Nurses like Sarah Blum spent their tours in Vietnam doing the unimaginable, accumulating and internalizing trauma that would surface over the decades that followed. In this episode, Sarah shares what it takes to do this work... and what it takes to heal.
Today's podcast features an incredibly talented and always delightful Catherine Hicks. You might remember her as the loving Annie Camden from “7th Heaven,” the brilliant Dr. Gillian Taylor who taught Captain Kirk a thing or two about whales in “Star Trek IV” and of course, the woman who had the unfortunate luck of buying a doll possessed by a serial killer in “Child's Play.” But then, we've all made questionable shopping choices, right? But, did you also know she starred alongside Bill Murray in “Stripes?” She held her own against one of comedy's greatest. She'll comment on that experience.
Today we're going on an aquatic journey with Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage. Herbie calls the title track the best tune he's ever written. We dive deep into the music to explore what makes this tune, and this album, great. The roots of Maiden Voyage date back in 1963, when Herbie began hearing rumors that Miles Davis wanted to hear him play. He didn't believe it at first -- Miles was at the height of his celebrity by this point. But soon he got a call. He went over to Miles's house and played with him, George Coleman, Tony Williams and Ron Carter for three days. On the third day, Miles asks the group to come to studio to record Seven Steps to Heaven. Herbie says, "Does that mean I'm in the band?" Miles says, "You're making the record, mother f**cker!" After two years playing in what many call the one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all time, Herbie would release Maiden Voyage in 1965. Along with George, Tony and Ron, plus saxophonist Freddie Hubbard. Although it is one of his simplest tunes -- with a rhythm inspired by a cologne commercial -- Maiden Voyage would become a favorite and a standard among jazz musicians. In this episode, you'll hear:- Adam and Peter pick apart the greatest moments from the album, including some perfect solos- The story of the commercial roots of this jazz standard- Where the record got its aquatic theme- Why a great song starts with a great bassline (just ask Ron Carter)- How this record could have been even better ... if it weren't for that piano sound- Where we land on Van Gelder Sound controversy-----Keyboards? Fox of “Family Ties,” Todd Bridges from “Different Strokes” and Nancy McKeon of “Facts of Life.” The movie was called “High School, USA,” which can be seen today on Tubi-TV.

“I'm in the Jailhouse Now” was the biggest hit for one of the most iconic honky-tonk singers of all time, Webb Pierce. This man wore more rhinestones than Liberace's coffee table and had a voice smoother than Tennessee whiskey. Webb didn't just play country music, he lived it. Music expert Joel Whitburn joins me in this interview. So, pour yourself a glass and get ready for a ride through the golden age of country with the man who brought the twang to town.
I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends, Slackers! On a quick vacation trip to Omaha, Nebraska, I had the pleasure of catching a FREE concert - none other than Ringo Starr and his All Star Band. Comprised of members of TOTO and MEN AT WORK, this was better than could be expected for a free concert in the park! Not only does Ringo look and sound amazing for 84 years old, the band is spectacular, with each artist getting to play songs from their vast catalogues. Admittedly, Colin Hay from MEN AT WORK was the guy I was most stoked about seeing - and he did not disappoint. Although, I was really hoping to hear Overkill! And Steve Lukather is a savage guitar player, but seeing it in person was a sight to behold. This is a quick episode, with some details of our AWFUL travel experiences, the challenges of aging and ailing parents, and how sobriety occasionally leads to some lowkey FOMO.If you get a chance to catch the MEN AT WORK, TOTO, Christopher Cross tour - take it!

Sometimes the most important thing isn't fixing someone's pain — it's simply being willing to sit with them while they endure it. As we draw near the end of National PTSD Awareness Month, we'll find out how a tragic death became a bridge between father and son, and how the work of healing trauma never really ends.
Do you remember “Tammy,” and “Aba Daba Honeymoon? How about “Tammy and the Bachelor” and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown?” I think all of us remember the movie “Singing in the Rain.” Today's podcast goes back to a woman who danced toe-to-toe with Gene Kelly, stole scenes with her wit and could probably out-sing out-joke and out-charm all of us combined. Debbie Reynolds has some gossip from the time and will give advice on how to stay fabulous 24/7. And I loved the sexy way she answered the phone.

Don Drysdale was one of the most intimidating pitchers to ever take a big league mound, and his career seemingly reached its peak 57 years ago this week when he broke the record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched just before having the record snapped at 58 2/3 innings. Plus, happy birthday to Van Lingle Mungo and Ken Singleton! And farewell to Tommy Helms and Marshall Edwards.

Welcome…I'm going to give you a trivia question that I'll bet you will not know the answer to. Who was the voice of John Lennon in the animated film “Yellow Submarine?” He is a man whose talent has graced the big screen. And he has written some thrilling novels. He had unforgettable roles in classics like “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Italian Job.” But he was also a bestselling author, a storyteller with a brilliant sense of humor, and an artist with a fascinating career. John Clive was a fantastic guest that will make you laugh, think, and be entertained.

It had been a while since we explored the classics and this certainly is nothing short of a perfect film. There are so many moments that will remain in my head forever and I've never seen acting like this in my life. This being my first Liz Taylor and Richard Burton film, I was beyond transfixed. With just a four person cast, there are so many ebbs and flows and the story structure and verbage throughout was was just insane in the best way,Off-Topic rants include: other casting possibilities, Kirsten Dunst, the Simpsons, and dramatic readings throughout---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Continuing with a little bit of an insight into my life (and I do mean a little insight) I took the time today to showcase some very interesting songs that popped up in the 60's & 70's. Think Allan Sherman (Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh), Ray Stevens (The Streak), Jimmy Dean (Big Bad John), Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon (Way Down Yonder in New Orleans) and even The Archies (Sugar, Sugar). Plus One Tin Soldier, Clap for the Wolfman and a few more. I toss in some background info for most of them and get slightly nostalgic.

In this episode, we'll introduce you to someone whose gratitude toward Vietnam veterans is a matter of regular, intentional practice. She has turned “thank you for your service” into a lifestyle. Because if it hadn't been for Vietnam veterans, she says, she might never have known freedom.
Today we're going back in time when the spotlight was on a man whose saxophone melodies and bandleading prowess made dance floors come alive, the incomparable Larry Elgart. Larry, along with his brother Les, didn't just play music, they crafted the theme that got America's feet moving, the “Bandstand Boogie,” the unforgettable tune of “American Bandstand.” When big band music began to fade, Larry improvised a new sound, characterized by tightly synchronized sax and brass sections and a lighter rhythm section. This fresh new approach called “Hooked on Swing” brought him back into the limelight. And on this day in 1982 “Hooked on Swing” was a top 20 album on the Billboard charts.
