George Harrisons "Living In The Material World" fra 1973 bliver nærlyttet i strålende selskab med Henrik Palle.

In episode 395 of Things We Said Today, Ken Michaels, Allan Kozinn and Darren Devivo choose their favorite and least favorite tracks from each of the Beatles British albums. It was harder than we expected, particularly selecting “least favorite” tracks, since let's face it, the Beatles were the zenith of Western Civ and there are no actual bad tracks. (Hey…I heard that. No. There aren't.) As always, we welcome your thoughts about this episode of the show or any other episode. Considering how much he shares of himself through his frank, tender songs, and how down-to-earth and open he is in live performance and in conversation, Doug Paisley has always seemed to be a bit of an enigma. For one thing, his music seems so truly timeless. It's like the Toronto troubadour's lastest album Say What You Like could just as easily have been released in 1973 as in 2023. His unique blend of the cryptic and plainspoken - along with the specific, cinematic details - gives the sense that he's on a distinct creative journey of his own, seemingly unrelated to trends in the larger musical world. And yet, there are plenty of luminaries from that larger musical world that have collaborated with Doug on his greatly-acclaimed albums. In the past, Doug's records have been graced by contributions from revered artists like Mary Margaret O'Hara and the keyboard genius from The Band, Garth Hudson. On his new album, Doug's evocative songs, expressive guitar playing, and beautiful tenor voice are treated to some stellar production help from his old friend Afie Jurvanen and his band, Bahamas. On tour through Alberta in summer 2023, Doug Paisley stopped by CKUA's Edmonton studios to serenade us with a pair of songs, and to trace his one-of-a-kind creative career. He told us about his musical beginnings with buck-a-Beatles LP buys; the lasting lessons learned in his early onstage experiences, ranging from bluegrass to reggae to performance art; the influence of everyone from outsider folk great Bonnie “Prince” Billy to ‘70s AM country's “Gentle Giant” Don Williams; the way Afie's and Bahamas' support helped unlock the creative breakthrough of Say What You Like; and how writing songs and playing guitar are a great release for the feelings that move you when, as the title track says, “those bygone times come back to visit.” Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Host: Grant Stovel | Graphics: Shaun Friesen | Music: Doug Hoyer | Sound Engineer: Duke Paetz This episode of Hidden Track features live performances from Doug Paisley. Music is used with permission from the artist.

Welcome to the Big Beatles Sort Out, a show in which I, author and musician Garry Abbott, attempt to finally decide my favourite Beatles recordings by scoring each and every one for lyrical content, musicality and production. I am assisted in this venture by my brother and resident Beatles expert, Paul Abbott, with a deep knowledge of the Beatles and the wider context in which they operated. Each episode we explore and score 5 songs from the Beatles full recording catalogue. - but not this week! No! Because this week is episode 20 A Bonus 2 Black Album Special! Yes, Paul has tried his hand at selecting and sequencing the mythical 'Black Album' or 13th Beatles LP from tracks recorded by Beatles solo or in other groups in the 5 years following their split. As there are 14 songs to go at, I've not included the snippets in the episode itself due to length, but you can hear Paul's playlist in it's entirety here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3Xe7HRUNwEUSsIKD8RAynt I did say in the episode I would list them out here too, but I think that might spoil it for fans of surprises, so even if you don't like Spotify, you can use the above link to get the list and then go listen somewhere else! Also, there is the usual 'On this Beatle day' and I round off the episode with a look at the album chart and a few other interesting charts from the main episode scores so far. Please let anyone know about this podcast who might be interested! You can contact me on Twitter @big_sort or @Garry_Abbott, or via my website www.garryabbott.co.uk. Please listen out for Paul's other Podcasts, 'The Head Ballet' - all about novelty music, and 'Hark! 87th Precinct Podcast' - all about Ed McBain's seminal police procedural novel series. If you want to make charts of your own, you can view all the scores so far as of the previous weeks episode here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Qc7mHMeBBM9LSPUV0L6zrYrF2Rib9eX-Xssua-Wox3g/edit?usp=sharing
Curdy buys an old Beatles LP and inside is a mysterious letter from years before about a medallion and Haley's recounting of her strange experience with it. Family connections and time travel can bring us a glimpse of other worlds.
Over four years had passed since the official break-up of the Beatles, and by the tail end of 1974 the world of music was changing, evolving and finding new stars to light the way. But despite these shifts in faces and trends, the Beatles' legend remained surprisingly vital, with not only a slew of successful solo material from the former fabs, but also from tributes such as the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road off-broadway musical. Though it was panned by critics, this production tapped into a public yearning for a return of the band that changed everything - and while a formal reunion was never to be, Beatle music was alive and well in the cultural zeitgeist. But nostalgia wasn't the only currency of the day, November 1974 also brought with it Ringo Starr's new album Goodnight Vienna. To follow-up the monster success of 1973's Ringo album, Starr and producer Richard Perry brought in new guest stars and new hooky material in the hopes of repeating their own critical and commercial heights the year prior. John Lennon also returned to lend his friend a helping hand on the title track, as well as lead-off single Only You (an arrangement Lennon and Harry Nilsson had been work-shopping for the ill-fated Oldies But Moldies project). From the Elton John/Bernie Taupin-penned Snookeroo to the novelty No-No Song, Goodnight Vienna was indeed another successful endeavor - though ultimately fell far short of its predecessor. And as 1974 draws to a close, there's still another solo Beatles LP ready for release... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

With the release of the McCartney album in April of 1970, Paul McCartney brought to light what had been his reality for nearly a year: The Beatles were no more. He and wife Linda were an instant target for angry fans and angry press for being the messenger of this awful news that up to this point was merely speculation and rumor on the part of the public. Many, including John Lennon, saw Paul’s move as a strategy to sell the aforementioned solo album, but if that WAS the case, it was a bizarre album to go out on such a limb for. The McCartney LP is a homemade piece of rock and roll experimentation with moments of Beatle-esq sound that baffled most upon first listen. Songs like Maybe I’m Amazed and Every Night could have handily been Beatles cuts, while oddball instrumentals like Valentine Day, Kreen Akrore and Hot As Sun more evoked former bandmate Lennon’s “Unfinished Music” series (albeit with a slightly more commercial ring to it). And like Lennon before him, McCartney’s proclamation came mere weeks before the debut of the long-defunct Let it Be LP and film which at last saw its release on May 8th. If fans were baffled by “Singalong Junk”, they were certainly equally baffled by the rough-n-tumble new Beatles LP, where the slick studio soundscapes listeners were accustomed to were replaced by impromptu jams and after-the-fact production trickery by producer (or should we say salvager) Phil Spector. This was a rough time for all four now-former Beatles, a moniker which even know rings as sadly as it did in the springtime of 1970... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
