After "Wayne's World" scored a near perfect 0.25 Wipe Score, the Shat Crew was drooling over the prospect of covering Mike Myers' follow-up flop with a knockout supporting cast: "So I Married An Axe Murderer." Ash loved it as a kid, and it inspired Gene to perform beat poetry. But Big D has always kept the movie at arm's length. In this episode, we examine the 1993 romantic black comedy and reminisce about '90s music, coffee shop culture, shabby chic home decor, handsy moms, Alan Arkin's genius, and whether Mike Myers makes Adam Sandler seem romantic. The Shat Crew also discusses trust in relationships, appropriate honeymoon destinations, whether Charlie even deserves Harriet, and whether Mike Myers can act when he isn't wearing a costume. At the beginning of The Simpsons, there was Jay Kogen. Hear about transitioning The Simpsons from The Tracey Ullman Show into a blockbuster weekly cartoon series. Jay Kogan is an executive producer, writer, actor, and director who has worked on such shows as The Tracey Ullman Show, Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, and Frazier. He won an Emmy for his work on Fraser. Jay and I discuss his early inspirations which included his writer and Emmy award-winning father, Arnie Kogen. We discuss working on The Tracey Ullman Show, The Simpsons, and his Emmy award while writing for Frasier. Jay shares a ton of great stories about his collaborations with Mike Myers (including a version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty that almost was). We also discuss Jay's family. His wife Brown Mandell (who wrote some of my favorite episodes of Friends) and his son Charlie Kogen, a singer/songwriter, whose album I'm obsessed with. Jay is also the reboot king. We have been subjecting ourselves to THE PENTAVERATE for reasons it is hard to explain so when Johnny Utah responded to our call for suggestions of movies that listeners think are worth revisiting, Mike Myers 1993 follow up to the pop culture smash hit WAYNE'S WORLD seemed like a good fit with our viewing trends. It was a surprise to me though that this week's movie, SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER, would reference the recent Netflix's series central conceit, proving the Canadian has had the idea in gestation for over 30 years. Charlie (Myers) is a commitment phobic beat poet who meets butcher and potential serial killer Harriet (Nancy Travis) when purchasing a haggis at "Meats of The World" in San Francisco. Featuring many of the Myers staples which have persisted into his recent output; portraying multiple characters on screen (how long until a Mike Myers film only stars Mike Myers?), schediaphilia, genre or self-aware characters, euphemisms and Scottishness, this is a pretty mediocre movie with a decent idea at its core; the commitment phobic man who finds reasons not to be with women finally taking the plunge with someone only to find out that they are hiding a few secrets. Sadly, the leads have absolutely no chemistry (and now that I think about it, Myers is sort of weirdly asexual given how much of his stuff is about innuendo and how often it relies on the reproductive parts of the human anatomy), and the jokes veer dangerously into bad comedy club style improv at times. It has an absolutely f****g awful 90's soundtrack featuring "There She Goes" on four occasions during the films run time and unironic use of the Spin Doctors "Two Princes", there are plot holes everywhere, Harriet is a terrible butcher and you know how concerned I am about proper meat preparation, and everyone's hair is appalling. Given all of this it would seem a no-brainer that we would be advising that you give this one a wide berth but with the Bad Dads ultimate arbitration of taste reduced to a single question of "were you not entertained?" and most of us agreeing that there were enough good cameos, weird or unusual touches or sharp writing that we were to some degree or another, well, make of that what you will. Probably that we have terrible taste or that we're easily pleased simpletons, either are true.

This week on the show we're uncovering the secrets of The Pentaverate, the newest comedy creation from master of disguise Mike Myers. Well, we only watched episode 4 so there might be some secrets we missed. Honestly we only wanted to know why Shrek showed up so we just watched that episode. But there's so much more to it than that, including comedy legend Jennifer Saunders slumming it and some jokes that would've been dated back in the 90s. But maybe we're too dumb to get it. Or too woke. One or the other.

Mark welcomes photographer, podcaster, and actor Garrick Hoffman to the show to discuss all the hilarity of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, which came out 25 years ago on May 2, 1997. Garrick remembers watching this perfect sleepover movie as a kid over and over with his family, while Mark was giggling in the theater on a hot day at summer camp. They compare the Mike Myers film to James Bond, which it successfully spoofs, other popular 90s and early 2000s comedy, and even Borat. Plus, they discuss the connections to Demi Moore, Dana Carvey, and more!
