It's mind boggling!  PART ONE Paul and Scott chat about crossing a new friendship milestone and the long road to getting to speak with the unbelievably cool Jeff Barry. PART TWO Our in-depth interview with Jeff BarryABOUT JEFF BARRY Jeff Barry began his career as a recording artist for RCA and Decca Records, but attracted more attention for his original songs. After scoring pop hits with “Tell Laura I Love Her” and Sam Cooke's recording of “Teenage Sonata” in 1960, Jeff joined forces with Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector to pen such classics as “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “Then He Kissed Me,” “Be My Baby,” “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” “Chapel of Love,” and “River Deep – Mountain High.” Greenwich and Barry also recorded together as the Raindrops while continuing to find success with other artists, including landing number one hits with “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy,” “Leader of the Pack,” and the Tommy James and the Shondells recording of “Hanky Panky.” Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Rock Songs” included six Barry-Greenwich compositions, more than any other non-performing songwriting team. As a producer, Barry helmed such hits as “Cherry, Cherry” by Neil Diamond and “I'm a Believer” by The Monkees. After parting ways with Greenwich, Jeff began writing with Andy Kim, with whom he had the biggest hit of 1969 when he co-wrote and produced “Sugar, Sugar” by the fictional cartoon band The Archies. A few years later, Jeff was nominated for the Song of the Year Grammy for Olivia Newton John's 1974 chart-topping recording of “I Honestly Love You.” Additionally, he found success on the country charts in the 1970s and ‘80s with top 5 singles such as “Out of Hand,” recorded by Gary Stewart” and “Lie to You For Your Love,” recorded by the Bellamy Brothers. Never bound by genre categories, he also enjoyed top 5 R&B successes in those decades with songs such as “Heavy Makes You Happy” for the Staple Singers and “The Last Time I Made Love,” a song he wrote with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil that was recorded by Joyce Kennedy and Jeffrey Osborne. In addition to writing more than 50 different songs that have reached the top 40 on the Billboard charts, Jeff penned the theme songs for TV shows such as One Day at a Time (“This Is It”), The Jeffersons (“Movin' on Up”), and Family Ties (“Without Us”). In 2019 he and writing partner Clarence Jey composed and wrote songs for the animated Nickelodeon show Lego City Adventures.  Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich are in the top 20 of Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Musical Journey Through the Final Week of December: This Week in Music History As the calendar year draws to a close, the week of December 22nd through December 28th stands as a powerful reminder that music history never sleeps—not even during the holidays. In this captivating episode of “This Week in Music History,” hosts Buzz Knight and Harry Jacobs take listeners on an extraordinary journey through decades of musical milestones, tragic losses, and triumphant achievements that have shaped the soundtrack of our lives. The conversation opens with a poignant reflection on the end of another year of exploring music’s rich tapestry. Buzz muses on how, despite covering similar calendar dates year after year, they continue to uncover new stories and perspectives. “When you think about it, you would think, well, if you do it year after year, you’re going to be talking about the same things,” Buzz observes. “And the truth is, we continue to uncover new and different things.” This sentiment perfectly captures the infinite depth of music history and the endless stories waiting to be told. The departure of bassist Bunny Carlos and the subsequent addition of Rick Nielsen’s son, Dax, initially appeared to follow the pattern of other famous rock family transitions, like Michael Anthony’s replacement by Wolfgang Van Halen in Van Halen. However, the reality proved far more nuanced. Buzz’s research uncovered ongoing strife within the band, though Carlos remains part of the Cheap Trick corporation—a business structure similar to Journey’s arrangement with Steve Perry. This setup ensures that founding members maintain ownership stakes even when they’re no longer actively touring, though it can also create lasting tension and legal complications. This indie pop alternative band has taken an innovative approach to managing interpersonal relationships: group therapy. Band members openly discuss how they’ve used professional