Music in Film: The Real Deal 2020 года. Blowin' in the Wind • Bob Dylan,Purple Haze • Jimi Hendrix,I Feel Good • James Brown,Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds • The Beatles,Whole Lotta Love • Led Zeppelin.
This week, we don't want to make it bad, so we're going to take a sad song and make it better. The book of Jude may only be one chapter, but it's jam-packed with stuff for this show to talk about. Who wrote it, and when? Who was it written to? What grumblers is it mad about? We'll attempt to answer all these questions and more. Then, speaking of grumblers, we have some of our own to deal with! Whenever Dr. Dan says that the Bible is not a monotheistic book, people come out of the woodwork with scriptures that seem to contradict him. In our final segment, Dan will look at those verses and discuss whether they say what people are saying they say. ---- HEY! (20:42-35:58) – Alex Palou from Chip Ganassi Racing joins Query & Company following his win on Sunday in St. Petersburg to kick off the NTT IndyCar season to recap it. Plus, Alex comments on the challenges that Scott Dixon had racing without a radio, explains how he remains so calm in during the race, and comments on if its challenging having two weeks between races. (37:26-45:10) – The first hour of the show concludes with Jake asking Eddie for his opinion on which end of movie song is stronger between Hey Jude and Layla. Eddie wraps up the segment by listing the record of team’s traveling from the west coast back home for their next game. (45:10-1:06:43) – ESPN.com’s Stephen Holder joins the program with Jake Query to recap the NFL Combine comments about the Colts being non-committal towards Anthony Richardson being the team’s starter next season. Holder reacts to Jake saying that the Colts have to entice a quarterback to come to Indianapolis, assesses if the time is right for Indianapolis to splurge in free agency to build up the roster, and weighs in on yesterday’s conversation Jake had with Eddie about sports coats. (1:06:43-1:16:07) – At the end of the of the first hour of the show, Eddie started compiling a list of the record of Midwest teams traveling west in the Big Ten. (1:14:34-1:26:23) – Hour number two quickly concludes with Jake explaining why he doesn’t think Mike Woodson returns next season no matter how the season ends. Jake goes even as far to say he would be surprised if Woodson returned with an NCAA Tournament championship. (1:26:23-1:49:53) – Scott Agness from Fieldhouse Files joins Jake Query on today’s show to explain what has allowed Tyrese Haliburton to look like the Haliburton fans started falling in love with last season. Agness identified Obi Toppin and Aaron Nesmith as the two biggest beneficiaries of when Haliburton is playing at this level and breaks Jake’s heart by telling him the mascot hall of fame no longer exists. (1:49:53-1:56:06) – Eddie takes off unexpectedly, so Nathaniel steps in and saves the day. Jake talks about what a Purdue win means tonight as the Boilermakers look to forget about their 4-game losing skid. (1:56:06-2:04:05) – Today’s show closes with Jake and Eddie giving away a pair of tickets for a listener to go see Pantera! Ian Leslie posted his ‘64 Reasons To Celebrate Paul McCartney' in 2020 and the viral reaction to its piercing and original points encouraged him to write ‘John & Paul: A Love Story In Songs'. Do we need another Beatles book? We do if it's this one! It's exceptionally good and highly recommended. The conventional wisdom for decades was that John was the tormented, anti-establishment genius and Paul the effortlessly tune-churning, bourgeois poser. Ian's book points up that their deep devotion to each other and telepathic, close relationship was the root of the supernatural partnership that made those songs possible. The two of them were, as he puts it, “the bubble within the bubble – and the deeper you get, the more mysterious the story becomes.” He talks to us here about … … their powerplays and their underlying rivalries for the leadership of the group. … why the Beatles were in another league - “like Shakespeare versus Johnson or Marlowe”. … how a songwriting duo where both wrote words and music gave them an extraordinary advantage. … the writing of Yesterday and John's fear that Paul might no longer