Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong delves into the case of Phil Spector. Once a legendary music producer known for his unique use of sound, Spector slowly became a figure of mystery – and controversy. Years of erratic behavior and isolation culminated into Spector's undoing one morning in February of 2003, when actress Lana Clarkson was found shot to death in his mansion. Candice explores how a dangerous mix of mental illness, substance abuse, and a combination of fears led one of music's most famous figures down a dark path of death and destruction.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Everybody's feelin' groovy, because this week we're traveling way back to 1970 with bassist/vocalist Ron Flynt and guitarist/vocalist Steve Allen from legendary power poppers 20/20! Aside from remembering the staggering number of great records released during our year of focus, we celebrate the release of 20/20's new album Back to California, their first LP in over 25 years, out now on Spyderpop / Big Stir Records. Whether you're a newcomer to the band or an ardent fan of their classics like "Yellow Pills", "Cheri", "Remember The Lightning", and "Nuclear Boy", prepare to fall in love with the hooks n' harmonies of the new record, which hearkens back to their roots but maintains a fresh and modern sound. Plus, Steve and Ron talk about feeling the magic again, reminisce about the early days of the band, the recording of their signature track (1979's "Yellow Pills"), hanging out in Phil Spector's mansion, dancing with Linda Blair, rubbing shoulders with Hollywood stars at Sunset Strip haunts...and did O3L turn into the High Times podcast?!? Finally, we give the guys their belated induction into the Power Pop Hall of Fame...which we're in no way authorized to do, but they weren't aware they were already in it! Great stories, lots of laughs, and amazing music...turns out hindsight really is 20/20! Thanks to Rex Broome and Christina Bulbenko from Big Stir Records for the introduction. In dieser epische Musikzeitreise episode of Past Tens: The Top 10 Zeitmaschine, your trusty hosts — Herr Doktor Dave and Der Wilden Miltmeister — strap on their sonic lederhosen and dive kopfüber into the Billboard Top 10 Albums for the Woche ending April 12, 1975 — ja wohl! With all the precision of a Bavarian clockmaker and the subtlety of a bratwurst cannon, they analyze und rocken diskutieren legendary platten from musikalische titans like Led Zeppelin (or as they say in Munich, Blei Zeppelin), David Bowie (Der Dünne Weirdo), John Lennon (Der Friedensbringer mit der Brille), and Earth, Wind & Fire (Erde, Wind und Feuerkraft!). This episode is vollgepackt with music history, lustige Anekdoten, and enough nostalgia to fill a beer stein the size of Düsseldorf. Dave und Milt pay tribute to the unterschätzte Helden — unsung heroes like Minnie Riperton (Die Göttin der Hohen Töne) and Robin Trower (Der Gitarren-Zauberer von Essex). Of course, it wouldn't be a Past Tens episode without their patented spielfreudige Segmente like The Play Date (Das Spielzeit-Quiz!), where they test each other's Rock und Roll Gehirn on song trivia — and The Substitution (Der Platten-Tausch!), where they boot an album off the list like a rude tourist from Oktoberfest and replace it with a beloved verlorene Klassiker. This episode is ein absoluter Ohrenschmaus for music lovers who appreciate both the Mega-Hits and Tiefe Schnittwunden (deep cuts) from the golden, shag-carpeted glory of the Mid-70er Jahre. Mach schnell! Put on your headphones, grab a frothy beverage, and crank up Past Tens: The Top 10 Zeitmaschine! Jawohl, baby! For our big Season 2 Finale, Discograffiti's opted to fudge the timeline just a bit in order to give the proper red-carpet drum-roll gravitas to Season 3, especially since much of the music on The Beach Boys' “Stack-O-Tracks” was created during this period, by the musicians who'd go on to create 99% of the music created during Season 3. In this very special episode, the inimitable Don Randi and Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco's son Denny Tedesco—director of the excellent music docs The Wrecking Crew and The Immediate Family—come together for an overview of the black sheep of The Beach Boys' 1960s catalog, plus a history of the musicians who made most of the music on it…not to mention most of Pet Sounds & Smile. Here's just a few of the many things that Don and Denny discuss with Discograffiti in this podcast:A sneak peek preview of Denny's upcoming third music doc;The very different original track listing for “Stack-O-Tracks”;The origin story and early days of The Wrecking Crew; The many reasons for the disbursement of that classic group of great players; The resentments of the band members who wound up being replaced on their records by the 1960s session guys;If Don really knew that Brian was a genius at the time, without the benefit of hindsight;Plus, some background on the ill-fated 1992 Phil Spector session with The Wrecking Crew that never quite came off.