Editors - Joseph Krings ACE and Jasmin Way THE PENTAVERATE editors, Joseph Krings ACE and Jasmin Way, first met when Jasmin assisted Joe on the indie feature, THE REBEL IN THE RYE (2017); a biopic about reclusive author J.D. Salinger. Joe was so impressed with the way that Jasmin cut scenes for that film that he knew she was the right choice to join him as co-editor on Myers' new comedy series. THE PENTAVERATE was created by Mike Myers for Netflix and features Myers playing eight different parts throughout the six-episode series. Initially mentioned in Myers' film, SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER (1993), THE PENTAVERATE is about a Canadian journalist who tries to uncover the truth about a secret society of five men who have controlled the world since 1347. JOSEPH KRINGS ACE Joe Krings began his career as a commercial editor in New York City, but quickly grew restless knowing that his real passion was for long form film and television projects. One of Joe's earliest films was a documentary called SUPERMENSCH (2013), helmed by THE PENTAVERATE creator, Mike Myers. From there Joe would go on to make a name for himself with the dramedy feature, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (2016) and indie films such as the aforementioned THE REBEL IN THE RYE (2017) and Sundance stand-outs, AFTER THE WEDDING (2019) and THE EVENING HOUR (2020). JASMIN WAY Jasmin Way is a New York-based film and television editor. Her first feature, SOLACE (2018) premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and won Best Ensemble Cast. Her second documentary feature was the critically-acclaimed THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING (2018) about the history of women in film behind the scenes and in front of the camera. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and was the runner-up for the People's Choice award. In addition to her work on THE PENTAVERATE, Jasmin also worked as an editor on the latest season of David Letterman's MY NEXT GUEST NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION (2022). Editing THE PENTAVERATE In our discussion with THE PENTAVERATE editors Joseph Krings ACE and Jasmin Way, we talk about: The challenge of editing a show where one actor plays eight characters Incorporating Netflix's revolutionary "Fix Plix" technology Cutting out profanity to increase the vulgarity The importance of diction in comedy Why you should never follow up an orgy scene with a shot of children The Credits Get your free 100GB of media transfer at MASV Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Download your free trial of Avid Media Composer Ultimate Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Leave me a message on The Rough Cut website Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Oil up those muscles and sharpen your sword because we are going on an epic journey in a time long ago, when sorcerers, warriors, and fantasy ruled the cinema. Journey with Jay and Shua as they look at classic sword and sorcery movies. Conan the Barbarian has been around for almost 90 years, but 40 years ago the character was brought to life by Arnold Schwarzenegger, early in his career. This movie inspired a plethora of other stories throughout the 80's. This week he stretches his muscles to keep up with Jean Claude Van Damme in the 1994 flick Timecop. And make sure to check out MCULocationScout.com for some Moon Knight locations and soon, more Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Enjoy movies! Conan the Barbarian made his live action debut in 1984 with a John Milius production of the same name. This was not Schwarzenneger's first film, but it definitely put him on the road to stardom. Despite some of it's dated effects and slow pace, it is a beautiful, fantasy epic. There were a bevy of Sword and Sorcery films after the success of Conan. But we saw a few in a similar genre before. Disney films like The Sword in the Stone (1963) and the Harryhausen creations like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and its sequels and Clash of the Titans (1981). Marc Singer brought a different type of barbarian to the fantasy world. His character of Dar in Beastmaster (1982) had the ability to connect and communicate with animals that helped him defeat the evil sorcerer played by Rip Taylor. Oops! I mean Rip Torn. Fantasy lends itself to such a wide variety of movies such as The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) and a rare, early Disney PG movie called Dragonslayer (1981). These kept the interest in these types of mythical worlds. Excalibur (1981) was a medieval tale of King Arthur that brought the ancient tale to the modern screen. It also inspired some cool artwork from Shua's father. Fire and Ice (1983) featured rotoscoping animation from Ralph Bakshi. These are just a tiny sampling of this genre that was so popular during the 80s. There were so many more! Are you a fan of Sword and Sorcery films? What type do you like? Did you read all the way to the bottom? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Now we are dead!” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Mike Meyers is among the comedy greats who have walked the halls of Saturday Night Live, with his popular “Wayne's World” sketch becoming an even more popular movie. After leaving SNL he introduced the world to the archenemies Austin Powers and Dr. Evil, and went on to voice a big green ogre named Shrek in a multi-billion dollar franchise. In this week's “Sunday Sitdown,” Willie Geist gets together with the actor to talk about returning to the spotlight after nearly a decade away with his new Netflix series, The Pentaverate.
Mike Myers is back! Mike Myers? Hard to believe he hasn't done comedy basically in 14 years, but he is back, with a Netflix Show. Chris and Steve try to dissect, is it funny? does it work? is it for us, or just for Mike Myers? One of the most interesting shows we've done on the Episode One Podcast in awhile, The Pentaverate, plus crossovers and 30 second pitches.
Andy Farnsworth joinsKSL-TVto help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 13, 2022. MONDAYS AMIRITE???? Is the very controversial claim at the heart of this huge 80s hit from the Bangles. Evan and Andrew investigate whether Mondays are really persecuting The Bangles orrrrrr was this song perhaps written by an alien who had just learned about human jobs? No, in fact, it was written by Prince, and this episode reveals that he plagiarized one of his own @%#$ songs when phoning in the writing of this overgrown nursery rhyme. DJs and producers, don't miss the absolutely sick sample pack of snares that Evan drops at 17:45, completely manic. Historians, don't miss Andrew's insights about Mike Myers, Fun Days, and Sex Shooters.