need the group and leave. … Paul's discovery of his “superpowers” between ‘64 and '66. … how current groups now have “intimacy councillors” and in any other band the unmanageable Lennon would have been ejected. … In My Life, Hey Jude and other songs they wrote about each other. … how there was “an element of their fathers about them, of stiff upper lip” and displays of physical affection were rare. … Paul as “the omnivorous culture-vore” in avant garde London while John was horizontal in suburbia. … why Paul's pace and creativity must have been psychologically punishing for the others. … and how the emotional landscape shifted with the arrival of Yoko and Linda. We try not to gatekeep. We try to resist nostalgia, but on some days, we feel the purest expression possible in comics can only occur through monthly serialization. Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm return to the podcast for the third month, discussing Spectrum #3, the latest entry in their magical, sci-fi tour through an alternate musical history. As you'll hear Rick Quinn say at some point in our conversation, Spectrum #3 is not their "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Hey Jude." It's twenty-two pages; it's their three-minute pop song, and nothing is more simplistically significant than a three-minute pop song. Lives are often altered within those beautiful constraints. We're halfway through the Mad Cave Studios series and our monthly Book Club discussion of it. Feel free to jump on board here, but also, catching up won't take you long. Find the links to those conversations below. Spectrum #3 introduces more characters and artistic mediums for our heroes and readers to consider. Last month, we explored how fine art interacts with music, and now, through the character of Walton Naves, we look at photography's relationship to sound. What separates the "click" from the picture triggered by it? As always, Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm are more than willing to travel deep with us into Spectrum. This time, they're packing their own notes! We discuss how the third issue still reveals their discovery of the material and how next month's comic will show them confidently accepting its mission. Between the pages, lives were literally born, and perspectives radically transformed. Can you find the page created between childlessness and fatherhood? Just look for signs of exhaustion and obsessive detail. Spectrum 1 - 3 are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the fourth issue will arrive in shops on March 19th. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. And follow Rick Quinn on his Website, Bluesky, and Instagram. Ever tried to choose which two 80's Pop albums/cassettes you'd be willing to part with? That's the musical dilemma we tackled in this week's episode of "Music in My Shoes." Our journey starts with a random list of 28 cassettes, that Jimmy and I dive headfirst into, looking for the first 2 out and the first 2 in. Music is subjective and deeply personal, and our lively debate underscores just that as we reflect on the albums we just can't let go. Play along with us, with the list below. And that's not all—we also take you through our top five Super Bowl halftime shows, a list packed with electrifying memories from Michael Jackson's game-changing performance to U2's heartfelt tribute to 9/11. Each show left a lasting impact, with Prince's rain-soaked guitar solos and Paul McCartney's crowd-rousing "Hey Jude" sing-along standing out. As we meander through these iconic moments, we also pause to recall the timeless resonance of certain albums and even share a detour into the world of sports with the 1980 "Miracle on Ice." We look back at Aerosmith guesting in the 'Wayne's World' sketch on Saturday Night Live in 1990. Chris O'Dell has led a fascinating life; one that planted her firmly in rock royalty's inner circle in the 60s and 70s. Befriending Derek Taylor in LA, she soon found herself working for the Beatles' Apple Corps in London. While there she was present for the recording of The White Album, Abbey Road, Let it Be, and sang in the Hey Jude chorus. She sat on the rooftop while the Beatles played their last live performance in January of 1969 and even lived with George Harrison and Pattie Boyd at