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. In the aftermath of The Beatles' earth-shattering split, George Harrison stepped into his own spotlight with the monumental 'All Things Must Pass'. Though initially conceived with perhaps less fanfare than his former band's releases, this ambitious triple LP would unexpectedly solidify Harrison's status as a formidable solo artist. It magnificently showcases his long-gestating songwriting prowess, exploring spiritual themes and personal reflections. Despite its epic scale, the iconic "Wall of Sound" production by Phil Spector, and perhaps some initial underestimation, 'All Things Must Pass' has become an undeniable classic of the early 1970s and a testament to George Harrison's unique and enduring musical vision.Episode Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6uikBG6wniPod8XJb7iKaI?si=d235e902299d4e02* Follow Long Live Rock 'N' Roll online: https://linktr.ee/longlivernrpod* Get in touch and/or leave us a review: longliverocknrollpodcast@gmail.com* Listen & Review us on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/long-live-rock-n-roll/id1581139831* Listen & Review us on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wZW1BYAw9wJ6Z5blo2uGj#AllThingsMustPass #GeorgeHarrison #ClassicRock #MySweetLord #1970sMusic #RockMasterpiece #SpiritualRock #TheBeatles #RockHistory

Frank MeyerTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Frank Meyer. Frank has been a staple in the film, television & punk scene for the past 30+ years. In this episode, we chat about his growing up with some of the most supportive parents of their era. Frank's folks not only supported his hopes and dreams, but they also even took him to see some of the most iconic acts of all time. Frank recounts stories of seeing The Blues Brothers live, and even Eddie Murphy's Raw & Delirious shows. Then we get into some of Frank's work in television & film. Having spent several years with the G4 channel, Frank was an early podcaster with a very cool insight into the format. We bounce all over the place in this one. Frank shares stories of his antics with some of music's greats; like Cherie Currie, David Lee Roth, Dave Mustane, Van Halen, and Eddie Spaghetti. I get him to explain why he wrote books about Phil Spector, The Ramones, and even his series From Dude To Dad. Frank not only has his own bands: Frank Meyer & The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs here in the US, but also Trading Aces in Europe! Plus, he plays with FEAR, Cherie Currie, Range War, and Handsome Dick Manitoba's The Dictators. Fun stories involving The Stooges, and being a good hang. Frank even made documentaries about his buddy Hell Razah, and another one about Hip Hop 101. Check those out everywhere documentaries are available! Finally, we discuss Frank's debut solo album Living Between The Lines. I wouldn't be me if I didn't ask to play my favorite track from the album (Blue Radio)! Wu Tang Clan, Drew Barrymore, Eddie Spaghetti, and Keel stories abound!!
In this episode of Zone 7, Crime Scene Investigator, Sheryl McCollum, sits down with Linda Kenney Baden, a former prosecutor and private defense attorney to dissect the legal intricacies, discrepancies, and various ethical issues surrounding the trial of Karen Read. They cover the problems with evidence collection, the lead investigator's conduct, and the lack of a clear cause of death. Sheryl and Linda also discuss the role of experts in the retrial, what could be expected during the new trial, and the emotional toll on both Read and O'Keefe's families. On January 29, 2022, Karen Read is accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, with her SUV during a snow storm. Read's second trial is now set to begin with jury selection on April 1, 2025 after months of additional pretrial hearings following the mistrial. We're Talking Producers!
In the magic factories of R&R I'll talk about that handful of recording studios that captured those magical moments on tape for all time. That unique time from the late 50's thru the early 70's that has never been duplicated. The night Pink Floyd first met the Beatles recording Sgt .Pepper and what they witnessed to amaze and inspire them to experiment in the studio. The night the Four Seasons barely escaped with their lives recording their next #1 hit. Why did John Lennon want to be tied from a rope, hanging from the ceiling while recording at Abbey Road studio ? How did Led Zeppelin come up with "Stairway to Heaven" and what was the devil connection between that song and the Mr. Ed TV show theme ?...And if you ever wondered why we can't quite understand what the Kingsmen were singing on "Louie, Louie" or why the musicians in the studio were stunned and amazed by what happened with Phil Spector recording his masterpiece with Tina Turner...Well. I guess you'll just have to listen ...Enjoy !!
