretty hard to make our ads funny and worth the listen. But, if you'd prefer to listen to our show without ads, you can listen to every DT! episode ad-free right now at patreon.com/debatethiscast! “Don't fly too close to the sun.”Let's fly into 2023 with a big myth that doesn't have much to it. In fact, it really is just the one thing. But the story of Icarus flying too close to the sun has permeated storytelling for centuries. So, naturally, Darien and DJ take the opportunity to discuss how much they dislike Eternals (again).Other topics include a vague understanding of video game lore based on the lore of a different video game, musical lyrics, graphic novels that hit just a little too close to home, and the casual reminder that DJ was totally a brony. The manager of Magnolia Estates of Winder Assisted Living Center, who was recently elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, is accused of stealing medications from the assisted living home. The Barrow County Sheriff's Office said Danny Rampey, 67, of Statham, was arrested on Thursday and charged with unauthorized distribution or possession of a controlled substance, burglary and exploitation and intimidation of disabled adults, elderly persons and residents The Sheriff's Office said investigators received reports over the past two weeks of Magnolia Estates of Winder residents missing medication and "initiated an investigation into the allegations" and used surveillance operations to assist in the collection of evidence. According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies arrested Rampey on Dec. 15 as he was leaving an unoccupied residence of the assisting living home. More charges could be filed as the investigation continues, the Sheriff's Office said. The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information regarding this case to contact the Barrow County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Unit at 770-307-3080 ext. 3083. Rampey ran unopposed for the District 119 seat in the general election after winning the Republican primary and is taking over the District 119 seat. Gwinnett police said a man was found dead near the entrance of his home in a Norcross area neighborhood Thursday night. Officers were called to the home on Stanfield Court in unincorporated Norcross around 7 p.m. on a report that a person had been shot. They discovered the 23-year-old man dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Anyone who has information about the shooting is asked to call detectives at 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers, which lets tipsters remain anonymous, at 404-577-8477. They can also visit www.stopcrimeATL.com. Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment.   Gwinnett County Public Schools employees will get extra money just in time for Christmas. The county's school board approved one-time $1,000 payments. GCPS Superintendent Calvin Watts said all benefits-eligible employees of the district who were employed as of Dec. 1 will receive a payment. The payments will be included as a lump sum on employees paychecks that will be issued on Dec. 21. Funding for the payments comes from the Elementary Secondary School Emergency Relief, or ESSER, federal funding package, according to Watts.   Duluth's Purple Team won the Georgia High School Association eSports state championship in League of Legends on Wednesday. It is the third eSports state title for a Gwinnett County Public Schools program after Brookwood won Super Smash Bros and North Gwinnett won League of Legends in the spring 2022 season. The Wildcats, runner-up in the spring season, defeated Northview 2-0 in the finals with the team of Corey Chen, Paul Shim, Phillip Chao, Brian Do and Kristian Napire. Other members of the Duluth eSports team are Yeong Lee, Tara Tu, Charles Deng, Cotrell Cooper, Wilson Nguyen, Ian Beltran, Michael Soto and Joseph de Lima.   The modern history of the Atlanta music scene cannot be written without devoting a full chapter to Michelle Malone. With her smoking six-string, Malone has been blazing melodic trails for parts of five decades with her blend of rock, blues and Americana, and her collaborators include the likes of Drivin' n' Cryin', Caroline Aiken, Indigo Girls and Shawn Mullins, among many others. But every year when December rolls around, Malone assumes a slightly different persona as she morphs into the guitar-wielding chanteuse leading Michelle Malone and the Hot Toddies, performing your favorite Christmas songs with a twangy, jazzy vibe. The Hot Toddies — with their latest album release “Toddie Time” — will visit the Aurora Theatre at the Lawrenceville Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Malone said that she started hosting holiday-centric shows in 2017, due to Christmas residing so near and dear to her heart. The holiday shows are not only a treat to pull off, but they also allow Mallone a brief respite from her usual performance style. She's