Friar Park. She went on to be one of the first - if not, THE first - female tour managers, working with the likes of George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan on his 'Rolling Thunder Revue' tour. She inspired George Harrison to pen the song, "Miss O'Dell,” she's the subject of Leon Russell's “Pisces Apple Lady” and “Hummingbird," she is the “woman down the hall,” in the Joni Mitchell song, “Coyote,” and her picture can be seen on the back cover of The Stones's 1972 masterpiece, Exile on Main Street. Note: PLS LISTEN BEFORE LIGHTING YOUR TORCHES AND GATHERING YOUR PITCHFORKS! Written as a way to show sympathy and encouragement to young Julian Lennon in the face of his parents' divorce, "Hey Jude" is obviously one of the high water marks of modern popular music. It's a brilliantly composed song with a powerhouse vocal from Paul, showcasing his ability to go from the sweetest, most emotive and sensitive places to an absolute beast, shredding his voice and screaming from the pits of his you know whats. The rest of the lads turn in a perfect accompaniment, all serving the song as it builds to a chorus that is the prototype for the lighters-aloft stadium anthem, designed to unite masses of people. I've experienced what I think may be the closest thing to nirvana singing along to this with Paul and 70,000 strangers, and it's amazing. But once you've done that, and you've heard the record a million times, that record doesn't really compare to that moment. In fact, I find myself not really connecting to the record in that way at all anymore, and more often than not, rarely choose to listen to it. It's a victim of overexposure in a way, but maybe that's just a me problem? To help me sort this out, we've called on our old friend James Campion, who literally wrote the book on the subject, Sing A Sad Song: The Emotional Currency of Hey Jude. James joins us to chat about subjective preference vs objective quality, Paul's ultimate flex, Ted Lasso parallels, and his upcoming book on Price. Follow along with all things JC at jamescampion.com, and order a copy of his book while you're at it! What do you think about "Hey Jude" at 81? Too high? Too low? Have I totally lost the plot? Oh, it's so juvenile!”But that's the magic of this syllabic delight,It's a chorus for rebels, for love, for the night. So cheers to Past Tens, for their list and their lore,For honoring 'Na Na Na' — and the bands we adore.May their Thanksgiving pod forever replay,With “Na Na Na” laughter to brighten the day.
This little book is full of deep thoughts and emphasizes a call to sound doctrine. Craig and Troy dig into the book of Jude to find the riches of Jude's writings, the warnings against false teachings and false teachers, and the call to the faith. Jude asks us not to have faith, but to stand firm in the faith. What is the difference? Listen and find out! MUSIC Tuesday was Hair Metal Night on "Dancing with the Stars", so ABC thought it would be a good idea to bring in Gene Simmons as a guest judge for some reason. Gene seemed more concerned with how hot the female dancers were than how well they danced. An excerpt from the audiobook version of Alex Van Halen's memoir, Brothers, has been released. Unlike the first clip, which was 33 seconds of "Unfinished," the last piece of music he recorded with Eddie, this one is titled "Overture" and it's Alex basically eulogizing his little brother. Staci's guest is Chris O'Dell, the author of an incredible memoir called “Miss O'Dell.” Chris worked for Apple Corps and was in the studio when the Beatles recorded The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be, and she sang in the Hey Jude chorus. She lived with George Harrison and Pattie Boyd and she's the subject of Leon Russell's song, Pisces Apple Lady. She's “the woman down the hall” in Joni Mitchell's song Coyote, the “mystery woman” pictured on the Stones album Exile on Main Street, and the Miss O'Dell of George Harrison's song. She's even in Staci's latest book, “Rock & Roll Nightmares: Phantom Chords,” which has a chapter on the haunted goings-on at Friar Park, where she lived when she was working for George Harrison. She has a lot to say about Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, John and Yoko, and her upcoming "Miss O'Dell" documentary.