counseling to navigate the challenges of creative collaboration, life on the road, and the inevitable conflicts that arise when passionate artists work together for years. Cocker’s career highlights include his cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” which became the theme for the television series “The Wonder Years,” and “Up Where We Belong,” his duet with Jennifer Warnes from the film “An Officer and a Gentleman.” The latter song became inextricably linked with that powerful film starring Richard Gere and Lou Gossett Jr., whose portrayal of a drill instructor was genuinely frightening and contributed to one of cinema’s most memorable moments—Gere’s character’s desperate declaration: “I got nowhere else to go.” Eddie Vedder: The Humble Superstar December 23rd celebrates the birthday of Eddie Vedder, born in 1964, whose appreciation for musical history and those who came before him sets him apart in an industry often dominated by ego. The hosts draw parallels to Dave Grohl, noting how both artists exhibit genuine humility and respect for their influences. Vedder’s collaborations with Neil Young, particularly their version of “Rockin’ in the Free World,” helped establish his credibility beyond Pearl Jam circles, while his passionate renditions of The Who’s classics—especially “Love, Reign o’er Me”—have become legendary in their own right. Vedder’s versatility shines through in his cover work, from The Waiting by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to The English Beat’s “Save It for Later,” featured in the television series “The Bear.” His interpretation of Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” particularly resonates, described as “so beautiful” in its delicate handling of Petty’s original composition. The discussion of “The Bear” opens a tangent about the show’s exceptional soundtrack curation, featuring all Tom Petty covers including a barn-burning version of “Runnin’ Down the Dream” by Larkin Poe. Despite Pearl Jam’s reputation for deep cuts and extensive catalogs—which might intimidate casual fans—the hosts acknowledge being captivated whenever they hear Vedder sing anything. His voice and interpretive skills transcend the barrier of familiarity, making even unknown material compelling. The Unsung Guitar Legends of Country Music The conversation shifts to Glen Campbell, whose passing on December 24th prompts reflection on his extraordinary but often underappreciated guitar skills. Campbell represents a generation of country musicians whose technical prowess gets overshadowed by genre stereotypes. Like Roy Clark, Campbell could do virtually anything on guitar, yet many people don’t associate country music with virtuoso instrumentalists. Campbell’s session work tells the story of his versatility—he played on albums by The Monkees, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, and soundtracks for Elvis films and Phil Spector productions. This breadth demonstrates how the Nashville studio system produced some of the most skilled musicians in any genre, even if they didn’t always receive recognition outside country music circles. The discussion of Campbell also touches on Brian Wilson’s 1964 breakdown, a tragic moment that had long-lasting consequences for the Beach Boys and Wilson himself. The psychological damage inflicted by Wilson’s abusive father Murry Wilson—compared to Joe Jackson’s treatment of his children—demonstrates how family trauma can derail even the most talented artists. Brian’s struggles with touring and performing were just the beginning of severe mental health challenges that would plague him throughout his career. The Police: Reunion Done Right In 2007, The Police earned recognition as the year’s highest-grossing tour, thirty years after the band’s inception and 24-25 years after their previous collaboration. The reunion tour, which Buzz witnessed in Las Vegas, comprised over 150 shows worldwide and generated nearly $400 million—not a bad payday for a comeback. Once upon a time there were no songs about being lonely at Christmas. And then, two early rock-and-roll legends, the King of Rock and Roll Elvis, and lifelong backup singer Darlene Love (overshadowed by megaproducer Phil Spector) released two songs to hit the hearts of people missing their baby on Christmas Day. Today, we feature a Christmas cracker that offers some new perspectives on one of our most treasured holiday traditions - The Xmas Song: First, The Turtles, singing “Christmas is My Time of Year,” then, the esteemed actor, Harvey Keitel, telling an off the wall Christmas story, from the film Smoke.Putting on a favorite holiday tape or CD as you wrap the presents or trim the tree was always a highly anticipated ritual - Frank, Dino, Elvis, or Bing never failed to make the season bright. In the 60's Rock era, of course, Phil Spector's album was a must. Every pop artist has made one, even Bob Dylan. It made Irving Berlin and Mel Torme millions.  