also adamant that the songs performed will evoke memories a of certain time period in American history, complete with tunes made famous by Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, Rosemary Clooney and Brenda Lee. Gwinnett County resident Kaitlyn Sanchez was 10 years old when she first attended a Cops and Kids Christmas event. Now, 14 years later, she's back with her 10-month old son, Gianni. Cops and Kids Christmas is an annual event hosted by the Gwinnett Fraternal Order of Police and is meant to spread good will and holiday spirit to families in need. Thursday night's shopping spree marked the 33rd year of the event and took place at the Lawrenceville Walmart Supercenter. Upon sign-in, each family is paired with local law enforcement officers who accompany them as they browse and select gift options. Some, like Capt. Audrey Henderson with the Lawrenceville Police Department, have participated for 10 years or more. Henderson, who shopped with a young girl named Gabby and her family, stated her favorite part of the event was watching the children's faces light up. Event organizer Connie Chesser stated that this year they identified and approved 132 children, approximately 64 families, to participate in the event. In order to qualify, families must be residents of Gwinnett County and the children must receive Medicaid benefits. Families with children ages 3 through 15 had $150 to spend and newborns through age 2 had $75. Snacks and holiday treats as well as boxed dinners were also provided.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The actual practice of a fully funded esports program will include a curriculum for different classes, not just CTE courses. This episode will cover getting started for those with many limitations. Funding will be an essential aspect as your esports program grows. This is how we started the program in a limited environment. First, without administrative support, there is no esports program district-wide. However, any program that benefits students will ultimately benefit the school district. Thanks to one school principal who submitted a proposal for an esports budget, we have accomplished one year of competitions. District funding will be necessary for the following. Teachers are already passionate about gaming; there has to be a stipend for them. Currently, we have a yearly stipend of $1,000 at our district for Esports Coaches who do not get paid through other after-school programs. Next is the staff that will manage the program. In our case, I am the district's Esports Coordinator. We are lucky enough to receive a stipend for a Shoutcaster or commentator for live streaming. Security will be necessary, as well as custodial staff. This is very important. Although this is a low-impact program, consider a nurse. Finally, equipment that will be used is needed for the tournaments to be successful. At the school level, consider having fundraising available for the esports club. They will need to eat at the tournaments, after all. More than that, they need equipment, club shirts, etc. In the U.S., two websites to promote at your school districts are mrg.fyi/PledgeCents and mrg.fyi/DonorsChoose. This will help individual teachers or esports coaches to have more funding sources. Next is the hardware and software. The school district should purchase enough equipment to hold a tournament in the school district. To support diversity and inclusion, a great starting game that will support elementary to high school is the main Esports game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Therefore, the hardware proposed in this case will be the Nintendo Switch. Approximately 5 Nintendos with five games and ten pro controllers should allow for a good tournament. Game setup and rules need to be considered and set up. In many cases, network security prevents video game access for online play. This setup allows for in-person matches, which do not require online gaming. Another is the bracket management system. There are many, but the two I will recommend because they are free are Start.GG and Challonge. Challonge is spelled like challenge, but with an o instead of the first e. Finally, purchasing access to streaming services on twitch and youtube will not be necessary, but a service like streamyard can help. One final thought. Most tests are computer-based. Typing skills are necessary. The game I will recommend for Esports Tournaments is NitroType. It is a racing game that requires typing. It is web-based, but most school district networks allow this online gaming. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Esports: Recruitment (s2e3)