Show Notes: Despite what Americans may think, moral panics about TV exist everywhere and today, we begin the exploration of a doozy. The start of a two-part look into four episodes of Star Trek that came a cropper at the hands of Auntie Beeb (a not-so affectionate term for the BBC) that of course allows Miles to indulge in one of his favourite talking points about British movie culture - Video Nasties! Because of this, we're only looking at two episodes per part. In ‘Miri,' we see some very familiar style backlots and some very 1960s ways of talking to young women which definately makes our casual explorers think Auntie may have a point! Then, we jump straight to the third season of The Original Trek as our heroes endure ten minutes of plot and forty minutes of bloody nonsence in ‘Plato's Stepchildren,' possibly one of the most famous episodes of Star Trek (unless you're from the Deep South) but is consent more important than controversy? Whatever we decide, the Big List will change forever! Episodes discussed: ‘Miri' (10:39) and ‘Plato's Stepchildren' (38:17) Talking Points: Video Nasties, why were these episodes banned from broadcast until the 90s, Miles' first choice for his Non-Trek thing indicates some wider issues, Alien Romulus, Miles misses Stupid Drunk British Lads smashing stuff with pipes, Astro's Playroom, Miles and Charlie have different views towards achieving Platinum on games, Miri, Miles only wants to talk about lists, not get put on one himself, the always creepy 'she looks 14 but she's actually 300 trope,' Kirk's charm here does not read well in 2024, exact replicas of Earth are a little silly, how many SF societies wipe themselves out looking for immortality (and Miles pulls out a bit of 'meanwhile in the UK, Doctor Who was doing this' coincidence), we briefly touch on the rather triggering experiences of Grace Whitney (Yeoman Rand) shortly after this episode and her leaving the series, the oddly faced Steven Jay Pollard, Droogs in waiting, Shatner clearly trying not to punch a child, did the BBC have a point with Miri? Violence from children, inferred child-death, Hey Jude, the majesty of the theme for ‘The Good, The Bad and the Ugly,' whenever people bring up eugenics, just turn around and run, we've started to incorporate our experiences with Space 1999 into watching Star Trek, nonsense starts and just generally never stops, Charlie gets slap-happy, Mary Whitehouse would not approve which is fine because we don't approve of Mary Whitehouse. The nonsense gets creepy when Spock starts singing and it gets REALLY creepy when Kirk and Uhura is made to smooch, Charlie really wants to make a Dragonball Z joke here, when it's done, Miles is pulling off the band-aid, some real shame on our heroes her, is this our first mention of slash-fics? This episode doesn't go full-Hellraiser, No Gods No Philosopher Kings, sorry Parmon, one day Miles will go on a long tirade on how people misuse the term ‘Lynchian,'how much truth is there in the legend, would you show this to your partner and we can't escape Shatner's disturbingly pointy nipple, Miles has watched some wank in his life and that definately reflects his opinion of the episode, Miles poses Charlie a very important question.
A few weeks ago, an upcoming writer named Chris Gunther reached out to me with an interesting theory. He claimed that song titles were appearing later in songs. Here's an example he gave me. The Rolling Stones' classic “Angie”, released in 1973, starts with Mick Jagger intoning the title. Compare that to Olivia Rodrigo's “Vampire”, a piano ballad from 2023. It takes 132 words before Rodrigo reaches her title. Of course, those are just examples. Gunther claims that's part of a larger trend, though. I'll let him explain. As a reminder, this is the podcast version of the newsletter Can't Get Much Higher. Click here to read the newsletter. A sermon over the letter of Jude. Speaker: Greg W Mathis
Take a sad song and make it better? In this episode, Dad and I explore the oft-overlooked Epistle of Jude, including theories of authorship, its lavish use of apocryphal sources not included in either Christian or Jewish scriptural canons, its incipient trinitarianism, and the ongoing urgency of its charge against antinomianism. Also, is Jude the middle term between Paul and James? Notes: 1. Bauckham, Jude–II Peter 2. Schnelle, The History and Theology of the New Testament Writings 3. Saarinen, The Pastoral Epistles with Philemon and Jude 4. Hengel, Judaism and Hellenism 5. My "little book of parables" that Dad referred to is Pearly Gates (my #1 bestseller!) Holy moly! Marcus, Luke and Jim get their heart rates down long enough to recap a truly absurd game of football, as England scrape past Slovakia more by luck than judgement.