It's generally a can't miss proposition. But, I'll bet you never considered these selections. One isn't even a song; and then there's the Turtles number, which is seemingly on the money, but not universally known. THE TURTLES"Christmas is My Time of Year" was written by the jewish Howard Kaylan and the Turtle's bassist and veteran of the Modern Folk Quartet, Chip Douglas. Douglas also produced, populating the recording with such country rock luminaries as Gram Parsons and Linda Ronstadt. The track has a folksy flair with its twangy guitars and dobros. It's military 4 on the floor marching beat gives it an overly perky, trying too hard feel, but it's still a lot of fun - and that's the mark of a good Turtles song. isn't it?: always promoting optimism and good feelings. Even when they're singing dark material like PF Sloan's “Let Me Be” the music counterpoints the dreariness with sunshine.HARVEY KEITEL in SMOKERich threw this curveball into the mix, and I LOVE IT! Mr. Keitel has always been a favorite of ours - and in this clip from Wayne Wang's Smoke he knocks it out of the park with this shaggy holiday story negotiating the mixed up urges of conscience and larceny. At the end of the segment there is a black and white rendering of the story accompanied by Tom Waits, singing “Innocent when you Dream”.And, it's here that the overall theme emerges: Christmas is that time when we aspire to live up to our best selves. But, there are so many contradictory images that interfere with this aspiration. We are exhorted to consume, going into debt for the good of the economy, and to our peril. All around us we might notice that the lonely and disenfranchised are suffering worse than ever during this time. So, we look away, trying not to face the disturbing prospect that it could be us next year. We're only human, after all - but, to be better more than just one day out of the year shouldn't be asking too much. But, how to begin?

She is best known as the lead vocalist on the Crystals' hits "Then He Kissed Me" and "Da Doo Ron Ron", "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" & many others.Ms. Brooks also sang lead on three songs on the album A Christmas Gift for You, one of only two Christmas albums inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame.In 1968, she appeared in the original Broadway production of the musical Hair, where she performed the song "Aquarius". She would later appear in the Broadway show Two Gentlemen of Verona in 1971. She also toured with and recorded for various artists (such as the Neville Brothers, Bobby Womack and Isaac Hayes); made short appearances in films; and contributed songs to different movie soundtracks (including the 1970 film Cotton Comes to Harlem).In 1983, she and her family moved to London, England, where she and Idris continued their careers in music. In 1990, they moved to Vienna, Austria where she continued singing and writing songs with her husband Idris Muhammad and also hosted a local radio show; they lived in Vienna until 1997.Andrew Edge sang backing vocals on her BMG (Austria) CD LaLa Brooks & Friends in 1994. Brooks moved back to the United States at the turn of the century and resides in the East Village. She is now a grandmother of three, has her own band and is still performing. Of course, in Al fashion, he copies the style to perfection. Harmonically, it's a simple I-vi-ii-V chord progression reminiscent of the 1960s.Lyrically, the song is awash in Cold War nuclear disaster tropes. Yankovic's label, Scotti Brothers Records, insisted that he record a Christmas album. However, after Yankovic presented the song to his label, they relented, because it was "a little different from what they were expecting." After the song was written and recorded, Yankovic wanted to release the song as a commercial single, but Scotti Bros. refused. Eventually, Scotti Bros. released the song as a promotional single and then commercially.Sleigh bells ringing? Check. Trimming the tree? Uh huh. Atom bombs dropping? Only if it creates new mutants! The Crystals hit number one with their version of Gene Pitney's ‘He's a Rebel' on 3rd November, 1962, but it was actually another of Phil Spector's girl-groups, The Blossoms, who had recorded the song. The two groups never even met, until awkwardly posing together for Spector's iconic Christmas album cover.