One common misconception is that video games are for boys. My daughters participated in a previous district tournament at 6 and 8 in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Squad Strike 3v3. My eight-year-old daughter took third place in the Elementary Tier. My students took first place in the Secondary Tier, led by a female team captain who is also the club president. In that competition, we had students who were labeled 504 and SpEd. One of those students was playing with his feet. I will not explain why but look up a popular gamer known as brolly legs. Esports is the same as any other school sport, with the added benefit of being more inclusive, not just for those who play but also for those who do not. Targeting the whole population rather than some is a crucial benefit for schools for student retention. Since it is a no-pass-no-play rule, the students retained are some of the best. Recruitment needs to be done with purpose. Allow teachers to have game day and see which students, especially the quiet ones, do well in the game associated with the district. In order to have a variety of students, some may need to be recruited more than others. For example, if the population is 50-50 male females, and your esports team is more males than females, there must be a recruitment change. The goal of Esports recruitment in Education should be diversity and inclusivity. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

More youth are participating in Esports - and it's nothing like the trope stereotype of “gamer kids” isolated  in their basements, chomping on chips and sipping sodas while gaming online with other kids in similar grunge contexts. In this episode, Esports expert Mike Dahle will help to accurately inform us about school Esports, including how it's in-person and team-centric, ways Esports hones skills for learning - from analytical problem solving to time management, and how Esports helps students consider STEM career paths. In fact, universities are providing scholarships for Esports athletes! ABOUT MIKE DAHLE. Mike Dahle is a Business Teacher at Elkhorn Area HS and President of the Wisconsin HS Esports Association, WIHSEA.org. He was a second-year teacher when he learned how far PC gaming had come since his younger gaming days when a student gave a presentation on the League of Legends World Championship. Ever since that presentation, his interest in esports has grown exponentially. He started one of the first state associations that has since grown to 125+ schools around the state, serves as a Board Member for the Milwaukee Esports Alliance, serves as a Board Member for the Interstate Scholastic Esports Alliance, and is constantly trying to push esports to the next level in the state of Wisconsin. WHAT DOES BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY LOOK LIKE FOR ESPORTS. There isn't a template for BOE policy for Esports. It's often treated similar to other school clubs. Surprisingly, some districts have bypassed Esports due to the cartoonish guns in some of the games. It's worth noting that high school trap shooting team numbers are at record highs in America. ARE ESPORTS INDIVIDUAL OR TEAM? Most games are team-based, and individual matches add into a team score. This happens in the game SUPER SMASH BROTHERS, for example. Think of it like batting order in baseball. Players are seeded so one school's #5 player would compete against the #5 player from a different school. Esports can be played by teams within a state, but also between states. It depends upon how the league is structured. WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR ESPORTS? The top five popular titles are: Super Smash Bros, Rocket League, Fortnite, Valorant, and League of Legends. ARE ESPORTS ACCESSIBLE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES? Yes! There is much flexibility in accommodating Esport players as long as the accommodation doesn't afford them an unfair competition edge. In Milwaukee, for example, a company designs adaptive controllers. A high-ranked quadriplegic player uses a mouth-held device to game. Esports also require minimal travel. Students typically only leave their district if they are participating in a state-level competition. 3D PRINTING AND ESPORTS. The 3D printing community collaborates through sites such as “Thingiverse” to create different or adapted controllers, and Microsoft offers several adaptive controllers. BENEFITS OF ESPORTS FOR STUDENTS. Gamers gain useful skills from participating in esports that help them on a broader learning journey. Analytical problem solving, time management, collaboration, and teamwork are key. Video games can also help to improve visual perception, enhance memory, and lead to better focus and attention. Some students who participate in Esports had previously not participated in other extracurricular activities. DO SCHOOLS GIVE CREDIT FOR ESPORTS. In most instances, students do not receive “credit” for participating in Esports. There is no curriculum approved by DPI to this point, although there is discussion to develop a curriculum. There is an inaugural INTRO to ESPORTS class at UW (Wis)-Parkside this year. Some Wisconsin schools, including: Random Lake, Racine, and Montello, award a patch for varsity. ARE