Today's episode is on "George Harrison: Living in the Material World", a 2011 film about The Quiet One directed by Martin Scorsese. It's available on Max. Our guest today is George Harrison and Bob Dylan superfan Britt Eisnor. Check out her excellent Dylan content on Instagram. This movie is about George's mysticism, more or less, and weaves in and out of his very famous life story. There are some great talking heads, not all of whom are great people (I'm looking at you, Phil Spector) or come of as well as they think they do (and now I'm looking at you, Eric Clapton), and one conspicuous absence. Also, this movie would have you believe that George Harrison only recorded one solo album. It seems like his career as a musician continued on past 1970, but who can really tell for sure? Welcome back to Transmissions from Aquarium Drunkard. We're kicking off our 10th season with host Jason Woodbury in conversation with Will Oldham, the man behind Bonnie “Prince” Billy, who appeared on the very first Transmissions interview back in 2016. This episode flips a gentle and honest bird to The Big Online Machine: "Some people I think are fully integrated and are just ready to, if not officially upload their souls to the Metaverse, more or less do that. And those are people with whom we just don't engage and won't engage with in the future. And that makes it a little bit easier because we are tribalizing into those who are Metaverse citizens versus those who are citizens of the tactile universe, the experienceable universe with your full five senses and beyond." Oldham's latest album is called The Purple Bird, and it's as close to a country or Americana crossover album as he's ever made. Though he's far from a stranger to western sounds, this new one finds him working with songs that resulted from multi-songwriter sessions in Nashville, facilitated by the record's producer, David Ferguson. Not only is The Purple Bird one of the most collaborative records he's ever made—it's also perhaps his most topical. It's all in here: death, life, sex, fear, guns, and nods to the divisions and stresses that plague so many of us in these strange days. But it's a big hearted and hopeful listen, too. In this conversation, Woodbury asks Oldham how the album took shape, and digs into Will's suspicions about online culture, the influence of artists like Phil Ochs and Steve Albini, his experiences in the studio with Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin, and why—all things considered—he would've worked with the late Phil Spector. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. Fort Wayne's Troy Shondell was one of Indiana's first rock and roll stars. He's best remembered for his 1961 single “This Time”. That song went to number 6 on the Billboard chart and sold over 3 million copies. Shondell never managed to recapture the success of “This Time” and is often labeled a one-hit wonder. But there's much more to Shondell's story. He toured with Chuck Berry, recorded with Phil Spector, and produced legendary funk sessions with the Patterson Twins, and Trust at Fort Wayne's Star Fox studio. Join us to hear rare recordings from Troy Shondell.
In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, O.F. Cieri reads an excerpt from her novel ‘Backmask' and discusses the inspiration behind the story and the music that shaped it. Inspired by pop music history and written in the style of ‘60s horror pulp, ‘Backmask' is the fake history of a conspiracy theory surrounding the Satanic agenda to control children's minds. Nicholas Hush, 1960s record producer, has a vision for the future of pop music. After a series of prophetic dreams, he wants to combine occult imagery with upcoming trends to create a new, groundbreaking look. His secretary, Valerie Chill, is tasked with finding consultants and funding while he crafts the perfect album. Quickly their project becomes entangled in other, larger machinations, and two teenage pop acts become responsible for international intrigue, brainwashing, and an occult massacre. Taking inspiration from the lives of Joe Meek, Phil Spector, and Timothy Leary, ‘Backmask' is a speculative look at how hidden messages got into pop music. O.F. Cieri is a self-taught writer based out of NYC. She has been published in ‘Ligeia Magazine' and ‘Misery Tourism'. In 2013 she won first place in BMCC's Poetry Competition. In 2016 she won an Honorable Mention in LaborArts Make Work Visible Competition. Her nonfiction has been carried by ‘Hyperallergic' and the ‘Invisible Oranges'. In February of 2023 she published her second book, ‘Lockdown Laureate', with Castaigne Publishing. Her third book, ‘Backmask', was published by Malarkey in June of 2023. In part 2 of our coverage of the Lana Turner case, Jac and Alexis conclude with a deep dive into the frenzied trial. Phil Spector finally went to court for the murder of Lana Clarkson in 2007, almost 4 years after her senseless death. Under the pervasive glare of the media, it would take six years and two jury trials, both lasting for months at a time, for the case to be adjudicated. Yet questions still linger for Lana's best friend, Pie McLaughlin.
In the early morning hours of February 3, 2003, actress Lana Clarkson left the Los Angeles venue, the House of Blues, with famed music producer, Phil Spector. Within hours, she would be dead from a single gunshot wound to the head. Under the cloud of “celebrity justice” and the perception that celebrities in Los Angeles were not held to the same law and standards as the general public, the LA County District Attorney's office was determined to get a conviction. With endless funds available and access to the best experts and attorneys in the world, Spector fought back. In part 1 of this 2 parter, Jac and Alexis delve into the sad circumstances of Lana Clarkson's death, and bizarre lead up to the high profile trial.

On this episode, Derek sits with Carol Conners. Carol is a legendary Singer and Song Writer. Best known for being the lead vocalist for Phil Spector's “Teddy Bears”, Carol went on to write some incredible songs including co-writing one song, which I consider one of the greatest ever written, “Gonna Fly Now”, the theme song to “Rocky”. She has penned a new memoir, “Elvis, Rocky and Me…The Carol Conners Story” about her whirlwind romance with the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley and various other chapters of her incredible life. Tom's been really into a Phil Spector true crime documentary and his many court room wigs. We open the show with another clip from the "smoothly, slowly, gently" guy, before revisiting #FartGate2024 and possibly coming to a conclusion on it too. Tom also reads an email about a new type of airtight, they debate which Olympic athletes are the most bangable, talk some trash about pickleball, peek at the dark side of IG, plus some Toks, and much more!