ESPORTS PART OF TRADITIONAL STATE ATHLETIC ORGANIZATIONS? This varies by state. In Wisconsin, the WIAA and WIHSEA are separate entities and, at present, do not collaborate. Playfly (an Esports business) partners with high school state associations in Washington and Arizona to provide students with the infrastructure to compete and learn. HOW DO SCHOOLS FUND ESPORTS? Esports has a very small funding footprint. Coaches are either unpaid volunteers or receive stipends ranging from $400 to $5,000. Compensation for coaches and persons managing leagues is inconsistent across schools. Esports is generally under-funded when compared to compensation for coaches or people who oversee school clubs. Twitch channel and affiliate program generates $2.50 per subscriber. SPONSORS at the local level (Wisconsin) include: Spectrum Industries from Eau Claire, Bug Tussel Wireless, and Allstate insurance agents. Jolly Good Soda sponsors Random Lake. There are no state-level sponsors for Esports in Wisconsin. It is difficult for Esports groups to obtain a bank account or PayPal. Some schools host fundraiser invitationals. The “Extra Life” www.extra-life.org gaming marathon is a 24-hour charity event that raises money for children's hospitals, including Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. It was held on November 5, 2022. POST HIGH SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES AND CAREERS. There is a significant and growing collegiate scene for Esports with various organizers, including The National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). Students might receive scholarships. Post-secondary institutions have dedicated facilities and faculty, and the universities that recognize Esports as a varsity level program enable players to compete for a national championship. In less formal settings, Esports might be thought of similar to intramural sports, or be student-run club level teams, like Rec Well or Student Life. Collegiate teams can compete in other leagues. Universities feature Esports as a recruitment tool. ESports might have a similar influence for K-12 open enrollment. Beyond gaming, players maximize Esports to develop their own business acumen - complete with social media marketing, analytics, coaching, blogs, analyzing competition film, networking, and IT infrastructure. Being an Esports player or working in an Esports league as an analyst, IT, etc., has parallels to an internship in marketing and IT. WHAT SHOULD PARENTS AND SCHOOL LEADERS KNOW ABOUT ESPORTS? Esports is broadly popular, but specifically offers opportunities for a school's under-represented students. For some students, Esports is the only extracurricular activity they participated in during their school career. And there's evidence to suggest that playing Esports improved student's grades and attendance. Esports aligns with the CDC's themes for School Connectedness. At Arrowhead Union High School (Wisconsin), 60-70 students stay after school on Fridays to play Esports. Parents drop off TVs and students even play under tables. Esport players are voluntarily participating in-person with their peers. They are not sitting at home in their basement. Esports participants learn play-by-play announcing, media coaching, post-game interviewing, and public speaking skills. Esports has helped students obtain scholarships. One student received a 60% scholarship. He was an athlete on the autism spectrum. “If you leverage this program correctly, you can do a ton with it.” The National Association of Esports Coaches and Directors works to serve, legitimize, and advance Esports at all levels  https://www.naecad.org/about-naecad. Mankato University (MN) presented at the NAECAD conference. It's ranked as the top school for broadcasting. An Esport player's next step could be to form a broadcasting club, or to pursue a career in broadcasting - perhaps by attending Mankato University. MORE THINGS SCHOOLS SHOULD CONSIDER ABOUT ESPORTS. Some games include cartoon guns, a disqualifying feature per some school districts. Student data privacy is a concern. What is on the networks? Is there an in-game chat feature, and if so, how do we turn it off? The Esports launching software can present challenges. The games themselves are efficient, but the system to access the game can be buggy. Schools should create separate Esports logins on computers and also toggle settings so Esports can't be accessed until after 2PM. Esports is inclusive, and also an equity-oriented activity. You don't need expensive gear and to pay a sports fee to participate. You also don't have to rent expensive facilities. Esports increase opportunities for students both as players as well as other niche roles, such as announcing, communications, web design, and IT. There isn't a Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) prohibition clause in Esports. Although it is rare, a high school Esports player could enter into paid sponsorship deals - and by doing so, wouldn't have to forfeit their eligibility to play Esports. Esports can be included in the school district's DPI 5-year Pupil Nondiscrimination report as increasing extracurricular opportunities for students. It is particularly inclusive for students with disabilities or students without the financial means to participate in activities that have higher barriers to entry for personal equipment costs, facility rentals, and participation fees. Esports teams can consist of a mixed-gender roster. Consider formal club recognition for Esports to facilitate a funding account in your school district's fiscal chart of accounts. Audition Workshops The workshop is like the pre-audition audition. You are generally divided by age and taken through singing, dancing and running lines. Auditions It can get extremely competitive at auditions. Brother against brother, Friend against friend. And Raphael says it's important to look “fly” to the auditions. It's important to keep yourself busy like playing cards to keep yourself entertained during auditions. Call-Backs You have a short amount of time to prep for call-backs. If you bomb your call-back, you may have just missed out on making the show. It's easy to psyche yourself out when you're checking out your competition. The directors usually don't provide feedback during call-backs which adds to the anxiety. Practices You made the show - good for you! Middle schoolers need to balance school, other activities, family time and other interests in addition to the show. Son and Raphael practice at home in front of their stuffed animals for their audience. Tech Week Tech Week is crunch time where you prepare for the actual shows. The number of practices ramp up and you need to do run-throughs with microphones and costumes. You need to lean on your friends and trust your directors to make sure the show comes together. Opening Night The guys play Super Smash Bros on the Switch to take the focus off the show. The cast and crew are in full costume and huddle together and talk trash to relieve stress. Closing Night It's a mix of emotions. We're excited that it's over but we also got so close to our castmates that we get so emotional. We also want to go out on top and give our best performance. We celebrate our show with an awesome cast party. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On this episode, we featured our fellow podcaster, If You Give a Dad a Podcast. This is a nerdy dad podcast where they interview everyone from wrestlers, musicians and even a chiropractor. It's showtime for some hot takes! This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill deliver a show packed with nostalgia, collaboration, and controversial opinions. Before getting into the show's spiciest review this year, though, it's time for some listener fan mail. In honor of the impending Super Mario Bros. Movie, the gang reflect on their most cherished memories with the Super Mario Bros. series, ranging from the original release on the NES up to the Wii era with Super Mario Galaxy. With that wholesome positivity out of the way, it's time for the main event: Marc's review of Bayonetta 3. Hopes were high for this long-awaited installment in the fan-favorite action series, but Marc's review paints a whole different picture: he rails against the game for its uneven gameplay, nonsensical story, and disappointing performance on Switch, among many, many other criticisms. Bayonetta 3 reviews might be overwhelmingly positive, but when stacking up the game against its predecessors, Marc makes one thing clear: there's no comparison. Get ready for a Witch Time combo of negativity in what has to be one of the spiciest rants in NXpress history! astly, the gang steers the show towards positivity with Campbell's review of the delightful It Takes Two on Switch. The Game of the Year of 2021, It Takes Two is unlike any other multiplayer title on a platform that is already known for its masterful co-op library–and best of all, it's received an excellent Switch port. A couple of things about me: I love the Super Smash Bros. franchise, especially Melee. My wife, Jen, is my biggest supporter and I would not be here without her. To our two children, Ellie and Ezra, I'm proud to be your Daddy. The main problems with the old prototype: not rhythmic enough and too simple. The beats the player had to match were up to the sixteenth note (quarter beat) which left players not understanding which beat they were playing to, and an impression of the game feeling sluggish Some thoughts from the discussion -Use beat patterns rather than make people keep the beat -Being able to store (and playback) beats to conjure special moves -Give the instruments personality to the fighting moves they can make -Make the game into a metaphor, give it personality - these beats might control instruments, which control rock-em-sock-em robots, rather than making the avatars hit each other with a very expensive bass clarinet.
